Plans are now finalised for Enniscorthy’s St Patrick’s Day Parade which will be held on Tuesday, 17th March, starting at 3pm. The route will be the same as last year. See pages 10 and 15 inside for full details. The Parade Committee, at a recent meeting, decided to initiate the ceremonial office of Grand Marshal and it was decided to select Seán Doyle as the Grand Marshal for 2020, in recognition of his contribution to the civic, social and cultural life of Enniscorthy over many years. In another major change this year, there will be a theme for the Parade – Climate Change/Global Warming. The Enniscorthy Parade is a wonderful opportunity for young and old to share their concerns about climate in a creative way. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, in association with the Cottage Autism Network, is delighted to introduce a “Sensory Inclusion Street” for the 2020 Parade. The Sensory Street will be on Templeshannon Quay between the

comment At the time of going to press there has been no sighting of Bernard “Bunny” Kirwan since the 52-year-old went missing in Enniscorthy in the early hours of Sunday morning, 16th February. He is described as 6’2” with very short grey hair and with tattoos on both arms – ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ on one, and a dagger and snake on the other. If any of our readers has any information, no matter how trivial it may appear, please contact Enniscorthy Garda Station immediately on 0539242580, or ring 999, or 112, or any Garda station. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr Kirwan’s family at this difficult time. 2 March 2020 GENERAL ELECTION The General Election has come and gone (for the moment anyway) and we now have our five TDs for the 33rd Dáil. The winner here was no doubt Johnny Mythen who literally came back from the political graveyard to head the poll with the highest first preference vote ever achieved in this constituency. The Sinn Féin brand certainly was a bestseller this time throughout the entire country with the electorate voting for the alternative to Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil in their thousands. The Labour Party remains a mere spectator to the unfolding events having lost one seat and now holding only six in the 160 member Dáil. Its leader Brendan Howlin, who was successful in being re-elected in Wexford and will remain a TD, has resigned and the members of the party will spend the next number of months selecting a replacement. This will distract them from any business of the Dáil for that period of time.
Getting back to our own election, it has to be said that while Johnny Mythen was the clear winner, credit has to be given to Paul Kehoe who once again defied the odds and returned to Leinster House. This is to Enniscorthy’s advantage as this area now has three TDs in Mythen, Browne and Kehoe. While we understand that they represent the entire county, it certainly is no harm to have a concentration of national representatives in our area. The other successful candidate was of course Verona Murphy who must really garner satisfaction from the fact that she took a seat from her former party, Fine Gael. Fianna Fáil must be disappointed that they only achieved one seat from four candidates. Their policy of running four candidates didn’t help but the biggest problem which afflicts Fianna Fáil is the fact that their sitting TD, James Browne, takes so many votes from districts outside of Enniscorthy. By so doing (for

instance Browne took 1,900 votes out of Gorey this time which truly scuppered Malcolm Byrne) any Fianna Fáil candidate in an area outside of Enniscorthy has little chance of being elected. Unless proper vote and candidate management is put into place, that party will have no more than one TD in Wexford for the foreseeable future. The bigger question has to be as to whether we will see a government formed or not.
Nobody wants to play with anybody at the moment but let’s hope that the future of the country will be paramount in any negotiations which will take place. The public are bystanders in all of this and all we can do is wait and see. CORONAVIRUS The next big challenge to face our already overstretched health services is the Coronavirus. here, we experienced the usual hysterical reaction from the tabloids and social media. The bottom line is that, as there is no preventative vaccine, this virus is going to affect a lot of people here now that it has arrived. We must be sensible about this and don’t panic as apparently the effect on most people is not that severe, take the advice given by the authorities and avoid, where possible, direct contact with anyone who themselves may have been in contact with an area or individual where the virus may be in existence. Also, glad to see that our clergy has suspended the habit of “showing each other the sign of peace” during Mass as they did during the swine flu epidemic of a few years ago. Commonsense is prevailing. Any observations or comments on this column feel free to email: viewcolumn@gmail.com The event is free of charge and a great way to meet other Irish and wannabe Irish speakers. Over the coming months it is planned to include presentations on folklore, music sessions and storytelling. For more details: 053-9234699. n

Welcome boost for Old Dublin Road enniscorthy and district chamber is working closely with industries located in Kilcannon business park and on the old dublin road, enniscorthy. A steering committee was established for the area prior to christmas and, at the request of the chamber, Wexford county council’s chief executive, tom enright, has met with the committee and agreed to have a new development plan for the area drawn up. A team of consultants is being appointed by the
County Council to undertake this important work and it is expected that a new and comprehensive plan for the general Old Dublin Road area will be ready by late spring or early summer. Meanwhile, Enniscorthy Municipal District Manager, Ger Mackey, has also met with the Steering Committee and has agreed to implement a series of measures which will improve the overall appearance of the area. Sweeping of the Old Dublin Road is now being
done on a weekly basis and all gullies and shores have been emptied of debris. This will help prevent rain water stagnation and the possibility of pedestrians being splashed by passing motorists. Also, the introduction of a local bus link to and from the area at regular intervals during the day and working week is being examined and the hope is that this service will become a reality if enough support for it is forthcoming from the people working in that area. n

the national Adult literacy Agency (nAlA) recently launched ‘take the first step’, a national public information campaign to encourage those who have difficulties with numeracy and literacy to contact nAlA or their local etb (education & training board) to get the help they need to improve their skills. Taking the first steps on any difficult journey requires courage and commitment – and for those who have difficulties with reading, writing, maths or technology, the stigma attached can prove daunting and discouraging. Wexford General Hospital launches Medication Safety Campaign “help us to help you” Wexford General Hospital (WGH) has launched a campaign to increase awareness of medication safety among the public who use WGH’s services. As part of this, all members of the public are encouraged to carry a complete list of their medications at all times, preferably using the My Medicines List template below. The HSE’s Know, check, Ask campaign is designed to help improve the safe use of medicines by members of the public. It will help people who take medicines and everyone involved in their care to make better decisions about their treatment. The campaign aims to empower patients and encourages people who take regular medicines, and those assisting them to: Know your medicines and keep a list, bringing it to appointments and if admitted to hospital. check that you are using the right medicine the right way. Ask your healthcare professional if you are unsure. There is a ‘My Medicines List’ template available to download at www.safermeds.ie and is also available in pharmacies around the country. People can create their own list or ask their pharmacy or GP practice to print a list of medicines from their records. Some people find it useful to take a photo of their list and keep it on their phone.

