LIFE OF THE BATTERY

FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES

(LAPTOPS AND PHONES)

2 3

BY DAVID POHLUDEK FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES

While everyone knows that battery life matters, the battery itself is often ignored in the story of the modern laptop and gadget. Gains are assumed to come from processor improvements or more efficient screens. In fact, batteries have changed over the last half-decade, and in doing so they’ve enabled systems that are razor-thin, yet last all day, and can continue that performance for several years. Although your battery will eventually die, proper care can put off the inevitable. Here's how to keep your laptop battery working for as long as possible. 1. Squeezing every drop of juice out of a lithium ion battery (the type used in today's laptops) strains and weakens it. Doing this once or twice won't kill the battery, but the cumulative effect of frequently emptying your battery will shorten its lifespan. 2. When you use your laptop, make sure the vents are unblocked. Never work with the laptop on pillows or cushions. If possible, put it on a raised stand that allows for plenty of airflow. 3. If you're going to be working exclusively on AC power for a week or more, remove the battery first. You don't want it too empty when you take it out. An unused battery loses power over time, and you don't want all the power to drain away, so remove it when it's at least halfcharged. It's a fact of life that sooner or later, every laptop battery hits old age. Most do well for between 18 and 36 months, depending on how heavily they're used. A typical battery pack can be recharged between 300 and 500 times before the chemicals inside start to wear out, with the result that a battery that once powered a system for three hours can now run for only an hour or less. That's when it's time to replace the battery. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

TIDY TOWN AWARDS 2018

CREDIT UNIONS COME OUT ON TOP!

Liam Waters, Acting Manager of Enniscorthy Credit Union: “We are delighted to receive this award.”

credit unions have been voted Number one for customer Experience in the 2018 cXi ireland customer Experience Report, taking the award for the fourth year running. This is the first time, anywhere in the world, that the same organisation has taken the award for four consecutive years. Enniscorthy credit union joins 250 other credit unions across the Republic of ireland in celebrating this outstanding achievement.

The CXi Ireland Report is an annual survey which asks consumers to rate their experiences of 156 brands across 10 different sectors. More than 2,500 customer experiences were evaluated and credit unions again emerged as the overall winners, being rated highest for empathy and for the commitment of their staff. According to Liam Waters, Acting Manager of Enniscorthy Credit Union: “We are delighted to receive this award for the

fourth consecutive year. It marks the total commitment which our credit union personnel have to serving the needs of our members. Our members understand that all decisions are taken at local level, by people who will take time to understand their needs.” Credit unions were singled out within the report for the powerful bond forged with members - and the fact that the relationship with members was built completely on trust.

The 2018 report highlighted the significant gap between people’s views of the customer experience offered by credit unions compared to the banks. Indeed, the leading bank in the survey was in a lowly 79th position. Liam Waters noted that despite the repeated success of credit unions within these awards, Enniscorthy Credit Union would not be resting on its laurels and would continue to improve its services to its members in the years ahead. n

Great day for St Patrick’s School The sod-turning for the new school for the students of St. Patrick’s Special School in Enniscorthy took place on 24th october. With a contract value of €14.5 million, the 5,940 square metres building will provide much-needed learning facilities for at least 400 students in Enniscorthy and surrounding areas. Mythen Construction will be the main contractor for the

mainly single-storey, and part three-storey building. The project will consist of 20 classrooms with en-suite toilets, junior and senior dining areas,

general purposes hall, specialist teaching rooms, and clinician facilities. The sod-turning was a big day for St. Patrick’s and its

school principal, Lee Rogers, who has been very proactive in getting the new school sanctioned and getting constuction underway. After 983 days of a wait, the Drumgoold site will now become a construction site. Mr Rogers would like to thank all who have worked tirelessly over many years to see a new school being built, it has been a great community effort he said. n

Well done to Adrienne Murphy and all the team behind the recent second coming of Buddy the Musical. Our photo shows Adrienne (front left) handing over a cheque for €9,260 to Olive Ruane from Pieta House. Adrienne would like to thank all the cast and crew especially lead performer, Cado, who gave so kindly of his time and mileage. This most recent donation brings to over €24,000 the total amount donated from the show to Pieta House.

Grants Pharmacy is a long established family business which was set up by James Joseph Grant, MPSi, in St. aidan’s Shopping centre, Wexford, in 1980. Joe Grant emigrated from Ireland at the tender age of 16 after completing his Leaving Cert. He found manual work in Australia and New Zealand before going to college in the latter and graduated with a degree in Pharmacy. Joe went on to buy his own shop in Dunedin, NZ, and married an Irish woman, Bernie Close, and together had five children. Fast forward 10 years, and Joe opened his own shop in St. Aidan’s Shopping Centre, Wexford, after a huge decision to move lock, stock and family back to Ireland to be close to their respective families. Joe made a lasting impression on the local community, many of whom remember him as a generous, kind-hearted pharmacist who had a special desire to help poorer patients in particular. Joe would often visit sick customers after

GRANTS

PHARMACY

YOUR LOCAL PHARMACY OPENING MID-NOVEMBER ON RAFTER STREET work before heading home to his noisy household. Joe sadly passed away in 1995 after suffering a stroke. Since then, under the expert management of Joe’s daughter, Leonie, the business has grown to include outlets in Wexford, Arklow and Gorey as well as its existing Enniscorthy outlet which opened in 2011. Now, with the acquisition of the old Dunne’s Stores building on Rafter Street, by husband and wife duo, property developer Martin Sinnott and pharmacist Leonie Grant, Grants Pharmacy will be opening a second outlet in Enniscorthy. The existing successful outlet at Duffry Gate will continue in operation also. Grants will be open on

Rafter St from the middle of November under the day-today management of popular Enniscorthy born and bred pharmacist Glenn Nolan. Grants Pharmacy will occupy about one-third of the ground floor area of the existing substantial building. The remaining ground floor area will be available to other retailers with some interest already being expressed. There are exciting plans for the overhead floors with Wexford County Council keen on developing a state-of-theart Library there. The futuristic looking plans for the glass-dominated structure, if successful, would make the new Enniscorthy Library one of the most advanced libraries in the country with a strong

emphasis on technology and interactiveness. We understand that the Council has applied for government funding under an urban regeneration scheme and are confident of a positive outcome. The entrance to the potential new library would be from the old Dunne’s carpark so there would be easy access and parking. Grants own plans for their new concept pharmacy are also very impressive and Leonie is excited at all the possibilities the new premises will allow. Clients can expect a customer-friendly waiting area with comfortable seating, tea/coffee/water facilities, phone recharging points, children’s play area, etc. Clients will also be able to sit down with their Grants pharmacist for

consultations in private. The pharmacy will also have a convenient back entrance from the car-park as well as entry from Rafter Street. For people on the go, Grants new concept of a Fast Prescription Pod will mean no more long waiting times for shorter prescriptions and their Click and Collect prescription service will allow the medicines to be ready before you arrive instore. At the rear of the premises will be a number of treatment rooms which will be available to service providers such as chiropractors, massage therapists, dieticians, beauty therapists, counsellors and complementary-medicine treatment providers of all kinds on a “pop-up” basis i.e. these

