Never one to miss an opportunity! Peter Quinn extracts lotto cash from FAI Chief Executive John Delaney at the official launch of Shamrock Rovers’ new astroturf centre in Enniscorthy. Pic: Liz Wildes.
The various summer festivals may be over in Enniscorthy but there’s still plenty of good news to report particularly the official opening of two great new facilities in the town. The Presentation Walled Garden was opened by Cllr Keith Doyle, Chairman Enniscorthy Town Council, on 17th September. This wonderful garden, described by Cllr Doyle as a “hidden gem”, complements the adjoining, impressive multi-use arts centre – The Presentation Centre. The garden is, we understand, the fifth park

area to open in Enniscorthy within the last three years. Let’s hope that all these park areas are treated with respect so they can provide countless hours of pleasure for the many citizens who use them. The second major official opening was Shamrock Rovers’ fantastic astroturf centre with the honours being performed by Football Association of Ireland Chief Executive John Delaney on 28th September in the presence of many local dignitaries including club sponsors – Smiles Dental.

Welcome to the October issue of the Slaney News. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page for up-to-date news and check out the Slaney News website www.slaneynews.com. We’ve introduced a new Motoring page in this issue which will be a feature of all issues from now on. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------In addition to the great new facilities reported on our cover page other positive news includes: The official announcement of a major international conference coming to Enniscorthy next year (the Council of International Investigators); a new committee formed at the Strawberry Festival AGM so it’s full steam ahead for next year; for the benefit of businesses in the town the flow of traffic will be reversed at the side of the old Murphy Floods Hotel to facilitate drivers entering the town centre; Eamonn Doyle held a very successful showcase gig on Arthur’s Day which hopefully will see Diageo (Guinness) coming on board as major sponsors of next year’s Riverside Jump Festival. We also catch up on all recent events in the town and preview October’s events including Wallis Bird’s eagerly anticipated gig in the Castle Venue on 19th October. – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy Tidy Town – major p r o g r e s s The Enniscorthy Tidy Town Committee expressed satisfaction and felt a sense of achievement that its plan of action over the summer months bore fruit in the dramatic increase of nine marks under the heading ‘Litter Control’ as shown in this year ’s Report of the Tidy Town Adjudicator. An overall increase of seven marks was the highest increase we have recorded in recent years. The work of the members of the Tidy Town Committee, and the Volunteers in planning the Litter Picking Programme this year, which commenced on Easter Sunday and is still ongoing, definitely paid off. The Adjudicator commented in his Report: “There appears to have been a great improvement since last year.” There is much more to be done. In spite of our best efforts there is as much littering and illegal dumping going on, there is no easing off of such bad behaviour. Until we change the mind-set of the individuals involved we won’t really succeed in having a perfectly clean and tidy Enniscorthy.
Our highest marks were achieved under the headings of: ‘Overall Development Approach’, ‘The Built Environment’ and ‘Landscaping’, each attained 84%. ‘Waste Minimisation’ realised the lowest marks at 45%. The possibility of acquiring the biggest increase in marks over coming years is under the headings of ‘Litter Control’ and ‘Tidiness’. They are the two areas over which we have most control and with proper application and co-operation we can again dramatically increase our rating in the Tidy Town Competition and be up there with the best of them. My observati ons as a weekly litter picker lead me to believe more use of a brush and shovel would be a big help. We came across spoil and debris that had been lying around for a number of years in places and no litter picking tool could deal with it. I would suggest come next April and May there should be a planned campaign of selecting areas for a complete clean-up – at least one a week. After the concentrated effort on an area it should be easy to maintain its normal
info@wexfordvikingglass.com
cleanliness and tidiness with the customary litter pick-up. We came across ragwort, grass and weeds growing at the base of walls within the town and on approach roads. Another common sight was cigarette ends on our footpaths, particularly close to some pubs. I have separated the Adjudicator’s Report into three sections – positives, negatives/criticisms and recommendations/comments. It is surprising to find the same issues coming in for criticism each year. It is a document worth studying by anyone with an interest in our attractive town. It can be downloaded from www.tidytowns.ie – just follow the link to adjudication reports. I believe the representatives of the business community should agree to have a copy of the Adjudicator’s Report circulated to every business in the town. The Tidy Town Committee in conjunction with Enniscorthy Town Council should decide what organisations and individuals should be circulated with a copy or with the sections that I have educed from the Report.
Some of the Adjudicator’s Criticisms/Recommendations/ Comments: Do a survey of redundant poles in the town. Encourage shop owners to reduce window clutter. Tr y a p r o g r a m m e o n ‘Environment education of the grown up smoker’. This year ’s Adjudicator will confine himself to encouraging you to stimulate waste elimination projects in the household. Unoccupied and derelict buildings are unfortunate. Be mindful of the quality of street shopfront signs. Some are too tacky for this ‘Baile Stairiúil’. The bridge area is a challenge for pedestrians. Wispy road verge grass creates the wrong impression. Your engagement with the Transition Year students of Coláiste Bríde is the most exciting project you have undertaken in the past year. I could list many more but space doesn’t allow this time. I wanted to deal with the Tidy Town projects for future years but I’m afraid it will have to wait for a future article. At present

we are three marks short of a Bronze Medal, which is our immediate aim. We have a programme to follow for the next five years which will call for the co-operation of all – Tidy Town Committee, Enniscorthy Town Council, Wexford County Council, FÁS workers, Chamber of Commerce, Business Association, Residents’ Associations, and all who are interested in a clean and tidy Enniscorthy. On behalf of the Tidy Town Committee I must acknowledge the contribution of the To w n C l e r k , P a d r a i g O ’ Gorman, the Town Engineer, M a r k C o l l i n s , t h e To w n Gardener, Fran Breen, and the outdoor staff to the overall improvement in the town’s appearance. The efforts of the Tidy Town Committee FÁS workers must be highly commended.

DO YOU NEED A FAST SD CARD? 2 October 2012
www.slaneynews.com
I get asked this question a lot, so this month I’m going to cover SD cards, their different sizes, their different speeds and which one is right for you. OK, first up, SD comes in 3 sizes, the 2 most common are the standard SD and microSD. The standard SD is used mostly in cameras while microSD you’ll find in phones, tablets and I’ve even seen it in some cameras too. The final type of SD card is miniSD, it isn’t that common anymore but I wanted to mention it just in case you come across it. You may have noticed too that some SD cards are labelled SDHC or SDXC; this is because back in 1999 when SD cards were first devised their maximum capacity was 2GB. In 2005, SDHC was introduced and was capable of capacities up to 32GB; finally in 2009 we got SDXC, which has capacities up to 2TB. In case you wondering what the HC and XC stand for its ‘highcapacity’ and ‘extended-capacity’. Finally there are 4 standard ratings for speed, Class 2, 4, 6 and 10; which are 2MB/sec, 4MB/sec, 6MB/sec and 10MB/sec respectively. This class system is great because it makes it really easy to distinguish between the fast and slow cards. High-end cards, however, have no standard ratings system, with each manufacturer using
To celebrate one year of contributing his technology column to the Slaney News, Sam Power of Get IT Fixed, Enniscorthy, has kindly offered an amazing prize for a great Slaney News readers’ competition.