TOWN TALK
WITH
KEITH DOYLE
METHINKS THE LADY DOTH PROTEST TOO MUCH What an election! Speaking with my scalder hat on, it’s great to see 3 TDs in Enniscorthy, it can only improve our chances of being heard and our needs being addressed. Here is a shopping list, fellows... ● Help build and fill the 8 units in t h e n e w Te c h P a r k a t Brownswood. ● Ensure there is a manned 24hour Cath Lab in Waterford to save lives in Co. Wexford. ● Bring our people home from Waterford to a proper, functional facility in Wexford for people with mental health problems. ● Continue to lobby for more activity in Rosslare port to bring it up to its potential.
Four requests, easy to remember, but four things that will change the quality of life for our people. I will park that for another time in order to discuss a more pressing subject – what is playing out on our screens nightly since the election. One can rightly say politics has changed forever in Ireland. Words like ‘seismic’ are being used and it’s true to say that a realignment, between centrist parties and the left, has taken place. This has been called for by the left for years but it didn't happen until now. Until now, the left hasn't excited the public. Why now and why Sinn Féin? The confidence and supply arrangement politically castrated FF who were seen as part of the
government. Sinn Féin was seen as the opposition party and took that role to the max, identified the core issues and went out to the public and engaged. They went into campus after campus at rallies and meetings showing their support for students’ issues. They went to the streets over the housing crisis. The message that they were listening and were the opposition has resonated with large swathes of people. Herein lies their problem. They are seen as a party of opposition. It didn't really matter to the public whether the figures stacked up or not as Sinn Féin, and a lot of people who voted for them, never imagined they would be on the cusp of entering government.

What the election gave us is three parties in the same ballpark so what happens next? We are going back to the country, people! Everything I have seen tells me it’s more likely an outcome than any stable arrangement that can last. Mary Lou knew within a few hours of the results that Sinn Féin had rocked the system but had fallen short. The mandate to try and form a government was there but the left alignment doesn't have the numbers and FF and FG were not going to hop into bed with her. It doesn't matter that no party has an entitlement to enter government. One has to be carved out with faith in each other for it to last. Mary Lou knows all this so the best way
to prepare for another election with momentum is to tick the boxes. Mary Lou is appearing to make every effort not to have another election. The blame game is already on. Electioneering hasn't stopped. Sinn Féin will do well again in the upcoming election benefitting from being blocked by the two established parties. So what about FF and FG? Whatever about the FF and FG TDs engaging in talks, both parties have to have any deal ratified by their grassroots members and what I am hearing is that these people are much less keen on their parties engaging, and leaving the opposition benches to others. One should always be careful what one wishes for. n

At a recent meeting of the enniscorthy st. patrick’s day parade committee it was decided to go ahead with the parade as usual on tuesday, 17th march, commencing at 3.00pm. the parade route will be the same as previous years. The Parade Committee has decided to introduce a theme for this year’s parade and the one selected is climate change/Global Warming. It is hoped that participating groups and individuals will highlight some aspect of the subject that influences their attitude to what is now a worldwide phenomenon affecting peoplewho are experiencing both the subtle and stark effects of climate change. One effect close to home is the banning of smoky coal in Enniscorthy from the 1st September this year. M a n y p e o p l e w e re impressed with the recent demonstrations by young people highlighting their concern that climate change is not being urgently tackled by the powers that be. It is hoped many will take advantage of the parade to highlight their concerns. This year the Parade
Committee has decided to initiate the ceremonial office of Grand Marshal. After a discussion, during which a number of names were mentioned, it was decided to select Seán Doyle as the Parade Grand Marshal for 2020, in recognition of his contribution to the civic, social and cultural life of Enniscorthy over many years. In another welcome develoment, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, in association with the Cottage Autism Network, is delighted to introduce a “Sensory Inclusion Street” for the 2020 Parade. The Sensory Street will be on Templeshannon Quay between the old and new bridge. This area is for people with additional needs to access the parade in an environment which is safe and sensitive to their needs. This area will make the parade accessible to more families and enable individuals who haven’t experienced it before to attend. it’s not too late to enter the parade. the closing date is 10th march, so act now and contact 053-9235119 or 087-6977407, or get an entry form from the c o u n c i l o ff i c e s a t t h e courthouse, court st., or email seanogodubhghaill@gmail.com n

Maria’s short story receives international recognition two new books from exisle publishing will be released later this month: Love & Loss and Struggle & Success. these two anthologies contain within their pages a myriad of life-experiences and a range of inspired authorial voices. the short stories featured in these books are all written by, or about, people 60 years old and over from all around the world. Maria Nolan, well known to all our readers, is a featured author in Love & Loss. Maria’s story, called Fairy Godmother, is about finding a fairy godmother as a young girl growing up in rural Ireland and is a story that is moving and also optimistic. Maria says: “From the time I learned to read, I wanted to write. The twelve-year-old me dreamt about being another Jo March from the novel, and currently popular movie, Little Women, and I suppose in many ways that dream has come true. Jo wrote articles for local newspapers and for many years I’ve been writing for the Slaney News newspaper in Enniscorthy and also wrote a page titled Out and About with Maria Nolan in the weekly Enniscorthy Guardian, exploring and reporting on all the positive happenings and events in our town and environs. “As a feature writer and photographer with the Slaney

Maria Nolan News, I cover interesting events, and do book reviews and feature articles. Jo wrote short stories – some of my own short stories have been published in Ireland’s Own, From Wexford With Love, Stop Waiting For Friday, Love and Loss and other anthologies. However, unlike Jo, I have yet to write the grand novel but hopefully at 62 there is still lots of time for that! “I love to travel and write about the places I visit and I self-published a travel log a couple of years ago with a work colleague titled Over the Sea and Far Away and have another one ready to go to
print titled Up, Up and Away. I also write a blog titled Out and About with Maria Nolan on Wordpress.” Maria is a fulltime civil servant and an extremely busy community activist. She writes introductions, festival brochures, minutes, press releases, programmes for drama, programmes for gaelic games, citations and much more in her capacity as secretary and PRO of many local organisations. So no wonder it’s difficult to find the time to write that grand novel! “I do love my life, busy, active and exciting as it is, so perhaps the short story is the perfect genre for me and that’s why I was delighted to find Exisle Publishing and the Timeless Wisdom Writing Challenge giving me the wonderful opportunity to see my work in print – and what a feeling that is.” Maria relates something about her short story in the book: “My story of love and loss was also a story about fairy godmothers and how they could be there one minute and seemingly vanish the next.
Painting grants in the pipeline enniscorthy municipal district manager, Ger mackey, asked at the february meeting of the council that the members consider favourably a new scheme to support businesses in painting their premises. While the details of this “Paint the Shop”scheme remain to be finalised, it would essentially involve a grant being paid to each owner to subsidise the
painting of their business facade, with the involvement of a colour consultant to advise on an overall colour scheme for the town, so the benefits would be clear for all to see as the work progresses. The scheme would apply in Enniscorthy, Bunclody and Ferns. We’ll carry full details in the Slaney News when they become available. n