providers can take space as and when needed without having the long-term costs like rent, rates, utilities etc associated with setting up their own full-time premises. Grants’ popular loyalty scheme, which can give up to 10% off all purchases, will be available in the new premises also. With Glenn Nolan specialising in Men’s Health and the Elderly, Leonie focusing on Mother and Baby care (with five young children of her own, Leonie is no stranger to both the joys and hard work involved in motherhood), and pharmacist Lorraine Nolan (a native of Bunclody) expert in all aspects of Diabetes, there is always a pharmacist in Grants to assist you whatever your requirements. In addition to being a mother of five, Leonie is well known in hockey circles nationally and recently represented Ireland at the Masters World Cup. With five shop units now to manage, Leonie may find her hockey career will have to take a back seat for a while! Looking at the wider picture, Leonie and husband, Martin, are keen to help in the overall process of regenerating the heart of Enniscorthy and their preparedness to take over a property that nobody else wanted, and that has lain idle for over ten years in the centre of our town, is a sign of their willingness to play a leading role in that regeneration. The Slaney News hopes their confidence in Enniscorthy is rewarded by a long and successful retailing future on Rafter Street. n

London Guild delegation visits Enniscorthy town Enniscorthy historical Reenactment Society was happy once again to add history, colour, pageantry and atmosphere to the town for a visiting delegation from the Guild of Freemen of the city of London on 23rd october at Enniscorthy castle. In exquisite autumnal sunshine, the 32-strong contingent was given a walking tour of the town incorporating visits to St. Mary’s and St. Aidan’s Cathedral accompanied by local historian Aidan Ryan who gave them a brief and interesting synopsis of Enniscorthy’s colourful past. As they entered Enniscorthy Castle our reenactors formed a guard of honour in Norman costume to showcase our Norman heritage which Rory O’Connor outlined in detail for our guests. The Master of the Guild, John Barber, stopped to converse with us prior to entering the Castle to tell us what

a ‘little gem of a town’ we have. High praise indeed from high quarters. Once inside our visitors were treated to large glasses of Jackford’s Gin, tall glasses of craft Clever Beer and delicious nibbles of local produce including cheeses, vegetables and would you believe – buffalo, beautifully prepared and presented by our award-win-

ning The Wilds restaurant along with exquisite and almost devilish chocolate from local Bean & Goose. Trust me it was a veritable feast for the eyes never mind the stomach! Our guests were welcomed by Town Manager, Liz Hore, who called on Willie Kavanagh, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District

Council to address the drawingroom gathering. Willie extended a warm greeting to all to our 13th century castle, the home he said of ‘Anglo Norman Knights, Gaelic Kings and Elizabethan Adventurers’. Willie went on to extol the attributes of our town and the very many projects in the pipeline for it. Chamber President, Maree

Lyng, welcomed home John Nolan of Ballycourcey who was travelling with the delegation and hoped that they were enjoying their stay in the town saying, ‘Brexit may be just round the corner but communities in Ireland and England will continue to work together.’ Maree encouraged the group to view Enniscorthy as a possible venue for invest-

ment saying that if they did so they would be ‘revered forever here’. To m B a n v i l l e o f t h e Wexford Local Enterprise Office spoke of the many wonderful projects due to come to fruition over the next 10 years including the M11 Business Campus, Trinity Wharf and the Hatch Lab, and had a brochure for everyone in the audience – Wexford Economic & Community Investment Programme 2018–2022. Guild Master, John Barber, said, ‘Enniscorthy is a gem, a wonderful, unspoiled little gem’, and was lavish in his praise of the treatment the group was receiving here from Council, Chamber and Riverside Park Hotel. Everything he said was top class. A tremendous endorsement of our town that we hope will materialise into investment and job creation going forward. – Maria Nolan

Success for Gethings

New Primary Care Centre for Enniscorthy Wexford TD James browne revealed last month that a new primary care centre will be built in Enniscorthy. The HSE has confirmed to Deputy Browne that the new primary care centre should be ready for occupation in the third quarter of 2020. “This is terrific news for Enniscorthy town and district. The HSE has written a letter of intent to the developer about the layout of the building. A range of services is due to provided here, including speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, public health nursing, dental services, ophthalmology, home help, diabetes, care-

doc, mental health, TUSLA, psychology and social work”, Deputy Browne explained. “Moving to a primary carecentred approach to healthcare is critical to delivering better medical care to people in their own communities and closer to their homes. It will also have the benefit of easing pressure on our hospitals”, Deputy Browne added. “Planning preparations are ongoing at the moment but no definite location in the town has been agreed. I will continue to work on this matter to ensure that the new primary care centre is a state of the art medical centre for all in the Enniscorthy area”, Deputy Browne concluded. n

Irish Wheelchair Association: ‘Back in 5’ ! Wheelchairs on Wexford Quay as part of the "Back in 5 Campaign" by the Irish Wheelchair Association, Ballycanew Branch, Gorey. Picture shows Chairman of Wexford Co. Council, Keith Doyle, and James Browne TD, with, in front, Councillors Davy Hynes and Lisa McDonald, as well as members of Wexford Garda Unit and members of the Wheelchair Association.

The irish Wheelchair association (iWa) Wexford got into gear for its ‘back in 5’ campaign by taking to the streets of Wexford town on 9th September. There are currently almost 75,000 Disabled Drivers Parking Permits in circulation in Ireland. The availability of wheelchair-accessible parking spaces is an essential lifeline for motorists with disabilities. Unfortunately, far too often these spaces are occupied by able-bodied drivers and this issue has become a significant problem in Wexford. Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) launched the ‘Back in 5’ Campaign which aims to highlight the significant impact parking in an accessible space can have on

a person with a disability even it is just for ‘5 minutes’. With the increased volume of traffic throughout Wexford town, an unfortunate consequence has been an upsurge in motorists illegally parking in disabled parking bays. Accessible parking spots are very important to people with disabilities due to their size and access to amenities and facilities. People with disabilities and their families joined IWA and Wexford County Council to roll-out the ‘Back in 5’ campaign in Wexford. Speaking at the Crescent on the Quay in Wexford town, IWA Service Coordinator Caroline Lacey explained: “ The name of IWA’s campaign originates from the

throw-away statement that people with disabilities hear on an all too regular basis when they confront a driver who has inadvertently parked in an accessible parking bay, “only running to the bank/shop, will be back in five minutes”. Accessible parking bays are located near amenities in order for people with disabilities to access work, education, post offices, shops, banks and social events. There is no excuse for using an accessible parking bay without a disability parking permit. IWA members have heard many different excuses and they want to highlight to all drivers throughout Co. Wexford that this is not acceptable”. The organisations involved

in the ‘Back in 5’ campaign are also reminding motorists that it is an offence to park in a disabled parking space without an official Disabled Drivers Parking Permit. The offence is dealt with by way of a fixed charge notice for €80, rising to €120 if not paid in the first 28 days. Alongside this, the misuse of an accessible parking bay can have a significant impact on a driver with a disability who genuinely needs to access the space. For further information about the range of services and supports IWA provides to people with physical disabilities in their own homes and communities please call 0539482522 or email wexford@iwa.ie or Selina.power@iwa.ie. n

