Contributo rS Agus Astapa This 41 years old man is a senior journalist loaded with reporting experience in various media. Such as Bali Post Media Group, Warta Bali, ANTV, Dewata TV, and some other media. Today, he serves as Vice Chairman of Bali Province Information Commission. In Soul of Sanur, this Banyuatis, Buleleng, origin serves as editor as well as reporter, reporting interesting events in Sanur. His experiences in editing field for so many years lead him to a position in the main team or consultant in some printed media in Bali.

Reva Nadia Media scene was not new to this mother of two. At the first encounter, she worked as announcer at a radio station in Bali, CDBS FM. Two years later, in 2005, this Denpasar, April 28th 1984 born woman expanded her field to television broadcasting. She became a news caster at TVRI Bali. After completing her college study, Reva moved to Jakarta and worked at a national newspaper as a language editor. Once a while, she also writes articles. She said that working in media is pleasant, challenging, and broadening her insight at once.

Slamet Melda This Malang, East Java, originated graphic designer is quite experienced in graphic designing for media. This 25 years old man has put his touch in some printed media. Besides doing graphic design, this father of a child also fond of photography. Hence, he also became photographer for Soul of Sanur. He is capable of working under pressure. When deadline approach, he is able to work tirelessly.

Gus Wikanda Originated from Banjar Buruan, Sanur, this man is one of Sanur Village Festival initiators. The event itself now became the icon of Sanur. This 32 years old man was once a hotel worker. During his free time, Gus Wikanda also doing photography. Up to now, his interest in photography is harnessed by becoming photographer for Soul of Sanur. He is also become a liaison between SOS and several figures in Sanur community.

anur is Bali's oldest upmarket resort area and is an established beach-side town. However, despite its abundance of restaurants and accommodation, it remains quiet, relaxed and peaceful. Sanur has a wealth of cultural, natural and historical attractions which is balanced perfectly with the quintessential shopping and beach-related sights so there is something for everyone. The Annual International Kite Festival is celebrated every July and features traditional Balinese giant kites up to 10 m long which are made and flown competitively by teams from different villages. If you're travelling outside of the festival don't despair, aside from the organised event, the kites can be seen practising year round. A popular attraction for all you art and history buffs is the Le Mayeur Museum. Former home of noted Belgium impressionist Adrian Jean Le Mayeur, the museum is now dedicated to his life works. If traditional Balinese culture interests you than it's hard to go past Pura Blanjong (Blanjong Temple), one of the most notable temples in Sanur. Its significance is steeped in the historical inscription set into one of the stone pillars, known as Prasati Blanjong. The inscription tells of a Javanese king who visited Bali in the 10th century and ordained what is considered to be Bali's first formal government. As Bali's oldest known artefact, the temple's grand scale and importance make it a must see for all visitors to the island.

As well as shopping and eating, there are plenty of photo opportunities along Sanur's paved beachfront cycle path. Stretching approximately five kilometres from Jalan Mertasari in the south to the main beach at Jalan Hangtuan in the north, the path is fantastic for a scenic bike ride, particularly in the morning. Another favourite is the local night markets which are a sensory delight and offer plenty of food options. The weather in Sanur is mild and pleasant with daytime temperatures falling between 20C and 33C (68F to 93F) year round. December to March brings the west monsoon and along with it heavy showers and high humidity. However the days are still sunny and the rains, starting in the late afternoon or evening, pass quickly. June to September sees the humidity drop and the evenings can get quite cool. The main street of Sanur is packed with car, motorbike and bicycle rental outlets to help you get around the island. Metered taxis also patrol the streets looking for passengers so it's never hard to get from A to B. Local bemos (buses) run up and down Jalan Danau Tamblingan and Jalan Danau Poso but these are erratic. Sanur is a great place to walk as distances are not large and the streets are relatively quiet. Harmonizing Cultural and Service Village

That also goes to Made Sudana, Chief of Sanur Kaja Village, in Region of Denpasar Selatan, who was inaugurated on November 11th 2013. Never he had imagine ca be elected chief of the village in Sanur Kaja. It is because culturaly, the position always held by caste of brahmana (the highest level of caste system in Bali). However, his effort brought him to this position, having given people trust to next six years. This Sanur born on May 13th 1963 has been known among the society of Sanur for quite a long time. Before elected chief of the village, Sudana has been actively involved in BUMDes (business unit owned by the village). He is the one who in charge in managing retribution of Matahari Terbit Beach. He is also the secretary of Sanur Development Foundation (SDF), whose responsibility is to manage Sindhu Market. "At that time, I was also the chief of Sindhu Market revitalition board. And, as we can see, Sindhu Market became a representative traditional market after diresmikan on 2010," he said. As the village chief, Sudana, who is husband of Ni Kompyang Rai Aryani, decided to make internal restoration, especially in service aspect in Sanur Kaja community. "We have to establish first, making adjustments between the unit manage by village and the various stakeholder in Sanur Kaja," said Sudana describing his strategy in conducting the village of Sanur Kaja. He promised that the internal consolidation will take place not more than a year.