Being from Ireland, fairies and the little people have always been a strong possibility for me, now I never actually met any myself but I would be loathe to deny their existence altogether, and fairy godmothers? Well, they would be at the very top of the fairy pyramid, or should that be mound? “A fairy godmother is peculiar to you and in 1966 Ireland being one of five children there was nothing peculiar to me. I was simply one of five, five to be fed, five to be clothed and five to be educated, four others to always have to share everything with, especially your parents’ attention. Then a beautiful vision floats into your monotonous world and treats you as someone special sprinkling magic dust on your unsophisticated rural life, well hell, that was naturally going to leave an indelible mark on my nine-year-old mind and imagination forever. “Time gives us the wisdom to realise a mother’s sacrifice, a father’s love, a friend’s loyalty, or a grandparent’s kindness, as loss and love turn to memory. Often, as time passes, we can find ourselves looking back at moments in our lives and only then truly being able to explore the defining moments and complex feelings and emotions that make us who we are.” The 25 stories in the Love

& Loss book are inspiring, brave and heart-breaking reminders of what is most important: life, love, memory, beauty. As author John Green once said, ‘You can love someone so much… But you can never love people as much as you can miss them.’ These real-life stories are moments in people’s lives that show us the importance of forgiving, the tragedy in forgetting and the turmoil of moving on. From a wife in the heart of South Africa, reminiscing on her husband being taken by the river; to an Australian woman
contemplating the childhood loss of her baby siblings from a new perspective; or the slow burn of unrequited childhood love in 1950s Canada, one can see how loved ones are honoured in this gripping compilation. you will hopefully be aware of my two previous articles regarding the disgraceful treatment nurses and other staff at Wexford General hospital receive from some patients and some members of the general public. despite the harrowing conditions under which these Angels and saints work, they continue to carry out their duties with a smile and a kind word for the patients. It’s not the fault of the nursing staff that wards are being occupied by both male and female patients. Neither is it their fault that patients often have to supply their own pillows, so I’ve been recently informed. It also seems to be common practice now for the ambulance attendants to supply a ‘Medifleece’ to patients to be used to keep them warm
Glenbrien’s Eamonn Sheridan takes another look at our health system and the recent general election. while on trollies in A&E. Is it any wonder that this situation, coupled with the lack of sufficient care for those suffering with mental health problems, has led to a demand by the voting public for a complete change of government. We have a situation where the most popular party in the country (Sinn Féin) are being denied the right to form a government by the very parties that in one case sold us out to foreign banks while the others looked on and did nothing to stop the carnage. Why are they afraid to coalesce with SF? Are they afraid that they will find themselves and their mis-deeds
exposed by a radical left party? The well-heeled (such as Pat Kenny) have the temerity to criticise the young people for voting SF. And yet I for one, as an octogenarian, voted for them. Why? Because I am also sick and tired of watching the behaviour of the two main parties whose only interest is in themselves and their “Golden Circle” friends. Here’s a question for you… is the country running at the moment? Of course it is… why? Because it’s actually run by the civil service. So do we actually need 160 TDs? I say no. I believe two per county is more than enough. But to get back to the main issues. Will the skulduggery ever end? I believe it will when we get rid of the shysters who’ve had it all their own way for almost 100 years. n

It was an afternoon of laughter and fond reminiscence at The Bailey recently as many happy memories came flooding back to the staff of Murphy Floods Hotel at their reunion, almost 20 years since the doors of that most iconic building at the heart of the town closed for the last time. The homely hotel run by the Wall family was part and parcel of everything that happened in Enniscorthy for decades. Residents of the town held weddings, christenings, communions, confirmations, 21st birthdays and funerals at the well known venue, in fact it was the ‘go to’ place for many, from cradle to grave. We celebrated all kinds of homecomings there and Wexford GAA and Strawberry Fair were run from the premises for many years.
There was nowhere quite like Murphy Floods and the Wall family and the staff were always friendly, helpful and courteous. It was a home from home for generations of Scalders, we adjourned there after St. Patrick’s Day Parades, Easter Monday Commemorations and hordes of us rang in many a
Learn to sing at Myles Doyle’s voice studio Enniscorthy’s Myles Doyle is an internationally renowned tenor and vocal coach. Last year he opened locally the 'Voce Liberata' Voice Studio – offering the very best in professional vocal coaching, singing and guitar lessons. The main aim of the school is to provide a supportive learning environment in which the singer can develop confidence in singing and performance. The school provides students with a well-rounded music education and a solid vocal technique that will equip them to sing any style or genre of music! More importantly, it allows them to enjoy the art of singing fully and with confidence – whether they are singing professionally,
amateur or just for the love of it. Myles is very proud of the many successes and achievements of the students over the last year! Anyone interested in taking singing or guitar lessons can contact Myles by telephone: 0870519214 or by email doyle.myles@gmail.com n
New Year at the annual ball. Every organisation in town and beyond held its annual Dinner Dance at the legendary venue. Murphy Floods was synonymous with Enniscorthy, almost akin to Vinegar Hill – once you mentioned you were from the town people remarked on either one or the other.
Margaret Stamp, one of the chief organisers of the recent reunion, said that she was thrilled with the turnout and didn’t know why they had waited so long to do it. Former staff members visited Mrs. Wall at her home for the occasion and presented her with a bouquet of flowers. – Maria Nolan

A fantastic feast of film The 70-strong audience at The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, enjoyed a feast of film recently and all in aid of a very good cause – Focus Ireland and the country’s homeless. Three films were presented all written and directed by the very talented Galwegian, now living in Wexford, Dick Donaghue – What Next Mother starring Mary Gibson, Elaine Jordan, Niall Kennedy and Lauren Jordan, is an amusing tale of a woman who escapes from a nursing home and gives her two rather avaricious children the run around. Dark Waters, starring Sharon Griffiths and David Parsons, is the sad story of love and loss artistically depicted by director Dick Donaghue. The world premiere of
Besties was a real treat for the Enniscorthy audience starring father and daughter Fintan and Jennifer Kelly and Enniscorthy Drama actors Karen Franklin, Jennafer Boyd, Maeve Ennis, Summer Venn Keane, produced by Jer Ennis, with original music by local Enniscorthy Guardian journalist Brendan Keane, father of the aforementioned Summer, another father and daughter combination. Besties is about two best friends who fall out and are brought together again by the ingenuity of the little sister who has her own agenda. Not taking anything from the adult actors in Besties but I have to be honest and say that the three young ladies stole the show – Maeve, Summer and Jennifer are naturals in front of the camera and, mark my words, are going places. Keep
and eye on them because you just might see them on the red carpet some day! Well done to all on a most enjoyable evening – who knows Enniscorthy could become the movie capital of the South East and us not even boasting a cinema! – Maria Nolan