Some €750,000 has been allocated recently in funding to assist the repair of regional and local roads in Wexford. That’s according to Minister Paul kehoe, who noted that the amount allocated to We x f o r d from the Department of Transport is among the highest in the country. Minister Kehoe said Wexford County Council has been actively engaged in road repair since Storm Emma hit earlier this year. “Many of the regional and local roads in Wexford have suffered significant damage as a result of severe weather events. Wexford County Council has been faced with damage caused by repeated severe weather incidents,” the Minister said. “I warmly welcome the additional funding support

of €750,000 to assist the council in progressing repairs to affected regional and local roads before year end. “Extreme weather events over the last year, such as Storm Eleanor, Storm Emma, flooding incidents and the summer drought have had a major impact on the regional and local road network. “These events combined with the extended period of reduced funding for road maintenance following the economic downturn have left the road network much more vulnerable to damage.” In addition, a €3m allocation is being provided to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to assist with winter operations and maintenance works on national roads. TII assists local authorities with maintenance funding for national roads. n

‘DIP IN THE NIP’ RAISES A WHOPPING €28,449 FOR HOPE CENTRE Enniscorthy’s Hope Cancer Support Centre recently received a cheque for almost €30,000, the proceeds of the fourth annual Dip in the Nip which took place in Rosslare Strand in August. Organised by Mayglass woman, Eileen Rowe, the event attracted over 350 women who bared all to enjoy an early morning swim in the sea. Eileen first started the Dip in 2014, shortly after losing a family member to cancer. ‘With that final figure, we’re looking at approximately €80,000 raised for the centre in four years so the aim for next year is to break the €100,000,’ according to Eileen. The fundraising goes towards the day-to-day running of the centre and the therapies it provides. The success of the event, Eileen said, was not something that others envisaged but she had always been confident that it would grow in popularity. For her, the event not only aims to raise funds for charity, but also to empower women.

At the foot of the hill… The West side of Enniscorthy is certainly seeing a major boost in commercial activity of late, particularly in the clonhaston area. In the last year or so George Kehoe’s hardware company opened a substantial outlet in Clonhaston very close to local businessman Padraic Donohoe’s relatively new business – Alcast Motor Factors. Closeby, Enniscorthy’s Gaelscoil will be joined by the new St Patrick’s Special School, the sod-turning on which took place just a week ago. Major plans are in place for the redevelopment of the Templeshannon area and several housing schemes are in the pipeline in particular a major development at Clonhaston which could eventually see up to 500 houses being built along with some commercial units. The latest addition to all this commercial endeavour is the recent opening of Hill

stranger to the motor industry, but this is a completely separate business from Mr Donohoes’s other motorrelated activity. Hill Autos is a car sales business with an extensive and growing range of cars for

Achieving success seminar an Achieving Success seminar was held in the Riverside Park hotel, Enniscorthy, on 18th october organised by David hasslacher, Life coach. This was a follow-on from his last seminar held last april. Some 270 students from colaiste bride, Meanscoil Gharman, colaiste abbain and St Mary’s cbS attended. The reason David organised this seminar was to give Transition Year students a firsthand opportunity to listen and learn from people who had been successful in their careers. The students were asked to make notes on what each speaker said, what they found helpful and what might be of assistance to them in their future careers. David emphasised the importance of goal setting, overcoming problems and honest hard work. Rachel Doyle, founder and CEO of the Arboretum Garden Centre in Leighlinbridge, spoke of how she and her husband began their business and that she had come from a poor background, beginning their garden

centre business from their garage as she always had a passion for flowers. Shortly afterwards they set up their first small garden centre on the outskirts of Carlow town and subsequently sold the site to Aldi and then moved to Leighlinbridge where they established the Arboretum. Their new location beside N9 helped their business to flourish, and attracted even more customers when they opened a coffee shop in the centre, the first in Ireland. Their garden centre business has grown and prospered to now include their recently purchased centre, near Kilcoole, North Wicklow. Because of her devotion and success in horticulture, Rachel has b e e n h o n o u re d b y b e i n g President of the World Congress of Garden Centres and has also been awarded with a Life Time Achievement award. Rachel went on to say how she frequently stepped outside her comfort zone which has been part of her success. Mick kehoe told the audience how he, as one of six, began

with the disability of dyslexia, struggled in school – it being an unheard-of condition then, but found an impetus with the help of good teachers and obtained a Diploma in Horticulture. Growing was his passion as he came from a farming background. After he met his future wife, Annis, they began a fruit and vegetable growing business in Crossabeg on 5 acres growing strawberries amongst other crops. Their big break came when he signed a contract with Fergal Quinn to supply his shops with fresh strawberries at £ 1,000 per ton as opposed to £ 150 per ton that he was getting for jam making. He now farms some 300 acres. He went on to encourage the students, telling them to never give up, work hard, and mix with the right people. Jurgita Dulkyte, who is Project Director of the service station company, Applegreen, told the audience how she had come to Ireland from Lithuania 14 years ago with a degree in electrical engineering. To put herself

and her brother through college her parents had sold their house and moved to a much cheaper one with no running water. She arrived in Ireland speaking almost no English. However, despite these handicaps, she joined Applegreen starting at the bottom by working at the Deli counter. From there she worked her way up in the company to become Manager at their Coynes Cross Service Station in Wicklow. She then transferred to become Project Director of the biggest branch on the Naas Road where she is very gainfully employed. Last to address the students was John Roche, retired Chief Superintendent. John explained how he had been born in Wexford town and had wanted to join the Garda Siochana from a very early age. However, because of a pronounced stammer, he found it extremely difficult as interviewing was a huge problem. Despite this, and after some help, he overcame this impediment and joined the force aged 19. He served in Dublin as a

Sergeant and completed his term of office in Wexford as Chief Superintendant. John impressed upon the students how he had impressed on all the Gardai serving under him the importance of respect, focus and hard work. To finish, David thanked the teachers, pupils and speakers

for coming and hoped that many of the students will have been helped in their future careers by listening to what the speakers had to relate. He has invited feedback from both the teachers and pupils and hopes to visit the schools in person to discuss this feedback face to face. n

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH AT 8:30 PM The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy

Enniscorthy’s Got Style Enniscorthy’s got style and has it in abundance if a recent fashion show at the Riverside Park Hotel is any indication. Some of the town’s best known and most loved fashion houses took to the catwalk all in the good cause of raising much needed funds for Oesophageal Cancer, a cause very dear to the heart of boutique owner and chief organiser Trish Rackard. Models from Glamour, Ottiva, Sofia’s Choice and of course Trish’s own store, Yellow Rose, strutted their stuff in the

warm, sultry, autumnal shades of burnt orange, forest green, mellow yellow, tawny ochre, rich russet, wine and auburn beautifully accentuated with splashes of vivid green, flaming red, lipstick pink and flambuoyant cobalt. The styles from the town’s boutiques were vibrant, easy wearing and eye catching following the current trend of adding cosy, colourful scarves to everything which are sure to heighten and brighten the hue of an Enniscorthy winter. Personally, I am a lover of