Simply answer this question: How fast is a standard Class 10 SD card? (hint: if you need a little help you may find the answer somewhere on this page!) Two easy ways to enter our competition: Simply log onto and ‘Like’ the Get IT Fixed Facebook page “www.facebook.com/getitfixed and post your answer there together with your contact telephone number, or else just text the answer and your name to the Slaney News on 087-2403310. Closing date for receipt of entries is 19th Oct. 2012. One entry per person only. Good luck!
Slaneynews Hotline 087-2403310
their own labelling scheme for their own cards. Some may quote the speed in MB (e.g. 12MB/sec or 46MB/sec), while others use something like 100x or 200x to denote the speed (66x would be equivalent to a class 10, while 200x would imply 30MB/sec). It’s also important to note that these ratings don’t have a standard meaning in the way Class ratings do; and may only refer to a theoretical speed rather than the actual speed the card can perform. So which card is right for you? If you’re recording HD video, there is no video technology today that requires anything above a Class 6; however a Class 10 would allow
you to transfer the recorded video to a computer a little faster. Apps on a phone or tablet can load faster with a higher rated card, but most of the time the difference is too small to notice. Finally if you’re a photographer who shoots stills or portraits then any standard card will probably do, if you regularly take wildlife shots, sporting events or anything that moves fast it may be worth considering investing in a high-end card. As ever if you have queries about this article or you’d like me to talk about a tech issue that interests or concerns you, then pop me an email to sam@getitfixed.ie, or you can phone the shop on 053 9238544

Enniscorthians gather Local groups and organisations such as Rapparees/ Starlights, Celtic Roots, Bunclody GAA, FDYS, Street Rhythms, Rathnure Panto, Blackstairs Blues, Fr. Murphy C e n t r e , We l l s H o u s e , Athenaeum, CWCW to mention but a few, came together on Monday evening 10th September at the Riverside Park Hotel for a brainstorming session with a view to formulating an Enniscorthy Programme of Events for the 2013 Gathering. Fionnan Nestor of Failte Ireland kicked off proceedings by explaining to everyone the concept of The Gathering Ireland 2013. “This nationwide initiative is an opportunity for the people of Ireland to reach out to the Irish diaspora - to friends, family, lovedones as well as our connections through business, clubs and associations - and invite them home in 2013 to be part of specially organised gatherings and events held in their honour. It’s an opportunity he went on to say “to showcase the things we are most proud of to the people we care about overseas by inviting them home to experience them with us. This innovative project was conceived at Farmleigh in 2009 and promises to be a massive, year-long, countrywide party that just might be
the catalyst needed for economic recovery. There are over 70 million people of Irish extraction around the world‌ Let’s hope they don’t all come home at the same time or we’ll sink!
The concept is amazing however the bottom line is that there is no funding available for The Gathering, so the powers that be are asking each person, each community, each area to organise an event aimed at bringing people home. Amanda Byrne of Wexford County Council is the woman at the helm with the mammoth task of co-ordinating events and Cllr John Hegarty of Killanerin and Wexford football fame is heading up the Steering Committee to assess and assist the many ideas and suggestions from around the county. And many were already circulating on Monday evening including a Literary Week, Come Home for Patron Week, Walking Festivals, clubs inviting teams from abroad home to play matches and invitation to the descendants of the 1916
Enniscorthy Volunteers to come back to the town in 2013 for the Easter Commemorations coupled with a cultural weekend. Henry Healy, Barack Obama’s cousin, who traced the Irish connection to the US President, is now working with Ireland Reaching Out – an organisation which assists communities to track down descendants of those who emigrated from the area through the generations and issue them with an invitation to come over and research and explore their roots. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Healy after the meeting and this affable, innovative young man very kindly offered his help and expertise and that of Ireland Reaching Out should we decide to pursue the 1916 Volunteer idea for 2013, saying that he believed it was indeed “very doable. Our own Jacqui Hynes wrapped up proceedings thanking all for coming and saying that it was a most uplifting and enthusiastic meeting with lots of novel and interesting ideas floated leading her to believe that we would not be found wanting in 2013 and indeed would be to the fore in ensuring that The Gathering would be yet another success story for Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan

Put Your Pants On Son, Yer Nicked!
More often than not, I abhor remakes. In the grand tradition of modern remakes, the essence of the original, whether it is film or television is stripped away. And the charm, wit and sometimes point are totally missed. For example, when the powers that be decided: “Friday The 13th was a good little film.” “It was, it really was. Could have made more money though.” “You’re right, god damn it you’re right, what was missing?” “An obvious plot, hotter teenagers and the ending wasn’t explained for the idiots that will flock to the cinema to see it. Take that horror fans!!!!!” And so, they ruined one of my favourite horror films. But the madness didn’t stop there. Rob Zombie went on to remake Halloween, and in the process made two films that were worse than the original Parts 4 and 5. And he gave Michael Myers a back story. Apparently it wasn’t enough that he knifed his sister and her boyfriend aged 6 because that simply won’t do a modern day horror fan. Cue clichés, broken home, abusive father. Yadda, yadda, humanising him in the process. To be fair, he did make a film worse than the original Parts 4 and 5, I’ll give him that. The big projecting mofo. Now, how does television fare in the area of the remake. Starsky and Hutch was immensely enjoyable, the two leads were great and the charm and ridiculousness of the original was kept very much intact. Same couldn’t be said for The A-Team. A couple of nice nods to the original weren’t enough to save the film from turning into an all familiar big budget loud action popcorn movie. With the iconic theme tacked onto random scenes. And so we come to The Sweeney. For anyone familiar with 70’s British cop shows, or if you have ITV4, The Sweeney is code name for The Flying Squad of London’s Metropolitan Police Force. Basically, while the other cops are discussing tactics and plans, The Sweeney are already kicking down the doors and using baseball bats and other hard things to subdue criminals. All the while kicking a few teeth in and basically getting the job done. They are led by the masochistic, sexist ‘ard man,

Jack Regan (played here by Ray Winstone, a role he was born to play) and his right hand man George Carter (played by Plan B, aka Ben Drew). The original show was based on the actual Flying Squad of the late 70’s, whose Chief was actually done for corruption and bribery. The Sweeney were famous for not doing things “the right way” and human rights were only found in the form of “you’re a
results. He is also Regan’s goto guy and describes to him how the intended thieves would go about committing a particular robbery in a private bank. The plot is pretty simple. Regan is disgraced and fooled by a criminal, he loses his badge and has to go rogue. He gets arrested in the interim and George has to make a decision. The set pieces in this film are truly great, the standout one being the chase at the end and