In becoming a new leader, he determined to harmonize between cultural village (desa adat) and service village (desa dinas). There were often obligations and rights mismatch between cultural village, which deals with religious and cultural function, and service village, which deals with administrative function. As a result, the policy became overlapped. Sudana see that the problem solution lays in the prosperity of the Sanur Kaja people. For example, he said, the management of various village assets in Matahari Terbit Beach, which now run by cultural village. However, there are profit sharing with service village, hence expenses of service village also can be paid by cultural village. He also pointed the expenses regarding village competition which can not be charged to service village. In Sudana's opinion, making Sanur Kaja as the barometer of tourist destination in Sanur area or Denpasar in general can not be measured from the local society welfare. "As a matter of fact, there are so many economic unit run by people outside Sanur. For example Matahari Terbit Beach, which managed by people from outside Sanur," he said. It was not only from the side of assets management, Sudana said, Sanur is also marginalize in terms of its human resources. There are so many of Sanur Kaja people who can not get a job in a hotel in Sanur area, although they can be considered as the owner of the area. "In the future, we will continue to promote the commitment of hiring 40% of local people in hotels or other tourist accomodations. So that local community can be accomodate," he said. Having 8 banjars, the 1,2 kilometers Sanur Kaja surely has human resources potential. Howver, based on the fact, the people of Sanur Kaja work in not very strategic level. Hence, many of the choose to be entrepreneur, making small benefits from tourism. In the future, this father of three hope that Sanur Kaja will continue to develop. Moreover, Denpasar Government has set a target to build a pier at one side of Matahari Terbit for transportation from Sanur to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. The pier is expected to bring more income for the village. Further more, the pier, which will be built on 2014, will beautify Sanur Beach area so that tourist will not be distracted by docking boats.

n spite of being the oldest tourism area in Bali, Sanur still developing up to nowadays. And for all this times, Sanur has been the heart of Denpasar tourism. Unfortunately, not many people understand what Sanur's icon is. A trademark that make tourist keep flowing to the area. According to Chief of Sanur District Ida Bagus Alit Suryantara, this icon of Sanur issue is something that need to be thought by Sanur community as well as their society figure. He gives example Bangli with Kintamani and Batur Lake as its icon. So does Kuta, which famous for its iconic sunset scene. "Well, what is the icon of Sanur? Wether its beaches or its nature? If the beaches would be the icon, what makes it so special," said Alit Suryantara. In the future, he hopes Denpasar City Government involving Sanur's figure create a trademark for Sanur. If there is no action made, gradually tourists will go to other destination. He then put Buleleng as an example, which is famous for dolphins at the Lovina Beach. That attraction will always be magnet in Northern Bali. This father of three also hopes that Sanur's endorsement as national strategic tourism area will open the path for the development. Including development of natural potency, culture, as well as human resource. This is essential because by becoming national strategic tourism area, the development of all potency will be possible. The District of Sanur which consists of three villages, namely Sanur Kaja Village, Sanur Kauh Village, and Intaran Village, is indeed base its tourism development by culture and tradition. By that, all cultural and traditional potential became the pillar of tourism in the area. It goes alongside with tourists' interest in visiting Sanur, enjoying its culture and nature. "Few years ago, there was an idea of making Drona statue in the middle of the sea as a symbol for Sanur tourism area. But, nowadays, I do not even know the continuation of the project," said Alit, who has been chief of this district since 2008. Besides figuring the icon of Sanur, there are some problems that need attention and solution. He said sanitary, health, and environmental problem still becoming the main issue. And not be neglected, the issue of poverty in Sanur. "I am not ashamed to admit that there are poverty in Sanur. Now, there are 38 families listed as poor family. They actually not originated from Sanur," he said.

FigureinSanur About the poor, this bachelor of literature admits that this issue has been existed for so long time. However, there are some people in the society do not want to admit the situation. They think it would be an embarrassment to have poverty in Sanur, which notoriously known as major tourist destination. "But, during my time as chief of the disctrict, all issues must be brought up so that we all aware of what going on. As a result, we then try to find solution, including in eradicating poverty," he said. In spite of poverty issue, the strengthen of culture in order to develop tourism in Sanur is undebateable. It means, whatever the situation, culture and tradition in Sanur have to be preserved. It is need to be done considering the fact that Sanur is known as spiritual village with so many pinandita (holly priest of Hindu). One program he designed is to build a Balinese style gate on each village border. Considering there are three villages in District of Sanur, it will be much better if there is a gate on each border. "For example, the border between Sanur and Kesiman at By Pass Ngurah Rai Street need to be formed by a Balinese style gate. So that people will easily noted the borderline," he said. He also said that there is only one gate that adopt Balinese style, which is the gate at Hang Tuah Street. Having a various community in its society, Sanur has so many potential indeed. Unfortunately, he stated that not all potential are developed. One of them is human resource potential. "The policy in Sanur stated that investor opening business in the area must use local worker as many as 40% of their total worker. But, the condition now is not that ideal," he said. Therefore, he promised will held a consultation meeting between the stakeholders in Sanur so that in the future the empowerment of Sanur people and its potential can be maximalize.

