Town Clerk in Enniscorthy to take up the role of County Development Officer based in County Hall, Wexford. Following the major reform of local government last year the Town Clerk position was abolished and replaced by a new District Manager position. Recent interviews for the four District Manager positions in Co. Wexford have resulted in Padraig moving back to Enniscorthy to

fill this new and challenging role. David Minogue, who had been filling the role of District Administrator, will now be moving to a communications position in County Hall. The appointment of Padraig has been broadly welcomed particularly as he is from the Enniscorthy area and very familiar with the issues facing the town. We wish both Padraig and David the very best of luck in their new jobs. n

comment Last month we reflected on the wonderful facilities we have here in Enniscorthy considering we’re a relatively small town – the new state-of-the-art, international standard, running track; the Country Walk by the Slaney; the beautiful Presentation Centre; a high-standard community pool and fitness complex; the impressive Astro Centre; the revamped Greyhound Track; two 4-star hotels; top class sports facilities for virtually every sport you can think of, etc. Unfortunately one facility is missing off this list – a cinema. This is all the more tragic considering the success the movie Brooklyn (which was largely filmed in Enniscorthy) is likely to enjoy over the coming months following its critically acclaimed premiere at the U.S. Sundance film festival (see page 30). Isn’t it ironic that Enniscorthy – the home of Brooklyn – is unable to provide a home for its screening here in Ireland. In 2013 a major Facebook campaign was launched to try and have the local cinema re-opened garnering almost 1,000 “Likes” but to no avail. We can only hope that some knight in shining armour will emerge from the lingering shadow of austerity to establish a cinema here in Enniscorthy perhaps in time for Brooklyn Part II! – Frank Corcoran

Major new business for Enniscorthy’s eastside The eastside of Enniscorthy has lagged behind over the years in terms of economic development so when a major new business opens up on the eastside of town it is indeed newsworthy. This is particularly the case when new jobs are involved and in this case seven new jobs have come on stream with the recent opening of a new state-of-the-art motor factor business in Clonhaston, just one mile from Enniscorthy’s town centre. Alcast Motor Factors is part of the Donohoe Motor Salvage Group – one of the largest motor salvage operations in Ireland and the sole representative salvage company for AXA Insurance in Ireland. The motor salvage and factor businesses are owned and run by local man, Padraic Donohoe, who has many years of experience in the motor salvage and parts trade. A substantial amount of money has been invested in the Clonhaston premises to make Alcast Motor Factors one of the top motor factor businesses in the country. The front counter at Alcast is headed up by local man James Wilson ably assisted by Davy Canavan. Between them James and Davy have over 50 years experience in the motor

factor trade. They are assisted by Theo Butler and Kenneth Murphy who also have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the trade. While having local, experienced and helpful staff is important, what gives Alcast an extra edge is its “here and now” service. This means it keeps a huge range of parts in stock so a customer rarely, if ever, has to wait for a part and in those rare cases where a part is not immediately in stock it can be got and delivered to the customer within a matter of hours via Alcast’s own delivery service which covers all of Co. Wexford and operates on a daily basis. So what kinds of products does Alcast stock in-house? The range is huge and the brands are the leading ones: Delphi for steering and braking (a range of 450 in brake pads and 120 in brake discs). Gates for fan belts and timing belt kits. Blueprint and Ufi for filters. SNR for wheel bearings. Luk for clutch kits. Bosch for batteries, wipers and heater plugs, etc. And when it comes to lubrication Alcast stocks a huge range of Castrol and Fuchs products. ABS hydraulic products include brakes hoses, cylinders and brake calipers

Sam with his cards from Pope Francis.

Pope responds to Enniscorthy boy Young Samuel McNally from Enniscorthy, who has just turned 8 years of age, made his own Christmas cards this year and sent one off to Pope Francis. In January an envelope arrived from the Apostolic Nunciature in Ireland and inside was a Christmas Card from Pope Francis along with some photo cards of the Pope. Needless to say Sam was overjoyed at the fact that he got a response and was delighted to know that the Pope received his card. According to Sam’s mother, Patricia, “Sam couldn't wait to get into school to show his teacher and and tell his friends that he got a Christmas card from Pope Francis”. Patricia believes the fact that Sam’s card was acknowledged in this way says a lot about the kind of person Pope Francis is. n

(top 30). For alternator tensioners – the top 50 popular ones are kept in stock. Alcast also stocks a huge range of recycled parts so they can offer customers that as an option. Alcast is both a retail and

trade business so whether you’re an individual member of the public or involved in the motor trade, all are welcome at Alcast where the experienced and helpful staff will help you find the right product for you.

Alcast Motor Factors is open six days a week from 9-6pm Monday to Friday, 95pm on Saturday and open through lunch every day. With 26 parking spaces outside the front door you’re always sure of lots of free

parking and a warm welcome from the Alcast team. Plans are in train for an official opening of the impressive new premises. So keep an eye on the “Slaney News” Facebook page for details and updates. n

National exhibition for Enniscorthy Castle Exhibition: The Irish Volunteers in Focus 1913–1918. Location: Enniscorthy Castle. Dates: 4th to 27th February 2015. Admission: Free. Wexford County Council and Enniscorthy Castle in collaboration with the Military Archives, Dublin, are delighted to announce the arrival of a travelling exhibition, ‘The Irish Volunteers in Focus 1913 – 1918’, which will be on display in Enniscorthy Castle from 4th to 27th February. The exhibition, developed b y s t a ff a t t h e M i l i t a r y Archives, was unveiled by President Higgins in the Rotunda, Dublin, in November 2013 to commemorate the establishment of the Volunteers. As an action under the Co. Wexford Decade of Commemorations strategy, the exhibition will be launched by Cllr. Malcolm Byrne, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, on Friday,

6th February next at 7pm in Enniscorthy Castle. Speakers will include Cllr. BarbaraAnne Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy Municipal District and Seán Óg Ó Dubhghaill, chairman of the 1798 Centre Committee and of the 1916 Sub-Committee. Following the launch, a brief presentation will be made by Captain Claire Mortimer from the Military Archives on the Irish Volunteers and on collections in the repository relevant to the revolutionary period. The exhibition will document all major events associated with the Irish Volunteers, including their establishment in 1913, the Howth Gun Running, the Volunteer split, the 1916 Rising, the General Elections of 1918 and the formation of the first Dáil. As an accompaniment, a selection of documents and artefacts from Wexford County Council archive will be on display featuring many of the

Volunteers from Co. We x f o r d who took part in 1916. “This is an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the legacy of the period and to remember those who were at the forefront in the fight for Irish independence. It is also appropriate given the emphasis placed on the preservation of the Irish language by the Volunteer movement that the exhibition is presented in bilingual format”, observes Gráinne Doran, Archivist, Wexford County Council. Acting Manager of Enniscorthy Castle, Rory O’Connor, commented: “We are delighted to host ‘The Irish Volunteers in Focus’ exhi-

bition and are thrilled that Enniscorthy has been chosen as one of the few venues outside of a military setting to display this national exhibition, which is in no doubt due to the significant role that the Irish Vo l u n t e e r s p l a y e d i n Enniscorthy during the 1916 Rising”. essentiaL soft ware As I started putting together this article I realised there's way too much to fit into this single column, so expect to see a part 2 and a part 3 in the coming months. As with all free software, keep an eye out for any bundled extras that try to sneak in during the installation process, just take your time, don't just keep clicking next, and you should be fine. Before you roll up your sleeves and start slinging software around, make sure to snag your Web browser of choice. Firefox is a tremendous option in its own right, but my money’s on Chrome, which won PCWorld’s browser showdown. But hey, they’re both free! Piriform makes this must-have system tool – the legendary CCleaner. It does all the dirty work required to keep your PC running in tip-top shape, including ditching unwanted cookies, wiping your browser history, deleting unnecessary files, and keeping your Windows Registry sparkling clean.