criminal, that ends your rights now, the only thing you’re entitled to is my fist.” Ah, those crazy, halcyon days when criminals were treated with the contempt they deserve. Anyway, the remake is directed by Nick Love and to be brutally honest I adored the film. Winstone is just a walking machine as Regan, he ignores orders, uses excessive force all the time and is also cavorting with the wife of the officer whose looking to end The Squad for good. Good man, Jack. Play to your strengths. Winstone brings his burly east end charm to the role and is clearly having a ball. I have never heard the C word so beautifully utilised and the term “you slag” is thrown around with merry abandon. Personally, not enough people are using that word I feel. And much like Christian Bale as Batman, when Winstone throws a punch, you believe it. That anger and violence is real. Plan B as Carter is a bit more watered down than Dennis Waterman’s version. Here he is depicted as a tough kid that grew up on the wrong side but came over to the right side. Granted, he’s happy to wield a baseball bat to get
the botched robbery that results in numerous deaths, one of which is integral to a plot development. And it lasts for a good seven to eight minutes. The camera work and editing make you feel like you’re in the middle of all the noise. The script is littered with profanities and expletives but it all feels eerily natural and I laughed out loud at least ten times. The action is well handled and you get the sense that criminals really are nothing but scum. As I said before, there ain’t no one campaigning for fairer treatment here, it’s all baseball bats and broken skulls. To quote Dirty Harry, “If I see a naked man chasing a woman with a butcher knife and a hard on, I shoot the b******. That’s my policy.” I feel Jack Regan would do the exact same, except he’d probably say, “Oi, time’s up you slag.” Indeed, Jack, indeed. I salute you and The Sweeney. 3/5 Movie News It’s just one piece of news really, but I felt I had to share it. The Shining is getting a sequel. Yes, you read that right, I vomited in my mouth a little bit too. Death to studio executives…. the slags…..
Opera news
Jack Power and Stephanie Kinsella, both from Co. Wexford, attend their first costume fitting with award-winning designer Jamie Vartan in preparation for their professional singing debut in ‘A Village Romeo and Juliet’ by Frederick Delius, part of the 61st Wexford Festival Opera which opens on 24th October.
TWO YOUNG LOCAL SINGERS TO MAKE THEIR PROFESSIONAL
DEBUT IN 61st WEXFORD FESTIVAL OPERA
Each year the internationally renowned Wexford Festival Opera brings together top talent from across the globe, but sometimes the top talent exists in our own backyard. 13-year-old Stephanie Kinsella, from Palace, Enniscorthy, and Jack Power, also 13, from Adamstown, were recently cast in singing roles in A Village Romeo and Juliet, by Frederick Delius, one of the main stage operas premiering in Wexford this month. Both children, who attend secondary school in New Ross, already have some experience performing, but Wexford will mark their professional debut in a rarely performed opera that is already attracting much international attention. Given the rich musical talent that exists in the county, Artistic Director, David Agler, decided to begin the casting search in Wexford before looking farther afield. The children participated in open auditions that required both rigorous singing and acting skills. Commenting on the casting,
Artistic Director David Agler said, “The roles in this opera are very demanding for such a young age, but having heard many young singers in local choirs, I felt that we should at least begin our search here. What we discovered is that we could have cast the roles three times over, such was the quality of the talent.” Rehearsals for the 61st Wexford Festival Opera kickedoff in earnest last month for the 12-day international festival of opera with artists representing 14 countries, including the 2 newest cast members. A Village Romeo and Juliet marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of British composer Frederick Delius with what is considered to be his finest opera. This exciting, large-scale, grand opera is sung in English and in the first scene, the main characters appear in their childhood. The opera is a passionate tale of forbidden love with music that depicts the defencelessness and innocence of youth. The opera includes the celebrated
orchestral interlude The Walk to the Paradise Garden. The 2012 Wexford Festival Opera will run for 12 days from Wednesday, 24 October until Sunday, 4 November. This year’s programme will include 3 mainstage opera prod u c t i o n s L’ A r l e s i a n a b y Francesco Cilèa, Le Roi malgré lui (The King in Spite of Himself) by Emmanuel Chabrier, and A Village Romeo and Juliet by Frederick Delius and two daytime ShortWork operas (A Dinner Engagement by Lennox Berkeley and The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart). The very popular programme of daytime and evening events continue. There will be 54 daytime/evening events presented during this year’s Festival. Full programme and schedule: www.wexfordopera.com. Tickets can be purchased online 24/7 via the Festival’s recently re-designed website: www.wexfordopera.com, by phone +353 (0)53 912 2144, or in person from Wexford Opera House box-office.

DONAL CULLEN GOT A FEW OPINIONS:
Anton Treacy: “I think it’s good for the town, good for business and above all good for tourism… it gives everyone a bit of a buzz.”
Ibar Carty: “The quality of bands is great this year, the lads had a ball and the crowds enjoyed themselves. I can’t pick out any particular act, they were all good and thanks to them all for turning up!”
Eamonn Doyle: “There was a great spirit about the Blues Fest this year… people want to let their hair down and relax and the Blues is just ideal for that, everybody came out.” Eamonn Lillis: “The crowds are well balanced, the music is good, it’s great for the town, long may it last.” The audience… Donal: “Are you having a good time?” Audience: One big “Ya”!
The Lion Still Roars
Jamie Murphy had the pleasure of interviewing Aslan at their gig last month in Enniscorthy’s Castle Venue.
1986 in Ireland. Phil Lynott, one of the single greatest artists we ever gave the world dies of pneumonia. 36,000 people emigrate, Jack Charlton arrives in Ireland to manage our national team building up national hope and pride and two giant pandas, Ming Ming and Ping Ping arrive in Dublin Zoo. There is also a stirring of a different kind in inner city Dublin. Aslan release their demo single, This Is. It garners national airplay and pretty soon it becomes 2fm’s longest running playlisted single. The band went on to tour the UK and by the end of the year they became Hot Press’s most promising new band and are signed to EMI. Two
years later, they record their debut album, Feel No Shame, which rocketed straight to number one in the Irish charts, occupying the top spot for weeks. However, the band fell apart before the recording of their second album and singer Christy Dignam left the band. They tried to recruit a new singer, but as drummer Alan stated: “It was like U2 trying to go on without Bono.” The band subsequently split up in 1988. They reformed in 1993, landed a record deal with BMG and released a single that would catapult them to super stardom, Crazy World. They went on to record four more albums, the most recent of which being Nudie Books and Frenchies (I know right, I
actually know the name and have listened to the album, look at me being prepared, heaven forbid). This new album is quite good and evokes memories of inner city Dublin, which is quite a feat, seeing as I was two when the band formed and I lived in Enniscorthy. The band recently played to a packed house in the Castle Venue, Enniscorthy – a venue with great potential. Lovely spot. The boys, well Christy and guitarist Billy, gave a funny, honest interview before the show. They talked about life, love and basically getting by. Christy summed it up best: “It’s like this, as long as you can pay your rent, your leccy, your food bill and have 20 John Player Blue, you really have everything you need.” The support act, The Mike Scala Band, played a tight thirty-minute set to an appreciative local crowd. And there was even some genuine interaction. These guys are on the web (www.mikescala.com) and are doing some more gigs in Ireland. Check them out. Led by Mike Scala, they delivered a funky, soulful set of original songs. Quite enjoyable.