anur is the first region in Bali to develop as tourism area. It was marked by the construction of the most phenomenal land mark in that area, the Grand Bali Beach Hotel, in 1963. Since then, Sanur keep developing as tourism area. Moreover, Sanur appears to have certain charms that draw wellestablished or family tourists. Most of them are looking for a tranquil place, far from noisy and crowded situation as seen in Kuta. "Our seniors had indeed design Sanur to be a convenient tourism area for everyone. And that is what we maintain up to now," said The Chairman of Sanur Development Fund (SDF) Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra during a meeting with Soul of Sanur, recently. According to Gusde--the nickname of Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta Putra--tranquility is the one that made Sanur superior to other tourism area in Bali. As an area which now listed as national strategic tourism area (NSTA), Sanur surely have to be able to preserve its identity as a cozy area for everyone, especially tourists. By considering the number of tourists visiting Sanur, this Santrian Group owner said that 60% of Sanur visitors are European and Australian. Among them, there are visitors age 35 years old or more, which considered to be economically well-established visitors. It is off course brings good impact to Sanur economic. Gusde prefer long stay visitors than visitors in large number but stay in short time. As to in Sanur, the length of stay of the tourists is quite fair, a week in average. "There are even tourists who stays for months. It happen during winter season in Europe. Rather than living rough days during winter, they--especially mature tourists--choose to stay in Sanur," said Gusde who was born in May 21st 1970. Not only retaining tourists visit, Sanur actually tries to maintain its image by developing infrastructure continously. The effort is strengthened by a policy delivered by Denpasar Mayor which regulates tourism development zoning in Sanur area. As an example, building near the shore should be resort-typed accommodation in order to keep nature in balance in accordance to go green concept. In the other hand, flat-typed buildings are advised along the main road of By Pass Ngurah Rai. The regulation is not only to create a convenience area for tourists, but also to avoid chaotic situation caused by the traffic. "So, everything are regulated in certain manner. We do not imagine Sanur similar to other area, like Kuta for instance, which number oriented," said Gusde. V I N 1 | January - February 2014

The concept is suitable to Sanur history. The name of Sanur, which consists of two syllables, 'se' and 'nur' (means ray or divine light), gives spiritual vibration to the area. This vibration is intended to be preserved. Moreover, since the old days, Sanur has been believed to be the home for Ida Pedanda (holly priest of Hindu). Thus, tourism which now blooming in Sanur is expected not to constrains that spiritual aspect. That spiritual vibration is hoped to be the spirit of tourism in Sanur. "So there is balance between tourism and religious spirit as well as culture. As a result, Balinese culture is well-preserved although the tourism develop rapidly in Sanur area," said Gusde who was master graduated from Maryville University of Saint Louis, USA. The synergic effort of Sanur community and Denpasar City government in keeping the spirit has going so well. That is why Sanur needs to keep developing other supporting area in Denpasar City so they can develop in line. He put Cultural Village of Kertalangu in Kesiman as an examples. So that the city tour package which developed by the Denpasar City Government. Other tourist destination is should be develop in order to support Sanur or as an alternative destination. Although Sanur is the main supporter of tourism in Denpasar City, Gusde realize the need of government appreciation for Sanur community. Gusde confidently said that 85% of Denpasar revenue is harvested from tourism sector in Sanur. Thus, a balance must be obtain by giving back the contribution of Sanur tourism sector in form of proper infrastructure construction. For example, street construction, sidewalk, and the rehabilitation of other public facilities. By that, there is balance between the contribution of Sanur tourism in form of hotel and restaurant tax and appreciation received by the Sanur community in terms of improving community welfare.

As he monitors and controls development in Sanur, Gusde admits that there are some people who only consider short term impact in developing Sanur. That is why SDF, which already exist since 1964, must be able to bridge community interest and changes of era, especially in tourism. "For example, if there is investor persuade the community to build a hotel though it is not match the land regulation, but insist to build it for sake of money. This is where problems start to roll," said Gusde. In order to overcome the situation, SDF as the protector of Sanur development will continuously working with Denoasar City Government, especially in growing people regulation awareness as well as their awareness in developing Sanur to the right direction. "After a comprehensive explanation, they are now aware that developing Sanur is not just for this time, but the most importan is for the next generations," he said.