optimal desktop experience, but if you want the classic Windows feel (or just want to skip the modern-style Start screen completely), you’ll need a Start-menu replacement. My favourite is Classic Shell. Of course it goes without saying, use an antivirus. If you're going down the free route both Avast and AVG are very good, but I per-

sonally use the paid for annual subscription Kaspersky. As ever if you have queries about this article or you’d like me to talk about a tech issue that interests or concerns you in a future article, then pop me an email at sam@getitfixed.ie, or you can phone the shop on 053 9238544. n

Computers rocking the Start-menu-free Windows 8 are common these days. Sure, you can tweak the live-tiled OS pretty extensively to get a near-

An Animated Experience I have just returned from a most enjoyable visit to Belfast with a group of remarkable women – the Cobh Animation Team. These amazing volunteers established in 2012 to coincide with the Titanic commemorations have been doing their bit for Cobh ever since – taking volunteerism and indeed tourism to a completely different level. I met the ladies quite by accident on a visit to Cobh in 2012 and was immediately captivated by the innovative and elegant idea, and we have kept in touch since then. Last year the Animation Team won a trip with Irish Rail for themselves and 6 friends and they decided to head to Belfast and I was one of those fortunate enough to be asked to travel with them. We met at Connolly Station and took the 1.20pm train to Victoria Station Belfast. A most pleasant and scenic journey with the women in excellent spirits and indeed excellent voice as they sang along the carriages accompanied by

famous Cork singer/song writer Jimmy Crowley who was also travelling with the troupe to Belfast. The Animation Team and friends were booked into the Europa Hotel in Belfast’s city centre – the most bombed hotel in Europe in the not too distant past – sure where else would you be inclined to stay? After check-ins and photo shoots and radio interviews it was off across the road to the equally famous Crown Bar for even more photographs. The following morning the women were given a Civic Reception at City Hall and made connections commercial and otherwise between Cobh and Belfast. These charming ambassadors are not just pretty faces and glamorously clad models they are determined women under the tutelage and guidance of the very capable, elegant and polished Cllr Claire Cullinane, who are putting Cobh on the map with a smile. Then it was off to the truly awesome Titanic Experience

where our ladies were afforded a special treat in the form of a photo shoot on the grand Titanic staircase. Interestingly, this is one of only three staircases of its type made – one for Titanic, one for the Vatican and one, believe it or not, for our very own Loftus Hall in Wexford! And the ladies confirmed that they would be agreeable to visit Loftus and have a photo shoot on the staircase there – now wouldn’t that be a nice Wexford connection to both Cobh and Belfast? Accompanied by the Mayor of Cork, Shawlies from Cork and the Dunmanway Ladies, these women are creating a stir and making a mark wherever they go. They are not sitting back waiting for people to come to Cobh they are bringing Cobh to the world in the nicest and most glamorous way and you know something else – they are having a ball doing it. Now isn’t that something that we could all learn from? Enniscorthy – with its new

Maria relaxing with the ladies at the Europa Hotel, Belfast.

Re-enactment group could do well to take a leaf from this book. The ladies are now preparing a new costume look for their next big event – the Lusitania Commemorations on 7th May in Cobh and have indicated to me that they would be more than willing to join us in Enniscorthy for any

1916 events that we might be planning and what’s more they would even create a whole new wardrobe for it. Now wouldn’t these lovely, elegant ladies add something completely different to the1916 Enniscorthy experience – it’s all about connections – so watch this space! – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Re-enactors looking the part! Although 2015 has only just dawned, Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society hit the ground running – or should I say marching – as they braved the bitter cold of mid January to join other groups from around Leinster including Ashbourne, Monasterevin and Kilkenny at the very impressive Collins Barracks, Dublin, in preparation for 2016. On Saturday 17th Jan they were put through their paces by drill sergeants from Lord Edwards Own and the Irish Great War Society who took no pity on the would be

Volunteers as they paraded them around Clarke Square for two and a half hours on one of the coldest days of winter yet. After all the exertion it was nice that the groups were invited to participate in some pageantry, organised for visitors to Collins Barracks on the day, depicting the formation of the Irish Free State as members of a British Battalion lowered the Union Jack in the centre of the square and members of the Irish Free State Army watched by a Battalion of Volunteers raised the Tricolour amid cheers for the Republic.

Collins Barracks is a most remarkable collection of buildings housing the National Museum with many very interesting exhibitions including Stories from the Great War and one that I had a particular wish to visit – The Eileen Gray Expo on the 3rd floor with audiovisual details of Eileen’s life as told by herself in an interview in her twilight years. A must for a visitor from Enniscorthy and well worth a viewing. All of the exhibitions are free to the public and enough to spend at least half a day or more there so do put in on your summer calendar.

Before & After – a hidden treasure The sign says “Before & After” with the motto – “be inspired, be creative, begin…” The purpose – furniture design and re-design, restyling, restoration, upholstery and repair, well that’s the narrative. I found this little gem “Before & After” at the old dance hall down at the end of Redmond Street (behind Pettitt’s) in Enniscorthy. The welcoming proprietor, Elaine O’Brien, told me they stock old and new but “retro” was what sprung to my mind so I mentioned that to the ever helpful Elaine who was of the opinion that, “Retro is whatever it means to you. You can interpret it for yourself.” The furniture on display looked forever young and would definitely have a place in most homes, big or small. I saw child re n ’ s w a rd ro b e s w h i c h reminded me of Punch & Judy huts, very colourful sofas, very comfortable chairs and various units of different colours and sizes. There was this really old farmhouse table I just loved – it had been revamped really

well – if you’ve seen the Late Late Show revamp you’ll know what I’m talking about! The welcome I found in Before & After was lovely and charming. Before & After can be found on Redmond St, Enniscorthy. You can phone Elaine on 087-6004538. Good luck to Elaine and the team in Before & After. – Donal Cullen n

€70 million fund available to clubs and local projects UCIT (Ulster Community Investment Trust Ltd) is a community organisation providing loan finance to other communities across Ireland. Over 15 years, they’ve loaned over €50 million to groups in every province on the island. They now have €70m more to lend via a Social Finance Fund (www.ucitltd.com / www.sff.ie). Here’s an example of a group in Dungarvan who have already accessed this fund: “In installing floodlights at Kilrush Park, the club fell short in raising funds from our own bank and the credit union but UCIT

came to the rescue. Dungarvan United AFC lit up our home ground in January 2015 and couldn’t have done so without UCIT” (David Walsh, Chairman, Dungarvan United AFC). If your group could manage without borrowing, it would! However, despite fewer grants, and restricted access to bank finance, there remains the need to improve or develop community infrastructure. In association with Wexford Local Development, UCIT is hosting a session entitled: “How to Access Social Finance (A