BREE MACRA NA FEIRME – 60TH ANNIVERSARY Formed back in 1960, Bree Macra na Feirme has been an integral part of many people’s lives growing up in the parish of Bree. It has been the building blocks to many friendships and even the odd marriage or two! Sixty years on, it still plays a role in many young people’s lives. Meeting new people, competing for the club and most importantly having fun! As mentioned, this year marks the 60th Anniversary of the club’s existence and it goes without saying that it will be celebrated in a monumental way. The club will be hosting a Dinner Dance on 27th of March 2020 at 7:30pm in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy. Music on the night is by ‘Divine Invention’. Tickets are €35 and can be purchased by contacting (086) 0825018 / (087) 7660602, breemacra@ gmail.com or contacting the Facebook page @Bree Macra. As a club it wants to celebrate and mark this milestone with all past and present members of Bree Macra na Feirme and friends of the club. All are encouraged to make contact with all of your old Macra friends and round up the troops as it is guaranteed to be a brilliant night filled with laughter and reminiscing of days gone by! Also, on the night it is plan-
ning to show a slideshow of photos from Bree Macra through the years so if you have any pictures you would like to share please pass them on through the email mentioned above or the Facebook page. Going from strength to strength over the years, Bree Macra have won their fair share of All-Ireland titles along the way which adds to the excitement and enjoyment of being a part of the club. The two most recent wins of the Senior AllIreland Debating competition in 2019, and in February 2020 the success of the Capers team bringing home the gold from the FBD All Ireland National Capers competition, brought great excitement back into the club. On Saturday night, 1st of February, the Bree Macra Capers Team took to the stage to perform. After months of rehearsals – dances were perfected, voices were at the ready, musical instruments were packed and costumes were ironed – Bree Macra hit the road for Ovens, County Cork, to compete for the All Ireland Capers title. The Bree show was based on the theme of “Promoting Positive Mental Health”. Every scene in the show focused on an important aspect of pro-
moting positive mental health both for oneself and for others. The hall in Ovens, Co. Cork, was packed to the rafters as supporters arrived in their droves from across the country. With five other teams comp e t i n g a l o n g s i d e B re e – Whitechurch, Freemount and Banteer from Cork, Athboy from Meath and Callan from Kilkenny – a full evening of entertainment had been promised and they surely did not disappoint. The adjudicators spoke highly of the entertainment level of the evening, all agreeing that the standard was extremely high and although it made their jobs enjoyable, it was also very difficult. After much deliberation, Bree Macra were crowned All Ireland Capers Champions, a title which had not been outside of the rebel county since the Bree club had won the competition back in 2012. To top off the evening, Sinead Doyle picked up the Best Producer award also. Team members were Conor Byrne, Emma Byrne, Sarah Byrne, Cáit Doyle, Kasey Doyle, Sinead Doyle, Tadhg Harrington, Amy Long, Racheal Long, James Parle, Aoife O’Brien, Niamh Rochford and Johanna Wickham, and the producer was Sinead Doyle. n

ARE YOU
DANCING?
with Declan Flanagan
DeClaN FlaNagaN is the South east’s leading dance teacher specialising in Irish Country Jiving & Ballroom, 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll, line Dancing, etc. He is also well known as a music broadcaster on elite Country Radio He contributes a regular music and dance column to the Slaney News. Welcome to the March edition of the Slaney News where you will get all the bits and bobs on the social dance scene in the southeast. Things are starting to get very busy now. Summer festivals are offering tickets at early bird prices to try and secure a good turnout. The big news on the festival scene is that the Carlow Fest has cancelled their event on the June bank holiday weekend. The dogs on the street had been saying it for a while but the organising committee officially posted it up this week and said they will be back next year all going well. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Bunclody A.F.C. has announced that they are going to run a twoday event on July 4th/5th with big names like Nathan Carter, Michael English, Cliona Hagan and many more already booked to take part. It's a big commitment for any club to take on as those big names don't come cheap and I'm assuming there will have to be a big marquee involved as well so here at the Slaney News we wish them every success with that event. Don't forget, as we reported in last month's issue, that Oylegate are having their very last parish dance on Sunday 8th with Pat Daly so make sure and try and give them a big send-off. I incorrectly said Ray & Gretta Quigley were retiring from parish duties but shur I hear now they are up to their oiksters in a new play. I should have guessed!! T h e I . F. A . d a n c e i n Enniscorthy is no more I'm afraid but after a very successful night in the hall in Monageer on Valentine's night, the committee there has decided to go again on Friday 13th with Teddy & Cathal Barry who are well known on the dance scene in We x f o r d .
And a little bird in the shape of Anne Fenlon tells me that this is going to be a regular monthly dance so make sure and give them every support possible. We are heading to Blackpool to do a dance workshop at Joe Davitt's 10th anniversary celebration with Enjoy Travel. I've never been there before so I'm looking forward to having the craic with Joe and his band. On the day we arrive back we'll be heading to The Lord Bagenal in Leighlinbridge to see Derek Ryan. His brother Adrian Ryan will be getting the night started and you can be sure their dad Pat Ryan will be there somewhere keeping an eye on proceedings. Take my advice if you will and come early, as the last time the lads played here it was a sell-out and there were a lot of disappointed fans turned away at the door. Later on in the month we are doing a dance workshop in the Ashdown Park Hotel at the Des Willoughby Weekend. This event is growing in popularity every year with some of Ireland's top performers taking to the stage along with the Willoughby Brothers themselves so get your tickets early for this one. And March is also the time when the National Jiving Championship takes place in Ballinasloe and an ever-increasing number of participants head up from the southeast each year so we wish them all the best of luck. As I sit here writing this article, everywhere I look is full of yet more breaking news on the coronavirus. 8 weeks ago we had never heard of it, and now it's on the lips of most people worldwide. Ireland has just got
its first confirmed case. With 90,000 people infected worldwide and 3,000 dead, people are understandably worried. Whether it will peter out, or become this pandemic we are hearing so much about, only time will tell. But one thing is for sure, and that is economies worldwide will be hit. Hit hard enough to tip us into another recession will all depend on how long this will play out. Up to 630,000 a year die from the flu so you'd wonder why the hysteria. The scramble for hand sanitiser is at fever pitch, when soap and water will do just as good a job. If you happen to have a stash of face masks in your back shed you could name your price. And even they wouldn't prevent you from contracting the virus. Young people this time are the least likely to become infected as apart from the outbreak of the Spanish flu in 1918 when they were the worst hit. Up to 100 million people were wiped out worldwide then. During the last recession when this country was on its knees, people returned back to the dance halls and have been doing so in ever-increasing numbers since then. I thought that the only thing that could stop the dances was snow, but who would have thought that a virus that started 5,684 miles away in Wuhan, China, could see the doors shut on the dancehalls once again. NEW RELEASES Kerry Fearon - "Ford Econoline". Jive/Quickstep this one, originally a Nanci Griffith hit from 1986. When her gambling, cheating, controlling husband made the mistake by buying her an Econoline, she took off with her five children across America and became a famous singer. Paul Kelly - "Lambing Time". A very lively song, good for a quickstep with real lamb sound effects at the beginning!! This song is really growing on me. It describes all the different types of hardship farmers get in the lambing season.
Cliona Hagan - "When Love Comes Around". Good Jive this one. Originally a hit in 1989 for Juice Newton. The song doesn't tell much of a story really other than someone waiting on a chance of love and not missing out again. Marty Mone - "Truck And Roll". Quickstep this one from Marty himself. All about the trials and tribulations of life on the road in a truck. This is a popular choice with the chaps when we are teaching in the national schools. Lisa McHugh - "The Scandal". More suited for a line dance this one. Looks like Lisa is going down the American country route after her recent spell in Nashville and she's more than good enough. The song is personal, dispelling the rumours that surrounded her during her break from the scene here. She was a guest recently on the Late Late Show. Well, that's all from me this month and I hope to see you all same time same place, in the April edition of Slaney News. n