the scarf that can add structure, balance, flair and character to almost any outfit, coupled with warmth, camouflage and colour – a truly amazing, low-cost item that can totally revamp your wardrobe, so don’t be without one this season and the Enniscorthy boutiques have a cornucopia of choice. Footwear is extremely important this season with equal emphasis on comfort, panache and colour and Majella Wall’s winter collection at J’Adore on Weafer Street is getting the balance just about right with her on-trend styles designed for today’s Get Up & Go Woman. MC for the occasion, the indomitable Liam Sharkey, added his own particular brand of style to proceedings before calling on the lady herself, Trish Rackard, to say a few words. Enniscorthy film-makers Michael J and Donna Marie Sludds bring us an epic thriller on how far one would go for a loved one. Kidnapping, butchery and blood all in the name of love as Alex tries to undo mistakes from his past. Torn between what is right and wrong, Alex tries to follow his heart and deal with the consequences later. Although his heart might be in the right place, his mind goes beyond reason. Directed by: Donna Marie Sludds; DOP: Michael Benson; Written by: Michael Joseph Cloke; Original Score by: Ana Ortiz Wienken; Photo Credit: Michael Duggan. The movie will premiere on Monday 12th November 2018 at 7pm in The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, with a Red Carpet and Prosecco Reception. Over 18's only. Tickets €10 from The Presentation Centre. n

Drama workshop a success As part of its policy of discovering and developing new and existing actors, Enniscorthy Drama Group hosted a one-day workshop event on Saturday 20th October at the IFA Centre, Enniscorthy. Presented by two professional actors, the purpose of the free event was to encourage local actors to come along and participate in a series of work-

shops aimed at cultivating and enhancing stage presence and performance techniques. One of the main messages coming through on the day was the part memory plays in creating a good actor. And you might think that is stating the obvious but it isn't just about the ability to memorise and deliver words it’s the ability to remember the physicality of every-

thing and be able to portray an image to an audience without the use of words – almost like mime. A fascinating experience and hopefully a very worthwhile one for those who attended and perhaps the beginning of another new and exciting element for Enniscorthy Drama. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Christmas Festival fundraiser On 4th October I attended the annual fundraising Race Night at Enniscorthy Greyhound Track organised by Enniscorthy and District Chamber in aid of the town’s Christmas Festival. With nine races in total sponsored by Roban Financial & PE Kelly Insurances, Sherry Fitzgerald O’Leary Kinsella Auctioneers, AIB Bank, Doyle Fielding Chartered Accountants, J.C. Breen & Co .Ltd., Enniscorthy Guardian, Stamp’s Bar, The Antique Tavern, Byrne’s Books

& Toys, Smyth’s Homevalue and Treacy’s Hotel, and all dogs nominated, not to mention all the tickets sold and the onsite raffle, it was yet another successful venture which will add magic, light and sparkle to our streets this festive season. And what a fantastic night’s entertainment it was for €15, great racing, delicious food courtesy of the Holy Grail, oodles of excitement and lively company. A night at the dogs is a new and different experience for many

and perhaps we should be selling it better to those visiting our town. At the event I sat beside German visitors from a small town outside Heidelberg who had never before seen dogs racing and found it fascinating. It seems that there is no such thing in Germany, horses yes – dogs no – so maybe our Greyhound Track is an unique selling feature that we should be marketing and promoting better as another tourist attraction of the town. – Maria Nolan

ARE YOU Welcome back again to all the news and views regarding the social dancing scene in the South East, here in the November edition of the Slaney News. You'd imagine things would be quietening down now with the temperatures hitting zero and the clock gone back, but that’s not how it works with social dancers. As you will read below, with the parish dances and regular dance venues, it's business as usual. And for a growing number of people it’s a dancing holiday in the sun with so many to choose from. They feature all the familiar Irish country artists in either Spain or Portugal and are mostly all inclusive for about the €1,000 mark. Some of our lot went this year and said they'd never go on any other type of holiday again it was such a good experience. So needless to say I'm booked in for next year and just be warned, if it’s something you are thinking of doing, they book out very quickly. It's mad really when you think of it. You step onto a plane here leaving your long johns and hot water bottle behind, and step off the other end in shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of sunglasses. Not all that long ago if our grandparents were doing that same journey, the chances were, that they'd never make it back. Nowadays people

He contributes a regular music and dance column to the Slaney News.

would be wondering where you got the great colour from!! But for those who prefer to stay closer to home there is lots on this month. Paddy O'Brien has his regular weekend in the Clayton Whites Hotel Wexford featuring big names such as Michael English (Fri 16th) Declan Nerney (Sat 17th), Patrick Feeney (Sun 17th) and local band Tony, Theresa & The Stars. The Woodford Dolmen, Carlow, has a country weekend on the same dates with Robert Mizzell, Gerry Guthrie, Dominic & Barry Kirwin to name just a few. The Rhu Glenn, Waterford, has Michael English Sat 3rd and Derek Ryan Sat 24th. The Springhill Court, Kilkenny, meanwhile have their country weekend from Fri 9thSun 11th with Mike Denver as just one of the many big names appearing. Three years ago this month, Askamore Community Hall started up a social dance night on

the 1st Friday of every month. Like so many other parish halls we have featured here in the Slaney News it needed some updating, repairing and replacing. Built in 1951 it served as the local school until the mid 60's until it was amalgamated with Ballyellis School, thus leaving the original building as a meeting room for the next number of years. School busses were now being introduced by C.I.E. so walking to school was fast disappearing, as were the many little 2-room schools where an open fire was the only source of heating, no flushing toilets and you filled your nib pen from the inkwell in your desk. So it was until in the mid 70's when a number (too many to mention here) of parishioners decided to build a community hall adjoining the old school. With Eamon O'Neill (RIP), Paddy Doran (RIP) and Pat Tomkins as trustees, lots of local help from the likes of Tom Buttle and a very innovative priest known fondly as Fr "Gadget" Gahan who along with the exper-

tise of Bobby Naylor added a feature to the hall that is probably the only one of its kind in existence, and took the vision and a brain of an engineer to even attempt to actually construct it. Read on! In 1980 the new hall opened. Funded totally by the parish and by volunteers who sowed, picked and sold potatoes in donated fields as just one of the many ways to raise money. It had a badminton court, and thanks to Fr. Gahan, a squash court which, with the push of a button, raises up to form a stage! This is something you would expect see at the London Palladium. Not in a parish hall half way between Bunclody and Gorey. No hydraulics were used as that would have been fiercely expensive, but instead 4 screw jacks operated by electric motors. Who'd haver ever thought it was possible? It also has a licensed bar which would be very unusual for a parish hall, but in the period of time when social dancing all but disappeared this proved a vital lifeline to the hall being a popular venue for 21st's and other parties. Getting back to the present day, the monthly dance is now one of the most popular in the south east. This is without doubt a testament to the committee who have given so much unpaid hours to making it such a success. Freshly made sandwiches and home cooked bread, tarts and buns are served in what was the old school, and all part and parcel of the dance night. If you're not driving and fancy a drink, it’s all there. Great atmosphere, great live bands and a moving stage!! where would you get it? But come early if you want a seat. Here are the regular dance venues in and around the south east. Fri 2nd November; Askamore

what product you use ‘, Joan said, ‘as long as you continue to cleanse until the cleansing pad shows clear ‘. Using mainly Clarins and Lancome products which Joan said contain anti-pollutants and built-in sunscreen, she gave one very willing volunteer, Tracy, a mini facial using both a Clarins Peel Mask and one that can be left to soak into the skin, and applied a beautifully delicate makeup to a very young and excited volunteer, Jade Mernagh, carefully watched by her mam who quipped, ‘If she’s going to look that good with makeup I will have to be very vigilant in the next couple of years.’ Interesting and changing times as our Library continues to become a focal point for a variety of activity in the community. – Maria Nolan

