However, September won’t be a good month for many of our fellow citizens. 27 of them will be losing their jobs with the upcoming closure of Caulfield’s SuperValu. All of us here in the Slaney News were very sorry to learn about the closure. We have always found the staff there to be very friendly and helpful, and we hope they all manage to find alternative employment in the weeks and months ahead. Results of the latest survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) were published on 5th Sept showing Enniscorthy ranking second cleanest out of 40 towns surveyed. The twice-per-year survey, conducted by An Taisce on behalf of IBAL, examined a wide range of sites and locations within each town to determine what level of litter existed, if any. The surveys began at the approach road speed-limit signs while typical sites examined in each town included town centre, main street, public car parks, bus / train station, school-grounds, residential areas, industrial estates, amenity areas, river walk/promenade and main approach routes. Well done to all involved in this success – Enniscorthy Municipal District and its cleaning staff, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns, etc. – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy Credit Union – a new era begins Enniscorthy Credit union Ltd. has announced the appointment of Joe Busher as manager in succession to Tony Ennis who is retiring after 19 years of service. Joe, a native of Wexford town and a member of the well known musical family, holds a Bachelor of Business Studies Degree from Waterford Institute of Technology and a First Class Honours Master's Degree in Operations Management from Dublin City U n i v e r s i t y. H e i s a l s o a Qualified Financial Advisor. Prior to his appointment, Joe was Manager of St. Dominic Credit Union in Waterford and also worked as Assistant Manager of Wexford Credit Union from 2007 to 2010, where he was responsible for accounting, compliance and training. Earlier in his career, Joe held a number of senior management posts in Equifax whose global operations include consumer and commercial credit data in the areas of customer services, project management and management information.

Founded in 1964, Enniscorthy Credit Union Ltd. is one of the largest and most successful credit unions in Ireland with responsibility for sub-offices in Ballymurn, Murrintown and Taghmon. It has assets of almost €160 million and reserves of over €21 million, while membership has grown from 12,859 in 1997, the year Tony Ennis was appointed Manager, to 29,412 today. During the same period savings has increased from €16 million to over €136 million, while the Credit Union's loan book has increased from over €12 million to just under €36 million. Despite having been established over 52 years ago, Enniscorthy Credit Union Ltd. has only had two previous managers. The first was Seamus Comerford, Rectory Road, who was appointed Manager in 1971 and held the post for the next 26 years until 1997 when Tony Ennis, a Board Director since 1977, took over. So Joe Busher becomes only the Credit Union's third Manager in its time honoured history. Established following a

public meeting in what was then Bennett's Hotel, Templeshannon, on Monday April 13th 1964, Enniscorthy Credit Union began offering credit union facilities from 7.30pm until 8.30pm each Friday night with accommodation being provided by the Governing Body of The Athenaeum in Castle Street. Affiliation to the Credit Union League of Ireland quickly followed and by December 1964, loan protection and life savings insurance was in place. By 1968, the Enniscorthy Credit Union had expanded to the point where it could no longer be accommodated in the Athenaeum and in November of that year the Credit Union moved across the road to a more spacious accommodation provided by the late Patrick Burke. S o m e y e a r s l a t e r, Enniscorthy Credit Union Ltd. took the ambitious step of purchasing its own premises at No.1 Market Square and after a major renovation programme, the new premises was officially opened by the then President of Ireland, Mr.

L-R: Seamus Comerford (first ever Enniscorthy Credit Union Manager), Pat O’Shea (Enniscorthy C.U. Chairman), Tony Ennis (outgoing Enniscorthy C.U. Manager) and Joe Busher (new Enniscorthy C.U. Manager).

Erskine Childers, in October 1973. Enniscorthy Credit Union continued to grow at an exponential rate making it necessary for the directors to purchase its present site in Abbey Square and construct a new state-of -

the-art premises where it now provides every possible service to members. Staff numbers have grown from 10 in 1997 to 40 today, a clear indication in itself of the magnificent work done by the founding members and its two Managers to date –

Seamus Comerford and Tony Ennis. Board of Directors, Board Oversight Committee, staff and members wish Tony health and happiness in his retirement, with his wife Gloria and twins Nancy and Joseph. n

Tech Tip

How to protect an ip address

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

You might not know it, but every time you go on the Internet you are identifiable to the rest of the world by a numeric address. This address is your Internet Protocol address. It’s a unique combination of numbers that identifies computers or devices from one another to allow them to communicate through the Internet. It might look like this: 173.223.120.165. There are many reasons why cybercriminals might want your IP address, three of the main reasons they’re on the hunt for IP addresses are to do the following: download illegal content under your ip address identity. They can download pirated movies, music, and videos – which would get you in trouble with your ISP. hunt down your location for larger-scale attacks: When given an IP address, an attacker can use geolocation technology to identify what region, city, or state you’re in. They use this to decide if your area is a worthy target for future attacks. directly attack your network: Criminals can not only use your IP address for larger-scale attacks, but also to directly target your network and launch a variety of assaults. One of the most popular is a DDoS attack (distributed denial-of-service). Cybercriminals can be awfully crafty to find your IP address. Here are some of the ways attackers drill down to see that magical number. Attackers can use social engineering to fool you into revealing your IP address. For example, they can find you through Skype and other instant messaging applications, which all use IP addresses to communicate. If you happen to chat with strangers using these apps, it’s important to note that they can see your IP address. Attackers can use a tool called Skype Resolver, where they can find your IP address when all they know is your username. After finding your IP address, attackers simply go to an IP address tracking website, such as whatismyipaddress.com, type it in, and then BAM – they have an idea of your location. how can i protect my ip address? You are typically assigned a dynamic (changes periodically) IP address by your ISP. However, you can sign up for a static (never changes) address if you wanted to run a web server from your house. Very good protection is a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This protects your data online by the use of encryption and proxy tunneling. It hides your IP address and redirects your traffic through a separate server, making it much safer for you online. They can be found online with monthly service charges, however the price might not be worth it for every home user. There are free VPN services out there, but don’t expect them to be fast enough for any streaming or gaming. Change privacy settings on instant messaging applications. Only allow direct connections from contacts and don’t accept calls or messages from people you don’t know. Changing your settings to private makes it harder to find your IP address because people who don’t know you cannot connect with you. Also update your antivirus regularly and add another security layer when possible. n

Great Leaving Cert results at Enniscorthy CBS

Fine Gael Td for wexford, minister paul Kehoe, has said that a €41,973 capital grant, announced in august, for Ferns diocesan youth Service (FdyS) will benefit young people in County wexford. “The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs has announced capital grants for 86 youth projects and organisations around the country and I am delighted that FDYS is to receive €41,973 in funding. This capital grant will really boost the services of FDYS… “The grant funding will go towards fitting out of premises (€16,975) and upgrade of existing facilities (€25,000). “Youth projects and organisations such as FDYS play a crucial role in supporting young people throughout the country. It is hugely important that the Government continues to acknowledge their work and provide funding so that they can maintain and in some cases expand their services. “We are working hard in government to ensure that our recovering economy is used in the right way. This means making sure that everyone benefits, particularly vulnerable people or those who need extra support.”

