[Landscape Deck + Green Park + Precinct Marker + Rain garden] design

Kim Keat Towers comprises 3 blocks of high-rise residential development with 3R and 4R units. All blocks are orientated to the North-South facing direction with maximum views from units to the adjacent park and surrounding greenery. Like bamboo shoots that can grow to full height in one season, the new development will spring up new community and living spaces for the precinct and its surounding, INJECTING AREAS OF NEW LIFE into Toa Payoh East Neighbourhood. Inspired by the strong linear character and segmented aesthetics of bamboo, the conventional building mass Is shaken up and recomposed as an interplay of uneven volumes rising up the skyline by alternating stacking of 3R and 4R units.

01

Apart from creating a unique silhouette highly visible from the conflux of CTE and PIE, the movements in massing allow green decks and skyrise terrace to be extended as high volume social spaces at regular interval along the facade, resulting in a highly porous and sustainable development with different levels and vantage points overlooking the park. These skyrise community living rooms spring out like bamboo shoots from the lift lobbies, creating new community spaces to interact and enjoy the outdoors. Warm earthy colours of brown to green will be used extensively to harmonise in a rustic and natural setting with natural materials like stones in gabion walls and composite timber for activity decks used throughout the development and park area.

Kim Keat Towers Is designed to integrate and enhance the livability of the vicinity by creating new community spaces and extending views of greenery and park spaces through generous setback and strategic staggering of the new residential blocks. The existing Blk 256 & 254 continue to enjoy unblocked views of lush landscaping and direct covered link to Golden Clover. The standalone existing block in Golden Clover is fully integrated with the new development via a new linkbridge and covered linkway connecting Blk A to the 2nd storey lift lobby of Golden Clover. To secure instant shade and greenery, the existing 5 mature rain trees are conserved and enhanced as restful spaces for contemplation and tree-top decks, allowing new experience and a predation of Nature.

The roof garden above MSCP is the heart and communal “village centre serving the entire development. It overlooks the main arrival entrance at one end and the Common Green at the other end, spanning the breadth of the site and linking directly to adjacent residential blocks. A myriad of social and recreational amenities are interspersed along the lushly landscaped decks, including playgrounds, fitness stations for adults and elderly and taiji area. Spaces are also reserved in large planters for future communal gardening to be adopted by residents. As the central green spine, the roof garden opens up a valley in the middle of the large site, drawing in wind and natural light to reach all blocks and maximising views of greenery to all units.

As the confluence of greenery and outdoor communal spaces for the vicinity, the Common Green and its surrounds is a traffic-free oasis for various recreation activities and social interaction. A landmark pavilion is designed atop the linkbridge joining MSCP roof and Blk A to serve as a lookout deck over the greenery and to frame the arrival entrance to the Common Green. The MSCP terrace planters are arranged to cascade down from the roof garden and gently flows down to merge with the landscaping on ground. Residents and visitors are drawn through the wide sheltered vista of the lush greenery from the main arrival drop-off to the Common Green. Green corridors also extend out from the Common Green on both sides to link Jalan Kayu and Sengkang West Road, as final touches to complete the urban green tapestry.

[Precinct Marker + Community Plaza + Landscape Deck + Look-out Points] design

Conceptualised as a sea-sculpted marine community, Northshore Coral View is embraced by a unique landscape inspired by coral reefs and panorama of sea view. Rising from the lush greenery are 4 blocks of 2/3/4/5-room units sculpted in the form of a “man-made” coral reef, creating a seamless harmony with the sea, sky and Nature. The translation of organic and modular coral patterns into facade treatment provides a distinct precinct identity and heralds one‘s arrival into Punggol Northshore district. The groundscape is designed as a kaleidoscope of coral reefs abuzz with various communal amenities, greenery and educational glattorms to raise public awareness on oral conservation and appreciation of its vital role in our ecosystem.

03

At the intersections of green corridors, the Coral precinct marker - “La Roc” stands out as the mother of all corals in the landscape. Beside supporting the linkbridge between Blk A & D, it provides a good advantage point to the sea and incorporates environmental quality information that will be transmitted through LED display to suggest to park users on recommended level, duration and type of outdoor activities. Balconies are provided to all units facing the sea and there is no West-facing unit in the development. A basement carpark serves all blocks and offers full pedestrain links under shelter. The central plaza is anchored by a prominent 12m high sculptural marker. visible from the sea. park and to all sides of the adjacent developments to provide good orientation and waytinding. A district level elevated pedestrain network runs through the site and connects to the LRT station and precincts beyond. Emulating the close-knitted symbiotic community of the coral reef.