Inaugural Enniscorthy District GAA Awards The most important basic human need after food, shelter and water, is appreciation, and for that reason County Board Chairman Derek Kent called on the Enniscorthy and Gorey Districts to organise annual Awards Nights for the unsung heroes of our clubs who have dedicated their lives, their energies and their talents to the GAA. Wexford and New Ross Districts have been holding Awards Nights for many years and according to Chairman Kent they are the highlight of the season for award recipients and their families. “It is seldom that we give back to people what they give to us,” Derek Kent went on to say, “but these nights are simple ‘thank yous’ that become treasured memories forever.” The Enniscorthy District Awards were held at Riverside Park Hotel with an attendance of over 200 witnessing valued members of each of the 12 clubs in the District receive awards from former RTE presenter, Wexford Ambassador and big Wexford fan – Anne Doyle. The event was MC’d by former County Chairman and Mayor of Wexford, Tony Dempsey, who read the 200word citation for each recipient along with adding his own recollections of their individual contributions. Tony’s wealth of personal knowledge and his excellent recall contributing Three Wexford Clubs have been successful in their applications to join the GAA Healthy Clubs Project aimed at assisting GAA clubs explore how they can support the holistic health of their members and the communities they serve. Rapparees/Starlights, Cloughbawn and Kilmore have been accepted as three of the 150 clubs in Phase 4 of the Project and were invited to participate in an Officer Orientation Day on Saturday 1st February at GAA headquarters. 1500 clubs around the country applied to be included
immensely to the already shining accolades. When introducing Special Guest, Anne Doyle, Tony described her as ‘a remarkable lady whose loyalty, dedication and allegiance to the place of her birth is to be admired and a p p l a u d e d . A s We x f o rd Ambassador she has championed the Arts, Heritage, Culture, Fashion and Tourism but her burning passion has always been Wexford GAA and she has never hesitated when called upon to show her colours of purple and gold.’ Addressing the audience, Anne spoke of her many memories of Wexford glory days, the homecoming through Ferns in 1956, at the All Ireland Finals in 1968 and 1996, and last year’s Leinster Final and she said she looked forward to the great days yet to come. ‘There is always a feel-good factor to Awards Nights’, she went on, ‘but tonight’s recipients are in a class apart. The unsung heroes who ask nothing for themselves doing what they do for love of club and community without thought of reward or glory. But tonight let us hail our unsung heroes and honour all their achievements and pay tribute to their wonderful contributions.’ A n n e t h e n p re s e n t e d awards to Michael Foley, Ballyhogue, Tom Furlong, Cloughbawn, Maureen Doyle, Davidstown-Courtnacuddy,

GAA Healthy Clubs and 150 clubs were chosen who will now join the existing 142 clubs already operating as Healthy Clubs. The emphasis on the day was very much about networking and sharing information, experiences and knowledge, finding out what other clubs are doing or plan to do over the initial 15 month probation phase at the end of which each club will graduate as an Official Healthy Club if they have completed at least two health initiatives. The training modules were
divided into Developing a Healthy Club Team, Club Mapping and Community Consultation, followed by Action Planning and Case Studies and a very lively Q&A session. Health & Wellbeing is box office at the moment and the benefits of the Healthy Club Project are limitless, not alone increasing the health and wellbeing of all our members which is of course priceless, but with the potential to increase our membership, increase community goodwill, increase
our connectivity and support base, and make us more attractive to potential sponsors and media coverage – so it’s a winwin for all. Rapparees/Starlights are delighted to have been accepted for Phase 4, please continue to watch our club Facebook page and our weekly club newsletters for details of upcoming activity. www.slaneynews.com Eamonn Wall is one of the well known Murphy Floods family who need no introduction to an Enniscorthy audience being at the centre of our town and our lives for a very long time. This modest Enniscorthy man who I have known for many, many years has seven collections of poetry to his credit, along with writing essays, articles and reviews, his books include Writing the Irish West, Ecologies and Traditions, From the Sin-é Café to the Black Hills, Notes on the New Irish, and his latest in 2019, Oven Lane to Sun Prairie, his documentary Your Rivers Trained You was filmed in Enniscorthy and made in collaboration with his longtime friend – local author and playwright Paul O’Reilly. Eamonn is currently the Vice President of the Irish American Writers & Artists Association and is the SmurfitStone Professor of Irish Studies and Professor of English at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He teaches courses in Irish, Irish-American and British Literature, directs the University’s Irish Summer School in Galway, and curates the Irish and Irish American Lectures/Concerts Series for International Studies & Programmes. Eamonn and his talented wife Drucilla have both performed in the Wexford Literary Festival and have been Friends of the Festival and ardent supporters since its inception back in 2013. Recently, I had the opportunity to ask Eamonn to tell me a little about himself and his life on the other side of The Pond. Tell me a little about your current position and what you do? I am a writer and an academic. As a writer, I publish poetry, criticism, and literary journalism and I have been doing this work for forty years. Most days I devote as much time as I can to writing and research. I work as a Professor of Global Studies at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Missouri is right the middle of USA and the place where the great rivers meet: the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois. This year I will have been living and working in St. Louis for twenty years. In addition to what I do in the classroom, I serve as the Director of Irish Studies & Programming for the university (an initiative initially funded by the Smurfit family who had business connections in St. Louis) and this involves directing an international programme in Galway and an Irish Concerts and Lectures series in St. Louis. My job has been to bring Irish performers, artists, and scholars to St. Louis so that