The best Leaving Cert results in 20 years were recorded last month at Enniscorthy CBS. Two students got over 600 points – Pierce Sinnott (615 points) and Fergal Grannell (605 points) – both very close to the maximum possible of 625. A third student (Colm Corcoran) secured 580 points and many others exceeded 500 points also. Fergal and Colm will be studying Pharmacy in Trinity College and Pierce will be enjoying ‘Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials’, also in Trinity. Congratulations to all the staff and students on their wonderful achievements. n

Theatrical fundraiser for Ichthyosis at The presentation Centre on Thursday 18th august, Enniscorthy drama Group, n o w i n i t s t h i r d y e a r, announced that it would be choosing a local charity to benefit from all of its future productions. ‘We are not about making money’, Chairman of EDG Liam Doyle told those gathered for the launch of the group’s play A Whistle in the Dark. ‘We are delighted to date with our success and with the massive support we have received from the Enniscorthy community and beyond and we have decided to put something back. So we decided to

bring local charities on board for each of our productions going forward… The people of Enniscorthy have been more than supportive of us and more than supportive of amateur drama so with each new play we will choose a charity to benefit from our success and your support’, he told the Presentation audience. Mary Kneafsey of Ichthyosis Ireland said that they were delighted to be the first charity chosen not just because they would benefit financially from the venture but because it would raise the awareness of this little known condition. Ichthyosis is a genetic skin disorder char-

acterised by dry scaling skin all over the body similar to the scales on a fish – hence the name which is an ancient Greek word for fish. There is no cure for the condition and there are many varying forms and degrees of it. Mary paid tribute to the local group for all their hard work getting the word out there and had a particular mention for local sufferer Conor Kenny and his family who are doing trojan work in County Wexford. Mary was profuse in her thanks to EDG and wished them well with their forthcoming production of A Whistle in the Dark.

‘A challenging play from a powerful playwright’, was how actor, director and long-time champion of amateur drama, Andy Doyle, described the work of Tom Murphy as he launched A Whistle in the Dark at The Presentation Centre. He complimented the group for the work they have been doing for drama in the town staging twelve productions since coming into existence three short years ago. For those who missed the Enniscorthy and Wexford town performances you can catch the play in Gorey Little Theatre on 9th September. – Maria Nolan

Templeshannon Renewal As part of the development of an Urban Renewal Plan for the Templeshannon area of Enniscorthy, Arup & Partners Ireland Ltd have been appointed as the Consultants to prepare the plan. Enniscorthy District Manager, Padraig O'Gorman, invites everybody with an interest in the area to attend an Open Meeting facilitated by Wexford County Council and the Consultants on Thursday, 15th September, 2016, in Treacy’s Hotel, Templeshannon, Enniscorthy at 6.00pm. The overall consultation objectives are to: n Raise awareness of what is intended to be achieved as part of the Urban Renewal Plan process and

provide clear and concise information to all stakeholders; n Provide relevant stakeholders with an opportunity to comment and positively influence the proposals; and n Invite feedback and ensure that the project team understands the views of consultees so that they can be considered during the regeneration process. The ultimate purpose of the open evening will be to provide local stakeholders with an opportunity to express their opinions, concerns and aspirations with regard to the Urban Renewal Plan for the Te m p l e s h a n n o n A re a o f Enniscorthy.

once again the good citizens of Enniscorthy gathered in numbers at St. mary’s Cemetery on the nearest Sunday to 15th august to remember and honour and celebrate the lives of those who went before us at our annual patron. Once again St. Mary`s was a cauldron of scents and a kaleidescope of colour as the Parish of St. Aidan`s paid their yearly tribute to the past and to those who made us what we are today. The preparations begin weeks before the August event with every family in the parish and beyond going to great lengths to clean and wash and generally adorn and decorate the final resting places of their near-

est and dearest. St. Mary’s is transformed into a heavenly Garden Centre for the day as fabulous floral tributes of every hue and form are paid to our dead. This lovely tradition, which is unique to Wexford and few other counties, allows us each year to focus on our dearly departed, it affords us the time and the space at least once every twelve months to think of and reflect on parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, colleagues, neighbours and friends who have all been part of our lives and meant something to us. It gives us the opportunity to keep our Cemetery beautiful as we restore, repair and reju-

venate family crypts with love and pride. It gives us a chance to come together as a community, to remember with fondness those gone to their eternal reward and to rekindle old friendships with those still living that we do not see as often as we would like, as people come from far and wide to be part of our annual graveyard celebration. The Patron of St. Mary`s brings us all together each year to laugh, to talk, to pray, to remember and to appreciate the generations of Enniscorthians who have formed us and celebrate the wonderful life of our town past and present..” – Maria Nolan

Saturday 8th oct 2016, 8.30pm tickets €20 available at https://wexfordartscentre.ie

19th August - 30th September

Mary Coughlan is one of our greatest female singers. At over ten albums she’s made the most mature, uncompromising, wholly personal and utterly universal music. She has taken the classic standards of jazz balladry and the recent gems of rock and Irish songwriting, shaken them and offered them up new, like jewels dripping from the deep, strewn on black velvet. Mary Coughlan, reuniting with long-time collaborator and producer Erik Visser, released her latest album ‘Scars on the Calendar’ in May 2015 with the lead single “Blood”.

Over the past 20 years, Rathnure Pantomime Society has never been an organisation to rest on its laurels. Nor has it ever been afraid to break the boundaries and change its output. Now in its 21st year, it is all change again. With the recent annual summer musical, “Heavens Above”, playing to packed houses in early July, and the unmissable Christmas Panto in December, the pen of producer John Reilly has gone into overdrive, and is gone in a completely different direction. So if you are a lover of live theatre, this show is for you. n

Girl on the Ledge is Rathnure Pantomime Society’s first foray into the drama world, with this original two-act play, written and produced by John Reilly. It is set in 1940's Ireland, and is a humorous portrayal of a young Irish family's dealings with everyday life in Ireland, filled with comedy, drama, and a history that comes back to haunt. Performed by a talented young cast, this production, with challenging roles, and a storyline to capture the heart with a twist, will be as intriguing as it will be captivating.

BIG JOE BONE

CROJAYN

This Cavan based five-piece Rhythm and Blues outfit have a lively up-tempo show that never fails to delight their audiences wherever they play. The band consists of a rich tapestry of talent, led upfront by the deep bluesy vocal tones and blistering Blues harp of Colin Kearns. The backbone of the band is the swinging rhythm section of Tom Meehan (Bass) and Gary Higgins (Percussion). On lead guitar Marty Trainor provides the melodic Blues solos. To put it simply ‘This is the Blues’.

Big Joe Bone" plays what he calls "BluesGrass" music, a mix of Delta Blues, Bluegrass, Oldtime, Gospel and Hillbilly music utilizing his raspy vocals, hard driving harmonica rhythms, sublime bottleneck slide guitar playing (on steel bodied resonator guitars) and lightning finger-picking skills on 5 string banjos.....all held together by a very heavy stomping boot! As well as playing songs from great Roots musicians like Son House, Dock Boggs, Mississippi Fred McDowell, the list goes on and on! he also plays his own songs, which fit right in to his eclectic set. "Big Joe Bone" is an act not to be missed!