Cultivating Organic Farm in Sanur

anur has always been main tourist destination in Denpasar. Hence, the development of various tourist facility are blooming in the area. Amid the land decreasing caused by the expanding of accommodation facility, organic farming, which can be run in each household, can be a promising choice. That also goes for community in Sanur, in the Region of Denpasar Selatan. There, organic farming is first introduced by Wayan Parka, Head of Social and Environment Bureau of Yayasan Pembangunan Sanur (YPS). When Soul of Sanur met him at YPS office, Made Parka said that organic farmer can be an alternative for urban society in making some green spaces. It is not only brings benefit for the city park, but also useful for families in fulfilling their need of veggies. "I am developing an organic farming in 22.5 are at Hang Tuah Street. It is a loan for fellow Sanur people. We hope it will be developed up to 40 are," says Parka, who is born 45 years ago. On the organic farm he initiated, he planted bananas and papayas. Along with that, he breed 72 cows, which feces is used as fertilizer or biogas. For Parka, self-development and the welfare of Sanur community lay in the innovation process of the society itself. He resemble the innovation process to his life journey. On 2002, after the Bali bombing, he was forced to be jobless. The incident affected hotel

During his free time, Parka came to Cemara garbage depot, which run by Made Sumarta. There, his creativity and passion in nature, especially on garbage, ignited. "I learned how to utilize garbage in order to turn it into economical goods, instead of lifethreatening waste," said Parka. Working in nature field is familiar to Parka. It is because he graduated from Farming Faculty of Udayana University back in 1987. Since then, his passion in utilizing garbage started. Parka, husband of Ni Ketut Suriati, then decided to work with nature and organic plant up to now. Parka then started to involved actively in social event in his neighbor. He was asked to join as PKK (social organization in women empowerments) staff at Sanur Village. When he joined PKK, he felt unique because he was the only male staff. He often appointed as representative in PKK meeting if Chief of PKK of Sanur Village was absent. On 2010, Parka was called by Cahirman of YPS Ida Bagus Sidharta to be staff in YPS Social and Environment Bureau. Parka social and business activities start to roll as he joined YPS. It was because YPS runs social as well as business unit, such as PT Bhakti Sanur. He appointed as personnel manager on that company. Other business unit run by YPS are laundry services and restaurant at Sanur Bay.

Environment friendly During his work with nature, this father of two said that many things can he take. Such as, knowledge of how to manage Sanur as tourist area which cannot be apart from garbage management system. He said that in Sanur, there are two types of garbage. One is garbage produced by the activity of Sanur community it self. The other is garbage that was brought from the outside Sanur area, either dump by worker from other area or carried away in sewerage. "I often saw worker from outside Sanur, but work in Sanur, intentionally brought their garbage in plastic bag and dump it in Sanur area. Well, off course that was not garbage produced by Sanur community," said Parka. However, Parka realized that creating Sanur as garbagefree tourist area cannot be obtain without the participation of the community member. Not only the Sanur community, but also the role of government. In this case, the government has to build a city park. "Community only can contribute in making small garden in their houses, as for city park, it goes to government's hand. In this case, Denpasar Government have to make policy for that," he said. Up to this day, he appreciate Denpasar Government great attention to Sanur. It was shown by the Sanur Village Festival and Sanur Bersih event. Those activities had been proclaimed by the government and it is hoped that Sanur community as well as those who work in Sanur will follow it up. "This is our effort in making eco-friendly community, and it is our duty to deliver Sanur Bersih successfully," he said. SOS V I N 1 | January - February 2014

As a proof, when there were not so many school in Bali, Sanur had already has a private junior high school named Widya Sastra Taruna Junior High School or commonly known as Wisata Junior High School. The Chief of Education Bureau of Sanur Development Foundation (SDF) I Nyoman Muditha stated the fact, recently. This father of three son said that Wisata Junior High School was founded by former Chief of Sanur, Ida Bagus Beratha, using construction workers' shelter at the Bali Beach Hotel. It was on 1967, as the construction of Bali Beach Hotel was finished, the school founder asked for used shelter to be function as school buliding. "Thus, at that time, Wisata Junior High School also known as shelter school, because it was indeed they used ex shelter for its building," said Mudhita, recalling his past time when he was in the first batch graduated from the school.

As the time goes by, Wisata Junior High School grew as one favorite private school in Sanur. In 2013, Wisata Junior High School even became national champion in environment field, so they were rewarded Adi Wiyata Mandiri Award. The award was given to school which implement environmental based education, so that the students were taught how to love their environment. For example,

taking care of school garden, trash management, as well as doing recycle. In spite of all those SMP Wisata High School's achievements, Munditha were now covered in concern. As a member of Sanur community, this former Kelian Adat (cultural chief in a village) of Banjar Batan Poh, Sanur, said that he was not able to put maximum effort to make Wisata Junior High School as junior high school which belongs to Sanur community. It is because the right over the school's land is only right of land using. It means, the school's 1 hectare land is still belongs to the Bali Beach Hotel. the school itself is considered as a dweller. Therefore, Muditha along with SDF board and all members of Sanur community hope that in the future, the school's land can be owned by the school. "Since the school did not own the land, the school is not eligible to receive education grant from the government. Because the status of land owning will be questioned. That is the main problem now. Hopefully, we can find solution for this in near future," said Muditha. Nowadays, as tourism grows rapidly in Sanur, South Denpasar, ready to work with good quality human resources is needed. That is where a vocational school comes as a solution in supplying ready to work human resources. And Sanur community highly expect to have their own private vocational school in the area. Muditha stated, though there is already public vocational school--named SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar--which focusing on culinary and tourism, the Sanur community really hope to have their own private vocational school. "Therefore, SDF is proposing to build a private vocational school in Sanur, but now we are constrained in terms of land and funding," said Muditha during an interview in his office at SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar. As headmaster of SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar, Muditha said that in past V I N 1 | January - February 2014