the students and community will learn about Ireland and renew connections with the Irish world. Over the years, many writers, politicians, and performers have come to our campus including President Mary Robinson, Martin Hayes & Denis Cahill, Mary O’Malley, Colm Tóibín, Martin Mansergh, Cherish the Ladies, and many others. Also, I run a study abroad programme in Galway each June and July so that our students have opportunities to study in Ireland and experience Irish life. My position also involves fundraising as I seek scholarship funding for our students to make it possible for them to study in Ireland. What path led you to your current position? I was appointed to this position in 2000. Simply, I applied to an advertisement and was lucky to get the job. Not a dyed-inthe-wool traditional academic, I was attracted to the position because it involved community building: linking the IrishAmerican and other communities of St. Louis with the university. It struck me that there was potential for growth and this has proven to be the case. The University of Missouri-St. Louis is a very young institution, barely fifty years old, and I was attracted to the idea of belonging to a newer project, and to helping it become more international. Mostly, the student body is comprised of first-generation college-going students, and non-traditional students, and students from minorities. A university education will make it possible for these men and women to take advantage of the opportunities that the US offers. Most of the students have never been abroad, have never owned a passport, and so part of my mission is to encourage them to engage with the world beyond the United States. Who and what motivated and influenced you along the way? Along the way I have been guided and influenced by family, teachers, mentors, and friends. Even when I struggled, I was carried along by those who saw some spark of potential in me. Has it been a difficult or enjoyable journey? Some days can be difficult though not difficult compared to what others have had to endure as they moved from one country to another. I have enjoyed living the emi-
The Slaney News is running a series featuring Slaneyside natives and those who live and work here. Each month, Maria Nolan will be talking to a person who is excelling in their chosen field be it Sport, Literature, Business, Entertainment, the Arts, Fashion, Beauty and who is either Slaney born and bred or has a connection to here. The focus of this new endeavour is to shine a light on those from our town who are doing well in their respective careers and life paths, emphasising their influences and motivations with a view to inspiring and encouraging other Enniscorthians to emulate their success.
They would allow us boys watch them as they worked making shoes for people and horses respectively. I learned a great deal from them though I did not realise this until years later. Of course, my real heroes, then and now, are my family – always patient and supportive. How would you describe yourself? At a very basic level, I am a mostly shy and introverted person who is happiest sitting quietly at home with pen and paper, a book, and music playing in the background. But I know that it is not a good idea to be like this all the time, and that I need to earn a living, so I like to go out into the world where I can engage with others, help people if I can, and learn from the example set by others. I love to sit among a group of people and listen to what each person has to say.
Eamonn Wall: “An Enniscorthy thoroughbred” grant/immigrant life while also getting to spend a couple of months each year in Ireland. But most definitely enjoyable. I have had the opportunity to do things and to travel to places I would not have thought possible while growing up. I am an optimist. As a child what did you want to be when you grew up? I had no clear idea of this when I was a child. All that interested and concerned me was happening in Enniscorthy. If I thought anything, it was that I would always live in Enniscorthy because the town was the world in those more isolated times. It took me a long time to understand what really interested me and what I was best suited to. I suppose that I lacked role models while growing up as I did not encounter poets as I made my childhood rounds of Enniscorthy. Of course, there were always poets in Enniscorthy; however, it was not a path that
people liked to say they were on in those times. Nowadays, it is quite different. People have more confidence in their abilities and there is a greater acceptance of diversity – in many areas. Who were your childhood heroes? The public heroes of my childhood were Wexford hurling players and various mythical figures from history and politics. For me, these were compelling though remote because I found it hard to see anything of my own self in them. In the 1960s I liked the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Patrick Kavanagh, among others. The one public individual I most admired as a young adult was Bernadette Devlin: she was brave, unconventional, and ground-breaking. I liked spending time as a child with the older people – that’s how they seemed at the time – and I recall how interesting neighbours like Marty Wilson and Sonny Grace were.
25
How would you like to be remembered? I will let others decide on this. What’s the one thing about you few people know? I am allergic to chocolate and I think I am missing out on something important as a result. What do you think is the best thing about Enniscorthy/ Wexford/Ireland? Some aspects of the town have remained unchanged over the decades and many of these I am very fond of: the river, the prom, the old buildings, the railway station, and even the steep hills. And the local people are interesting, intelligent, friendly and opinionated. Enniscorthy has always had the feel of home to me. The extension of the prom has been great and I hope that more areas are opened up to pedestrians in and around the town. Also, there’s great energy nowadays to develop the arts in town through the creation of The Presentation Centre and the Wexford Literary Festival. There was nothing like this while I was growing up.
How do you motivate and influence people? The people who have helped and motivated me the most have done so quietly. They are/were the people who teach without seeming to teach, who reveal things about life and behaviour through their own example. As a Professor of English, I show that I am enthusiastic about the subject and this gets students on my side and motivated. I tell them that I don’t have all of the answers and that I don’t trust people who do, or think they do. I try to engage with people in a dialogue rather than trying to push them. A writer is often discouraged so I try to get people to persist even when it is not easy.
What do you think is the worst thing about Enniscorthy/ Wexford/Ireland? Since I don’t live in Enniscorthy, except for about a month each year, I am not qualified to make such judgements. Better to ask someone else who knows more.
What are you most proud of? There’s a poem of mine on Slaney Street and it is great to be honoured in this way. And I was really proud to be involved in editing and publishing The Scaldy Detail, with Paul O’Reilly and my brother Niall Wall, because it provided opportunities for beginning writers to have their work published.
What was the best day of your life? Too many to mention.
What do you dislike about others? I like people to be direct but respectful. Passive aggressive people infuriate me because they are so dishonest. If you could live in another time, when would it be? I can’t imagine living in any other time than this.
What do you like most about your job/career? I think everyone will agree that education is important, and I agree with this of course. I enjoy the diversity and flexibility. Both the writing and the academic parts of my career work well together. Because I work with a lot of people who are much younger than me and who do not always think like I do, I am able to understand the world in a more complex way.
If you could be or do anything else what would it be? I have the feeling that what I do – writing and teaching – are the only things I am able to do, that I am something of a one or two trick pony and that I would be hopeless at most other occupations. A one or two trick pony – I don’t think so Eamonn Wall. What an extraordinary man and what an illustrious career. Eamonn you are an Enniscorthy thoroughbred and one that we are extremely proud and glad to call our own. – Maria Nolan