Crojayn are a dynamic Alternative Blues-Rock four piece, a band from Cork City formed in 2013. Building on the success of their début eponymous six-track EP, Crojayn are now preparing to bring their "gutsy, raw and intuitive sound" right to the BBF. Crojayn have graced many a festival stage and venues outside of Cork including The Grand Social (Dublin), Bloody Streams (Dublin) and The KFest in 2015 (Kerry). "This ain't no school boy Blues band, Crojayn are the real deal" Crow Black Chicken

MIKE BROOKFIELD Mike Brookfield is currently based in Ireland. Right now, he's consolidating a line-up that can carry the turbo-powered dynamics of a house-style that incorporates the emotional overload of the early Delta Blues pickers and the pyrotechnic flash of the modern amped-up generation. It's not simply about fretboard technique with Brookfield, an accomplished songwriter who knows how to turn out a melody that hits deep. It's all about emotion, telling a story and connecting. It's the Blues. "Mike Brookfield is a virtuoso blues rocker...with a particular ability to craft hook-laden big blues ballads ...what he can do with his Stratocaster, is bloody impressive!” Blues Matters Magazine

PAULA GOMEZ Paula Gómez is a singer songwriter currently based in Madrid. Paula is influenced by the old Blues roots, her compositions were noted as highly original and their lyrical imagery ties together a strong melodic sensibility with the wide range of her vocal, it is this style combined with powerful delivery that is attracting attention among audiences worldwide. Paula has collaborated with many international well-known musicians and also has performed in many festivals and music venues such Clonakilty International Guitar Festival, Canadian music Week Festival (2014) and also supported the fantastic Irish singer Mary Black on her last tour 2015. Stephen Housden of the acclaimed Little River Band will

accompany Paula.

Crow Black Chicken have earned a reputation as one of Irelands top Blues acts. This power trio of Christy O Hanlon (Vocals, Guitar, Stephen McGrath (Bass) and Gev Barrett (Drums, backing vocals) combine elements of folk and hard rock with the Blues Rock of bands like Gov't Mule, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin to create their greasy Blues rock sound. "These guys do the nasty Blues like the devil hisself was hurting and Rock like they'll skate come judgement day" Ray Wylie Hubbard. Crow Black Chicken began life as a Blues band, and have since evolved into some kind of musical Frankenstein, fusing Jazz, Blues, Punk, Folk and Rock to create something rather special. THE REMEDY CLUB 'The Remedy Club’ (formerly B & The Honeyboy) returns to the Blackstairs Blues Festival with a new batch of songs from their upcoming recording (release date tba). Building on the promise of their 2nd album, Forgotten Books, their new songs are a ‘delicious stew of Blues and Country, featuring gorgeous harmonies and nimble guitar playing’ (Jackie Hayden). A live act not to be missed!

KJ McEVOY KJ McEvoy – guitarist, singer and songwriter from The Remedy Club. McEvoy plays a unique blend of original Country & Blues music, exhibiting a lyrical depth in his own compositions, which, mixed with virtuoso guitar playing and passionate gritty vocals and a choice selection of covers ranging from Howlin’ Wolf to Steve Earle, make this gig a must see for anyone remotely interested in all things ‘Americana’.

Project Maths tuition and intensive courses The South East Learning Centre specializes in helping students of all abilities in Junior and Leaving Cert subjects. It is the only centre of its kind in Wexford Town and was established in 2004 by mathematician Kevin Breen. Its primary goal is to improve their students’ understanding, skills and ultimately their performance in examinations. A combination of small class size, attention to detail and an appreciation of subjects are key to achieving this.

–––––––––––––––– Maths and other subjects –––––––––––––––– The South East Learning Centre offers expert tuition in Mathematics, Irish, Chemistry, Biology, French, German, Accounting and Business Studies. All subjects are taught at all levels ranging from secondary 1st Year to 6th Year. Mathematics and Chemistry are also taught at Third Level. Students typically attend once a week per subject and the class duration is one hour. Experience shows that students who struggle in maths typically have one or more gaps in their knowledge of that subject. The majority of students who have issues with maths invariably point the finger at algebra as their stumbling block. Algebra underpins all aspects of maths and contains the rules for “doing maths”. Without sound algebraic skills, otherwise able students will not be able to answer maths questions put to them. The South East Learning Centre maths classes place algebra and logical problem solving methods firmly at the heart of the learning process.

––––––––– Project Maths and irish intensive courses ––––––––– Maths and Irish intensive courses are held in April and May. Both Leaving and Junior Cert maths intensive courses are split over two days covering Paper 1 and Paper 2 respectively. Caution! Intensive courses are not a silver bullet and have been known to have a distressing effect on students who leave everything until the last minute. Students who want assistance with any of our subjects are advised to seek help earlier rather than later.

––––––––––––––––––––––– Location ––––––––––––––––––––––– The South East Learning Centre is located at 3 Mary Street, Wexford Town. Classes take place from 4:30 to 9:30pm weekdays and all day Saturdays. It is owned and run by Kevin Breen. Kevin has over 26 years teaching maths at both second and third level in Ireland and Japan. Kevin holds a bachelor’s degree in maths and physics from Trinity College, Dublin, a master’s degree in applied mathematical science from Dublin City University, is a member of the Institute of Physics of Ireland and is a fluent Japanese speaker.

O n Tu e s d a y 2 3 r d A u g u s t , Enniscorthy town opened her doors, her streets and her arms to embrace a fifty-seven strong group of visitors from our `other Island` or even `the other Ireland` across the Pond – Newfoundland. Arriving at the Promenade by bus from New Ross at 10am, met by Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society clad in Irish Volunteer and Cumann na mBan uniforms, under leader Ray Murphy, who formed a Guard of Honour as they alighted and Chairman of the Enniscorthy Ireland/Newfoundland Connections, Tom Boland, performed the welcome address. Then they were led by Piper Liam Doyle to Abbey Square where the Proclamation was read by Rory O`Connor, the Tricolour raised by Mary Browne, Bridget Murphy and Edel Kelly in memory of the three women who raised it in 1916 over the Athenaeum – Una Brennan, Maire Comerford and Marion Stokes, the National Anthem was played followed by the Canadian Anthem for our visitors. Marching up Castle Hill on their way to the Athenaeum they were impressed by the Canadian flag flying high over our Norman Castle. At the Athenaeum they were treated to a 1916 Enniscorthy E a s t e r We e k P a g e a n t w i t h Enniscorthy Re-enactors portraying the leaders in Wexford – Seamus Doyle, Sean Etchingham, Peter Paul Galligan, Robert Brennan, Seamus Rafter, Michael de Lacy, Richard King, Una Brennan and May Moran. There are half-day courses and multi-part learning programmes on offer as well as one-to-one clinics where an expert will help you with a specific aspect of your business. Courses are run at different locations around County Wexford ensuring that the LEO’s reach stretches to every corner of the county. Journalist, author of `The Last Surrender` and Secretary of the Athenaeum Committee Helen Ashdown then gave a detailed account of all that happened in Enniscorthy and the Athenaeum during Easter week. Our visitors were visibly

moved by the experience and lavish in their praise of all the participants. From there it was on to Enniscorthy Castle where they were given the tour and had copious photos taken at the Brooklyn Museum. Many had not read the book or seen the film but have every intention of doing so when they return home knowing now that it was written by an Enniscorthy man about emigration and filmed in the town. Enniscorthy Municipal District Council hosted a Civic Reception at the Athenaeum at 12.30 and presentations were made by Chairman Oliver Walsh to Mayor of Torbay Ralph Tapper and by Chairman of Wexford County Council Paddy Kavanagh to Chairman of the