A beautiful film screening in Enniscorthy A beautiful documentary called The Silver Branch, which was nominated for an IFTA earlier this year, was recently given a 5 star review in The Sunday Independent (the latest in a series of fab reviews), and has just won yet another award this time at the Innsbruck Nature Film Festival, will receive a rare public screening in Enniscorthy’s beautiful Presentation Centre on 24th November, thanks to local woman Sue Kavanagh who has organised the screening event. The multi-award-winning film is directed by Katrina Costello, who says, “I left Ireland in my teens and for 20 odd years I worked in the financial cities across the globe, when I returned and sat a while in the mountains of the Burren, I realised that my connection to landscape and farming was never far away and I wanted to reconnect people to that incredible love that rural people have for their land and their animals.” The Silver Branch depicts the life and insights of the inimitable philosopher, poet, and fifth-generation farmer, Patrick McCormack, owner of ‘Fr Ted’s House’ in the beautiful, austere Burren, in the west of Ireland. Through Patrick’s eyes and

GREEN ROAD. Music. 9 Nov. Join Green Road for a night of foot-tapping music and sing along to old favourites, the truly great songs of the Irish Folk Tradition.

pastoral verse, this beautifully shot film immerses us in the exquisite textures of the natural world, bringing us a rare glimpse of a disappearing way of life with all its richness and roguery, and leading to a deep connection with the Earth and our ancestral wild spirit. Patrick longs to farm at the quite pace his ascendants did, to be free and to live in harmony with the landscape: The landscape/nature itself is our heroine – beautiful, strong, wild, yet nurturing and all giving, but she needs protection from the cold front of capitalism and government sell-outs. Patrick is the perfect hero, a rugged Burren man with a vision and is willing to risk all. In this modern-day David and Goliath story, Patrick and his rural community are drawn

into a divisive battle, to prevent a tourist mecca from being constructed outside his front door, on the sacred mountain called Mullagh Mhór. He forms the Burren Action Group of 7 plaintiffs who take on the might of the Irish government in the European courts to decide on the fate of this iconic wilderness. Though it is centred around this remarkable man and his search for ‘unity of being’, it explores more universal themes. It is a story of life, love, family, grief, of commitment and of the struggles of modern day life, which invites the viewer to follow in mindful meditation, to take a journey into the self and examine the relationship between man and landscape, between tradition and spirit, between body and soul.

In this bittersweet evocation of the end of an era, an Irish farmer/poet, deeply entwined with ancestral traditions and the natural world, must stand up for all that is sacred to him when the government threatens his way of life. Check out the trailer: http://www.seafeverproductions.com/portfolio/the-silver-branch-3/ The film is showing in Enniscorthy for one night only!! Saturday 24th November at 8.00pm. Kyle Cross chaos A public meeting was attended by a large crowd on 27th September at Kyle Forge, to discuss the new road layout at Kyle Cross and the resulting chaos experienced by local residents who are very concerned that a major accident will happen there sooner or later. Darren Kenny, who organised the meeting, says that he himself has had four or five near misses since the new layout came into being just a few months ago and with no hard shoulders or slipways for anyone turning for Crossabeg or Killurin, the junction is “waiting for an accident to happen”. Mr Kenny says a number of options should be considered e.g. roundabout, islands, traffic lights, a reduced speed limit of 60km, etc. He has brought the residents’ concerns to Wexford County Council and the National Roads Authority but to date no progress has been made. n

Local business people and visiting Rates Valuation Office officials at Enniscorthy & District Chamber offices on 10th October.

the rates Valuation Office will engage in a planned revaluation of all commercial properties across County Wexford in 2019. this exercise is expected to get under way early next year and be completed within the calendar year. Enniscorthy & District Chamber extended an invitation to officials from the Rates Valuation Office to come to Enniscorthy to explain the process and methodology to be employed in the revaluation process. The office accepted the invitation and so two senior officials, Mr. David Lavelle, Head of Valuation Services, and Mr. John O’Sullivan, Commissioner of Valuations, attended a meeting in the Chamber Offices on October 10th to explain in detail what is involved. Both officials gave a broad outline of the revaluation plans before taking questions from the floor. n

Essentially the revaluation will be based on Net Annual Value (NAV) which reflects the Rental Value, not Capital Value, of each premises. Under this revaluation many properties will see their rates lowered. A look at the accompanying table, displaying the outcomes for several nearby counties, shows the majority of businesses actu-

ally end up paying less rates. The expected timescale in Enniscorthy is: March 2019: Proposed Valuation Certificates will issue. Walk In Clinics will be held. 17th September 2019: Valuation List will be published. Walk In Clinics will be held. January 2020: Effective for rates purposes. n

Recently we had a case presented to our Hospital of a dog which the owner said had a tummy which seemed to be rattling with water!! It was a strange observation but true to form this particular owner is very astute and observant and was 100% right. The dog had developed what’s termed a GDV Gastric Volvulus, or in layman terms – a twisted stomach. It’s not a very common occurrence and is usually seen in Giant Breeds just after feeding. The stomach can twist over on itself 180 or even up to 360 degrees. There's one thing for sure – it’s a medical emergency and surgery is almost always the only option. The big risk for these patients is going into shock and getting fluids into them is paramount. So Marcel, our resident surgeon, gave the dog a general anaesthetic and x-rayed him to confirm, and ordinarily we would set up a drip in one leg but in these cases we set up two drips and get them running almost full tilt while we operate, to counteract shock. We prepped for surgery and operated immediately and sure enough our worst fears were confirmed. The stomach was so distended that it was like a barrel. We drained the fluid, emptied the stomach and repaired the damage to the stomach wall and then got stitching up as quick as possible. This is the critical time, once the repair is done but the body is still often in shock. We had him in recovery mode off all anaesthetics but still on the drip but his temperature was critically low at 33.1C (it should be about 38C). We kept working on him and at one point his temperature went down to 32.9C. Along with all the medical treatments we used heat lamps, hot-water bottles, duvets.... herbal & flower essences (similar to rescue remedy) and slowly he started to stabilise and went into a deep sleep. Once he had stabilised we were happy enough and handed it over to the Man Above... Within a few short hours the dog was sitting up and when we took him out for a walk he pulled me around the car park... He was back and full of beans!! We checked him every day for a few days and he was back for his stitches out during the week and all is well. Thanks to his vigilant owner and the prompt action of the team and the help from the Man Above we got the perfect result. That makes it all worthwhile. n