Step by Step Guide for Voluntary Groups).” The event will cover all the basic elements of what an investor looks for when assessing funding applications. The session is low on jargon and assumes your group may never have had to access repayable finance before. It will take place in The Presentation Centre, Convent Road, Enniscorthy, this evening (Wednesday 4th February) at 7.30pm. If you are interested, please confirm attendance by e i t h e r e m a i l i n g w m u rphy@WLD.ie or phoning UCIT on 041-6858637. n

Keep an eye out for them as you will see lots more of them over the coming months. The Guides are being run by the very capable and energetic Una, Marion and Rachel. The Guiders are having a great time also and are enjoying spending time with the

girls and getting to know other leaders in the region. If you are interested in joining either for yourself or your daughter please contact Una at 087-965 4479. Guiding is a great expe-

rience for girls and women of all ages so it’s great to see Enniscorthy group expanding. If you would like to know more about Guiding you can check the national website at www.girlguidesireland.ie n

Drivers are asked to be available between the hours of 11.45am–1.00pm Monday to Saturday for one week of the year. Driver schedules will be issued well in advance and can be changed to suit. If interested in participating in this vital community service, please speak to one of the office team in Enniscorthy Community Services Council or please ring them on 053 9233746. n

The Case for the Prosecution

You DeCiDe!

by Jamie Murphy HuSTLE iS oN You Sometimes films get swept up in hype and awards nominations. They take on a whole new life and seemingly transcend normality. And to be brutally honest, some of them just don’t measure up and justify their lofty ascensions. american Hustle was one such movie. Much was made of it when it was released and I will freely admit to being mildly intrigued by the trailer when I saw it the first time. The trailer was sadly the sum of its parts and one of the few good things about the movie. Before we get stuck in, there were four other good things. Namely Christian Bale’s gut and woeful wig, Amy Adam’s plunging neckline, Bradley Cooper’s magnificent mini afro and Jennifer Lawrence. All these things stand out like little jewels in an otherwise bland, overlong mountain of slop. The trailer pulled me in straight away. The quick, pacy cuts, the music, the voiceover. All to me appeared to be an homage to the daddy, Martin Scorcese. I was intrigued. However the finished product resembled a first year’s interpretation of one of Marty’s best, Goodfellas. A tastefully done homage is one thing. However, over the course of this overlong movie the director, David O. Russell literally steals trademarks from the daddy and throws a mish-mash of them together hoping some will stick. The most annoying being the constant, over-use of narration. We get it. You need to explain to us what’s going on, but sometimes less is more. A con movie can benefit from exposition but there is too much here. The script to be fair requires the narration as it gets more and more convoluted as it rolls on. And even then, you will be confused and sick of hearing about it. The use of music in a movie, expertly done by the daddy, especially during dramatic or significant scenes is crucial to a good movie becoming a great movie. Imagine watching Jaws with the sound down. It’s basically a small Maine town and Rob Schneider being scared shitless by a huge, mechanical creation. That infamous shower scene in Psycho with the mute button on turns the scene into Janet Leigh being stabbed with a sharp object resembling a toothpaste tube and deathly swirls of chocolate sauce flowing down the

drain. Hustle uses music as well… Terribly. Russell seems to have missed the point of popular music interwoven into a scene. The film is set in the 1970’s so he wheels out relevant tunes. Jennifer Lawrence delivers a magnificent performance in this movie and is possibly the greatest thing about it. She tries really hard to do a good job and she wins. Magnificent. But the director risks this well-deserved accolade in a scene that makes me cringe re-watching it. He gets her to sing Live And Let Die in a scene that is meant to use the song to mirror her current situation. It doesn’t appear this way, it just seems like her character has escaped from a local psych hospital and uses lyrics instead of words. Atrocious. The movie tries and fails on several occasions to achieve that rare moment of cinema gold when a song weaves into a scene and becomes one of the same. The overall feel of the film is one of a disjointed mess. In an attempt to make it seem flashy, cutting edge and fast-paced, it just blurs into a mess. The direction is poor and the film tries to distract you with shiny shots and loads of cleavage. It looks flashy but there is little to no substance behind it at any time. It feels empty and dull once you look at it as a film. But that’s not my biggest bug with this empty, hollow mess. The following paragraph contains MASSIVE SPOILERS. Proceed with caution. What should be the redeeming feature of the movie comes in the last half hour of it where the screenwriters pull out a huge double cross. Irving (Bale) and his partner in crime, Sydney (Adams) pull off a huge con on the very FBI that are chasing them. It is a genius stroke despite it being lifted directly from The Sting. The audience have no idea it’s just around the corner. I was genuinely surprised but the director doesn’t feel the same. When the double cross occurs, it does just that, occurs. No big huge surprise. A wasted opportunity on a marvellous piece of writing. No excuse. As you probably gathered, I was not a fan of this movie at all. If you were left in any doubt, I’ll bullet point a few more problems. •

The whole thing smacks of a load of good, not great ideas strung together by

two writers who didn’t collaborate. Just brought in their best ideas. •

Not to harsh the director ’s buzz or anything but sadly, throwing some great actors into scenes with barely nothing to do but look good in a welllit scene is not art. It’s pretentious and dull as f**k.

Moving the camera around a lot is not inventive. It is annoying and can lead to vomiting.

The real life story is far more interesting. Not to go into it, but the FBI conducted a sting over two decades which resulted in the convictions of about half a dozen members of Congress.

This story seemed to be thrown out the window in an excuse for Russell to get together with some mates, dress them in funny wigs, funnier clothes and have them SHOUT MOST OF THEIR DIALOGUE.

So yes. I plead with you to put this film away. It is a boring, overlong mess. And at the end of the day no matter how hard it tries, it is not Goodfellas. Do yourself a favour and screw this film and watch Goodfellas. You’ll thank me after it, trust me. American Hustle, kindly go fudge yourself… n

There’s a lot of mixed opinions when it comes to american Hustle. it’s a case of people either love it, or hate it. But, if you hated it, i’m here to tell you that you were wrong. David O. Russell is constantly raising the bar with each and every film that he makes, and American Hustle is no exception. Wonderfully written by himself and Eric Warren Singer, with an A-list cast and beautifully shot and costumed, this movie epitomises pretty much exactly what I thought the 70s were like. Down to the dance competition and everything. Tacky in the best way, full of sequins, open shirts, golden medallions, fur coats, hair rollers and slinky bodysuits, it really brings to life the gaudy atmosphere of the decade. The movie is loosely based on the real life FBI Abscam scandal, as pointed to at the beginning with the caption ‘some of this actually happened’. The basic gist of the movie: Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) is a seedy, self-important ‘business man’ who shortly into the film meets Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). They begin a relationship together, quickly falling in love. On the side of his drycleaning business Irv owns and operates a con business in which he retains a $5,000 dollar fee for people with bad credit to be considered for loans from ‘overseas investors’. He brings Sydney on