Newfoundland/Labrador/Ireland Connections Kyran Dwyer. Member of the National Executive Committee of the NLI Walter Kirwan gave the packed auditorium a brief outline of the amazing connections between the two Islands and looked forward to a bright future of culture, heritage and tourism between Newfoundland and the counties of the South East – Wexford, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny and South Tipperary. is a key goal for the Local Enterprise Office. Starting a business is a daunting challenge. The work of the Local Enterprise Office with the support of Wexford County Council aims to make that challenge a little easier for the people of Wexford by equipping them with the skills and confidence to run successful home-grown enterprises. Head of Enterprise at Wexford County Council is Tom Banville. “‘At Wexford Local Enterprise Office we offer a modern and diverse selection of courses that are relevant to running a business today” said Mr. Banville. “From social media marketing courses to how to tender successfully for government contracts and much more - it’s about helping entrepreneurs in Wexford to grow their businesses and compete successfully in their given fields, both nationally and internationally. As their businesses grow, more jobs are created for the people of Wexford and everybody benefits”. All the courses and clinics Chamber Vice Chair Maree Lyng, Chamber CEO Catriona Murphy, Fr. Odhran Furlong and Strawberry Queen Rebecca O`Connor and everyone else for attending and invited them to enjoy the refreshments and the rest of the day in the town. Following the Reception which was both a credit to our town and to our Council the Newfoundlanders headed to the 1798 Centre where they were hugely impressed with the tour and the visuals and then finally it was on to Vinegar Hill for the Grande Finale. Enniscorthy re-enactors had done a quick wardrobe change and were waiting for them in 1798 apparel. The visitors were armed with Pikes and marched to the summit of the Hill where they attacked the waiting Redcoats like many of their ancestors may have done before them. To say they attacked with relish would be an understatement – they attacked with the pride and passion and perhaps the gene memory of their forebearers – ah that redcoat can still, on sight, rouse to Rebellion those who have the slightest drop of Irish and particularly Wexford blood in them at all and these Newfoundlanders I can tell you have more than just a drop. They don’t like to be called Newfies and they will correct you if you call them Canadian but they have no problem at all if you mistake them for Irish! Enniscorthy’s last hurrah! As Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society performed the final Flag Raising Ceremony at Abbey Square on Saturday morning 27th August in glorious autumnal sunshine Chairman and members of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council came together to show their appreciation of the magnificent contribution the voluntary group under Ray Murphy has made to the town in this year of celebration and commemoration. Town Manager Padraig O`Gorman complimented the group saying that they had been involved in every com-

memorative event in the town in 2016, and were always a credit to themselves, their group and to those they represented, adding panache and pageantry to every occasion. He thanked the group for turning out every Saturday morning from June to the end of August to raise the Tricolour, read the Proclamation and sing the National Anthem, saying that it was a major commitment each Saturday morning and the re-enactors had carried out the duties without fail, hail, rain or shine. He then called on Enniscorthy Municipal District

Chairman Oliver Walsh and Re-enactment Chairman Ray Murphy to step forward and present Commemorative Pins to every member of EHRS as a small token of gratitude and appreciation from the Council and the town of Enniscorthy. Former Councillor, Sean Doyle, was called on to raise the flag, and the Proclamation was read by Margaret O’Neill, Jim Wilkinson, Megan and Cillian Murphy and the National Anthem played by piper Liam Doyle before all those present retired to the Riverside Park Hotel for refreshments. – Maria Nolan.

The four star Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club are once again investing and expanding with the construction of 22 new bedrooms as well as additional Bar facilities. Owner Colm Neville is managing this ambitious expansion that will see their hotel bedroom numbers increase from 78 to 100 rooms. The new bedrooms will consist of deluxe and family rooms as well as a couples-only floor and 2 junior suites overlooking Enniscorthy Town and Castle and comes only two years after opening their last expansion of 20 bedrooms and additional function room, being the Seamus Rafter Suite. In this development the Promenade Bar is receiving an extension and complete refurbishment also. The expansion of the Riverside Park Hotel comes off the back of two further significant investments Mr Neville has made in the hospitality industry in the recent past, h a v i n g w i t h h i s b ro t h e r Anthony, purchased the four star 110 bedroomed Portlaoise Heritage Hotel, which is currently undergoing a reinvestment transformation itself as well as having just celebrated a very busy first year trading in the popular newly refurbished Crown Bar in Wexford town.

The Riverside Park’s strategic development is currently orchestrated by Mr Neville himself stating, “These new luxurious rooms will be marketed to our valued existing and new customer audiences, be they leisure or business travellers as well as the local community. The inclusion of extra Family rooms is in response to the ever increasing demand from Families for rooms that can sleep two adults and up to 3 and 4 children in the one room and we are constantly under pressure for more of these rooms. Such rooms are not regularly available in Hotels traditionally and we are delighted to be providing more of them to add to the eight such rooms already in the hotel!” The hotel has seen strong growth in the tourism sector over the past two years due the turn in the economy, the growth of overseas visitors to the country in general, the release of the Brooklyn Movie in Enniscorthy and the promotion of our area from both Visit Wexford and Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce. The entire new extension will create an additional requirement for 8 new jobs at the property, bringing the total number of staff employed at The Riverside Park Hotel to 173

From local feedback the effect of the last expansion of 20 bedrooms was felt by businesses on the streets of Enniscorthy town from retailers and tourism suppliers alike and the hotel anticipates that this expansion, being an additional 30% more bedrooms, will equally benefit the town significantly by bringing new customers to everyone. The company received this nomination for its work in transforming technology services for Barretstown. Now in their 13th year, the awards recognise and cel-

ebrate the important contribution that CSR practices make to Irish economy and society. When it came to shortlisting applicants for the Excellence in Community category, the expert panel of judges looked at various factors, including the type of work done by the organisations, and the benefits and impact for their partner charity.

Remembering Seamus Doyle

VET DIARY FOR SEPT with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month Joe Kavanagh looks at ticks and fleas September's here, school's back, summer is slipping away and everyone is slipping back into a routine. As seasons come and go they bring their own magic and challenges. The autumnal air in the mornings is the reminder of cooler times ahead but the magic of the colours of the leaves on the trees gives a lift to our senses. The animals have to adapt to the changes too. Cats are what are known as 'long day' breeders i.e. as the days lengthen they come into heat and conversely as the days shorten they become less active in that department. So you probably won't hear the barnies of tom cats fighting so much over the coming weeks and months. Fleas on the other hand, being one of the oldest inhabitants of the earth, are still in full stride and you'll probably still have to treat for them right through the autumn as they'll hatch out if the weather is anyway mild at all. Also ticks have been a big problem over the last few years and they'll still be prevalent over the coming weeks. If you see a tick attached to your dog or cat the temptation is to either squeeze it or try pull it off... neither is the way to go usually because the head of the tick often remains in the skin and can create quite a severe localised reaction in that area. Dogs that roam through old pastures or on mountain treks are often more predisposed to them. Fortunately there are different preventative medicines that can be very effective both in dropper, and a new medicine in tablet form that has an extended action for up to 3 months, so you can enjoy the autumnal colours, magic and mountains with peace of mind that all's well. Ask at reception or any of the vets for further advice on the best one for your four-legged friend. n