WEXFORD SCIENCE WEEK

WexSci, the Wexford Science Festival, will run from 11th to 18th november 2018, promoting science, technology, engineering, and maths (SteM). The Festival is led by Wexford County Council in partnership with I.T. Carlow, WIT, Waterford Wexford ETB, EPA, BIM and funded by SFI. A week-long innovative festival is promised, with many events, in libraries, community and family resource centres, in schools and colleges and for the Science Showcase at The Street, Wexford County Council, Carricklawn, Wexford. Events will be fun and engaging, there will be something to interest people of all ages and knowledge. Wexford has been identified by research from SFI as a low intervention county in terms of STEM participation. With this in mind, the organisers have developed a festival programme to stimulate interest and debate about Former Wexford County Council Manager Mr. Eddie Breen and his wife, Pauline, are pictured with Diocesan Secretary for Ferns, Fr. John Carroll and Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, at the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem on 17th October. All three were part of the national annual Irish Catholic newspaper Christian solidarity pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The group was invited to a meeting at the Patriarchate in Jerusalem where the blessings, challenges and difficulties of Christians (who now form only 2% of the population) were outlined. The 8-day trip also included a visit through the Golan Heights and to the borders with Lebanon and Syria. n

STEM. The aim at WexSci is to encourage people to engage with science in a fun and interactive way. The organisers want to talk to the amateur and the professional, the curious and all wishing to follow a career in science. They hope to engage and inspire people of all ages, and to promote awareness and understanding of the importance and relevance of STEM to everyday life. Young people and adults are invited to take part in the events across Co. Wexford each day during the festival with some of the best national and international scientists and researchers who will demonstrate and discuss a broad range of subjects, from humanology to climate change and meteorology, from code breaking to astronomy, from the transforming qualities of milk to neuroscience. There are opportunities all week for one to experience STEM in a hands-on way, to learn how

to be a laboratory technician, engineer, sports scientist, marine biologist, agronomist, immunologist, environmentalist, computer scientist, energy conservator and much more. The highlight of the week is the STEM Showcase, an open day for all on Saturday 17th November from 10.45am to 4pm. Everyone is invited to visit the shows and explore the many science stands and interactive demonstrations in the WexSci Science Showcase at Wexford County Council, Carricklawn, Wexford. There is something for everyone at WexSci, so do take part, and bring your family and friends. For more information contact: Hazel Percival, Senior Executive Librarian, Wexford County Council, Co. A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond morgan dunne Enniscorthy recently lost one of its strongest voices in the death of Morgan Dunne of the Shannon. Morgan was involved in the public life of Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford for over 60 years. As a member of the Enniscorthy Urban District Council and its Chairman on a number of occasions he promoted the town and surrounding area tirelessly regardless of any obstacles put in his way. He was a great believer in the youth of the town and through more than fifty years involvement with the Co. Wexford V.E.C., now the Co. Wexford Education and Training Board (he was first appointed in 1967), promoted many programmes from which generations of young people benefited. Much of his work went unseen as it was in the background and Morgan never sought publicity for his efforts. Back in 1961 in the General Election for the 17th Dail, Morgan stood unsuccessfully as a Sinn Fein candidate. In more recent years he engaged politically as an Independent. He represented Enniscorthy at home and abroad with pride and dignity and always put his town first and foremost. That was the only agenda Morgan had and he will be sadly missed by his family and all those who crossed his path as he made his

way through life over the past 90 years. comPo culTure This country must be the compo capital of the world. The amount of money handed out by our courts through awards and settlements in astronomical. No other country in the world is as generous with payouts in genuine cases, much less some of the peculiar claims we see in Ireland from time to time. The laws of libel and defamation prevent me from highlighting particular cases but we don’t have to dig too deep to find them. The tragedy of all this is that the rest of us, who take out house insurance, employers’ and public liability cover or motor insurance, are paying for all of this. Various governments over the years have railed against this culture but seem unable to restrict the size of the awards. It is incredible that in Ireland the average soft tissue injury can pull in up to €18,000 while the same injury in Britain nets €4,000. Third party injury costs are approximately €40,000 to €60,000 in Ireland while in the U.K. we are talking €15,000 maximum. There is also the question of the legal costs surrounding these claims. Naturally the higher the award the higher the commission-based costs. Therefore, there is no incentive whatever to

points, to make them safer drivers. Just think how you would feel if a driver, who you had assisted in avoiding such a penalty and learning a lesson, was to go on recklessly and sweep someone, maybe a member of your family, off the road further on. Bear that in mind before you indicate to approaching speedsters that they are about to be detected. Make the roads safer rather than more dangerous.

Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill put any kind of cap on what is a just award and what is an achievable award. This entire scene should be opened up and investigated and strong legislation introduced to eradicate the robbery of decent insurance premium payers. driving on rural roads It always fascinates me to see how many drivers misuse rural roads. They drive at speeds totally unsuitable for the condition of the road and for some idiotic reason drive in the centre of the road. They never think that maybe, yes by a slim chance, there might be another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. They just plough on regardless of bends or the pos-

sibility of a large agricultural vehicle emerging from a field, or indeed the chance of escaped livestock, which in fairness is rare. How more accidents aren’t happening I don’t know. Perhaps it would help if from time to time the speed vans parked up on these roads. A few penalty points concentrate the minds very quickly. And on the issue of speed vans, a horrific practice is this silly habit of flashing lights to warn oncoming motorists that a van is in the vicinity. Drivers should bear in mind that the vehicle thundering towards you and the speed van around the corner, may be controlled by a driver who needs a wakeup call, by way of penalty

The Farmers and Bam As this column is being written the Wexford Branch of the I.F.A. and their members along the route of the Enniscorthy Bypass are in dispute with the main contractors BAM. Hopefully by the time you read this the problems will be sorted out and things will be back to normal. Any delay in the work on this major project is to be regretted but there are times when people must take a stand against what they see as injustice or unfairness. And no better people than the farmers. They will stick together, support each other, and not walk away until a solution is found. Large companies like BAM should realise that I.F.A. in Ireland is highly respected and recognised by government and all state agencies as representing the majority of our farmers. It would appear

hugely arrogant of them then to refuse to talk to I.F.A. as the farmers’ representatives as reported by national and local media. The farmers along the route of this much needed road have suffered terribly with the dissecting of their farms, perfectly good and productive land buried under a road, and the general inconvenience and disruption to their way of life and livelihoods. The least that BAM can do is meet the people’s representatives and immediately solve the problems which have arisen and be available to work with the I.F.A. on any future difficulties which may arise. The Presidency So, Michael D. is back in the Aras for another seven years. The aspect of this campaign which struck me was to confirm my view, as articulated in a previous column, that we do not require this office. The yarns about the expense of it, if only half true, are enough to turn people off. We’ve had a number of referenda on various issues over the years and now I think that within the next seven years we should have one with the question, “To abolish the office of Uachtaran na hEireann”. Yes or No. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

EQUALITY FOR WOMEN…

minister for culture, heritage and the gaeltacht, Josepha madigan, announced €1m in capital funding for the national opera house, Wexford, ahead of officially opening the 67th Wexford Festival opera which runs to 4th november. Speaking prior to the offic i a l o p e n i n g c e re m o n y,

Minister Madigan said, “I am conscious that we are celebrating this year, the 10th Anniversary of the opening of this magnificent Opera House. And while this auditorium looks as good as the day on which it opened, we all aware that every house requires continued investment to keep it in shape. So I am delighted

tonight to announce that my Dept will be investing €1m in necessary updating and refurbishment works over the next 3 years to protect the State’s significant investment in this building and to ensure that National Opera House continues to operate at the highest quality levels for many years to come.” n

