train with spORTy’s aTp-cTp Summary of ATP-CTP requirement As of August 1, 2014, all pilots seeking an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with multiengine privileges are required to complete an FAA-approved ATP Certification Training Program (ATP – CTP) prior to taking the ATP knowledge test. The ATP-CTP training must include classroom training of at least 30 hours and simulator training of at least 10 hours. At least six hours of simulator training must be completed in a full flight simulator, level C or higher. Course fee: $4,595—includes 30 hours classroom instruction, 10 hours simulator training, and all required materials and supplies. The fee does not include travel and lodging.

ADS-B 101

What is it and how does it work? WHAT IS ADS-B? Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), part of the FAA’s transformation of the Air Traffic Control system, is a nationwide network of ground stations that receives position reports from airplanes and relays them to controllers’ screens. Maybe more importantly, these ground stations also transmit subscription-free datalink weather and traffic to pilots in flight.

WHAT IS THE COVERAGE AREA? Unlike XM Weather, ADS-B is ground-based, so you need to be in range of a station to get updated weather. Fortunately, the FAA has completed an extensive network of ADS-B stations, and coverage is excellent across the US. Here is the FAA’s map of coverage area at 5,000 ft. In many areas, ADS-B is available just a few hundred feet above the ground.

Keeping track of weather is one of the most important things any pilot can do to fly safely, and the ADS-B network delivers NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, TFRs, Pilot Reports and much more. Just turn on your ADS-B receiver, connect it to your iPad and you’ll see 5-10 minute old weather along your route of flight. Best of all, there are no monthly subscriptions for weather. It's simple and easy.

The most important thing to understand is that ADS-B traffic is not like ADS-B weather. The weather product is broadcast to anyone with a receiver – like an AM radio station. ADS-B traffic, on the other hand, is very different. The ADS-B ground station sends a customized traffic picture only to aircraft with ADS-B Out transponders installed. 5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ADS-B OUT: 1 ADS-B Out avionics will be required by January 1, 2020 in most airspace where a transponder is today. 2 A WAAS GPS must be included in your ADS-B Out solution. 3 ADS-B Out compliance must be with panel-installed equipment (no portables).

FINDING THE RIGHT

HEADSET Buying an aviation headset is a surprisingly personal decision. There is no “right answer” for every pilot – it depends on the type of flying you do, what airplane you fly most often and your personal preferences. Here are a few things to consider as you compare models.

QUIET There are two ways to cancel noise: passive noise reduction (PNR) and active noise reduction (ANR). Almost every headset has at least some PNR, which is created by the headset’s ear seals physically blocking noise from reaching your ears. ANR, maybe the best thing that ever happened to headsets, goes further. In addition to passively reducing noise, ANR headsets use electronics to sense the noise in the cockpit and then cancel it by emitting a sound wave with the same amplitude but inverted phase. Some call it magic, but rest assured, it’s a really neat science that makes it happen.

HOW DOES ANR WORK?

BLUETOOTH FEATURES Modern headsets can wirelessly connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth, which allows you to make phone calls from the cockpit while enjoying the noise canceling benefits of your headset. This is great for calling Flight Service on the ground. Passengers also love this feature for listening to music in flight. Some headsets even offer built-in audio controls right on the headset.

COMFORT While many pilots focus on how quiet a headset is, comfort may be even more important. After all, it doesn’t matter how good the noise cancellation is if it’s too uncomfortable to wear. In general, the lighter a headset is, the more comfortable it will be. Other factors are also important, like the quality of the ear seals and headband.

CABLE VARIATIONS Most headsets come in a variety of cable variations – that is, what the plugs look like that connect to the airplane. The most common connector is the twin plug, often called PJ plugs. These are found in fixed wing aircraft, primarily general aviation airplanes, but many airliners are using it too.