A wonderful day of commemoration was held by the good people of Monaseed on Sunday 21st August as they came together to unveil a memorial stone to one of the 1916 Enniscorthy leaders, Seamus Doyle. One of the Doyles of Buckstown, the stone was unveiled by May Doyle, niece of Seamus, at the entrance to the lane where he was born. Organised by the Monaseed 1916 Committee under the leadership and guidance of Seamus Rath and MC`d by Colm Rath the event was a fantastic occasion with members of Enniscorthy’s re-enactment society, Carlow Flying Column, the Ould Brigade, Cumann Pici na hEireann and the Monageer 1916 Group all part of the marching columns behind the U.N. Colour Party. Canon Seamus De Val gave the large congregation an introduction to Seamus Doyle and briefly outlined his part in the happenings of Easter week and beyond. It was Seamus Doyle who received the orders direct from Padraig Pearse to rise and it was Seamus Doyle who refused to take the surrender from anyone else only Pearse and was then taken under armed guard with Sean Etchingham to Arbour Barracks to receive the hard written order from Pearse himself who told him to `hide the arms they will be needed later`. Anthony O’Neill was called on for a rendition of James Connolly

after which an emotional May Doyle unveiled the impressive stone. The commemorative party then moved on to the `98 Monument at Monaseed where a wreath was laid by Mick McClure in memory of Myles Byrne on behalf of Cumann Pici na hEireann and it was then on to the Celtic Cross at the Monaseed Memorial Hall which was being unveiled in memory of all those who died in the 1916 Rising. Fr. Donal Berney gave a great rendition of ‘The Foxcover Exile’ a tribute to Myles Byrne, Mary Ellen McClure recited `Mise Eire` followed by Canon Seamus De Val who continued his detailed historic account of the life and times of Seamus Doyle.

Michael D’Arcy TD and Councillor Joe Sullivan both congratulated the organisers and complimented them on a most excellent event prior to Councillor Pip Breen, Chairman of Gorey Municipal District Council, unveiling the Celtic Cross. Wreaths were then laid by George Doyle and Anne Sheeran, a Minute’s Silence was observed, the tricolour raised by May Doyle and the National Anthem played by bugler Anthony Nolan. Fabian Doyle, nephew of Seamus Doyle, was lavish in his thanks to all who attended and all who had anything to do with the commemoration especially chief organiser Seamus Rath. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy remembers the Roma Holocaust A little Roma girl imprisoned during World War II.

Enniscorthy Roma community members met on 2nd of August in Enniscorthy to commemorate Roma Holocaust Memorial Day and remember the estimated 500,000 Roma who were murdered by Nazis. The Roma Health Advocacy Project, funded by HSE Social Inclusion Community Healthcare Organisation Area 5 and managed by FDYS, hosted the event which heard from Roma young people, the Roma Health Advocate and the Dept of Justice and Equality. “It's important that we remember the genocide and the atrocities of the Second World War and to be vigilant against racism, right wing extremism and to combat any ideology of superiority. It's also important that the Roma Holocaust is given full recognition by the UN and other international bodies and is not just a footnote in the history books as it is at the moment.” said Alex Petrovics of Ferns Diocesan Youth Service (FDYS) Enniscorthy. Deaglán Ó Briain, representing the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD, and the Minister of State for Equality, David Stanton TD, stated that: “This is a solemn occasion and a painful one for those of you who have family memories

of persecution and of the genocide of your people. It is appropriate therefore that we stand in solidarity today with the Roma community who have found a new home in Ireland. We join with you in remembering the horrors that befell Roma people in Europe due to intolerance and racism and in remembering the lost generations. “Ireland has become a new home for so many people from all parts of the European Union and beyond, including Roma from central Europe and the Balkans. With our Irish history of migration, we understand instinctively what it is like to start a new life in a new country. That is not to say that we are without mistakes and problems. Or that we can be complacent. The Irish government is committed to ensuring that Ireland remains a welcoming and warm home for all the new communities, including Roma, who have made their home here and that racism and discrimina-

In particular, Mr O’Brian spoke about the consultation process for the new National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy and said to the Roma gathered at the event that “Your participation will ensure that our consultation is grounded in the reality of life for Roma people in Ireland”. The Roma National Anthem was played and a minute's silence was held. The event was attended by Enniscorthy’s Roma community, Enniscorthy Garda Siochana, HSE Social Inclusion Community Healthcare Organisation (Area 5), Barnardos, Wexford County C o u n c i l , We x f o rd L o c a l Development and other local voluntary and statutory agencies. n

View from the Hill suPervaLu The proposed closure of Caulfield’s SuperValu in Enniscorthy will be a disaster for many if it goes ahead. As this column is being written the story is that closure will take place at the end of September. The effect of this on a small town will be catastrophic from the point of view of the loss of jobs and wages which in the main go directly back into the town’s economy. There is talk of a management, or some other, buyout and let’s hope that this is more than a rumour. Apart from the direct effect on the employees, the loss of such a great facility in this location will have a huge impact on residents in the immediate area. Many of the customers of this store are elderly people from the sur-

rounding streets and will find it difficult to get to some of the other stores, most of which are located towards the top of the town. If a factory employing 27 people was closing we would have calls for a task force and all sorts of government action. But as usual the service industry, which employs more people in this country than any other sector, is left to sort itself out. For my own part I have been a customer of this store over many years and always found the staff most pleasant and helpful. The staff of SuperValu are its greatest asset, knowing most customers on first name terms and being totally aware of the requirements of these customers. It is also a very impor-

state of the toWn As the summer draws to a close we must once again raise our sun hats to those who keep our town looking so well all year around. While this is important all of the time, the tourist and visitor months are crucial to make a good impression. For years now the volunteers of the Tidy Towns organisation have played a major role in keeping Enniscorthy and surrounding area beautiful and deserve great credit for so doing. These people are the unsung heroes of every community and go about their, sometimes unpleasant , work quietly and without fuss. They deserve our thanks and appreciation. garda raids I thought I had seen and heard everything until recently. Some months ago the Gardai in Dublin carried out a raid on a suspected criminal’s abode in the early hours of the morning. The purpose of the raid was to carry out a search and possible arrest of a criminal well known to them. When the Gardai say that someone is well known to

“The proposed closure of Caulfield’s SuperValu in Enniscorthy will be a disaster for many…”

them I think we all understand what that means. As a result of the raid the suspect put in a complaint with the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission. His complaint was that the raid took place too early in the morning and had caused great disturbance to him and his family. Well I’m sure that when the Gardai concerned saw this that their immediate reaction was to say to him “Good luck with that one”. But no, that was not the outcome. The GSOC criticised the Gardai for the early morning raid and recommended that in future such raids be carried out at a reasonable hour. So now we have a situation where our forces of law and order have to almost give notice that a raid may take place at a reasonable hour and ask the target, “Will you be by any chance up at this time”.