GREENWAY… Wexford county council has received notice of the decision of an Bord Pleanala to refuse permission for the proposed pedestrian and cycling greenway between Wexford and curracloe. The proposed facility consists of 10.7km of a shared cycling and walking greenway and a further 4.9 km of local looped trails and would have linked the centre of Wexford Town with the popular amenity areas at Curracloe Beach and the Raven. It is one of four high-quality greenways proposed by Wexford County Council to be constructed over the next five years. An Bord Pleanala received a number of submissions on the proposal, some of which were in favour of the development and some of which objected to the development for various reasons. While discussions had been held with the National Parks & Wildlife Service during the design of the Greenway, their submission raised concerns about the impact of the

proposed development on the Raven Point Nature Reserve Special Area of Conservation and Wexford Harbour and Slobs Special Protection Area. In its refusal decision, An Bord Pleanala has cited these possible adverse effects of the proposed development, adding that the proposed Greenway “would be detrimental to the attractive and sensitive landscape and visual amenities of the area”. In its application the Council recognised and sought to protect the sensitive nature of the landscape in which this Greenway is to take place. Therefore Wexford Co. Council is very disappointed with the decision to refuse this development, despite the Board’s acceptance of the principle that the development of a Greenway in this location would enhance leisure and recreational facilities in the area. The Council will examine in detail the decision of An Bord Pleanala prior to determining its next course of action in relation to the project. n

Ballindaggin development group is delighted to announce the date for the opening the village’s fantastic, new community park. This development has been

a huge community effort with lots of voluntary labour and plenty of donations from near and far. To see the finished article, keep Sunday 4th of November

free, after 11.30am Mass, and join in the celebrations at this beautiful amenity for young and old alike – a place for everyone in the local community to relax and enjoy. n

OVER €1.3m APPROVED FOR WEXFORD VILLAGES Twelve villages across co. Wexford are to benefit from over €1.3m for a wide variety of community-led projects. The welcome news was announced on 5th october by minister for rural and community development, michael ring Td, when he gave details of grant allocations totalling more than €21 million to 224 towns and villages across ireland under the 2018 Town and village renewal scheme. The Wexford applications submitted under the Scheme were identified by their respec-

tive local community groups and businesses in conjunction with Wexford County Council. Approved projects include community, tourism, employment initiatives and other measures aimed to help make small towns and villages a more attractive and more sustainable places in which to live and work. Under the Scheme, the majority of funding is earmarked for towns and villages with a population of 5000 of less, with each County Council invited to submit up to 12 applications to the Department of Rural and

Community Development for consideration. All Wexford applications were successful with Co. Wexford receiving the highest proportion of funding nationally. Welcoming the announcement, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Keith Doyle paid tribute to all local community groups and associations across County Wexford and commended them on their continuing efforts to improve their local areas. CEO of Wexford County Council, Tom Enright also warmly welcomed the

announcement of funding for the Wexford applications and said the Council looks forward to supporting the 12 local communities in achieving their goals. The Community Department of Wexford County Council is already carrying out preparatory work on the 2019 Town and Village Scheme and looks forward to assisting many other communities throughout the County with the development of more exciting and innovative project applications. HONDA CIVIC SEDAN many honda enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that a saloon version of honda’s well-known compact car has now arrived in ireland. Based on the tenth generation of the civic that launched in ireland in 2017, the civic sedan, as it is officially known, goes on sale here priced from €24,750. That’s just a €1000 premium over the equivalent hatchback and the four door Civic Sedan is arguably a ‘grander’ alternative to the Civic Hatchback, with more physical presence from that carefully designed elongated rear end. In fact, the size and shape of this vehicle surely makes it a worthy successor to the Accord, which is no longer sold here but retains a loyal legion of fans. Thankfully, the Civic’s

fantastic recipe of quality, refinement and driving fun has not been diluted in the saloon version. When you sit into the Civic you are met with the same mature looking dashboard design. From the driver’s seat, the Civic gives the impression of being behind the wheel of a larger machine. It’s very spacious in the rear with two large footwells and the boot in the saloon comes in at 519 litres, which is 41 litres more than the Civic Hatchback. In Ireland the Civic Sedan comes in three trims: Smart, Smart Plus and Premium. The Honda Sensing suite of safety equipment comes as standard including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition. The popular Smart

From 10am to 5pm each day, members of the public can avail of test drives and see new Audi technologies in action, with the Audi Wexford team on site to answer any questions about the range.

Plus model (from €27,250) gets features such as 17” alloys, Honda Connect with 7” touchscreen, rear parking camera, parking sensors, dual zone air conditioning, and leather steering wheel. The Premium model on test (from €31,150) had a blind spot monitor, keyless entry and start, full leather interior, heated front seats, sunroof and premium audio system with 10 speakers. The Honda Civic Sedan is available in Ireland with a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine with 126hp or the 1.6-litre diesel with 120hp. A six speed manual gearbox comes as standard, while there is also the option of an automatic gearbox. My test car was the 1.6-litre diesel and it is a very efficient unit with motor tax of just €180 per year and my fuel consumption over a week of driving was 5.2 litres. The diesel engine also happens to suit the Civic Sedan very well. There’s loads of flexibility and power and the engine is refined and never gets too raucous. The ride and handling of this generation of the Civic is superb, with the car being both comfortable and fun to drive. The steering is direct and nicely weighted and the Civic goes around corners with aplomb. The Honda Civic Sedan, especially in diesel form, is very easy to recommend. The quality, space and refinement of the Civic Sedan is excellent and in Sedan form the Civic offers a lot of style and the presence of a larger car. The Honda Civic is still one of the best cars launched in Ireland in the last 18 months!

Unveiling of plaque in Clohamon on 13th october enniscorthy historical re-enactment society was delighted to be part of the unveiling of a plaque at the village Pub in clohamon in memory of one of the remarkable women of the 1798 rebellion – caitlin Kathleen doyle. Councillor Johnny Mythen spoke eloquently of the brave Clohamon woman who lost her home and her family to the savagery of Yeoman Captain Jocelyn who hanged her father and brother and burnt her homestead at Clohamon with her mother and siblings inside. Kathleen managed to escape and subsequently joined the United Irishmen, fighting in several battles all the while seeking revenge on the treacherous Captain Jocelyn, eventually catching up with him at the Battle of Ross on 5th June 1798 where both of them lost their lives. The simple, poignant ceremony concluded with a powerful rendition of Boolavogue by the talented Ger Sheehan. Well done to the local community for honouring the memory of this very courageous Clohamon and Wexford woman who ‘dressed in man’s attire and fought for liberty’. Words and Pics: Maria Nolan

eNNisCorthy DrAMA enniscorthy drama group’s first venture into Pub Theatre will be an original play written and directed by Tom reddy. Well, Anything Quare?, will be performed this november (see details below). It’s a full-length comedy play in three acts and it has been written especially for the Pub and will be staged in four well known pubs around Enniscorthy using each pub venue as the set – Doyle’s Bar, Donohoe’s, the IFA Centre and Holohan’s Pub. Among the cast are EDG regulars Fintan Kelly, Brendan Robinson, Fergal Kelly, Joe Doyle with newcomers to the group including both Niall and Sandra Holohan making their debuts, as well as Madeline Breen, Karen Franklin, Dervla Murphy, Aisling Williams and Pat Murphy. It’s a strong cast (including three publicans!) with a mixture of old and new faces and they will be coming to a pub near you very soon.