The Man from Woodstock by Donal Cullen Enniscorthy hosted its annual Blues shindig last month and for those of you who weren’t there to witness this pleasant event you missed out, but the good news is that next year you can catch it again. This year we had a cross section of artists from various parts of Ireland, UK and USA. I met with one guy who got my attention, Mr. Ben Prevo, from upstate New York, a real fine upstanding gent armed with his passion for Blues and Rock. I asked him some questions: Donal: Welcome Mr Prevo to Enniscorthy, what do you think of us? Ben: You’re nice people, I’ve played here before a few times. Donal: You’re living in Dublin, what’s the difference between Dublin audiences and down here? Ben: I get some good people in Dublin because I play a lot there, hopefully the crowds will turn out down here because I don’t play here very often but if they listen to the stuff – they’re good and will have a good time. Donal: You are from New York, tell me what brought you to Ireland?
Ben Prevo
Ben: I met some people in London, formed a friendship, moved to Dublin, joined a band, also met a woman and settled down playing music and I’m still here. Donal: Is Blues your only thing? Ben: No really, I play other stuff too. Donal: What is Blues?
Blues is the juice, the rest is the fruit. Donal: Who are you influenced by? Ben: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, John Mayall, all those greats, some I met too. Donal: Tell me about your friendship with Levon Helm and Rick Danko? Ben: Well I lived in the same town as they did. I played with Levon a few times, he was really nice. Levon was a home boy, kind of quiet, whereas Rick was outgoing and liked to be out there. They’re both dead now, a big loss to us all. Donal: Who else do you like? Ben: Eric Clapton, Lizzy, and I also like Rory Gallagher – he was a good guy, he never f****** sold out on the Blues, he remained true to the end. Donal: Ben Prevo is described as one of the best guitar players of his generation and has a connection with bands like Weather Report, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Eric Clapton, BB King, John Lee Hooker, the list goes on. I can surely say I was in fine company with Mr Ben Prevo and ten years from now Ben Prevo will still be belting it out to anyone who likes good music.
Winner of our Aslan tickets competition last month was: Sheelagh O’Brien, from the Moyne, Enniscorthy.
Aslan made a triumphant entrance and delivered a passionate, albeit short set which mixed new and old material. The new material held up pretty strongly but the biggest reactions were reserved for the hits most of all Crazy World. Overall, it was a very pleasant evening and you got two great bands for €15. Ya couldn’t bate that with a stick. w w w. m i k e s c a l a . c o m . www.aslan.ie. www.facebook.com/pages/CastleNightclub-Enniscorthy/172558 166124770. I had the pleasure of seeing Wallis in Wexford Arts Centre the last time she was over. And she made more noise than an army… And that was acoustic. This time she has a full band!!! Strawberry Fest 2013!
Plans are already underway for Strawberry Fest 2013, with the election of a new committee at the recent Annual General Meeting, which took place at the Riverside Park Hotel. This year’s festival had a great line-up of acts and events, but was affected by the weather, yet this hasn't stopped the determination of the committee to drive forward and focus on next year’s event. Those elected were: President: Donal Minnock. Chairman: Cyril Wheelock. Vice-Chair: Thomas Byrne. Secretary: Nadia Donohoe. Asst Secretary: Anne Gilpin. Treasurer: Seán Doyle. Asst Treasurer: Colin Levingstone. P.R.O.: James Quirke & Denise Brophy. With 2013 being the year of The Gathering, and celebrations and homecomings taking place all around the country, it's imperative that one of the longest running festivals in Ireland, The Strawberry Fest, plays its part in putting county Wexford on the map of destinations to visit.

It's Panto time once again in Rathnure as the Panto Society are in preparations to bring all the madness and craic to the stage. Producers John Reilly and Liam Sharkey are putting the finishing touches to their 12th original script called Sulky-Ella and the Highland Adventure. The story kicks off some years after the original Cinderella story. Queen Cinderella and King Charming now have two children, one nice, and one not so nice. Sulkyella lives up to her name, and in order to try and help her to be a proper princess, the King and Queen decide that she should be the next heir to the throne over her older sister. Being the kind girl that she is, Rosella agrees with this. However, when Queen Helena of Capatonia

Face of Ireland finalist Leanne models for Athenaeum
The Athenaeum Restoration Committee are delighted to have local girl, Leanne Hore, finalist in this year’s Face of Ireland competition, modelling at our upcoming fundraiser ‘A Taste of Fashion’ at the Riverside Park Hotel on Wednesday 10th October at 8pm. A stunningly, natural beauty – Leanne has done us all proud making it all the way to the final of The Face of Ireland later this month in the Red Cow, Morans Hotel, Dublin. In this its 6th year, The Face of Ireland attracted over 32,000 applications from lovely lasses the length and breadth of Ireland encompassing all 32 counties and all sharing the same dreams and passion – to work in the industry and represent their country. Our very own Leanne is one of the final group of 27 out of that 32,000 who made it all the way to the Grand Final and well done to Leanne – our heartiest congratulations on this wonderful achievement which will come as no surprise to anyone who knows her. Leanne, as they say, is not just your proverbial pretty face… She is a quietly confident, all round, talented individual who is well known and extremely well liked in her own community. She is a beauty both inside and out with her dazzling smile, viva-
cious personality and pleasant demeanour. She has the capacity to light up every room she walks into. Her enthusiasm and energy are infectious and her desire to be helpful and do well at everything she attempts is to be commended. Athenaeum brings Animation to Enniscorthy
As part of ‘A Taste of Fashion’ at the Riverside Park Hotel on Wednesday 10th October, the Athenaeum Restoration Committee will introduce the glamorous and novel Cobh A n i m a t i o n Te a m t o Enniscorthy. The unique Fashion Show interval entertainment will feature 12 of the 15 ladies of the Cobh Animation Team who will model their exquisite Titanic era outfits and say a little about themselves and what they are doing for heritage and tourism in Cobh. An innovative idea conceived for Ti t a n i c Commemoration week in April has caught the imagination of all with these lovely ladies now meeting and greeting every cruise liner that docks in Cobh and posing in their elegant costumes for photos with tourists from every corner of the world. This inventive group of women are all volunteers who put their wonderful outfits together from items gathered in charity shops around Cork
and as you can see from the photos the results are stunning, totally capturing the essence and elegance of the Titanic period. I had the most pleasant surprise of bumping into these animated women on a recent trip to Cobh and couldn’t resist extending an invitation to them to come to Enniscorthy. They are a joy to listen to as they share their love for that age of grace and finesse and their passion for promoting their home town of Cobh. In a very short period of time they have become a much loved feature of Cobh tourism and are now sought out and invited aboard many of the liners to partake of afternoon tea with the captain and members of the crew. We could do worse in Enniscorthy than emulate this marvelous initiative and who knows maybe this visit will ignite a spark and sometime in the future visions of knights and their ladies roaming the parapets of the castle, pikemen and redcoats doing battle on The Hill and trench-coated rebels
defiantly holding the Athenaeum will be a regular feature of the town’s landscape and tourist trail! Bring it on! – Maria Nolan

C.A.N. 'Cottage Autism N e t w o r k ' We x f o r d w a s founded in 2000 by Servaas Dodebier and his wife Frederique. They gathered with a small group in a cottage to set up a support group for Autism in Co. Wexford. Each set of parents had already had at least one child diagnosed with the condition of Autism. There were little or no state services for Autism at the time and the group quickly realised that if they didn’t help themselves, nobody else would. C.A.N. was also one of the founder members of I.A.A. (Irish Autism Action) which is the national body support group. C.A.N. has evolved very quickly into having over 100 families as members in Co. Wexford and some surrounding areas. Many activities are organised for the children through sports, arts and equine assisted leaning, etc. Regular meetings are organised for the parents throughout the year keeping up to date with all the latest educational and behaviour modules. At least one respite break a year is organised for the families.
About six years ago because of broken services from the HSE, C.A.N. decided to set up its own Occupational Therapy service. All the parents agree that this was the single biggest step the group had taken so far. Occupational Therapy helps the children with their 'fine motor' skills which also helps with their general physical coordination.
Seamus O’Leary
This service is also very expensive, starting at €60,000 per year. This is why C.A.N. never stops fundraising and are always trying to come up with new ideas. The We CAN Fest is the brainwave of John Murphy with loads of help from Mairead Ennis. They assembled a great bunch of local talent such as Steven
Steven O’Brien
O'Brien, Noel Quaid, Colm Murphy, Jamie T. Murphy & Fiona Byrne, and Joey Ryan to play the night away in The Bailey basement on 31st August. The group would like to say a huge thank you to Stephen Bird who was the sound engineer. Also a huge thank you to the local shops who donated the spot prizes. It was a very enjoyable night and John is hoping to turn this into an annual event. It's people like John that keep coming up with new ideas that make this really important service possible, not forgetting of course the people of Co. Wexford who turn up to support the group. You can visit www.cottageautismnetwork.com for more information or check out Facebook and now also on Twitter.
Our thanks to John Murphy and Seamus O’Leary for filling us in on the work of Cottage Autism Network.