Or better still send the suspect written notice of the raid a few days in advance and perhaps inform him of what they are looking for and request that he would kindly leave it out for them to prevent any disturbance while they are searching for it. What kind of country are we living in when a taxpayer-funded quango like the GSOC comes up with rulings like this. Methinks it’s time to make that body redundant. Pat hickey The treatment of Pat Hickey by the Brazilian Authorities is nothing short of a scandal. Hickey, whatever his faults, is at the time of writing this column an innocent man who is entitled to the dignity of every other citizen if placed under arrest. And before the experts tell us that this is how the Brazilians do things

let me say that it is not. They do not bring TV cameras with them when they are arresting their own citizens. The vile, naked hatred shown towards Hickey on social media such as facebook and twitter by those who, in some cases, probably never heard of him until now is nothing short of sickening. Also the silence of the Irish Government and organisations such as Amnesty and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties is surprising to say the least. One can’t help feeling that if you are not a darling of the left you are on your own if arrested abroad. Mr. Hickey is being released on house arrest and will face trial at some point in the future. The fact is that if he is guilty of something he has to pay the penalty but in the meantime is fully entitled to the presumption of innocence and to the support of the Irish Government and other human rights organisations. Weight Loss I’m trying to lose a bit of weight. The Missus was passing the bathroom the other day and saw me on the scales. I was sucking in my stomach. “Oh for heavens sake”, says she, “ That won’t help”. “Of course it does “, says I, “It’s how I see the numbers on the scales”. We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Caroline gets motoring honda jazz

rEviEW by carolinE KiDD the honda Jazz is the civic’s little brother and has built a name for itself as a versatile and dependable small car. an allnew Jazz arrived here late last year and the Jazz now shares a platform with the new hrv compact suv. In the metal, the Jazz is more like a mini-MPV than a supermini. The styling is not dissimilar from what has come before but has been smartened up in line with the other new models in the Honda range. Pick an eye-popping colour like red, yellow, orange or blue and you could go as far as saying that the Jazz is cool-looking! Where this car comes into its own is when you start to look at the interior space. The cabin is really spacious for a compact car and could comfortably house a small family with room for their cargo too. The legroom in the back really is something else and would shame some hatchbacks from the class above. The interior is also highly practical with Honda’s Magic Seats innovation as standard. This allows you to flip the seat cushions of the rear seats up to carry large or awkward objects. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you open the boot and that’s huge too! It’s 354 litres, which is Focus/Astra territory. Elsewhere the seats are soft and comfortable, and while there are stylish elements to the dash design, the look is more durable than plush. All the tech if you’re thinking that it’s time to upgrade to something that’s a bit more family friendly, this month i’ve included some tips for choosing an MPv.  check there’s a seat for everyone! Some compact MPVs are sold with just five seats, but larger ones may have seven. Seven seaters usually work by having five seats permanently in place with two fold away seats in the very back. For very large families, an eight or nine seater might be the only MPV that will do. There are some of these on the market but they tend to be derived from vans so you lose some of the car-like driving character of a smaller MPV. Some MPVs squeeze in seven seats within a reasonably small footprint but the extra two seats may only be suitable for children. think about adding driving aids. On larger MPVs, it’s worth checking the spec to see if equipment like parking sensors, reversing cameras and even autonomous parking systems are included, and if not it makes a lot of sense to add these as options if the budget allows. The larger the MPV, the more awkward it’s going to be to drive in tight situations like through town, at the school gates and around car parks. If you’re a parent you’re likely going to spend a lot of time doing

is in here so it feels modern. There is a touchscreen for controlling the radio, music and the Bluetooth connection, and that comes as standard on ES trim and above. There is only one engine available for the Jazz, a 1.3-litre petrol. A manual six speed gearbox comes as standard, with the choice of a CVT automatic gearbox. The engine is very frugal, returning up to 56mpg, and has enough power for the car. It’s not the most exciting or characterful engine. It does the job – but no more. It feels perky enough at low speeds around town but you have to wring it out to pick up speed quickly out on bigger roads. It certainly prefers a more sedate pace. The Jazz is not the speedy choice, but it’s actually a lovely, easy car to drive. It offers good

stability and comfort on longer journeys and on motorways. The car holds the road well and the steering gives decent feedback. There are three trim levels for the Irish market: SE, ES and EX. For the entry price of €17,640 you get a good level of standard equipment: air con, Bluetooth, city brake, cruise control, steering wheel mounted audio controls, auto lights and wipers, four electric windows, electric mirrors, and LED daytime running lights. Step up to ES for alloys, the Honda Connect system (touchscreen infotainment), front and rear parking sensors, and more safety tech like lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, forward collision warning, intelligent speed limiter, and high beam support.

10 Tips for Buying an MPV by caroline Kidd

this so think hard about how much space and how many seats you really need. check the seats for flexibility. Some MPVs feature seats in row 2 that can slide forward or back, and also recline. See how easy it is to fold the seats down and if they will fold down flat. Some MPVs even have a front passenger seat that can fold completely flat! check how easy it is to get in and out of the MPv. MPVs naturally sit a bit higher than a standard hatchback but some may have additional features to make getting in and out easier. For example, there are a few MPVs on the market with sliding doors. They don’t look very dynamic or sexy on a car but they are extremely practical for getting children and car seats in and out, especially in car parks where space is limited. If there are three rows of seats, check how easy it is to get into row 3. is there enough storage? MPVs

generally have lots of cubby holes but check to see if they are all in logical places and if they are genuinely useful. check for convenience features. Some MPVs will have pull-down picnic tables on the back of the front seats but these may be optional on some, or limited to higher trims. The children might appreciate 12-volt power sockets and USB ports to plug in their devices. Some MPVs will have these, some won’t. It’s important that the driver is happy too so if you do a lot of driving think about features like cruise control and even an automatic gearbox that will make sitting in traffic on the school run less draining. Other features worth considering: pull-down blinds on the rear windows, electric windows, and climate control (some cars will have separate controls and vents for rear passengers). Will it fit the child seats? Some MPVs will have three individual seats

With a starting price of €17,640, on paper the Jazz looks on the expensive side for a small car. But in reality this car is much more spacious than the likes of say a Fiesta or Corsa, and the car is well-equipped from base, so it’s actually very good value. This is an easy, comfortable car to live with, and though the engine lacks a bit of grunt, it is frugal. The Honda Jazz would prove to be a very practical companion for a variety of buyers, young or old. Model tested: Honda Jazz 1.3 i-VTEC ES Price: €19,590 (range starts at €17,640) Engine: 1.3-litre petrol Power: 101bhp 0-100km/h: 11.3 seconds Economy: 56.5mpg CO2 emissions: 116g/km Tax band: A4 (€200 per year). n in the middle row rather than just one bench. The number of Isofix child seat fixtures can vary from car to car. Bring the children and child seats to the dealer and see if everyone will fit comfortably before you buy! is the boot big enough? This is so important in a family car so check out the boot for yourself and bring the buggies and other stuff you regularly carry to see if the shape and size will work for you. Some of the more compact seven-seaters will be severely compromised on boot space when the two extra seats are in place, but in a five seat configuration they will have huge boots that can be easily stacked to the roof. Some larger sevenseaters will be less impacted in this regard and may be more suitable if you regularly carry seven passengers. go for a test drive. Bring the car for a test drive and see how it performs on the road. Is there adequate power? Consider how the car might perform with a full family on board and their luggage. You might need a bigger and more powerful engine. check the economy. As when buying any car, check the running costs for the vehicle before you buy to avoid any nasty surprises, specifically the miles per gallon and annual motor tax. n

The women who run this market sell teabrack, fresh garden veg, freerange eggs, cheesecakes, buns, homemade scones, etc. They don’t do gluten-free baking but all their produce is homebaked and the range changes from week to week. WiCkEr HOuSE i recently caught up with sarah Jane of top Wexford band Wicker house and posed some questions… do you ever get asked for songs you don't know? Yea we often get asked for songs we don't know, some people think we're a jukebox but the majority of people understand that we’re not gonna know every song. is there anything you can't leave the house without bringing to a gig?