The Case for the Defence by emma Morris board who relishes in playing the part of English born Lady Edith Greensly, who has ‘connections overseas’ that can help people out if they really need it. With Edith pulling in client after client their lucrative, albeit rather illegal, business takes off and they’re able to move into nicer offices, and enjoy the finer things in life. Edith gets a little too cocky, bringing in undercover FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), who arrests Edith, and offers both immunity in exchange for their help in bringing in five bigger fish, and teaching Richie about conning. Their ploy is a sheik from the Middle East who is willing to invest in pretty much any project. Bring in the brilliant Jeremy Renner who really brings to life the kind, caring but naïve mayor of New Jersey, Carmine Polito. He wants to help Atlantic City back on its feet, and doesn’t mind dealing with some unsavoury characters in order to do so. Enter the mob, and a wonderful cameo by Robert De Niro. Also a great cameo by Louis C.K. as Richie’s boss whom he beats up at one point in the movie. We also get the privilege of meeting Irving’s wife Rosalyn played by my favourite, Jennifer Lawrence. Rosalyn is unstable, manipulative and very damaging at times. Irving wants to leave her, but doesn’t want to leave his adopted son with her. Irving describes her as ‘the Picasso of passive aggressive karate’, and continues by saying that she is the best con he’s ever known, conning him into staying with her. It’s a well-known fact about Russell’s movies that he gets his actors to improvise a lot of their scenes. Described by a critic as an ‘unruly improv party’, it is clear that he is missing the point of the film. Improv is what brings these characters to the forefront of the story. Reportedly Bale said to Russell that, "You realise that this is going to change the plot greatly down track." To which he responded, "Christian, I hate plots. I am all about characters, that’s it." While the film is well put together and runs through the various plot points and tangents, this is a film that is ultimately about its characters and for me that is what makes this movie such a triumph, and deserving of the nine Oscars it was nominated for. The fact that the actors improvised so much of the film is a real testament of the talent that each possesses. Bale as Irving is the perfect

blend of sleazy and charming. An odd combination, but he can charm pretty much anyone (bar Richie). His bad combover, plump belly and bad suits really adds to Irving’s slimy feel. Fun fact: Bale is well known for his method acting, and because of the slouch he gave Irving, he actually herniated a disc in his back which resulted in him losing three inches off his actual height. Sydney is confident, commanding and has both Irving and Richie utterly enthralled with her. Adams was aged for the film, and still manages to look like a total babe, and works those skin-tight clothes she wears. Some critics say that Russell is portraying women in narrowly sexualised ways, but Sydney is the smartest, the strongest, and in reality does most of the conning. She manages to be both sexy and totally badass. Cooper as Richie DiMaso is tightly wound, hyper at almost all times, and sometimes hopped up on cocaine. Like Sydney and Irving’s need for better lives, DiMaso just wants to further himself and his career. You’re never sure whether or not you hate him, and this is what makes Cooper ’s performance as this bipolar character worthy of the various award nominations he got for this role. Jennifer Lawrence as Rosalyn is probably my favourite part of the film. Any time she is onscreen she captures the attention of the audience. She is incredibly damaging to all around her, yet utterly naïve as to what she is doing. She observes so much more than she lets on, and manipulates people through what she knows. Underneath the bravado, she’s just scared of being alone. One of my favourite scenes is where Lawrence sings ‘Live and Let Die’ in her living room – for me, this emphasises her instability and indecision really helps bring the character to light, and while it may seem out of place, I think the film would be somewhat lacking without it. The plot of the movie is convoluted – it goes on tangents that can be confusing, but ultimately they work for the film. It’s deliberately mystifying at times, which may put some viewers off, but this just adds to the suspense. Overall, American Hustle is a testament to David O. Russell’s talent both as a writer and director, and the freedom he gives his actors is what really makes the characters in this film connect with each other. n

The Demise of Co. Wexford Community Forum Back L-R: Ger Mackey, Dave Ormonde, Brian Toomey, Lorcan Gaffney, Sean Quirke. Front L-R: Maria Nolan, Kevin Molloy, Lucy Medleycott, Pat Rath, John O’Brien

‘The olde order changeth making way for the new and God fulfils himself in many ways lest one good custom should corrupt the worlde.’ And so was the case on Thursday 15th January at the Enniscorthy Presentation Centre when the Executive of the County Community Forum met for the very last time to formally dissolve the popular organisation. Outgoing Chairperson Lucy Medlycott said that since it`s inception in 2002 the County Wexford Community Forum had advised and assisted most of the voluntary and community groups in the county and could boast of a membership of over 600 organisations. Those representing the community on the Executive of the Forum sat and played their part on a

wide variety of committees and boards including: ● We x f o r d Local Development ● Local Community Development Committee ● County Childcare Network ● Local Sports Partnership ● South East Drugs Task Force ● The Economic and Social Task Force ● Social Inclusion Measures Task Group ● Joint Policing Committees They gained a wealth of expertise and knowledge over the past 12/13 years which these representatives duly put to use in their own areas and for their own areas and districts. Lucy went on to say that since her election to the Chair in May 2013 she had striven to ‘invigorate the Community

Forum with a range of different initiatives and activities, as well as ensuring that effective communication permeated the organisation, while maintaining appropriate committee structures and due compliance’. In that period from May 2013- January 2015 the Executive met on 17 occasions. At the 2014 AGM – guest speaker Ms Rita Fagan delivered an impressive keynote speech to 68 attendees , highlighting the importance of community action and the relevance of using creativity to enhance and communicate your message, while inspiring the whole community. Communication and Committee Skills workshops were held in the four areas – Gorey, Enniscorthy, Wexford

and New Ross with two sessions in each rolled out to 28 participants. Social Media Workshops were held in each of the four areas with two sessions in each rolled out to 81 participants. Dr Fergus Heffernan delivered a very informative talk 'Managing your life by managing your mind' in the four areas delivered to 147 delighted attendees. Vo l u n t a r y A r t s a n d Community event held in Wexford Opera House with speakers from Voluntary Arts Ireland and various local artists, participants, patrons and practitioners, 35 attendees and three County Councillors. Social Inclusion Grants were distributed to the value of €5,600 to 16 groups across all four areas.

Local Government Alignment – the Executive oversaw the smooth transition from County Wexford Community Forum to Public Participation Network under the directives of the current ongoing Local Government reform. Before wrapping up and bringing the hammer down on t h e C o u n t y We x f o r d Community Forum Lucy thanked the members of the Executive and in particular the four Area Chairmen Pat Rath – Gorey, Maria Nolan – Enniscorthy, Lucy Medleycott – Wexford and Rosemary Butler – New Ross for their active participation and engagement over the years and acknowledged the tremendous work achieved by the members of this Executive as

well as each of the four area committees in what has undoubtedly been exceptionally challenging times. She paid tribute to Wexford County Council and its staff for the ongoing relentless support at all hours of the day and night and concluded with good wishes for the incoming PPN’s – ‘The secretariat of the PPN is now officially in place and we look forward to the rolling out of the new structure within the coming months. I would like to wish them the very best in their future tasks and I have every faith that they will keep a firm hand on the tiller going forward with the best intentions of the greater community and in particular those who are less well represented at heart.` – Maria Nolan

Connect Ireland and how it works Wexford County Council in association with Connect Ireland.com is holding an information night about Connect Ireland and how it works. Connect Ireland is a smart new idea to attract expanding companies and new jobs to Ireland. Many of the leading companies in the world have chosen their European operations to be in Ireland. They employ thousands of people, and they are here because Ireland is a fantastic place to do business. Now it’s time to tell all the SMALLER companies why they should locate here too so your help is needed.