[Facade + Site Layout] design

Inspired by high-rise view of surrounding lush greenery, Toa Payoh Treetop II revisits the typology of high-rise high density residential development as a collective forest of towering trees pushing towards the sky and sprouting new epiphytes in the form of landscaped sky terrace along its vertical façade - the high-rise Community Living Rooms. 10 towers of 40 storeys and 3 towers of 26 storeys stepped down at the proposed Neighbourhood Park are orientated in the North-South facing direction surrounding a vast open landscaped decks which extend the green corridor from the proposed Park to N4 C29B on the eastern side.

04

The organic layout creates maximum porosity and views to greenery while allowing generous natural light and ventilation throughout the development. The curvilinear forms of the key blocks are designed to continue the undulating flows into the proposed N4 C29B planning to seamlessly blend with the overall park theme of the “Forest Garden”. In the combined site planning, 3 wide green corridors are created to linked Lorong 1 Toa Payoh to the proposed Park, flowing through the existing Toa Payoh Crest in the first vista and next through N4 C29A and N4 C29B via 2 other wide visual corridors. The free-flowing form breaks down the wall-like effect of high density blocks, offering surprising views at every turn of corner, while minimizing any chance of direct overlooking between blocks. The tropical forest theme will be showcased on all the landscaped deck area with dense landscaping in the middle to create a forest cloud of organic filter to sieve out CO2 and urban heat. Communal facilities like fitness stations, taiji / yoga and playgrounds will meander through this dense forest garden. Native trees and shrubs will be planted to create a new outdoor education space with signage to complement the Edible Garden theme of the proposed Park.

[Facade + Site Layout] design

Alike an ever-changing musical piece, Tampines Green Sonata will be a vibrant and colorful precinct designed with Nature at the core of its ensemble. On the East side, units are arranged with maximum views from their balconies and windows to the adjacent parks. Building façade are designed with rhythmical accent fins to mark the arrival to Tampines North from TPE. Vertical fins and horizontal lines are composed harmoniously with colours to heighten the experience of visitors entering the new town and opening up wide vistas of lush greenery in-between all blocks.

06

To ensure barrier-free connection with parks, the overhead bridge links directly to the MSCP roof garden through a distinct precinct marker, framing the start of one’s journey to the Green Living Room and MSCP roof garden along TPE. The waves of greenery meanders and joins at the conflux in front of the Green Living Room, before cascading in a series of terraced gardens above the proposed Childcare Centre (CCC). In tandem with the “Leaf Concept” of Tampines Masterplan, the motif of the leaf structure inspires the form of the CCC typology to bring more porosity by fusing the outdoor area with indoor spaces, creating opportunities for outdoor classroom and learning for appreciation of Nature. In line with the spirit of keeping Nature as “close to its Nature” in Eco-green, the Green Living Room will be designed with grasslands and rain gardens melding with park amenities to retain as much of the outdoor wildness as possible and to keep maintenance to the lowest. Water will be cleansed by vegetated swales and bio-topes instead of being channeled away by concrete drain. Enhancing bio-diversity is the key objective to be shared with preschoolers and park users alike, to raise greater awareness and to provide more nesting opportunities and feeding spots to attract more fauna and flora from the region to grow the biodiversity pool.

The Green Corridor Extension starts on the North side where the MSCP forms a curvilinear buffer against the noise and pollution from TPE. Dense landscaping will be decked out on the roof garden to create a natural barrier of organic filter to sieve out CO2 and urban heat. Most of the block units will not have windows facing TPE to mitigate potential noise impact. Communal facilities like fitness stations, taiji / yoga and playgrounds are sprinklered along the linear roof garden, with large plots of landscaping designated as future adoption for communal gardening by residents. The Green Extension spills over into the Green Living Room in a cascade of garden terrace and links to the next MSCP roof garden and the adjacent park via the overhead bridge, allowing users to enjoy a variety of treetop and park experiences along the seamless journey.

Date : May 2017 Job Scope : [Facade + Sky Terrace + Rooftop Garden + Drop-off porch] design Brandishing hi-tech modernity and sleek efficacy befitting STEE, the new landmark at Jurong East Street 21 is a 15-storey industrial-cumoffice iconic tower with 6 storeys of ramped up carparks, a triple volume sky terrace at 9th storey and a landscaped garden at the roof level. The new extension building is seamlessly integrated with the existing 4 storey building to appear as ONE new tower/podium by weaving an organic screen of vertical fins over the new car parks, vehicle ramps and continuing to the existing building faรงade facing the main road. The tower block rises above this white/yellow tapestry in an aluminium cladding and curtain glass wall envelope, with curved edge portal frame composed at the west-facing main faรงade to deliver elegance in symmetry.