EDUCATION the Sanur community tried to establish a private high school which they named SMA Wisata. The school was located at SMP Wisata building in present time. The idea of establishing a private high school came from the Chief of Sanur at that time, Ida Bagus Beratha. Unfortunately, when they were ready to run a class, on 1986, a public high school was established located on the land which now occupied by SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar building. "At that time, Sanur community were very happy to welcome a new public school in their area. At first, all students of SMA Wisata were directed to attend high school at SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar," said Muditha. The enthusiasm of having new public high school is shown by students number which now reached thousand students. However, Muditha admitted that there are few Sanur people got to SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar. They seemed to reluctant to attend high school there. Yet, they prefer to attend high school outside Sanur area. They put SMA Negeri 6 Sanur as their second choice, which they attend if they are not accepted at the school outside Sanur. "I don't understand how that happen," he said. In spite of that fact, Muditha will always has flaming obsession to elevate human resources quality in Sanur. That is why he continuously working with SDF to fulfill his obsession. His first step is to fight to establish private vocational school in Sanur area. After that, he dreamed to build higher level of education, sort of course which equal to diploma grade. In present, there is one diploma-equal course which used SMP Wisata building in Sanur area. But, the course is owned by individual, not owned by SDF. He hope one day, SDF will have the same course for elevating the prosperity of Sanur community. Thus, in the future, Muditha and SDF board will fight to establish private vocational school and diploma institution in order to create skilled human resources in tourism. "These kind of courses are very important because it can create ready to work human resources. This resource is highly needed in job market in Sanur, especially in tourism industry," said Muditha who was born 31st December 1961.

ne tourism icon in Sanur is Le Mayeur Museum, which is located at Sanur Beach seaside. This museum was founded by a famous Belgium painter, Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres. The museum was a historical proof of tourism existence in Sanur. Thanks to Le Mayeur, Sanur became a major tourist destination. A history book published by Bali Province Department of Culture stated that Le Mayeur is a Belgium noble born in 9th of Februaru 1880. He was the youngest child of Adrien Le Mayeur de Mepres and Louisa de Bosch. His parents' split made young Le Mayeur decided to pursuit his passion in painting autodidact. Le Mayeur inherit painting talents from his father, who was also a painter. Armed by talent, Le Mayeur then took painting lesson from a famous painter at that era, Ernest Blanc Garin (1813-1916). Garin's lesson took Le Mayeur to his goal, became a well known painter in the world.

Le Mayeur then started an adventur throughout the world. He visited Algiers, France, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Tahiti, and end up in Bali. The adventure took place from 1921 up to 1929. Le Mayeur visited Bali for the first time on 1932, via Singaraja. However, he chose other path which brought him to Denpasar, where he settled in a rent house near Pura Prajurit, Banjar Kelandis. There he met a beautiful dancer, Ni Nyoman Pollok. Being stunned by her beauty, Le Mayeur made Ni Pollok as his paintings model. He then married her in 1935. Their marriage last for the rest of his life. No wonder if in every Le Mayeur's painting, Ni Pollok was always be the model. Today, there are 88 Le Mayeur works stored in this museum. Initially, this museum is manage by this couple. On May 31st 1958, Le Mayeur died in Belgium caused by his illness. His wife, Ni Pollok, faithfully stand by his husband side trough his last minutes. V I N 1 | January - February 2014

Ni Pollok has no children as requested by her husband, who did not want to see her figure changed after giving birth. However, after Ni Pollok died in 1985, Museum Le Mayeur was organized by the Government of Bali Province, especially Bali Province Department of Culture, up to nowadays. According to Chief of Technical Management Unit of Le Mayeur Museum, Gde Mahadi SP, the museum is ongoing restoration constantly. Not only the restoration of the building, but also regarding its painting collection. The restoration of a very old painting, even the one that color blurred, was done in 2008-2009, with the help of