Just think about all the people you know – your friends, business contacts and extended family around the world. Through your contacts, introduce the Connect Ireland team to a company that’s expanding internationally. The Connect Ireland team will manage your introduction from there, and explain why they should locate into Ireland. If they do, you will earn a financial reward for you or your preferred charity. The event is taking place this Thursday 5th February at 7pm in Wexford County Council, Carricklawn, Wexford. n

Salt grotto unveiled at Monart A next generation high-tech Alpine salt Grotto has been unveiled at Monart destination spa – the worldclass award winning, adultsonly, destination spa located just outside Enniscorthy. A brand new custom built and designed Natural Alpine Salt Grotto, which features a newly developed innovative micro-particle aerosol salt system, has been installed at the five-star Monart Destination Spa in County Wexford. The healing properties of salt infusion has been known for centuries; with many spas providing salt grotto experiences throughout the world. However the challenge with the conventional salt grotto experience is the production of salt molecules that are fine enough to travel deep into the lungs rather than remain just in the sinus and upper trachea. This next generation aerosol technology now in Monart was produced by leading international spa innovators and was sourced and customised for Monart through consultation and development between Michael and Liam Anthony Griffin and Klafs of Germany.

A brand new, custom-built and designed Natural Alpine Salt Grotto, which features a newly developed innovative micro-particle aerosol salt system, has been installed at Monart Destination Spa, Enniscorthy. Rugby international Gordon D’Arcy was on hand to launch the Grotto at the 5 star Spa.

Monart’s specially developed process produces tiny salt particles in the air from specially sourced Natural Alpine Salt that can now penetrate the entire respiratory tract from nose to sinuses, the throat area and on into the deepest recesses of the lungs; exerting the full salt infusion benefit throughout. The hi-tech Salt Grotto

provides a deep warming radiant heat coupled with correct salt inhalation which brings benefits to everyone; however it also improves and supports the treatment of several conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, cardiovascular problems, hypertension, skin inflammation, along with stress and exhaustion. Gordon D’Arcy was on

hand to launch the new state of the art Salt Grotto at Monart this week. “I’m delighted to see yet another new leading edge cabin opening in Monart’s Thermal Suite, I am a big fan of Monart and visit regularly because they are constantly looking for ways to enhance the benefits of the experience using new technology to deliver real results.” Gordon said. Commenting on the latest innovative addition to the 2,500 square foot Thermal Suite at Monart destination Spa, Liam Anthony Griffin said, “Michael Griffin and I are proud of the technology we identified and sourced to develop this Alpine Salt microparticle system which is hugely innovative and yet again world leading. Just under a year ago we opened the InfraRed-Pro cabin, which has already won an ‘innovation of the year’ award. We are serious about wellness and we invest in bringing world class technology and products to our guests, with our focus on sustaining our reputation as one of the top destination spas in the world.” For further details on Monart see Monart.ie n

Water Fluoridation Wexford County Council recently voted to end water fluoridation. Speaking following the unanimous backing of Wexford County Council for the party's motion on ending water fluoridation, Sinn Sinn Féin Féin councillor Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin said: “I’d like to welcome the unanimous backing of our motion calling on the government to end this state’s policy of what amounts to ‘medication without consent.’ This practice has been discontinued all across Europe, due to health, environmental, legal or ethical grounds. “There appears to be considerable scientific and medical evidence linking higher incidences of Alzheimers, depression and certain forms of cancer with water fluoridation. Also, the levels of all of these are lower in the 6 counties where the practice has been discontinued (of course there is also the longrunning, popular debate on claims that it makes people docile and whether it was or wasn’t used by both Stalin and the Nazis in the concentration camps!) “Co. Wexford now joins with 16 other county and city councils which have called on the government to discontinue the fluoridation of our water supply and bring us into line with best international practice.” n

ESPCA animal welfare news peT ApprOVeD

VET DIARY FOR FEB. with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month, Joe Kavanagh, looks at the intelligence of animals. The intelligence of animals never ceases to amaze me. They show it in so many 'everyday ways'. Some owners tell me of the subltle little things their pets do to almost let them know… that they know! My own dog Mac is an example… We often play a game of 'fetch' down the fields. It's got to be fairly challenging for him or else he's back 30 seconds later ready to go again. Today my son threw the stick across the mill race into a wood. To go straight across he'd have to go through the deepest part of the water and up the steepest bank along that stretch. So Mac assessed the situation, ran off in the opposite direction up our bank to a shallow spot in the channel but at a place where he knew he could get up the embankment easily too! Then on he raced back down the far bank and hey presto… collected the stick in his mouth and a pep in his step… he'd beaten the challenge! Yesterday we watched the hunt pass down the road by us . The hunt was over but they were still missing one hound… he'd got separated from the rest of them. One of the riders was down off his horse chatting to us and said… 'don't you worry that fella will land back to the 'meet' in no time, they always know their way back'… and sure enough within a few minutes we spotted the lone hound toddling his way back down the road to the waiting pack! As for the rider and his horse… well the rider being a fairly relaxed sort of fella jumped down off his horse and began throwing the rugby ball with my son. The horse must have taken offence as he began walking back up the yard onto the road, much to the dismay of the rider the horse broke into a trot (as the rider broke into a sweat) and landed back up the road to his own horse trailer and waited for the red faced rider/runner trotting after him. He too knew exactly where to go and how to get home! All these instances happened within 24 hours and just got me thinking how little we really know of their magnitude and potential. While waiting at the airport a few weeks ago I picked up a book where the author claimed his dog knew more than 1,000 words! The jist of it I think (coz I didn't buy the book) is the owner would ask him go fetch the bowl and the dog would go get it. He stepped it up asking him to bring little more obscure things like a pen and sure enough he'd land back with one (maybe wrecked the office getting it – bit like me sometimes!!) but again and again he'd turn up with the item requested. So the next time you think your pet is reading your mind… chances are... so be careful of your thoughts! If they were to give us a few lessons on how to live I'm sure it would begin with trust… Trust in the better side of people and life. Trust is something they give us everyday. They 'walk the talk' as the yanks would say. Allowing nature and her kin to educate us just a little every day will help us to live a simplier and more happy-go-lucky life. Allow your little one guide you a little today and see where it leads you… hey maybe to our door! n

recent media reports have confirmed what we in rescue are all too aware of, our dog population has increased and the number of unwanted pets is out of control. One media source estimated that a fifth of all dog owners allow their pet to produce a litter, with many of these unwanted and unplanned. It is very difficult nowadays to find good homes. There are simply too many dogs bred for the amount of good homes out there. Spay or neuter your pet. It is better for their health and is a relatively straight forward procedure. Consult your local vet who will be more than happy to advise you. If you cannot afford the whole amount in one week, put away a small some of money each week and it will soon add up. In the long run, a litter of pups will cost far more. If you are really struggling financially, we may be able to assist with some of the cost. Please email enniscorthyspca@mail.com or talk to your local vet for contact info. n

Lauryn’s Assistance Dog Just before Christmas young lauryn Tracy from oulart, who had been told she would never be able to walk, took her first steps with the help of her new assistance dog, Graham. Lauryn and Graham were trained to walk with each other during a week-long stay at the Dogs for the Disabled HQ in Cork. Lauryn, who suffers from cerebral palsy, can now bear her own weight with Graham at her side to ensure she maintains her balance. Our photo shows Lauryn and Graham with Lauryn’s dad, Gavin, and Irish soccer legend Paul McGrath. n

Can you help?

Ibar carty has opened up his vast photo archives to the Slaney News. In this 43rd of a series, Ibar shares more photos taken in the enniscorthy area over 30 years ago. If you can supply the names of any of the people featured in these photos, Ibar and the Slaney News would be delighted to hear from you. please email the names to: slaneynews@gmail.com. thank you.