07

With the integration of the existing building and new; extension achieved by enveloping the lower podium with a continuous band of vertical fins, the entire development will be face-lifted with a refreshing outlook and without any physical disruption to the existing building other than repainting works. Though seemingly connected, the new extension building is strategically recessed in the middle to ensure minimum overlapping over the existing building. This will greatly enhance productivity for time and cost saving during construction. Most importantly, it will significantly minimise any potential risk of falling hazards over the existing steel roof sheltering the office areas. At night, the new landmark transforms into the JEWEL of Jurong East, with featured LED lighting glowing from the faรงade portal, ambient lighting showering from the landscaped sky terrace and the distinctive glow from the corporate logo mounted on the rooftop of the existing building, bridging the present with the future.

The project is a local restaurant chain that was established 4 years ago in Kuwait. Within a few years they have opened 4 branches and now a fifth one in the Sheikh Jaber al Ahmad Cultural Center in the heart of Kuwait City. However, because of the upscale location, this branch was required to be unique than its predecessors. The client stressed the preservation of the essence of the previous locations while still showcasing an upscale dining experience. It was a tough challenge to create a fine dining experience while maintaining the grass root essence of the brand.

13

The firm’s approach is inspired by traditional Kuwaiti design principles. We used the idea of the “hosh” (central courtyard) and the “liwan” (shaded walkway) to create a contemporary dining space. The ceiling is the centerpiece of the design. It is a composed of an art installation that spans across the central 60m2 court yard. The piece responds to the regional landscape by abstracting the topography lines of sand dune formations to create a unique ripple effect that diffuses light through the use of linen. The materials were a mixture of elements from the other branches as well as the introduction of new materials. The walls. floor, and some of the seating are composed of concrete while the ceiling is primarily brushed brass sheets. The south wall has hints of wood in the form of five wooden gates, which is another smaller art installation that refers to the history of Kuwait.

The space is primarily composed of concrete, except for two 8 meter high green walls. The organic composition of the walls respond to the cold, structured language of the concrete that create a beautiful paradox.

14

The wood installations nestled in between the green walls are inspired by shelf mushrooms that grow on the barks of trees. They are formed by a series of CNC milled wooden panels that are stacked and offset to create an encroaching effect that melds into the surrounding greenery.

The project is a pre existing high end fitness facility where the client wanted to introduce the concept of “Alice in Wonderland” into the space to relate back to their original branding scheme. Parallel’s job was to create a series of art installations that turns the place into wonderland, where reality is distorted and where the outside world is left behind as one travels down the rabbit hole. The first intervention that Parallel designed are two window displays that capture the attention of people passing by. They were inspired by the 1870’s era when the story of Alice in Wonderland was first conceived. The first piece is a vintage living room chair attached to a high wheel bicycle. It plays upon the cycling classes which the facility provides while responding to the history of the story. In addition, this same idea was used on another piece in the window display where vintage seats are attached to an antique rowing machine which is another piece of equipment that is available.

15

When one walks into the space, they enter a living room. This living room is the facility’s reception and where people are greeted. The idea of the living room refers back to original concept of nonsense and the distortion of reality. There are low shelves held up by upside down tea cups, a tea table shattered into 3 pieces that form the facility’s logo when brought together, and mirrors all around to distort perception. As one leaves the living room and “goes down the rabbit hole” towards the locker rooms, they are greeted by two murals. The murals are a series of distorted grids that were inspired by the surrounding cladding that “suck” members into the void. Finally, the last design intervention is a 4x6.5 meter mural of the king and queen of hearts. The mural was cut into many small strips that were integrated into the existing concrete walls that create a dynamic piece that shifts as one walks through the space.