The play is set in a rural public house in County Wexford and will use local public houses as the set for the performances. Set in August of this year in the lead up to the Pope’s visit, it addresses many issues of today in a humorous way. It contains adult humour throughout and is a ticket-only event. Tickets can be purchased from each of the 4 venues for €10 and are limited. The play will have 2 intervals between Acts, during which drinks can be purchased and then consumed during the following act. This promises to be an hilarious night out in your local pub. Tickets are limited for each venue so get yours quickly to avoid disappointment . The emphasis in this play is on Craic, and it is hoped to provide some serious craic each night. International boxing at Bellefield at the beginning of october Bellefield gaa deviated from its normal weekend activities of matches and nurseries as it became the venue for ireland vs Wales international Boxing Tournament in recognition of the valuable contribution of enniscorthy boxing stalwart, the late Bernard dunne. The event hosted by Sacre Coeur Boxing Club was a huge attraction drawing a large crowd in support of local boxers Nathan Brooks, Nathan Tyrrell, Logan Whelan and Jake Cox performing to the highest standards in this 11 to 17-year-old international competition and in memory of a man who put Enniscorthy on the international boxing map. During the interval, Ring Master supreme Fintan Kelly called Bernard’s family to the ring where they were joined by renowned Enniscorthy boxers Jim Sullivan, Gussie Farrell

Carmel launches 7th novel

All set for Wexford Literary Fest

local and irish times Best selling author carmel harrington goes from strength to strength launching her 7th novel A thousand roads home on saturday 20th october at the exquisite gaslamp gallery, gorey. Owner of Gaslamp Gallery, Claire O’Connell, pulled out all the stops for Carmel laying down the red carpet and adding Tom’s Bench and the lamp from A Thousand Roads Home to the gallery decor, and a cake was baked in Carmel’s honour, an exact replica of the book. Author and friend Catherine Ryan Howard came complete with props and many amusing stories about her friendship with Carmel and their association with gin, netflix and tissues, and was effusive in her praise of A Thousand Roads Home calling it Carmel’s best work to date. ‘As human beings’, Catherine said, ‘we are wired to react to personal stories rather than statistics and when you read Carmel’s warm hug of a novel you feel homelessness way beyond the statistics and the

figures.’ There was also a message from Carmel’s other partner on the G&T brigade, historical fiction author Hazel Gaynor, who couldn’t be present due to research in Monaco for her next book. What a tough life these writers have. Hazel said that A Thousand Roads Home ‘is a beautiful and important book, a wonderful read, raising awareness of an issue that is affecting so many people in Ireland at the present time’. She told Carmel to be very proud of all she has achieved to date and be very excited

about all that is to come. Carmel thanked family and friends for attending, the Gaslamp Gallery for the magnificent reception, Catherine Ryan Howard for the marvellous introduction and the appropriate props and said that A Thousand Roads Home is all about having a safe place to fall. ‘Not everyone is as lucky as I am, having a place to go when things go askew, not everyone has a safe place to fall. A Thousand Roads Home is about finding that place and finding your tribe, finding unlikely heroes and eventually finding yourself. ‘

ROSETTI’S WOMBAT Earlier in October I had the immense pleasure of being present at Enniscorthy Library for the launch of Joe Neal’s sixth volume of poetry, interestingly called Rosetti’s Wombat. And a pleasure indeed it was, as I have said on many occasions there is nothing quite like hearing Joe Neal read from his own work, with his theatrical background and musical Welsh accent it is always more than a reading, it is a performance, and last night was no exception. Award-winning poet, actor, broadcaster, journalist and author, Joe has just returned from an Arts Bursary trip to New England and began by giving an insight into his work. ‘Poetry’, Joe says, ‘is tuned thoughts. An idea drifts into

the mind, grabs your attention and chases after words putting them into a kind of melody’. `’Rhythm’, he went on, ‘is the driving force for me and when writing poetry I speak the words aloud to hear the melody’. ‘It’s a way of telling a story and as an uncle of mine used to say – If you must tell a story, tell it at a slant’. Last year Joe Neal was the – Maria Nolan winner of the Anthony Cronin Poetry Award at the Wexford Literary Festival and Joe explained how he had come across an abandoned wood cabin while treking through the mountains of West Virginia. ‘The cabin was surrounded by trees, with a waterfall close by. In front of the cabin there was a block of wood with a rusted axe

stuck in it and an old wheelchair that looked homemade. I sat there for hours wondering about the person who’d lived there and the name Bartle John came to me in a dream and I wrote the poem Allegheny Man which won the Award. Joe went on to tell the story of each of the poems he read and there was one I particularly liked about an uncle of his, James Muncaster Lovett, who went to Australia from a mountain in North Wales to farm sheep but WW1 broke out and he joined up and was killed at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. Into the Gully is a moving poem especially poignant as we approach the 100th anniversary of the end of that war to end wars. Rosetti`s Wombat is a trea-

of Wexford, cllr Tony dempsey, on 6th september. This exciting new space for artists and creatives located in the heart of Wexford town, in the old Cornmarket Shopping Mall, is now the new home to over 25 artists and craft makers as well as young musicians from the local FDYS youth music programme. Spearheaded by Wexford County Council, and supported by Wexford Arts Centre, this new hub comprises approx. 8,000 sq ft and provides much needed space at a subsidised cost for artists from the county’s thriving creative sector. The initiative is a direct response by the Council to artists’ needs as iden-

tified in the county’s recent arts plan Advancing the Arts launched earlier this year. Following its recent purchase by local businessman, Eamonn Buttle, the once-derelict shopping mall has been painstakingly renovated, opening its doors for the first time in many years during last year’s Opera Festival as a highly popular exhibition space. All spaces are currently fully booked with residents having signed a one-year lease. A further call out for applications is expected to take place in 2019. For further enquiries please contact Wexford Arts Office 053 9196369 or Wexford Arts Centre 053 9123764. n

Celebrating ten years of excellence… on the 5th september 2008, the first artists stepped out onto the stage at the new Wexford opera house – a new home for not just opera in ireland, but also for a variety of other performance artforms. Through the doors of its modest façade, almost hidden from view as you walked along High Street, Wexford, was Ireland’s first custombuilt, multi-purpose opera

house, situated on the footprint of the old Theatre Royal which had been the home to Wexford Festival Opera for over 50 years. Now it had a new home and over the next ten years artists from across all music and performing genres would find a home there too. It has been called ‘the best small opera house in the world’ by Hugh Canning on BBC Radio 3. The stunning design

by Keith Williams has won international acclaim and stands out as unique. But rather than looking back, the team are looking forward to the coming year of music and theatrical thrills; forward to the next ten years, as more and more local and national audiences continue to experience and explore this national treasure; forward to the next generation and the generations after that who