Ibar would love to get some information on the above photo. It was taken around the 1920s in Enniscorthy district. A very interesting picture of a funeral of a possible civil war victim.

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond in ordinary jobs and indeed those of us who have no jobs. Smaller towns like Enniscorthy are still finding it extremely difficult to see these green shoots of recovery. It’s a big challenge for those in power and they know that delivery is expected. The next few months will be very interesting indeed.

View from the Hill grEEk ElEction The people of Greece in the recent election rejected the mainstream parties and put into government a party which is of the far left and totally opposed to the policies of austerity followed by previous governments. This is a reaction from the electorate to the years of hardship imposed, principally by the infamous Troika, which have severely cut living standards for most people in that country. It will be interesting to see how the rest of Europe responds to effectively being told where to get off to by this new Greek government. We in

Ireland will pay particular attention to what the outcome will be. I have no doubt that all political parties here are keeping a close eye on events. It would be a mistake to think that the Irish electorate, come 2016, will automatically do something similar. We have a very politically sophisticated public in this country who will be able to differentiate between a dream and reality. Having said that, the government parties in particular will have to ensure that the slow recovery which is undoubtedly taking hold starts to find its way down to those of us slogging away

tribunalS The Flood/Mahon Tribunal which cost us taxpayers €159m seems to have got something remarkably wrong. In recent times the Tribunal has had to withdraw findings of wrongdoing which it previously had made against such people as George Redmond, Ray Burke and many others. This is a result of a Supreme Court ruling that the Tribunal withheld vital evidence when dealing with the people concerned. The Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, has deemed that this Tribunal acted inappropriately, at the very least. It now appears that this entire farce which ran for 15 long years and made millionaires out of a pile of our bewigged friends was all for nothing. What I want to know is: “When will these millionaire barristers be asked to return

the millions in fees we paid them for this job.” If a tradesman does a job which fails he has to either do it again or make a refund or if an unemployed person is overpaid from social welfare they have to repay it. So now let’s see the demands for return of fees to the Learned Ones. Wishful thinking , no doubt. 20% DEpoSit The proposal by the Central Bank that those wishing to purchase a house should put up a 20% deposit is far too severe. Young couples in particular, trying to start out in life, will find it totally impossible to meet this demand. Any half decent house in Enniscorthy or similar sized town is going to cost €130,000 plus which will require a deposit of €26,000. That’s not to mention the other costs such as legal, trying to furnish it, etc. Only people with jobs which pay hundreds of thousands a year could come up with a scheme such as this. Too much I say. As we go to press with this column this is not yet finalised. Hopefully common sense will prevail here and we will see a climbdown on this proposal.

aEr linguS As this column is being prepared it looks that our national airline Aer Lingus is to be sold off to a major airlines g ro u p o f w h i c h B r i t i s h Airways and Spanish Iberia are major parts. As a result of this proposed sale, this country may lose its national airline. This would be a national shame. Most Irish people are very proud of our airline and in my opinion would object strongly to any outside party having control of it. On top of this there will be about 1,200 jobs lost if this takeover goes through. The principal decision makers with regard to this proposed sale will be the government which has a 25% shareholding and Ryanair which has 29%. No one else has enough influence to stop this sale. A worrying feature of this entire deal is that if the takeover goes ahead the half dozen people at the top of the airline, some of them who have only been there a wet day, will divide €30m between them. Hopefully that incentive will not persuade those advising the shareholders as to what decision should be made.

Supporting EnniScorthy As mentioned in previous columns the general economy of this country seems to be improving. The big difficulty for smaller towns like Enniscorthy is the length of time it takes for the uplift to reach us. However, we can all play our part in this recovery by, insofar as is possible, supporting the frontline of economic activity which is our retail and catering sectors. Without a strong retail and service dimension any town is lost. The numbers of jobs it provides far exceeds anything else in the area. Whether we are going for a night out or thinking about buying some garden equipment or materials for home improvement or indeed a new suit let’s think Enniscorthy first. We must all play our part in lifting our own areas out of recession. This applies equally to the villages in the district, many of which have excellent restaurants and retail outlets. The recovery begins with us and before we start blaming everybody else, although it’s hard not to point fingers sometimes, let’s play our own part in the recovery. n Words by: “View from the Hill” Vinegar Hill pic by: Joseph Doyle

Enniscorthy’s U-15’s nail Naas at the start of the year Enniscorthy's u-15s made the away trip to play naas in the leinster league and suffered a 24-7 defeat. to have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages of this league Enniscorthy needed to avenge that defeat when the sides met for the return fixture in Enniscorthy on 24th January. The first half was a close affair with both defences on top throughout and only one score registered in the opening 25 minutes – a penalty scored by Naas from in front of the posts. That looked like being the only score of an evenly contested half until a quickly taken tap penalty by Enniscorthy ten metres out was fed to Niall Parker who muscled his way over the tryline to put Enniscorthy ahead 5-3 at half time.

Enniscorthy were caught napping at the beginning of the second half as a clever chip over Enniscorthy's defence by Naas' inside centre was collected by the kicker who scored to give Naas an 8-5 lead. The home side bounced backed brilliantly two minutes later with the best move of the match beginning in midfield and the ball being fed through the hands of backs and forwards to reach centre Conor Nolan who did what he has been doing all season – eluding would-be tacklers on his way to the tryline and with the successful conversion by Fiachra Hourihane the home side now led 12-8. Enniscorthy were now dominating the game and looked like stretching their lead but an unfortunate defensive error on 20 minutes fol-

lowing a hopeful kick in behind Enniscorthy's defence led to a simple try for Naas which they converted and then just three minutes later they scored another penalty from 30 metres to establish an unlikely 18-12 lead against the run of play. With the Naas defence looking as solid as ever it was going to take something special for Enniscorthy to rescue the match and thankfully star forward Niall Parker produced a trademark try with just two minutes left on the clock. He got possession in midfield following another good combination of passes and showed his speed as well as his power in a successful burst for the tryline. A pressure kick followed for Fiachra Hourihane which he successfully slotted through the posts to give Enniscorthy

a deserved one point victory on a scoreline of 19-18. The Enniscorthy team has now completed its Leinster League run undefeated at home all season and if Gorey manage to defeat Naas in the last match in this group Enniscorthy will qualify for the Leinster semi-finals. caroline gets motoring morgan cars come to camolin by Caroline Kidd

kirwan’s of camolin has been awarded a prestigious morgan dealership for ireland, currently the only one in the country. the occasion was marked with an official launch last month at kirwan’s premises on camolin’s main Street. The Morgan Motor Company based in Malvern, UK, has been making these bespoke sports cars by hand for over a hundred years. A Morgan is a car with a very unique, niche market but it’s a car that Donal Kirwan is very happy to sell from his Camolin showroom. “I’ve always had an interest in Morgan cars. It’s a family owned business and has been for a hundred years and their ethics and values are very similar to our own,” says Donal. The launch at Kirwan’s revealed a lively Morgan scene in Ireland, with many enthusiasts and collectors defying the January cold to drive to the event and display their cars outside. Also in attendance was Mark Ledington of Morgan Motor Company, who flew into Ireland that morning to help to officially launch the new dealership. Speaking at the event, he said how delighted Morgan were to have a representation in Ireland at Kirwan’s, “for hopefully decades to come”. “At Morgan we choose our dealers carefully and we do not appoint dealers for volume sales,” said Mark. “We were impressed with the attention to detail and level of customer service at Kirwan’s. It’s a long running family busi-