The design of the space is dictated around two grids that are intersected to create a language that governs the the design of all that elements like the furniture, lighting , stairs, and spacial composition. The grids radiate outward from the pre-existing central column. We saw the column as an opportunity rather than a hindrance because it created limits that we had to work around. The restaurant is composed of a ground floor which contains the kitchen and a small seating area, and a mezzanine that holds additional seating. Design Concept :

The design of this revolved on creating a family space that was cozy and warm while still acting as a luxurious reception room for the clients guests. . As one enters the house, they are greeted by a large art installation made from a series of cnc milled acrylic panels that undulate creating a wave effect that respond to the swimming pool into courtyard. In the reception room, the perimeter was used as a datum that governed the design of the space. The furniture was inspired by the art deco era. The couch is the centerpiece of the room. It is constructed from black velvet with an offset brass skirt that wraps itself into a u-shape around the space. The lighting is created from two interlocking U-shapes that hang low from the ceiling creating a feeling of smaller space within a larger space.

17

The bench responds to the perimeter of the room where it is an extension of a tall table that wraps itself around the corner to the window, then drops down to create seating area at the window. Finally, in the family living room, we created a “ripple wall made from a series of cnc milled wooden panels. It is inspired by light that reflects off the water from pool in the courtyard and onto the wall creating a series of shadowy ripples.

FEATURE WALL DESIGN The staircase wall was inspired by the ripples of the pool in the central court yard. When the sun hits the water at a specific time of day, it reflects the water onto the interior wall of the living room and the resulting effect is mesmerizing. Using numerous shelving panels, the wall creates the impression of water that relates to the ripples reflected on to the wall.

The installation presented here is the outcome of the Visiting School Kuwait 2016, organised by staff and graduates from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. The Visiting School brought together international and local students and professionals in architecture, and investigated contemporary methodologies for context-specific architectural design. The programme introduced digital design seminars and advanced site mapping methodologies to allow participants to engage with the underlying social and cultural mechanisms of public space. The site information gathered was then used to explore and develop a critically informed architectural intervention, enhacing and enriching the site within the Promenade Mall.

18

Throughout the ten day programme, several different design strategies were combined into a single architectural approach which was further refined to incorporate the characteristics of digital fabrication. The pavilion is constructed using 3-axis CNC routed plywood components that were assembled on site without the need for specialist tools or fixings. The resulting pavilion incorporates spaces for social activity of different size and character. It operates at the scale of human experience, acting as a catalyst for the specific users of the site. As an innnovative architectural installation, it explores the possibilities of generative design, and its capacity to incorporate dynamic social and environmental performance qualities.

PERSPECTIVE MONTAGE

The overall assembly of the pavilion out of a sequence of column-like elements offers the unique opportunity to create spatial perimeter enclosures that are not solid but porous, mediating views and light at specific lines of sight. The qualities of space that result cover a range of social interactivity scenarios including private space for a single occupant, and larger group spaces for dynamic social interaction and play.

The concept behind the pavilion was inspired by the snail, specifically its inability to hear. The snail interprets sound as vibrations, and reacts by staying inside its protective shell. Similarly, the pavilion attempts to interpret sound through a series of physical protrusions. The radial form mimics the shell of the snail or a shelter. Sound volume and intensity are shown by the degree of protrusion, which in turn combines with the rest to form an image or pattern. This was done by setting a central origin (like the shell of the snail), and using a script to divide contours accordingly. The script also took into account the image and its “intensity” via black and white images. White portions of the image extruded outwards, and black portions inwards. The image, number of contours, and height and size of the protrusions can be altered parametrically, through the script.

19

For the purpose of the pavilion, this was used to portray a message. The chosen images represent a person attempting to communicate but not heard. The person is then frustrated, and finally screams. The degree and drama of the protrusions respond to the intensity of each image. Ultimately, it is the “sight of sound that cannot be heard”.

• 1 st Pitch The story is simply a beautiful Parisian women strolling around in the street of Paris on a spring day, observing and enjoying the experience of the street of Paris. I would like to enhance the motion element through the scarfs in the background (they will move on a track that will give the panning effect, as if they form the urban context) in addition to the bike in the front. The speed of the scarfs and the bike move in the same speed slow and ideal, yet against each other to maintain the logic and reality. Expressing the flâneur attitude by walking around aimlessly but enjoying the surrounding.

• 2 nd Pitch After a research made about Paris in the 19th century, the École des Beaux Arts controlled all aspects of the art world, centered in Paris at the time. As the only accepted art academy and the only means of public exhibition. A revolution is made to elevate a new artistic movement known as the Impressionist. Their decision to turn away from the Academy made public acceptance of their art a huge challenge. They needed an alternate support system, something to replace the Academy studios as a means for artistic instruction and discussion. They found this at the café. Parisian cafés became the new hub of literary life. The flâneur is a passionate observer, a painter of circumstance and all that it has to say about the eternal. Keeping this sentence in mind inspired me to curtain extend.