Vegetarianism is on the rise as 40% of people in a recent SuperValu survey revealed they plan to increase their number of vegetarian meals in the next 12 months. One in four people surveyed said they were going to try and make the effort to eat more vegetarian meals, with both women and Dubliners more inclined to make the switch. Currently 59% of people are cooking meat-free meals at least once a week, survey results show. SuperValu is encouraging shoppers to eat in-season produce, as only 14% of those surveyed said it was something they looked for when shopping. Gillian McGowan, Fruit a n d Ve g e t a b l e C a t e g o r y Manager, SuperValu said; “At SuperValu we strive to ensure we work with all our Irish producers to provide the best quality seasonal produce for our shoppers. In season fruit and vegetables are tastier, more nutritious and incur less food miles. We highlight and promote our in-season produce in stores to help consumers identify the freshest and best quality local produce for the best value.” Worryingly, only 4% of respondents said they ate the recommended seven portions of fruit and vegetables every day, while over a third sur-
veyed eat less than two portions each day. Aveen Bannon, Consultant Dietitian, commented on the findings; “It is very disappointing and worrying to see only 4% of people are getting their seven portions of fruits and vegetables a day. My advice to people is to eat a rainbow but particularly include fruit and vegetables that are in season! Fruits and vegetables contain natural compounds called phytochemicals which give them their characteristic colour, flavour, smell or texture. These compounds together with vitamins, minerals and fibre, can really help reduce the risk of many diseases. “People should challenge themselves to include colour at every meal to reap these benefits and to boost their immune system. People can make simple changes to ensure they are getting more fruit and vegeta-
bles into their diets – changes such as, adding berries to their porridge or yogurt, switching to fruit for a snack or dessert and setting aside a particular day in the week to cook a tasty vegetarian meal or even making a soup from leftover vegetables. It’s not hard or expensive with all the offers on fruit and vegetables however it is so important for people’s health, both young and old, to maintain a balanced and healthy diet.” The survey also revealed what Ireland does with the leftover produce, with almost half (45%) shockingly throwing it in the bin. 39% of people said they would make a leftover meal, while just under a third said they make soup and 18% said they freeze them. VET DIARY FOR MARCH
with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital This month, Joe Kavanagh discusses the case of ‘Rodney’. A couple of years ago a client brought in her dog with a small lump on his right hind stifle (knee). He's a Lurcher dog, great character, belongs to her son, and of course is loved by all. We examined the lump and although my feeling was it wasn't anything nasty it was in an awkward place to operate. It wasn't bothering him and he was pretty much oblivious to it so we decided to hold off doing surgery and keep a check on him regularly which we did. Over time it was increasing in size but very slowly, and still he was going about his business every day and seemingly not bothered by the lump. He was climbing up in years too and needless to say the owner wasn't relishing the possibility of surgery to remove it. For me, if I see an animal with a growth that I feel needs surgery, I hold off the temptation to just jump in there, and I try to treat the underlying causes first if I can, then when we feel the time is right and they're as strong as we can get them, then we go in and operate. The owner kept in touch with me over the years and 'Rodney' was in for various different ailments over that time and we kept a check on the lump. It wasn't sore or bothering him but yep, little by little, it was gaining in size and so when Rodney came into me a few weeks back the lump was now getting big enough to be cumbersome and affecting his gait... so we set about building him up for the surgery with special supplements to detox the body, tweaks to his diet to build him up, and all the while monitoring him and the mass. Needless to say there was a lot of anxiety from home, all the possibilities that might happen... will he make it through the anaesthetic, has the growth spread to other places... the list can be endless. The fateful day finally came to operate. Our client’s son brought him out himself, handed him over to the team and placed his faith in us yet again. It was a reasonably long operation, the mass had a huge blood supply to it but it was very well encapsulated and we were confident that we got it all. Rodney made it through the anaesthetic and has been in for a few revisits since and is going from strength to strength. He is 17 and has no intention of slowing down. Right from the beginning they followed our instructions to the letter and it’s just so good to get a good outcome to a situation that was fraught with dangers. It's people like Rodney's owners and characters like Rodney that make our job really worthwhile. Thanks to the team but especially to Rodney and his owners. Timely reminders: Flea treatments probably due from now on. Cats come into heat from now on so you may want to think of neutering or spaying. n

Volvo S60
REVIEW BY CAROLINE KIDD Volvo is bravely stepping into the future with the new Volvo S60 – without diesel. the new S60 is the first Volvo to be produced without a diesel engine and will be sold exclusively powered by a petrol engine or as a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid. this move is part of a bold statement from the brand about transport beyond the traditional combustion engine that will see all new generation Volvos from 2019 now sold only as either a mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid or battery electric vehicle. Being a typical Swede, Volvo has the politics just right

for this car. The S60 is simple, handsome and discrete but still with enough star power to draw some admiring glances. Volvo interior design is some of the best in the business and the new S60 is no exception. Volvo probably wouldn’t say this in a press release, but mysteriously you will feel calmer and more relaxed behind the wheel. I did! The UN have been in here for sure. There are no distractions, just a simple layout built around a 9″ tablet-style touchscreen with voice-activated control, navigation system and access to the Volvo On Call connected services platform. The system

also connects easily to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s comfortable and good quality. Interior accommodation is good for the segment with generous footwells in the rear and boot volume a competitive 442 litres. The new S60 is built at Volvo’s new Charleston plant in South Carolina, USA, on Volvo’s SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, which also underpins the S90, V60, V90, XC60 and XC90. The S60’s chassis strikes a good balance between comfort and control, while the steering is precise and responsive. Double wishbone front suspension and
Volvo’s integral rear suspension reap dividends for surprisingly sporty handling and keep weight to a minimum for more agility. My test car was a S60 T5, which is powered by a 2.0litre petrol engine putting out 250 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The T5 is fun and responsive to drive with a slick shifting 8speed automatic gearbox. The problem is it will never be as economical as a diesel. Over a week of driving, ay average fuel consumption was 8.2l/100km. In Ireland, the S60 range kicks off at €46,222 for a T4 petrol with 190hp, while the T5 R-Design model I had on test