SkoDa SKODA’s Octavia 4x4 range is more affordable than ever thanks to the addition of a Hatchback version, which starts at just €27,995. The new ŠKODA Fabia has won the prestigious What Car? Car of the Year 2015 award, at a glittering ceremony in London, having also been named ‘Best Small Car’, while the ŠKODA Octavia has been named ‘Best Family Car’. auDi Audi Ireland has announced a 15.5% year-on-year increase in sales for 2014. ness and a good match for us,” he added. Kirwan’s are selling the full portfolio of Morgan cars. The event was an opportunity to get up close to some beautiful samples of some of the range, including the Morgan Plus 4 and a modern take on the iconic Morgan 3 Wheeler. Donal says a Morgan 3 Wheeler will sell from roughly €42,000, a Morgan 4/4 will sell from roughly €52,995 and a Morgan Plus 4 from around €60,000, all depending on the level of specification. For that you get a true sports car. A Morgan is light, fast and looks like nothing else on the road, with a distinct vintage style exterior, but with a modern drivetrain and underpinnings. Be in no doubt - in a Morgan you will turn heads. The Morgan Plus 4 in Kirwan’s weighs less than a

tonne at 927kg, has a 2.0 litre petrol engine producing 154bhp, a top speed of 189km/h and will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds. CO2 emissions are 164g/km and the manufacturer quotes 40mpg for fuel economy. For comparison, the Volkswagen Golf GTI, one of the current crop of hot hatches, weighs 1351kg, also has a 2.0 litre petrol engine but it produces 220bhp with the aid of a turbocharger, has a top speed of 246km/h and will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds. CO2 emissions are 139g/km and the manufacturer quotes 47mpg for fuel economy. But that’s comparing apples to oranges. The Morgan is an entirely different beast offering a much more basic and visceral driving experience that’s not just about out-

right speed. The Golf GTI is powerful and loaded with tech – but you drive a Morgan, it doesn’t drive you. Each car is handbuilt to the highest standards of craftsmanship and Morgan builds just 1,300 cars each year at its factory in Malvern. Morgan will tailor your car exactly to your specification with a range of options and upgrades available, from the paint colour and upholstery, to even the piping on the carpets! Donal says these cars are “real fun to drive” and we can believe him. While many owners just use them for six months of the year, some will drive them all year round. It’s not for everyone but in a world of mass produced identikit cars, there’s something special about a Morgan. n

SEat SEAT Ireland has announced significant year on year sales growth having amassed 2,419 vehicle registrations in 2014. Downstairs on stage were local band Elemeno who did their usual full cover set. They were followed by what I can only describe as two of Ireland’s best rappers. Rob

Kelly did his set which featured Jack the Ripper, Sharon Curley and Georgie Burgess. He was then joined by Enniscorthy’s own Podge Dwyer who ripped Benedicts out of it with his set, finishing with Demons II, and including Remember You dueting with Sinead Haze. Podge also did a song which he co-wrote for Childline with Pa Doyle called The Rise which is not yet recorded. It was a great night for two good causes with a lot of money being raised. Roll on number 4 in this annual event. Well done to everyone involved.

We are holding our cystic Fibrosis event this year at the riverside park hotel, Enniscorthy, on the 21st of april 2015. Enniscorthy has got a huge amount of unsigned talent on its doorstep. on thursday 29th January Enniscorthy musician and front man with the gentlemen callers, bryan Steacy, held one of his series of open mic nights upstairs in holohan’s bar. The crowd was relatively small but enthusiastic. First up was Sinead Haze who is a great singer and has a bright future in the music business. She sang three songs from her unnamed ep and then she did a duet with local rapper Podge Dwyer called Remember You. She later did an excellent cover of a Britney Spears’ song among others. Well done Sinead. Next up was a guy who loves cats called Bubbles from the trailer park – he had us all in stitches, actually it was Jamie T Murphy doing his stand-up. It was a great night with some great songs and comedy. Well done Bryan and all involved. – Joseph Doyle

Ferrycarrig Five Mile Road Race Fundraiser Success neighbours, friends and top athletes alike embraced a fit start to the new year when they gathered at the Wexford youths F.c. grounds for the third annual Árachas Ferrycarrig Five mile road race. Popular for its fast course and community spirit, the event run as a Crossabeg-Ballymurn Community Centre fundraiser in conjunction with St. Killian’s AC, Crossabeg, is now a firm fixture on the Athletics Ireland calendar and attracted support from clubs across the country as well as a strong local showing. Dublin’s Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrocks A.C. proved self-discipline over the Christmas period pays off when he was first to cross the line for the second year in a row, completing the course in a recordbreaking time of 23:58. “I’ve done a fair few races over Christmas just to keep the discipline up”, the runner admitted. “It’s good to have some races on around this time of year because it’s easy to slip up”, he said. City Marathon, Seán Hehir, who completed the course with a time of 24:54. Bernard Roe and Daragh Bell, also of Raheny Shamrocks A.C., helped ensure a clean sweep for Dublin in the top four placings when they finished 3rd and 4th with times of 26:50 and 27:12 respectively. Wexford’s Jackie Carthy, of Kilmore A.C., meanwhile, was the first lady to cross the finish line and also set a new course record, coming in with a time of 29:37. Carthy is now gearing up to take part in masters crosscountry championships this coming weekend, while winner Clohisey has his sights

firmly set on completing the Rotterdam Marathon in April. Fortunately, the rain and wind which featured on race day 2014 held off this year to make for excellent running conditions on the popular looped route which follows in an anti-clockwise direction from the complex. “Last year was just a washout”, Carthy said, adding “whereas this year you had ideal conditions for running. There was no wind, no rain and it’s a lovely course”. This year’s race also saw the i n t ro d u c t i o n o f Á r a c h a s Insurances as headline sponsors, as well as the addition of a new corporate challenge

competition which was won by a team from Delaware Life. A sense of community spirit shines through at the event, with participants coming together to enjoy warm drinks and food in the Wexford Youths F.C. complex following the race. Local man Conor Shovlin, who appeared in last year’s hit RTÉ TV show ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’, finished the race with a time of 34:25. He said he enjoys the positive atmosphere at the race which helps motivate him to return to sporting activity after Christmas. “It’s great, you see people you haven’t seen in a while

and you know the roads around too”, he said. Participant Niall Reck was similarly full of praise for the event. “The weather was brilliant, I’ve done harder ones and I train on harder hills so this is a great one”, he said. Bon Voyage Colum on monday 26th January Enniscorthy Drama bade farewell to chairman, Director, founding committee member, actor, colleague and friend – colum coomey who is leaving Enniscorthy to head off into the wild blue yonder. Colum first came to Enniscorthy from his native Cork over almost 4 years ago to work as Personal Assistant to Chief Whip and Minister M r. P a u l K e h o e a t h i s