Joseph Doyle reports from We CAN Fest
It was a great night run very professionally by John Murphy. Well done lad, it’s not easy to run a show like this and I should know as I’ve run a few myself before. First up on to the stage was the ever popular Mr Music Man, Noel Quaid, who did really well singing a good few songs before going back to the archives and dusting off an old Tru’penny Opera song called Homecoming which was accompanied by his two co-stars – the famous Steven
O’Brien on guitar and the very Mr One Night Only, Colm Murphy on bass, a rare sight indeed. Then it was the turn of the dynamo duo, no not Batman and the boy wonder, no Jamie T Murphy and Fiona Byrne – these two stole the show for me doing a great version of Summer Wine and Jamie sang a great version of That’s Entertainment by the Jam. Steven O’Brien sang some great songs including My Baby Says It’s Too C o l d To S n o w – o n e o f m y favourites – well done Steven.
Last up was Joey Ryan with a taste of his old music and a bit off his new album which came out last month. Joey has grown up a lot since the early days when I first saw him perform in The Bailey and now he gets on with his performance and there’s less talk and more great playing. To say that Enniscorthy has no local talent is nonsense – we have a whole stack of it going by what I saw at the We CAN Fest – more talent than Louis Walsh will ever have!

Major international conference for Enniscorthy
Enniscorthy is to host the 2013 Annual Conference of the Council of International Investigators. The announcement was made at a press conference in The Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, on Friday night, September 28th, by Mr. Jim Kirby and Mr. John Sexton, two of America's top private investigators, who travelled from America to Enniscorthy to make the announcement. The conference will be held in The Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, from September 17th to September 21st 2013 and will be attended by over 100 delegates from upwards of 20 countries from around the world. The Council of International Investigators is a global organisation with members in over 45 countries. It was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955 with the emphasis of membership
placed on 'Quality' rather than 'Quantity'. Each applicant is selected for membership of the Council only after a rigorous screening programme during which she or he must agree to the adoption of and strict adherence to the Council's Code of Ethics which has met with universal approval by public law enforcement agencies, legislatures and public officials. Enniscorthy was selected for the 2013 gathering of members because of the contribution made to the organisation by Mr. Derek Nally of Bunclody. Mr. Nally, a retired Garda Detective Sergeant, was Ireland's first member of the Council and to this day remains the only Irishman to have held the top posts of President and Chairman of the Council. It is in recognition of his contribution that members
Colm Neville (Riverside Park Hotel), Cllr. Keith Doyle (Chairman, Enniscorthy Town Council), Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh at the Launch.
decided to host the 2013 conference in Ireland in his honour. Delegates will be afforded ample opportunities to view at first hand the many attractions Co. Wexford has to offer as a comprehensive social programme forms a major part of the conference schedule. The management of the Riverside Park Hotel has put at the disposal of the organising committee, their vast experience of organising major functions of this nature. The hotel has been block-booked for the entire conference and all meetings, seminars, lunches, etc., will take place there. Wexford County Council, Enniscorthy Town Council, New Ross Town Council and Wexford Tourism are all enthusiastically supporting the conference in a series of practical ways and have been instrumental in securing this event for Enniscorthy.

Enniscorthy Golf Club - ever improving
Enniscorthy Golf Club has seen many changes to its course and pavilion throughout its 105 years in existence. Many of the mature members relate tales of the old clubhouse located on the New Ross road and the original nine-hole course layout. Most members remember when the renowned course designer Eddie Hackett made his mark on the course as it changed from a nine-hole to an eighteen-hole course. Since then several alterations over the years including the 12th and 13th and this year the 15th came on line among other improvements. Now the club embarks upon the first stage of a long-term aspiration to make all the greens sand-based and the continua-
tion of this vision commences this week with the development of the 16th and 17th greens. For some time the 17th has been problematic especially with the persistent rain during the last few summers giving it little rest. Today’s discerning golfer expects to have the course presented in prime condition all year round and the managem e n t a n d c o u r s e s t a ff o f Enniscorthy endeavour to deliver. Visitors and members alike comment on the views of the Wexford countryside that can be seen from several locations on the course but those especially from the 7th, 11th and 16th tee-boxes are spectacular. But a great course is only half the story. As the town of
Enniscorthy is renowned for its friendliness and hospitality so too is the clubhouse at Enniscorthy Golf Club. Barry Whelan, a well known and respected native of the town, has the franchise for the bar and restaurant and has a proven track record for providing excellent service and quality fare. Pavilion membership is an option for those who wish to avail of the facilities of the clubhouse including various social activities and free WiFi access. If you’re considering taking up the sport of golf look no further than a quality course and club that will be there for another 100 years, ever improving, giving value and facilities second to none.

Coveting Cobh
Bellefield Social Initiative Croi Sasta Mens Group were on the move again last month when they headed to the picturesque town of Cobh to do the Titanic Experience. Queenstown, as it was once known, was resplendent in sultry, summer sunshine giving our men the opportunity to see her at her very best. Cobh is a most beautiful town and her beauty was further enhanced on the day by the majestic presence of the luxury cruise liner - The Balmoral - anchored quayside. A sister ship of the ill-fated Titanic, this was the Balmoral’s second visit this year to Cobh - the first being to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic on 11th April. The regal elegance of this luxurious floating hotel and the influx of its well-to-do passengers gave Cobh an air of affluence and excitement that we haven’t been having in Wexford since the Celtic Tiger stopped purring and it made our day both pleasant and uplifting. The Titanic Experience itself, at a special group rate of €6.50 a head, is informative if a little brief and all too quickly you find yourself back out on the street wondering where to go and what to do. Not to fear you will be directed to the Cobh Interpretive Centre which is only a short walk away or to the magnificent Cathedral towering above the town which is also just a short walk away – albeit an arduous uphill climb – but this should be of no consequence to Enniscorthians well used to climbing hills. Our men chose the path to the Interpretive Centre and enjoyed a pleasant and rela-

tively inexpensive lunch there surrounded once again by Cobh’s wonderful heritage. The poignant statue of Annie Murphy and her two brothers stands just outside and is a reminder to all that the Cobh experience is really all about emigration. Annie and her brothers being the first Irish emig r a n t s p ro c e s s e d o n t h e infamous Ellis Island. At 4pm The Balmoral was due to sail so we headed for the tranquil Town Park with its decorative Victorian bandstand to see her off and wave to those on board just as people before us had done many, many times in the past. It was there that we had the good fortune to come across the Cobh Animation Team - a group of 15 volunteers who add to the occasion each time a ship docks in Cobh by heading quayside to welcome the visitors to the town dressed in 1912 Titanic costumes which they fashion and make themselves. This is a remarkable

group who are cheerful and friendly and look amazing in their fabulous outfits and are ready to stop and chat and have their photos taken and must be a most valuable tourism asset to their home town. We were delighted to find that the group are prepared to travel and talk to other groups about themselves and what they are doing for Cobh - so of course we extended an invitation to them to come to Enniscorthy. They are a wonderful group who absolutely love what they do and are extremely proud to do it and are only too willing to spread the word - so watch this space you will be seeing them in Enniscorthy in the near future. After some excellent entertainment on the journey home, compliments of Willie Kearns on guitar, our Mens Group returned to Bellefield – tired but happy! – Maria Nolan