Directorate of Art of Department of Culture of Indonesian Republic. "Some of the restored paintings are back on display, but for the very old ones, we kept the stored. Although, we have repro paintings put on glass displays," said Mahadi. Hence, the display of repro paintings often upset the visitors. It is because they expect to see the original paintings of Le Mayeur. "Those paintings are very old, they tend to be fragile. And it is our duty to keep them preserved," said Mahadi who was originated from Les, Buleleng. The main problem faced by the museum is visitors convenience during their visit at the museum. The low position of the room and sultry environment make visitors inconvenience. Besides that, the absence of air conditioner make the room fuggy. The problem became worse if there is electricity shutdown. The room became dark and hot, making it impossible to enjoy the collection. "We have tried to submit for air conditioning, but the room structure is not supported. So, we canceled it. Hopefully, next year, we can install a portable air conditioning for an alternative," said Mahadi. However, the number of visitors of this museum is not so high. Most of the visitors are students during their fieldtrip. As for foreign tourist, the number is also low. Mostly, foreign visitor came from Europe and they are painting lover. In 2011, the number foreign visitors is 6.038 persons, and number of local tourists is 3.635 persons. In 2012, foreign visitors reached 5.693 persons, and 3.233 local visitors. Museum fare is differentiated for adult and children. For foreigner the fare is 10.000 rupiahs for adult and 5.000 rupiahs for children. In other hand, local visitors must pay 5.000 rupiahs for adult, 2.000 rupiahs for children, 1.000 rupiahs for students, and 2.000 rupiahs for college students. awar (a Balinese dish created with mixture of vegetables, coconut, meat, spices and herbs) is a typical food which served in every religious ceremony,either chicken lawar or pork lawar. For most of Balinese, lamb lawar is not common. That is why many Balinese are curious to taste it. One place where lamb lawar is served is at warung (food stall) owned by I Made Cetik at Gunung Sari Street, Sanur Kauh.

Made Cetik, 61, has been running lamb lawar stall for five years. His story of starting the stall is unique. At that time, there were a number of bikers came to his place. It was just casual visit, but he wanted to please his guests. So, Cetik, husband of Ni Nyoman Rumpil, tried to serve lamb lawar, though he was used to make chicken or pork lawar. The effort succeded. His lamb lawar which was using base genep (Balinese complete mixture of spices and herbs) like in common Balinese lawar was liked by his guests. Not only delicious, the taste of the dish fit to most Balinese taste. "That was the start. I was then adviced to sell lamb lawar on a food stall," said Made Cetik. Packed with courage, this father of two the opened his food stall at his place now, at Sanur Kauh. Time after time, visitor started to come. Up to now, some important figures have tried his lamb lawar. Even Denpasar Mayor Rai Wijaya Mantra has already taste the dish. Because it is so delicious, Made Cetik's lamb lawar takes part in Denpasar Festival held by Denpasar Government every year. In five years of participation, Made Cetik won cooking competition almost every year. "I am happy because people gave very good response for my lamb lawar," he said.

To make lamb lawar, Made Cetik combine spice that is usually used in Balinese dish with spices that typically used in Javanese dish. Yet, the taste of base genep is dominating. That characteristic made his lamb lawar distinct to other lawar. In one day, Made Cetik cook one lamb which was supplied by a member of Sanur community. In case of short stock, Made Cetik can always get lamb from goat seller at Wanasari, Kampong Java, Denpasar, especially for the skin. He cooks the lamb by himself in order to get rid of its smell. To tender it, the lamb is cooked for 3,5 hours. That is why Made Cetik and his family open their stall around ten o'clock. In a day, he made 3 billions rupiahs up to 6 billions rupiahs by selling his lamb lawar for 40 thousand rupiahs per portion. "Local people like it. Foreigner also love it. But special for foreigner, I made it less spicy because they are not so fond of heat," said Cetik, who is also a bale gede (a place for religious ceremony) builder. Besides serving lamb lawar on his stall, Cetik also cater for religious ceremony or buffet. Not only his famous lamb lawar, but also other Balinese dishes, such as pork lawar, chicken lawar, serapah, ares, or roasted lamb.

Standardization Keeping Away the Negatives

or some people, tattoo is considered to be not nice, moreover it is considered as the symbol of thugs. Therefore, tattoo is labeled negative. In order to break the stereotype, a number of tattoo artists gathered in a community. Their aim is to promote tattoo as an artwork. Sanur Tattoo Community, which founded on September 15th 2013, also pursuit the same aim. Twelve tattoo artists in Sanur work hand in hand build this community. According to Head of Sanur Tattoo Cummunity, Wayan 'Apel' Hendrawan, by this community, he and his fellow tattoo artists would like to build strong boundary in facing the invasion of tattoo artist from outside Sanur. As an example, he pointed the tattoo scene in Kuta, which trapped in an unhealthy competition among tattoo studio owner. They even involve in a fight over costumer. Surely, it bring disadvantage to tattoo artists' image. "The worst case, there is a tattoo artist who is not yet competent in making tattoo, but boldly open a studio," said Apel Hendrawan. It off course very dangerous. Moreover if there is complain from costumer regarding their work. He still remembers an Australians claimed infected HIV/AIDS after making tattoo in Kuta. The widely spread news in Australian media affected tattoo artists in Bali in negative way. As well as for tattoo artists in Sanur area. Therefore, Apel Hendrawan founded this community. In the future, not only perform preventive action, this community is hoped to be a sharing forum, especially on studio hygiene. "Unhygienic tattooing practice by one studio, brings negative effect to the other. This is what we try to prevent," said Apel who is also Bigrock Tattoo owner. This tattoo community is hoped to set a standard among studios in Sanur. Those standard include what to prepare in running tattoo business as well as standard in costumer treatment. Moreover, standardization also have to be set in the matter of sanitation. In this case, the tools used for tattooing must be hygienic. Apel Hendrawan said that his studio is willing to share knowledge in hygiene, for example about needle usage. "In my studio, each costumer use one needle. After the work is done, I dispose the needle. If in the future, the same costumer came back in, I use totally new needle," said Apel Hendrawan. V I N 1 | January - February 2014