Constituency Office at lower Weafer Street. A keen thespian, Colum has acted in and directed a number of plays and has written a play that was short listed for an RTE PJ O’Connor Radio Awards in 2013. On his arrival in Enniscorthy Colum immediately showed his interest in the Arts and became the driving force behind the re-establishing of a Drama Group in the town several years after the

first very successful Enniscorthy Group had disbanded. Colum became Chairman of the new group in May 2013 and set about putting Enniscorthy back on the theatrical map directing our very first play JM Synge’s A Tinkers Wedding, this was followed by Ritual For Dolls directed by Siobhan Duggan which we took on the One Act Circuit in 2013. Last year the group produced 2 summer plays – the

hilarious Tom, Dick & Harry again directed by Colum who also played one of the characters Boris a Russian gangster and Glenngarry Glen Ross directed by Jamie Murphy. In November Colum directed James McLure’s Pvt. Wars and took it on the One Act circuit to great acclaim. Colum has also performed with Wexford Drama Group, Gorey Little Theatre and New Line Theatre. Colum is heading off on his travels taking in India, Australia and New Zealand and it is unlikely that he will be back again to Enniscorthy. On behalf of the Drama Group

the Vice Chairman Liam Doyle made a presentation to Colum of the Enniscorthy tie pin as an expression of thanks for all the work he has done for drama and culture in the town. We wanted to get Colum something light enough to carry with him and something profound enough to remember us with and the Enniscorthy tie pin designed by Stephen Bourke of Bourke’s Jewellers, Enniscorthy fitted the bill perfectly, depicting the town`s most famous icons – St. Senan, Vinegar Hill, the Castle and the Pike. Colum Coomey will be a

loss not just to Enniscorthy drama but to the town itself – he is talented, committed and active and never asks ‘who is going to do that’ he just ups and does it himself – no job is too big or too small for Colum – he is of a rare bred and on behalf of Enniscorthy Drama Group I would like to publicly thank him for re-introducing drama to the town and wish him well on his around the world journey and ask only that he remembers his friends in Enniscorthy when he is rich and famous and on the red carpet! – Maria Nolan, PRO

Dave to star in new movie Brooklyn movie rave reviews Dave Bresnahan

irish-american actor David bresnahan, who has strong Wexford connections with some of his relations living in gorey, will have a major supporting role in the international film famine, set in the 1800s in ireland. Dave says he is honored to play the role of an Irish Catholic priest in the film which tells the story of the devastation that took place in Ireland because of the famine of 1847. “I am happy to be a part

of a project that will show the true heartache and immense loss of life caused by the Irish famine, unlike others who are endeavouring to turn this story into a subject of comedy, which news stories have recently detailed in the Irish news media. The Irish famine is nothing to laugh at, and I am proud to be a part of this historic film,” said Bresnahan. The movie Famine will be directed by Omer Sarikaya,

who is also the screenwriter. Famine is based on the true story of how Turkey was the only country to come to the aid of Ireland during the famine of 1845-47. It depicts the devastation and tragic loss of life through a story of love and jealousy. Filming will take place in Ireland, England, and in Turkey in the summer of 2015. It is tentatively scheduled for release in 2016. Information about the film, cast, and crew can be found at http://www.imdb. com/title/tt3529820. There are presently an estimated 50 million IrishAmericans, many of whom come from families who came to America to escape the devastation of the famines in Ireland during the 1800s. Bresnahan has cousins in Gorey who he stays in contact with and he continues to visit them with his own family as often as possible. He currently lives with his wife and four children in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area. Dave’s detailed biography can be found at http://www.IMDb.me/davebresnahan. n

the irish film Brooklyn which was memorably made in Enniscorthy last year has earned rave reviews at its initial screening at teh f am o us Sundance F ilm Festival in the u.S. based on colm tóibín’s bestselling novel, Brooklyn tells the story of a young irish woman who moves to brooklyn to start a new life. The film is directed by Irish man John Crowley who is best known for his movie Intermission, and stars the wonderful Saoirse Ronan,

Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen as well as two of Brtain’s finest – Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters. The Hollywood Reporter in its review described the film as “beautiful and moving” and continued, “Classily and classically crafted in the best sense by director John Crowley and screenwriter Nick Hornby, this superbly acted romantic drama is set in the early 1950s and provides the feeling of being lifted into a different world altogether, so transporting is

the film’s sense of time and place and social mores.” Not only has it proved a critical success at Sundance but commercially it has been reported that the film has just been acquired for distribution by Fox Searchlight for $9 million – one of the biggest deals at this year’s festival. A release date has not yet been confirmed but all of Enniscorthy will be hoping it opens soon here in Ireland but unfortunately not in our own town as we no longer have a cinema! n

The self-publishing option

Retreat & Other Stories – she self published with Create Space – doing all of the work herself including calling to bookshops and asking if they would put her book on their shelves for a couple of weeks. The difference in cost between the two options is considerable but then so is the effort. However, for authors who do not want to wait for traditional Publishing Houses to either accept or reject their beloved manuscripts self publishing is definitely the way to go. Miriam has a third book coming out this year and will go down the self publishing road with it as well she told the Library gathering.

states that most, like herself, do it for the sheer love of writing. Well done to Miriam and to Jarlath Glynn and Enniscorthy Library and wonderful to see yet another local author about to publish her third book confirming once again that Wexford’s literary talent is alive and thriving. And FOCAL are delighted to announce that Miriam has promised to return to Enniscorthy to be part of our Programme of Events for the 2015 FOCAL Literary Festival on the last weekend in June in conjunction with the Enniscorthy Strawberry Fair. – Maria Nolan

a new voice among Wexford writers, miriam Walker, gave a most interesting and informative workshop at Enniscorthy library on thursday 15th January on the pros and cons of self publishing. A must for would be authors – and there were many in the Library audience. Miriam who lives in Wexford town, has written two books – The Cautious Man – which she self published using Original Writing who did most of the work for her such as designing the cover and distributing copies of her novel to bookshops in the Dublin area. Her second work – a novella titled The Holiday

Pleasant, friendly and easy to listen to Miriam says that we are in a ‘golden era’ of self publishing describing it as a welcome challenge, but she cautioned all potential authors in the attendance not to expect their lives to miraculously changed once they are published. There are so many writers and so many books coming on stream everyday making it an extremely competitive and almost impossible market, unless you get as lucky as E.L. James author of 50 Shades of Grey – which Miriam says she read for research purposes only, you will not make your fortune at writing. Very few writers are in it for the money, Miriam

Concealed in a school with windows and a roof Are hundreds of young adults who all love to goof From all different backgrounds and all different races Glasses, or no glasses, straight teeth or braces We are all so different and yet all the same We have something in common, we all play the game I'm not talking about Monopoly or Cluedo or Snap It's the journey of life of each girl and each chap It's a long road ahead and it sure is not easy There's good times and bad times and times you'll feel queazy You will have your ups and you will have your downs You will meet some jokers, you will meet some clowns There will be many weddings and funerals to attend Meeting new people making new friends. Focal Book Trailer Competition Focal, Wexford’s literary festival, in conjunction with Strawberry Films, has announced a new exciting competition which aims to get students in every national and secondary school in Wexford reaching for a book to read and then depicting its story and characters by developing their own unique book trailer. What is a book trailer? A book trailer is an advertisement for a book that can use still images, video, typography and voice over or any combination of these elements. A great book trailer will present the book's key events without giving too much of the storyline away. It will be bold and capture an audience’s attention from the very beginning, and by the end of the trailer it should have captured their curiosity to the extent that the viewer feels compelled to read the book. For examples to get your imaginations going, take a look at Strawberry Film’s book trailers: http://www.strawberryfilms.ie/ Strawberry Films are a boutique film production company that specialises in a wide variety of films including corporate events and advertising.