Wexford encourages over 50s
Over 50s are being encouraged to start their own businesses under plans announced by Minister John Perry and Wexford County Enterprise Board for ‘National 50+ Enterprise Day’ on Friday, October 5th. Aimed at anyone aged 50 and over, the initiative may boost the number of ‘senior entrepreneurs’ in Ireland by increasing the number of new companies set up by people in that age group. To mark ‘National 50+ Enterprise Day’, the Wexford County Enterprise Board is jointly hosting a day-long conference in Dublin under the theme of ‘Succeeding In Your Start-Up.’ Building on the success of previous workshops for senior entrepreneurs, the Enterprise Boards will be focusing on areas such as sourcing finance, effective

management skills and business exit planning. Three Irish entrepreneurs, who all set up a business when they were in their 50s, will be sharing their experiences and insights on the day; Jill Aston set up an advertising bag stand company called ‘Bagsitt’ after getting the idea on holiday; John Carrig set up an IT services company called ‘Carrig
Solutions’ after facing redundancy from a multinational IT company and John Shortt, a former amateur racing cyclist, set up ‘Life-Cycle’ when he spotted a gap in the market to distribute bicycles, clothing and components. The Minister for Small Business, John Perry T.D., launched ‘National 50+ Enterprise Day’ saying: “Increasing the number of new start-up businesses is a crucial part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs. With thousands of potential entrepreneurs aged 50 and over in this country, National 50+ Enterprise Day is a new initiative now in place to help encourage a higher level of entrepreneurship in Ireland.” Tom Banville from Wexford County Enterprise Board, said: “By telling the stories of those who successfully started a busi-
ness in their 50s and by highlighting the various supports on offer, we want to encourage more people in this age group to consider setting up their own company.” Running from 9am to 5pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blanchardstown, the national conference on October 5th is being held as part of EU SME Week 2012. In addition to presentations from well-known management consultants, Blaise Brosnan and Lar Burke, bank representatives will be at hand to provide advice on how to secure start-up funding from financial institutions. The subsidised cost to attend the ‘National 50+ Enterprise Day’ conference is €25, which includes all conference materials and a light lunch. Bookings can be made online through www.fingalceb.ie/50+.
Government priorities Wexford TD and Government Chief Whip Paul Kehoe has said that creating jobs, enshrining children’s rights in the Constitution and getting a better deal on our banking debt are the Government’s main priorities for the new Dáil term. “It’s going to be a very busy few months ahead for the Government between now and the end of the year. We are determined to make continuing progress in the areas of jobs, finance and children’s rights. “Job creation remains at the heart of every decision this Government takes. The
Personal Insolvency Bill will move towards enactment this Dáil term, which will have a positive impact on families and businesses in financial difficulty. Implementation of the Action Plan for Jobs will continue, allowing us to move from the old, failed economy, to a new one based on enterprise, exports and innovation. Work is already underway for the Action Plan for 2013, which will be even more ambitious in its scope. “Getting a better deal on our banking debt will be an essential step for our economy. Work on securing a deal at European level has intensified
in recent weeks and will continue apace this autumn. The efforts of the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, have been strengthened by a number of positive developments in Europe and our return to the long term bond markets for the first time since September 2010 is proof that the perception of Ireland internationally has improved significantly. “This year’s Budget will undoubtedly be one of the most difficult in the lifetime of this Government. We must make the necessary decisions to get our public finances back under control and put the coun-
Paui Kehoe, TD.
try back on a sustainable track. Difficult choices will have to be made to ensure we can successfully exit the bailout programme and regain full control of our own financial affairs.”

Austerity not working
Enniscorthy Sinn Féin Cllr Johnny Mythen has accused the Fine Gael/Labour government of obeying the orders of unelected bankers as they prepare more mass austerity measures for Budget 2013. The local Sinn Féin councillor said that attempts by the government to justify the paying out of over €60 billion into dysfunctional banks while vital services were cut was clearly an example of the emperor having no clothes. Speaking last month Cllr Mythen said: "Again we witness a government obeying the orders of unelected bankers and huge corporations. I ask the question when are they going to even attempt to stand up for our nation? This is the kernel of our problem. Under the cloak of convenience they cut grants to education, threaten reductions in pensions and disability payments, cut winter fuel allowances while on the 1st of October they will willingly and without a whisper hand over one billion euros to senior unsecured, unguaranteed bond holders." "We, the ordinary citizens of this country, have already poured €60 billion into dysfunctional banks. Compared to our size and population no other country in the E.U. was asked to pay as much per capita… As long as this austerity policy continues to be pursued by our Government our unemployment level will rise, our young talented people will continue to emigrate, and our domestic economy will crumble.”
Time to revive our sugar beet industry
A strong, sustainable agricultural sector will benefit every citizen on this island. That was the message from the Sinn Féin team at the National Ploughing Championships last week where finance spokesperson, Pearse Doherty, along with local Sinn Féin rep Oisin O’Connell launched the party’s plan for the revival of the Irish Sugar Beet industry. Mr O'Connell, the Chairperson of County Wexford Sinn Féin and a local tillage farmer, has called for the construction of new bio-refinery plant for the production of sugar and ethanol from sugar beet and grain in New Ross. Mr O'Connell said: “The collapse of the Irish sugar beet industry in 2006, brought about
by the loss of our national quota and the closure of our processing plants, not only adversely affected tillage farmers and others directly involved in the sector, but also had a knock on effect right across Irish society. People sometimes forget that a successful industry like sugar can have huge benefits for all of society. “The IFA estimates that farmers and farm families spend €8 billion per year in our economy. It’s thought that 300,000 jobs are supported by the agriculture, food and related industries. For every €100 of agriculture output there is a further €73 of output to the wider economy. It's very evident that a strong agri community can lift a stagnant
economy like ours and help get people back to work." Deputy Doherty pointed to the job creation benefits of revitalising the industry: “What we need is investment in sustainable, lucrative industries like sugar beet processing. Sinn Féin is proposing the construction of a new bio-refinery plant for the production of sugar and ethanol from sugar beet and grain at a cost of €350 million. It will create 5,000 jobs and be profitable within the first year. Why? Because to be so gainful sugar beet prices need to be above €570 a tonne. When you take that sugar beet prices currently stand at €850 per tonne for imported sugar, the revival of our domestic sugar beet indus-
try makes total economic sense." “There are obviously those out there who may feel differently. I know many beet farmers were stung hard when Greencore sold their industry away. In order to make this industry work they will need to be certain guarantees. No one company should ever again be allowed to control 100% of the Irish quota. Beet growers and those working directly in the industry must have access to fair profits. The industry will need to be safeguarded and never again sacrificed for the personal profits of select individuals." “In the coming weeks and months Sinn Féin will be seeking to meet with interested par-
Northern Agriculture Minister, Sinn Féin's Michelle O’Neill, with North Wexford S.F. spokesperson Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin at the launch of Wexford Sinn Féin’s document proposing the revival of the sugar beet industry in the South East. The launch took place at the National Ploughing Championships in New Ross.
ties whether they be ex-beet farmers, rural community groups or agri contractors, to discuss how best we can resurrect the Irish sugar beet industry.

MAC: IF HE HAD HIS SAY, WHAT WOULD HE SAY?
OPENING Monday 8th October
You can conquer any obstacle through a gentle approach. Our approach to any problem is how we perceive it. Is it something that is weighing us down or is it an opportunity to change. By reframing our view of these so-called obstacles they can become just challenges or ways of helping us grow. Throwing ourselves into the middle of a challenge often works out so much better than putting it off, procrastinating. It's “death by a thousand knives". I watch my dog arriving out onto farms, greeted by what looks like a pack of marauding dogs and despite my apprehension he more often than not jumps enthusiastically out into the middle of them and is oblivious to their growls, just ignores the aggression and accompanies me to the sick animal to be treated. I love his approach to the obvious challenge facing him just to dive straight in and diffuse the tension by calling their bluff. It's the same for most of us in our daily lives, if we face down our fears they tend to dissolve in front of our very eyes. "Feel the fear and do it anyway!"
A good friend of mine often says "better to be sorry for having done something than sorry for not having done something!" Think about it. It's our fear that limits us most times from stepping up to the plate and being counted. What is it you'd really like to do today?

