SLADMORE 19th & 20th CENTURY SCULPTURE Prince Paul Troubetzkoy (Russian, 1866 - 1938) 8758

Artist: Ref:

Moscow Coachman, 1898 Description: A good quality, rare early twentieth century bronze model of a Moscow Coachman entitled 'Moscow Izvostchik' by Paul Troubetzkoy (Russian, 1866 - 1938). This bronze was cast by the lost wax process circa 1930, probably in Italy. It was signed in the wax ‘Paolo Troubetzkoy’ and has a dark brown patina with lighter brown highlights and black undertones. Dimensions: Height Length

Collections: Verbania Pallaza, Museo del Paesaggio, plaster Model Illustrated: Verbania page 133 Footnote: Troubetzkoy modelled this work whist in Moscow in 1898. It depicts a typical Russian horse-drawn sledge with driver and whilst slightly smaller in scale is similar in subject to his famous early work of 1894 'Milanese Fiacre in the Snow' (exhibited Sladmore Gallery 2008, catalogue number 2). With both models Troubetzkoy has tried to portray the impression of the snow swept scene rather than a more simple, realistic portrayal. Few casts of this work are known, one dated 1898, another 1926. The first probably cast in Russia, the second on his return to Italy around 1925. Neither of these casts bear a foundry mark like the present. However, from the quality of the casting and the patina this cast was in our opinion produced in Italy circa 1930.