For me… flat shoes, a full tummy, sweat bands… For Paul… his tuning key, headphones and business cards... For Alan he makes sure he has spare strings and spare plectrums and obviously we have to have all our gear with us... do you ever argue? Not really, we have the odd disagreement but no full-blown arguments... the lads know I'm the boss and what I say goes, so there’s no point in arguing with me, ha! – Joseph Doyle

NEigHBOurHOOD WAtCH st aidan’s community alert group (neighbourhood Watch) is looking for new members to join in their nightly patrol of the streets of enniscorthy. Set up three years ago the neighbourhood watch group was the brainchild of Hugo Kelly and Bernard O’Leary along with Frank O’Connor. The group has a few members but needs more members to patrol the area they cover which is Upper Weafer St, Saint Aidan’s Villlas, Bellefield Road, Ross Road, Moran Park, Duffry Gate. Speaking to Slaney News, Bernard O’Leary, Chairman, said it is vitally important that if you see suspicious activity at night to call Enniscorthy Garda Station 053-9242580 or 999 in emergency situations. He went on to advise extra vigilance

at night in winter and to keep an eye out for neighbours especially those on their own. Hugo Kelly added that it is vital if you are going away on holiday to let the neighbourhood watch know you’re going and don’t post it up on Facebook or Twitter. Bernard O’Leary finished by saying that the group has gone from strength to strength in their first three years and he would like to thank Grants Pharmacy, Paddy Kavanagh, Johnny Mythen, John O’Rourke, James Brown, Paul Kehoe, etc for their sponsorship. More information on this group can be got from Hugo Kelly on 087-7678045, Bernard O’Leary 085-1088163 and Frank O’Connor 087-1364512. – Joseph Doyle

Bygone Days Storytelling House, Oulart, has been running very successfully for 16 years. The house dates back to the 1700’s – a typical mud-walled thatched house of the era, fast disappearing from the Irish countryside. The roof has been consistently patched over the past 16 years but last December the group was forced to place a plastic cover on the roof as the rain is coming in strong in several places. If not properly thatched the house will eventually fall. The last occupant of the house was Paddy Mythen who died in 1992. After Paddy died his neighbour Jim Mythen bought the little thatch house and adjoining land. The house was in bad repair and was refurbished with the help of a FAS scheme under the supervision of John Dempsey and funding from WORD, for the bicentenary of 1798. John Dempsey is the Fear an Tí ever since. The little house has a wonderful atmosphere, no electricity, huge open fire with Fanners and Crane, half-door and a warm welcome. The storytelling runs on second Monday of the month 8pm to 11pm, refreshments served, no cover charge. There is a donation box for people to contribute if they so wish. No pressure is placed on anyone to perform, all welcome, a night of music, song, story and banter. Without Bygone Days and other similar houses a lot of people wouldn’t have contact outside their own homes especially in winter time, so it’s a lifeline to some. The group is holding a fundraising night in Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, on 25th September, and needs every possible person to come out that night to support its Thatching Fund. And to experience the atmosphere and unique setting of the house itself – the next session in Oulart is 12th September 8pm. n

A Night at the Dogs a massive crowd turned up to enniscorthy dog track on thursday 11th august and in late summer evening sunshine enjoyed a fabulous family fundraiser for Wexford gaa supporters club. With over sixty children from clubs around the county participating in mini games organised by the Coiste na nOg Committee under Chairman Bobby Goff, senior hurlers, camogie players, ladies footballers and the very beautiful Miss Wexford, Annmarie Blake, not to mention the dogs, this annual fundraiser has fast become a major attraction for adult and child alike and a resounding success for the Wexford Supporters Club. Chairman of the Supporters Club, Des Croke, thanked his organising committee under

main men Bill Mernagh and Jim Byrne, main sponsor Casey Concrete, all the sponsors of all the races, all who donated raffle prizes and prizes for Best Dress Supporter Competition, McCauley’s pharmacy for taking the photos, Enniscorthy Track and all who attended, saying that is was wonderful to see the level of support for Wexford GAA and all Wexford teams – male and female. All proceeds from the event, he said, would be chanelled towards the promotion, development and further enhancement of all our Wexford teams. He paid tribute to players like Lee Chin, Paul Morris, Eoin Moore, Eoin Conroy and others and all the ladies footballers who made themselves available to sign jerseys, hurls and teeshirts and have their photos

taken with all their little fans and had a special word for Miss Wexford, Annmarie Blake, who was a big hit with all the little princesses at the event. Mattie McGrath was the winner of the gate prize of a trip to the UK for car and four people kindly sponsored by Stenaline. Wexford Supporters Club was delighted with the response and would like to say a very genuine thank you to all for supporting us supporting them. – Maria Nolan Top: Paul Morris, Eoin Moore, Miss Wexford Annmarie Blake, Lee Chin and Eoin Conroy. Carmel Harrington does it again! carmel harrington, one of Wexford’s emerging authors, is no stranger to the irish literary scene and is now receiving global acclaim with her page-turning novels published worldwide and translated into at least eight different languages. her fourth novel the things i Should Have told you will be published by well known publishing house harper collins uk on 8th september, providing yet another success for carmel and for focal Wexford Literary festival. One of the founding members of Focal, Carmel now holds the position of Chair and has been an invaluable asset to both the Committee and the Festival over the past three years. Although only in its infancy, Wexford Literary Festival has already staged three very successful festivals largely due to Carmel’s expertise and her wealth of literary contacts including such names as Louise Phillips, Claudia Carroll, Rachel English, Denise Deegan, Paul O’Brien, Lorna Sixsmith, Lynnmarie Hulsman, Andrew Hughes, Paul O’Reilly, Ruth Long, Hazel Gaynor, Madeleine Keane, Carolann Copland, Joan Brady, Karen Power, Jax Miller, E. R. Murray, Claire Hennessy and Billy Roche who have all been part of our festival programme over the past three years. Carmel has also been responsible for bringing American literary agent Tracy Brennan to our festivals which has resulted in three more Irish writers, two of them from Wexford, signing up with the Trace Literary Agency – Cat Hogan and Caroline Busher. Carmel was also the creative genius behind Focal’s own book launched in 2015 – From Wexford With Love an anthology of travel stories all with Wexford connections and dedicated to all who suffer with Alzheimers Every Time A Bell Rings, Carmel’s third novel was inspired by that lovely, old Hollywood Christmas fairytale It’s a Wonderful Life – and indeed Carmel Harrington’s own life is a wonderful life with a fairytale aspect to it. Working for a Dublin company Carmel O’Grady was instructed to take her long-overdue three weeks leave or lose it, so she decided, as you do, to hire an apartment in Florida and write a book – and that’s exactly what she did!