SCHOOLS RIP OFF The Government has decided to charge our schools VAT at a rate of 23.5% on any expenditure incurred on building or maintenance work. This is a new rule which will adversely affect every school in the country. Up to now schools were exempt from paying this tax which meant that every euro that a parent donated to the school went directly for the benefit of the pupils and students in that establishment. Now, however, the greedy Government has sneakily introduced this regulation to rob the parents of this country of 23.5% of every cent donated for the good of the school. They have cashed in on the goodwill of the parents who are actually generously subsidising the cost of the so-called free education system. It is difficult to see any justification whatever for this move which has been introduced in a very underhanded fashion. And to add insult to injury schools are not entitled to claim back the VAT on any of this expenditure. Time to talk to your Government TD methinks. PUBLIC SERVICE DEBATE We can’t turn on the radio or tel-
evision these days without hearing people like Eddie Hobbs condemning the wages and perks available to those who work in the public service. One would get the impression that every public service worker in the country was picked up every morning in a Merc and transported to a job where they didn’t have a lot to do other than count their allowances and calculate their pensions. The reality, however, is much different. The vast majority of public service workers earn less than €40,000 a year and are struggling to pay mortgages, car loans, personal loans, trying to educate children and do all the things that the private sector workers have to do. Public service workers, by the way, are the guys who sweep the streets, clear the drains, come out at night when there is a flood alert, do the menial jobs in offices, work as nurses, teachers, guards and so on. I think, therefore, that when we listen to those debates we must try and separate the ordinary worker from the fat cats who occupy the top of the public service. They are in a minority but are the beneficiaries of a lot of perks that the rest of us, including the lower echelons of

View from the Hill View from the Hill is an occasional column, by a local contributor, which looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond.
the public service itself can only envy. Certainly their position should be looked at, and allowances etc. scrutinised. But let’s be careful not to demonise the ordinary worker who was lucky to get and keep a job in these difficult times. And remember also that every time you reduce the wages of the ordinary worker you are reducing the amount of money spent in local shops and businesses therefore causing further problems down the line. So let’s get sensible.
CHRISTMAS TOO EARLY Departed the Hill recently to take a day trip to Dublin to have a look around and see the sights. I don’t get away that often so I suppose I am in awe of some of the things I see in the great metropolis. As I was strolling down Grafton Street I couldn’t but be amazed at the Christmas display already on show at that famous store Brown Thomas. Well, I don’t know about you, but I think that this is ridiculously early. It’s unfair to parents and to children as it is
taking the mystique out of that season for the young ones. Of course I understand that retailers are under severe pressure nowadays and that every angle of sales opportunity must be taken but I hope that our local retailers will be more realistic in this regard.
CAMOGIE CHAMPIONS Once again the Wexford camogie team has succeeded in winning an All Ireland Final. The details of the third time victory and homecoming will no doubt be covered in greater detail in another part of the Slaney News. That, as they say, is not my area. I would like to comment on another, probably in the long term more important, aspect of this great achievement. Young girls in today’s society regrettably have probably few icons to look up to other than pop stars and so-called celebs. Boys tend to look up to sportspeople whether its gaelic , boxing, soccer, rugby and so on. Over recent years we in Wexford are privileged to have as heroes, for girls and boys alike, the young women of our camogie team who have brought such honour to our county. And it’s working. Over the past few years camogie has gone from strength to strength

and at the time of writing the under 16 Wexford camogie team have just qualified for the All Ireland Semi Final. The best of luck to them, and our heartfelt thanks to the seniors who have brought us such pleasure and have had such an impact for good in the past few years.
AND FINALLY… Congratulations to all involved in the Tidy Towns on the improved position of Enniscorthy in this year’s competition. In an earlier column I mentioned the great work of these volunteers who in hail, rain and worse give of their time to make our town a more pleasant place. It’s nice now to record this success and say well done.

WEXFORD HOSPITAL … … All of us who visit Wexford General Hospital or talk to staff and patients will be well aware that all is not well there – staff shortages and low staff morale are now serious issues. Despite the experience of the Slaney News and many others, local Labour Party councillor Pat Cody is putting a brave face on a recent service update from the HSE. In a press release Pat states that the HSE has confirmed to him that: "The 2012 Service Plan across all services in Co. Wexford is on schedule and service targets are being met, despite the major challenges of reduced resources and staffing numbers." Cllr. Cody wel-
comed the recent service enhancements achieved which will be hugely beneficial for Co. Wexford, including: * New Consultant staffing Medical Assessment Unit in Wexford General. * All Patient Treatment Targets will be delivered on within budget. * Wexford General Hospital will go 'live' later this year as a National Screening Site for Rectal Cancer. * The €17m Emergency Department/Delivery Suite/Concourse Project commenced in April 2012. * Tara House Day Hospital for Wexford Mental Health Services opened in Gorey and Rehab Unit opened in
Enniscorthy. €6.5m Elderly Care Unit in Wexford Town on target to open in 2013. Cllr. Cody concluded: "These developments are all welcome and will ensure that services for patients throughout Co. Wexford are equal to services available anywhere in the country, which is the least our community at large deserves.” “It is also vital that the Home Care packages for our elderly, to be able to live in their communities, are maintained and at present in excess of 200 Home Care packages are provided with mostly HSE staff maintaining clients in their own homes in Wexford.” *

Minister Phil Hogan chats with Wexford Local Development staff.
Despite the inclement weather conditions of wind and rain, the acres of muck and mud and the foreboding clouds of doom and gloom, this year’s Ploughing Championships at New Ross from 25th–27th September, drew large crowds who managed to enjoy themselves to the full. Muck or no muck this was certainly the place to be or to be seen! The exhibits were more allembracing and extensive, exhibitors more enthusiastic and friendly and Ministers more plentiful! Prices seemed keener than ever although I did hear youngsters complaining about the pricing of burgers at €6 each. I was delighted to see Wexford Hat Designer Patsy Flood O`Connor of Mad4hats exhibiting some of her wonderful designs at very competitive prices indeed with a basket collection of woollen hats at only €10 – sure you couldn’t go wrong at that. I succumbed to temptation and came away with a beautiful

Downton Abbey style called ‘Geraldine’ which was… eh… a wee bit more expensive. The Leader Village opened by Environment Minister Phil Hogan was a most worthwhile visit showcasing all that is being achieved by individuals and groups the length and breadth of the country in spite of the dreaded recession. With hats and scarves to die for, candles that looked good enough to eat and edibles that looked too good for eating it was a veritable Aladdin’s Cave. Wexford Local Development was to the fore with Chairman Pat Rath, CEO Brian Kehoe, Evaluating Officers Helena Dempsey, Seamus Doran and Tom Bermingham and Marie Louise Byrne all on hand to give the Minister a warm, Wexford welcome and indeed treat him to a well earned cuppa as he completed his tour of the Village, sampling the wares and even answering an awkward question or two flanked by Wexford’s

own Chief Whip Paul Kehoe and Michael Darcy. The O’Duffy Cup was a special guest at the Ploughing courtesy of Wexford Camogie and Club Wexford. Together with their sponsor Creane & Creane they invited all to take the Speed Ball Challenge and test the speed they hurl or kick a ball. The overall winner was our own Jack Guiney who hurled the ball at the remarkable speed of 90mph and indeed said that he would have made the ton if he had been able to take a run at it! The mood was upbeat and positive among punters and exhibitors alike sharing the good, the bad and the ugly and proving that the continued popularity of the Ploughing Championships is all about meeting and networking, that wonderful coming together that Irish people seem to crave and enjoy so much regardless of atmospheric or economic climes. – An edited version of a longer piece by Maria Nolan