community Having positive aims make Sanur Tattoo Community receive a good response. Not only from major figure in Sanur which gathered in Sanur Development Foundation (SDF), but also from Denpasar Government. They give the community proper room for creativity. Their support also actualized by inviting the tattoo community in every social agenda, for example in Sanur Bersih movement, up to joining in tattoo contest in every anniversary event. "It can be said that tattoo not only a lifestyle, moreover it has became an enjoyable wonderful artwork," he said. Nowadays, Apel Hendrawan said, many moms decided to put tattoo on their skin. But, in the past, tattoo was only for thugs. Today, this Japan native art has been enthused as an artwork. "Now, even PKK (women organization of empowerment) members want to put tattoo on their skin. They usually want to remember historical event in their life. For example they tattooed their children name to celebrate the birth of their children," said Hendrawan. As far as his experience in tattoo scene and opening a studio at 134 Tamblingan Street, Sanur, Hendrawan said that the number of costumer was varied. In a day, ther can be one costumer or more. So does the amount of time in making tattoo. It depends on the design

the costumer wished. Artists' main job is preparing tattoo concept, but if costumer has a certain concept, artists are ready to put it on costumer's skin. Tattoo artists not only make a new tattoo, but also able to repair old tattoo. "Well, it is like old tattoo reparation. We recreate the old tattoo in to the new one, as their request," he said.

8th Sanur Village Festival Words by Ferina ; Photography by Courtesy of Sanur Village Festival Held annually as a celebration of the sanurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arts and culture, the 8th annual sanur village festival had been done from September 24-28. The festival featured 5 days of daily art performances, related cultural and commercial activities, presenting awide variety of dances, music and other artistic expressions. This years also marked the new theme â&#x20AC;&#x153;segara giriâ&#x20AC;?. Segara being the sea and giri being the ocean, which means tracing the trails of life. It depicts the sanur and bali community commitment to preserve nature and social cultural elements, reflected through its values, education, creativity and recreation.

Environmental activity

As a world tourism destination, Bali in general and sanur specifically must prioritize environmental sustainability to maintain the balance and harmony of by minimizing environmental damage due to development. Some events scheduled were cleaning the beach and mangrove forest, replanting coral for reef rehabilitation, replanting soursop as a rare vegetation for reforestation efforts, turtle release and interactive dialogue with environmental experts. All these events were held alongside the daily event.

Kite Festival

Gigantic kites took flight near sanur beach welcoming kites in all shapes and colors, joined by a traditional gamelan orchestra provide music and entertainment. The festival was the pre event on August 1. These kites were valued based on the ease of launching, design, how high it flies, stability in the air and the most importantly, the landing. As with every facet of Balinese life, kite flying is steped in religious symbolism. It was originally used as a way to pass on messages to the GODS, and traditional kites which take the form of fish (Bebean) and birds (Janggan) depict hindu deities.

Jukung Competition

Jukung is a colourful traditional fishing boats that line the coastal shores of Sanur. These graceful vessels use only one main cloth sail and in favourable winds can skim them oceanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surface at a fairly rapid pace. These boats are used to venture out into the coastal waters in the evening and return with their catch before sunrise to sell at local seafood markets. One of the most fascinating activity during the festival is the colorful jukung race. Last year more than 50 jukungs from local sanur jukung groups joined the competition.

Sanur Auto Festival

Held on 15th September this year, last year more than 15 classic automotive clubs joined the festival under the banner of Sanur Auto Classic (SAC) III. SAC was founded by several collectors and classic automotive lovers in sanur and has become a regular activity in the Festival. Activities done for this year was car parade, automotive gathering, classic cars and motor contest, modification contest, rolling thunder and live performance and various others. Event Food Festival

The ever popular SVF food festival is a free outdoor festival that features local food vendors, lively chef and DIY demos, diverse music and performances. Some participants of the festival from Sanur are Kopi Bali House, Jazz Bar n Grill, Warung Gosha, Ryoshi, The Gangsa, Stiff Chilli, Area Pub & Restaurant, Flapjaks, Massimo Restaurant, Hatten Wine and Santrian Groups as weel as restaurants from other areas such as Queensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tandoor, Sushi Tei, Noodle in A Box, and many more.