has a list price of €49,495. Equipment includes leather sports seats, sports steering wheel, LED headlights, keyless entry and start, head-up display, 18" alloy wheels, 12.3” driver information display and cruise control. There’s also the S60 ‘T8 Twin Engine’ plug-in hybrid powertrain with 390 hp. The 11.8 kWh battery on board gives an electric-only range of up to about 58 km, with CO2 emissions from just 39g/km. When not in pure EV mode, it runs as a hybrid with support from a petrol engine. It has potential to be a more economical car to run however it has a comparatively high sticker price of €62,495. Dropping diesel is very fashionable but might be a lit-
tle premature when it comes to the transport needs of customers in a segment favoured by long distance, company car drivers. For everyone else, the new Volvo S60 is a great alternative mid-size sports saloon that’s fun to drive with the refined response of a petrol engine. SLANEY OLYMPIC Irish Life Health National Intermediate and Masters Cross Country (Wicklow): It was a great day for Slaney Olympic runners at the recent Irish Life Health National Intermediate and Master Cross Country race at Avondale House (County Wicklow). For the Intermediate Men’s 8000m race, Slaney Olympic’s Ger Forde was very much in the national title hunt coming from 4th place to 2nd place on the last lap to bring home the silver medal. Will Doyle also had a great run placing 65th overall. The County Wexford Team, led by Forde, also brought home the silver medal scoring 172 points (placing behind Dublin and ahead of Wicklow). For the Master Men’s race, Slaney Olympic’s Billy Reck and Jim Stafford finished the race within two seconds of each other, 29:18 and 29:20 respectively. Stafford just missed out on a medal finishing 4th overall in the Master Men’s O60 category. The County Wexford Team, which included both Stafford and Reck, just missed out on a Men’s O50 County Medal finishing 4th overall.
Ger Forde (Slaney Olympic) – enjoying a great run of success.
Creane & Creane Insurance Enniscorthy 10K: Storm Dennis did not deter Slaney Olympic from hosting the Enniscorthy 10K on 16th February, a sold-out event with 400 registrations. Although a little windy, running conditions were ideal as the rain stayed away. The new route along the Old Dublin Road also proved very popular with the runners as there were a number of runners that indicated they had a PB. The support from club members, family members and friends
of the club to setup and take down, marshal, provide food and assist with tea/coffee was phenomenal. The entire Slaney Olympic Club would also like to thank its sponsors: Creane & Creane Insurance who sponsor the club’s Race Series (Enniscorthy 10K and Strawberry Miles); Lifestyle Fitness for allowing the use of their great facilities for the day, and Liam Cooper and Sons. The club would also like to thank all of the runners who braved the elements to run and it looks forward to doing it all again next year! top three Men Home: Ger Forde (Slaney Olympic - 33:10). No stopping Anne! Slaney Olympic’s anne gilshinan continues to make headlines in the world of middle distance running. The multi world-record holder was recently named the World Masters Middle Distance athlete of the Year, the first Irish athlete ever to achieve that distinction. Anne, a native of Co. Cavan, gave up running at 20 years of age and only came back to it thirty years later. Anne got the 2020 season off to the perfect start with another World and European Record at the recent National
Indoor Athletics event at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena. Anne set a new World and European Record in the Mile with a superb time of 5:13.90. Anne followed up with with another World Record in the 1500m on 22nd February at the Leinster Indoor Championships in Abbottstown, with a fantastic time of 4:46:10 (W55). Anne looks well set to achieve great things at the European Indoor Master Championships in March at Braga, Portugal. n
Enniscorthy’s Kevin strikes first!
Anne displaying gritty determination
Enniscorthy’s Kevin O’Connor had the distinction of scoring the first goal of the new season in the League of Ireland, netting just after half-time for Waterford against St. Patrick’s Athletic in Richmond Park. The Enniscorthy native (and a previous Lotto winner!) has returned to Waterford on loan from parent club Preston North End, having previously gone out on loan from Preston to Fleetwood Town, Crewe Alexandra and Cork City.
Well known GAA stalwart and long-standing member of the Rapparees/Starlights, Richie Peare, who after an illustrious career in the GAA laid down his camán to take up the golf club, being presented recently with the Enniscorthy Senior Perpetual Cup by Enniscorthy Captain Pat Webster in recognition of his achievements as Player of the Year 2019. Well done Richie from all at Rapparees/Starlights and Enniscorthy Golf Club.

Plastic In association with Science gallery Dublin at Wexford County Council, Carricklawn, Wexford 2 March – 17 april 2020 Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm. www.wexfordcoco.ie Wexford County Council in partnership with Science Gallery Dublin and Wexford Arts Centre are pleased to present PLASTIC – a touring exhibition which interrogates our current and future relationship with the material. The unsustainability of our relationship with plastic is well documented, but to stop using it completely is not an option. Its use has revolutionised industrial design and more essentially, modern medicine relies on plastic so heavily that even the most basic medical procedures would be unimaginable without it. Plastics are a global but relatively recent problem, meaning our environment and our culture has plasticity – we can mould and change it, both intentionally and unintentionally. The question is, can we utilise this wonderful, terrible material, while fundamentally changing our approach to living with PLASTIC? The exhibition will tour to the Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda in May and June, and continue to Galway, Limerick and Letterkenny. In each location, the exhibition will launch with a new commission that has been co-created with the commu-

nity to recontextualise the local conversation about plastic. ‘Polycetacea’ is a new work by Ed Devane. The theme of the piece was derived during a codesign workshop in Wexford where participants identified the county's coastal areas, and the effects of plastic pollution on them, as common concerns. The final piece – an abstract sculptural representation of a whale – will feature several sound-making elements that respond to visitor movement in the County Council. Ed Devane will also be running a free twoday workshop in March with local communities in Wexford exploring music instrument making, using recycled plastics. SUBSET, the artist collective group, are also being commissioned to create a mural on the theme of PLASTIC in Wexford town.
The tour of PLASTIC will culminate in a one-day summit at the end of 2020 bringing together communities, artists, designers, researchers, students, scientists and policy-makers to evaluate and discuss our relationship with this material. For further information on the exhibition and workshop, please contact Catriona

In this issue I am reviewing a recent bestseller by British author Lucy Foley titled The Hunting Party. Lucy Foley is better known for historical fiction and this gripping tale is her debut crime novel. Set on a remote, isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands, nine friends all in their 30s come together to celebrate New Year’s Eve as they have been doing since they were all at university together many years before. They arrive on 30th December to the idyllic hunting lodge that they share with only two other guests, the manager of the lodge and the gamekeeper. Lucy In true murder mystery suspense, Foley we the readers hear snippets of each of their stories as secrets unfold jealousy, hatred, lust, love, envy, infatuation, greed, making all of the characters a possible suspect or victim. When a snow blizzard cuts them off from the outside world the scene is perfectly set 'mes amis' as that master of suspense, Hercule Poirot, would say for 'murder most foul'. As the New Year’s Eve celebrations commence, one of the guests disappears and later a body is found but the reader doesn't find out which guest disappeared or the identity of the body until much later as the story switches between past and present keeping us entertained and intrigued until the very end. A very good read, very cleverly written with definite Agatha Christie overtones including a remote location, isolated by inclement weather, a limited pool of suspects with continued revelations about their pasts. A traditional 'who dunnit', The Hunting Party is a must for those like me who love the genre, it will keep you guessing right to the bitter end. – Maria Nolan