Martin Doyle U-10 Hurling
In late September Bellefield once again hosted the Martin Doyle Memorial U-10 Hurling Tournament in memory of former President and avid hurling admirer Martin Doyle. Now in its 5th year it once again dished up an excellent competition with Ballymurn beating Kilrush to win the Cup and Oylegate beating Rapparees to take the Shield - both games were won by the narrowest of margins and the standard was high with some lovely skills demon-
strated by all the teams involved. Chief Tournament Organiser and Secretary of Rapparees/Starlights Coiste na nOg Ger McVeigh thanked all who participated and said that once again there was a great turn out and the competition was a most worthwhile and enjoyable one. Padraig Doyle, son of the late Martin, thanked Ger on behalf of the Doyle family for all the work he had personally put into the event and said that his father would have been delighted with the level of
skill displayed and he pleaded with all the young players present to continue playing, as he said, the best game in the world - hurling. Padraig then called on his mother Mrs. Maeve Doyle and her grandsons, Cathal Murphy and William Doyle, to present trophies and medals to winners and runners-up and thanked all the parents of the Rapparees U-10 team for the sandwiches and delicious cakes and buns enjoyed by the large crowd in the clubhouse after the games. – Maria Nolan

The Chairman of County Wexford Sinn Féin last month renewed his call on the government to lower the excise duty on petrol and diesel stating that rising fuel prices will bring the nation to a standstill. Oisin O'Connell said that unless our government followed the lead of countries like France, who had recently cut their excise duty on fuel, unfixable damage would be done to the agri, logistics and transport sectors, as well as to ordinary families who are struggling to keep their cars on the road. Mr O'Connell said: "The rising cost of fuel and the inaction of our government to deal with it by reducing the excise duty on petrol and diesel is impacting harshly across Irish society. Last week the Farm Contractors of Ireland predicted that unless something is done soon farm contractors may stage nationwide strikes." "It's not just farmers who are suffering due to the high fuel costs. The rising price of petrol and diesel is devastating logistics and transport

This includes VAT at 23%, a mineral oil tax and a carbon tax. For every €10 spent at the pump, €6 is going directly back to the government." "Fine Gael and Labour have said that nothing can be done about the high excise duty on fuel but that's simply not true. Look at France. Just last month the French government agreed to cut the tax on fuel there by 6 cents. The government and the oil com-

"It's high time that the Fine Gael/Labour coalition followed the lead of other countries and reduced the excise duty on petrol and diesel instead of raising the tax. In last December’s budget they added 1c on a litre of fuel. In the three years before that Fianna Fáil added 14c onto the price of a litre of petrol and diesel. If measures aren't introduced soon to reduce the cost of fuel this nation will be brought to a standstill."

Dick Bailey Stages Rally
The 41st running of what was formerly known as the Wexford Stages Rally, now known as the Riverbank House Hotel Dick Bailey Stages Rally, took place last month over two days in South Wexford. Day 1 stages took in the Clearistown/Tagoat area while Day 2 stages moved to the Taghmon/Foulksmills area. After a great competitive battle, local man James Stafford eventually came out on top. There have been many battles in this great event over the years, and the winners' podium has included all the giants of Irish rallying such as Austin McHale, Billy Coleman, Bertie Fisher and the late Frank Meagher. The locals also have been up there with the best, Eamon Boland topping the list with eight brilliant victories. That local tradition is being continued by Ballycullane’s James Stafford.

A BEAUTY TO BEHOLD This is a sight we’re becoming very familiar with as We x f o r d ’s A l l - I r e l a n d Camogie 2012 team returned to Enniscorthy’s Fair Green to a civic reception and there to greet the triple champions were hundreds of purple and gold supporters includ-

remains an institution in Enniscorthy right up to the present day. There are three bars to choose from in this pub. The first is the Rasher Counter which got its name from the grocery end. The clientele in the Rasher are mostly middle-aged but there’s one or two trainees who drink up in the Rasher Counter. Strangers tend to first hit the Rasher Counter and soon enjoy the craic with the regulars and are usually told stories by the landlord of his rugby or football days. The Rasher has great craic on a Monday as there’s usually a sing-song but the Rasher is not the place to be if you don’t like horse racing. The Middle Bar is the place to be in Doyles if you’re into craic or want to be slagged. You’ll need nerves of steel to drink in the Middle Bar but the customers in that bar are mixed in ages and are always slagging each other especially Shamrocks and Rapps arguments. So don’t

Important gig proves a success
A hugely important gig took place in Enniscorthy last Thursday 27th September for Arthur’s Day. It was important from an Enniscorthy festival point of view as it was attended by a number of prominent people in Diageo (who are considering sponsoring the Riverside Jump Festival next year) and the gig was filmed to show senior management in Dublin. Organiser, Eamonn Doyle, was hoping for a full venue in Treacy’s Hotel with lots of

TO ARTHUR!
ARTHURS DAY 2012 The oldest pub in Enniscorthy celebrated Arthur’s Day last Thursday but for the owners, staff and customers of the famous watering hole it was a double celebration as coinciding with Arthur’s Day and the birthday of the founder of the black stuff, Guinness, Doyles of the Duffry were celebrating being 85 years in business – that’s how long the Doyle family have been at the helm of this pub. The current owners, John and Mary Doyle, took over the reins from John’s father and mother, Joseph Doyle and Brigid Joseph Doyle, who bought this pub from the then owners 85 years ago. Joseph served his time in this pub first as a messenger boy then as a clerk and then as owner. This pub has been through three different families – Jordans twice and now Doyles. The name on the door may have changed several times since it was built in 1702 but Doyles of the Duffry

Lounge to this day. Arthur’s Day was a great success at Doyles with the music being provided by the Dying Kick band fronted by Martin Codd Jnr which went down well with the clientele. The day was completed by two of the regulars doing their part for this double celebration – Peter and Ger sang The West Awake and three other well known songs and every customer got complimentary food and some free pints on Arthur. The management and staff of John Doyles would like to thank all their customers for their support over the years and here’s to another 85 years.

Craftsman and woodturner Pat Carroll, originally from Enniscorthy, lives and works near Camolin in the shadow of Slieve Bhuí, at the end of a valley, surrounded by forested slopes. Pat brings his skill and sure touch to each piece he lovingly crafts, watching the grain of the wood come to life on the lathe. Much of this raw material comes from locally felled timber but Pat also loves the variety that non-native wood from sustainable sources brings to his art. The colour and patina of some of these exotic hardwoods is very different from the paler shades of Irish timber. Careful oiling, polishing, texturing and sometimes staining combine to produce beautifully tactile pieces of work which demand to be picked up, held and examined. Pat's considerable skill means that he is in great demand locally and nation-

There was a great turn out for the Sponsored Walk in aid of the Templeshannon Community Centre on Sunday 30th September despite the weather! The crowd assembled at the Centre right on time at 2.00pm. All the walkers completed the 6km walk to Cooladine (even some kids). Refreshments were served at the halfway mark of the walk where the helpers were on hand to give out water and encourage the walkers on their way. Afterwards teas, coffees and other light refreshments were served in the hall where some of the locals helped out. There was plenty of chat and praise for everyone. It was a great success and we are looking forward to making it an annual event. The Board of Management and all the staff of Templeshannon Community and Childcare Centre would like to thank all those who helped to make the day such a success and in particular our local sponsors.