ARTS SNIPPETS… WExFORD FESTIvAL OPERA For more information or to download the Festival brochure and listen to samples of the repertoire, visit www.wexfordopera.com ExHIBITION AT WExFORD ARTS CENTRE Wexford Arts Centre and Cow House Studios are pleased to present ‘I like to eat with my hands’, a group exhibition of video and mixed media works. The exhibition will run from 29th August to 5th October at Wexford Arts Centre. ‘I like to eat with my hands’ is the outcome of an artistic residency involving five contemporary, international artists – Taro Furukata and Ann Maria Healy, dancer/choreographer Claire Huber, and writer/artist duo KVM – Ju Hyun Lee and Ludovic Burel. For a period of eight-weeks in autumn last year, they re-located their practices to the deeply rural environment of Cow House Studios, situated on a working farm in the foothills of the Blackstairs Mountains, County Wexford. Curated by RGKSKSRG (the paired, curatorial practice of Rachael Gilbourne and Kate Strain). Visitors are advised that this exhibition contains some explicit imagery and parental discretion is advised.

Beyond Graces Rainbow was written in those three life-defining weeks and Carmel returned home with her creation asking her nearest and dearest what they thought. And when they all thought it was a great story Carmel thought ‘Ah sure what else would they say, they’re family’ and put her manuscript in a shoe box under the bed and returned to normal life. In a short while she had met and married Roger Harrington and in a bout of boredom during her first pregnancy she decided to revisit the manuscript under the bed. Getting a very positive response and loads of encouragement from husband, Roger, she made up her mind to self-publish and the rest as they say is almost history! Beyond Graces Rainbow was an instant success becoming both Kindle Book of the Year and Romantic eBook of the Year 2013 bringing Carmel’s gift of storytelling to the attention of well known publishing house Harper Collins who offered her a book deal. The Life You Left – Carmel’s second novel was launched to a packed Enniscorthy Castle in June of 2014 as part of our Focal Festival and Woman’s Way had this to say about it, ‘Engaging from the first page, at times emotional, at others thoughtful. The Life You Left will make you see life in a different way.’ Since then things have gone from better to better still for our talented author with Carmel often

described as the next Maeve Binchy. She is now a panellist on TV3`s Midday Show where she discusses, among other things, how she manages to juggle her busy life of wife, mother and writer and continues to enjoy it all. And enjoy it she does and that shows in every aspect of her being. Here is a lady who exudes love, happiness and positivity. She is a charming, talented, capable, successful woman comfortable in her own skin with a desire and a willingness to support and encourage other writers and potential writers. Like a good wine she is always good company possessing that rare knack of making you feel good about yourself. It is always a pleasure to meet and spend time with Carmel Harrington. She is a gifted storyteller, an excellent speaker, a skilled organiser and above all else Carmel Harrington is a doer. She is hard working, methodical, disciplined and reliable – if Carmel Harrington says that she will do something – she will do it. She is energetic and enthusiastic and attributes her oomph and vitality to the fact that she has a very happy and fulfilled life and is doing what she loves to do. And that certainly comes across in her writing. She writes with and from the heart and her heart is pure and honest. She is insightful and compassionate with a tolerance, understanding and acceptance of

human nature. She writes about spirit, friendship, love and above all hope and her books are tender and emotive and will have you reaching for the kleenex and laughing out loud almost at the same time. The Things I Should Have Told You which is due for release on 8th September is about a family and every family has a story… But for the Guinness family a happy ending looks out of reach. Olly and Mae's marriage is crumbling, their teenage daughter Evie is on a mission to self-destruct and their beloved Pops is dying of cancer. Their once strong family unit is slowly falling apart. But Pops has one final gift to offer his beloved family – a ray of hope to cling to. As his life's journey draws to a close, he sends his family on an adventure across Europe in a camper van, guided by his letters, his wisdom and his love. Because Pops knows that all his family needs is time to be together, to find their love for each other and to find their way back home… TheThings I Should Have Told You will be launched by author and actress Claudia Carroll at the Dubray Book Store on Grafton Street on Thursday 15th September at 6.30pm and in the Book Store Wexford on Friday 16th September at 6.30pm and all are welcome. So put the date in your diary and join Carmel Harrington as she celebrates the publication of her fourth novel. – Maria Nolan

New Slaney Writing… New Slaney Writing… four days of gLory by Fiona McAree This poem was highly commended in the recent Focal Literary Festival poetry competition. That Fenian Blood at Vinegar Hill may well have been suppressed But Wexford Republic, set to Rise again would this time be blessed. Strong Christian Nationalists but what would God make of their oath? Fr Sheehy laid their fear to rest and peace to them bestoweth.

Indecision had Enniscorthy in confused disarray, So Paul Galligan soon sought clarity from Dublin of their way. He met with Connolly, Pearse and Plunkett at the GPO... Received instruction to hold the railway, save arms and quickly Go! For this brave young man, a good night's sleep after some tea and buns Then the long three day cycle back avoiding British garrisons! No resting now as the clear message was whispered through the night. The Enniscorthy barracks then taken and disarmed at first light. Disabling of the railway line was the crucial main event. The oppressor's army would by boat to Rosslare be surely sent. Job done for now and a happy united community Achieved with minimum trouble and only injuries of three.

"We'll be spending Three and Fourpence 'cause we're going to a dance!" "Don't think so boys! Whitmore needs money to Arm Arms for the advance." The Athenaeum Theatre was now this town's GPO But very soon word of its Rebellion spread through the ranking foe. Thomas MacDonagh from afar saw the trouble stirring south, Their plans to overpower all the brave souls of Enniscorthy Sent the man from Leitrim under cover to train and sort them out. Were abandoned full thanks due to an Irishman's integrity. He worked as O'Reilly by day in Bolgers drapery store Four days of Glory, Four days of Freedom and Four days of Peace, And Paul Galligan by night training boys at Antwerp for our war. Four days of not needing any porter for the pain to appease Padraig Pearse paid them a visit to commemorate Emmet, But as the British troops rallied from their other fighting game, Whispering plans of a Rising coming soon from Dublin stemeth. Padraig Pearse ordered surrender, saving lives from those without shame. n

“The response to this first-ever writing and reading festival in Kilmore Quay has been truly heart-warming. That so many established Wexford authors have agreed to give of their time and talents is a terrific boost to the village. We are also indebted to the RTE Radio 1 programme Seascapes who have agreed to broadcast the winning entry of our special writing competition with a maritime link. The festival will appeal to beginners as well as experienced writers, and reading enthusiasts will have the opportunity to hear our most popular authors talk about their

JOhNStOWN CAStLe – eXCItING PLANS Johnstown Castle, near Wexford town, opened its doors in July to give the public a glimpse of what has been happening there recently and to learn about its exciting plans for the next few years. “Open Days at Johnstown Castle” took place thanks to Teagasc, owner of the property, who are partnering with the Irish Heritage Trust and the Irish Agricultural Museum to undertake conservation work required to open up the Castle for the public in the coming years. Teagasc has initiated a project to secure the future of Johnstown Castle and its grounds, thanks to the generous support of government. Once the project is complete, the property will offer an exciting visitor experience with three floors of the castle open to the public, a new visitor centre, improved paths and activities in the gardens, combined with new car-parking and entrance arrangements.