Fun Run

The latest attraction during the SVF is the daily 10K fun run held on September 22. Anyone can join for a run or a walk through the village. This fun run was designed with unique traits, because the route goes through sanur village, combining sanur heritageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sports

and tourism elements. This fun run combines fresh air, scenic views and fun enjoying complete village cultural activities, where you discovered another side of sanur.

KOI Exhibition

Introducting a new programme in SVF this year, that caters to KOI fans and lovers in various competitive activities. The exhibition held in conjunction with the festival also offers purchase of selected KOI fishes, contributing to local economy of decorative fish, gathering them from various regions of Bali to one spot for collective gathering.

Sanur Creative Expo

The Sanur Creative Expo 2013 connected Sanur’s creative community with resources they need to thrive, through various local and national vendors. The expo showcased the potential of Indonesia and Bali to local community, domestic and international visitors, which in the long run m aim to expand Bali’s export and investment market. With over 50 stands to see and a wide range of Crafts on display, this expo was bringing a creative shopping experience.

Jazz Festival

For the love of Jazz, The Sanur Village Festival 2013 presented a series of Jazz performances. Everyday from the 24th to 28th, famous Indonesian musicians took the main stage and entertain all sanur village festival visitors. The event opened by a Garapan Segara Giri, followed by a Legong Intaran Taman performance. Then Ayu Laksmi took the stage. On the 25th, Dewa Bujana had something special in store with his collaboration by the quintet. For early performance there were the underground jazz movement and Balawan who showed a different side to his musicality had hypnoticed the audience. ot only known as a notorious tourism area with the iconic sunrise, Sanur also known as a warehouse of wild surfers. Hence, many accomplished athletes was born from Sanur. Up to now, the surfers of Sanur who joined in a group called Wild Surfing still exist. In conjunction to Wild Surfing anniversary, a surfing competition for junior surfers is held. According to one of the judges, Kadek Sudiatha, this year event is the 11th time and is held for two days on 1st-3rd of December 2013. There are two categories competed in the event, junior (for under 18 years surfer) and open. Professional surfers are welcomed to compete in open category. Surfing competition is an annual event held by Wild Surfing community. The goal is to develop surfers' potential as well as to search new and young talents who are hoped to be big names in the future. Kadek Sudhiarta mentioned names of surfer from Pantai Sanur and already made their name on the international scene. They are Komang Sanjaya, Wayan Budayasa, and Ketut Juliartha who are made to became surfing master for two times. Budayasa and Juliarta championed International Surfing Club. "They have brought the name of Sanur in to international scene. Moreover, in ASEAN Beach Games few years ago in Bali, surfer from Sanur contributed a number of gold medal, which made Indonesia a champion," said this 47 years old man. That is why, Sanur with its potential beaches, said Kadek Sudiartha, should be utilized in searching new talents in surfing. Surfing competition in conjunction to Wild Surfing anniversary is one way to achieve that goal. In surfing, the judgment is made based on surfers' skills and also their gut in taking risks to face the wave. "The higher the risk taken, the higher the score. So, it is all come to their skill and experience in facing the wave," said Sudiartha, who is also a holder of national surfing jury license. V I N 1 | January - February 2014

Why beach boys? "In general, the beach boys are very familiar to beach situation. For them, surfing is their daily routine," said the husband of Japanese woman, Orgawa Kaoru. Sudiartha admitted that majority of the surfer are member of Sanur community, especially the beach boys or fishermen. Their daily life on the shore, such as fishing and transporting tourists to Lembongan Island or Nusa Penida Island made them familiar to the wave, sculpting their skill in handling the wave. Although harnessing the Sanur beaches potential properly, they do not realize that their daily routine is their key to achieve greater accomplishments. Sudiartha really hopes that the potency of Sanur beach boys will not fade away for lacking of government attention. Therefore, he expects that the government will pay attention to this society. However, they might be the future heroes for their home or nation. "They usually practice using their own funds. In the future, I hope government will notice them and put more attentions to them," he said.

Cooperative in Indonesia is treated as the pillar of community economic. It is hoped that by means of cooperative oragnization, one community can improve their welfare. That goal is the reason behind the existence of Mitra Abadi Sanur Cooperative, which reached its fourth year on November 18th 2013. According to Mitra Abadi Sanur Cooperative Supervisor, Made Losin, the purpose of establishing the organization is to gather members' potential, as well as to help them in terms of saving and loan. Apparently, the various program made by this cooperative drew people attention so that now this cooperative has 406 members. Losin said that this cooperative manage saving and loan, and also common commerce. "We are very thankful to every party, especially the Sanur community, and Sanur figures in Sanur Development Foundation (SDF). Their participation and support have made this cooperative blooming," said Losin. As an appreciation for member and stakeholders support, Mitra Abadi Sanur Cooperative held an anniversary celebration at SDF Field in Sanur area. The event was attended by Cultural Chief of Intaran Sanur, Head of Denpasar Cooperative Office, Chairman of SDF, Head of Sanur Loan Institution (LPD), also representative of Bank Rakyat Indonesia and BNI. The event was peaked with door prize handover and ended with music and dance.
