comment This coming weekend will certainly be an exciting one in Enniscorthy with the Rockin’ Food Festival in full swing from 4th to 6th August. With so much going on it could easily be forgotten that another welcome event will be taking place on The Promenade this Friday evening (4th August) at 6pm as the popular Enniscorthy Playground reopens following major refurbishment. All are welcome to attend. The €80,000 refurbishment contract was completed by Wexford-based company Crawford Group. The Department of Children & Youth Affairs provided a grant of €20,000, while Wexford County Council invested the balance of €60,000 in the project. New state-of-the-art attractions in the playground include a central play unit with the Play-Odyssey Senior Tower with “Gun Powder Store” at top level, 2 tunnel double poly slides and many other fun features which will offer children plenty of play value. Specialist sensory and special needs equipment are also included, including eco-tube chimes, an inclusive and fully accessible multi-user wheelchair roundabout and a wheelchairaccessible swing, in addition to a number of other play pieces. Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Cllr Keith Doyle, has added his congratulations to those involved in the project. “This destination playground is a fantastic amenity for local people to enjoy. It will also help to attract visitors to our beautiful town from Co. Wexford and further afield.” – Frank Corcoran

Hope & Dream 2017 raises over €160,000 hats off to everyone who participated, sponsored, organised, volunteered and helped in any way to make this year’s hope & dream 10 a huge success with over €160,000 raised – a staggering total and a new record for this amazing, annual event. Enniscorthy Credit Union provided the venue for the formal announcement and the presentation of the proceeds which were split equally between two great and deserving services – the Hope Cancer Support Centre and County Wexford Hospice Homecare. Our photos (kindly provided by David Butler) show the organisers and the two recipient charities receiving their cheques.

Next year’s split has been decided and it will be 50% to Hope Cancer Support Centre, 25% to Wexford Hospice Homecare and 25% for MRI fundraising for Wexford

General Hospital. Next year’s Hope & Dream 10 will be held on Sunday, April 8th, 2018. We look forward to it being another huge success. n

WHAT IS cRYpTOcURREncY: FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES

21ST-cEnTURY UnIcORn – OR THE mOnEY Of THE fUTURE?

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

Few people know that cryptocurrencies emerged as a side-product of another invention. Satoshi Nakamoto, the unknown inventor of Bitcoin, the first and still most important cryptocurrency, never intended to invent a currency. In his announcement of Bitcoin in late 2008, Satoshi said he developed “A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.“ To realise digital cash you need a payment network with accounts, balances, and transactions. One major problem every payment network has to solve is to prevent so-called double spending: to prevent an entity spending the same amount twice. Usually, this is done by a central server who keeps records and balances. In a decentralised P2P network, you don‘t have this server. So you need every single entity of the network to do this job. Every peer in the network needs to have a list with all transactions to check if future transactions are valid or an attempt to double spend. A transaction is a file that says, “Bob gives X Bitcoin to Alice” and is signed by Bob‘s private key. After signing, a transaction is broadcast in the network, sent from one peer to every other peer. The transaction is known almost immediately by the whole network. But only after a specific amount of time does it get confirmed. Confirmation is a critical concept in cryptocurrencies. You could say that cryptocurrencies are all about confirmation. Only miners can confirm transactions. This is their job in a cryptocurrency-network. They take transactions, solve a crypto-puzzle, stamp them as legit and spread them in the network. Bitcoins can only be created if miners solve a cryptographic puzzle and stamp the transaction. Cryptocurrencies are secure from political influence. Money that promises to preserve and increase its value over time. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Rockers, Food & Re-enactors As the 8th Rock'n'Roll Festival approaches, the local s.E. RnR committee has been reviewing the many wonderful developments over the past eight years, particularly the partnership with the taste of Enniscorthy in 2014, which led to the relabelling of the Festival to Rockin' Food in 2015, and resulted in the introduction of o'connell Marketing, so ably led by Jean o'connell, who with her team and in partnership with Enniscorthy chamber, Wexford county council, s.E. RnR club and Enniscorthy historical Re-enactment society have taken the August bank holiday Festival to amazing new heights… “A review of the local, national and international bands and artists who were hosted by S.E. RnR Club over the past 10 years or more reminds us of such great acts as: Wildfire Wilie (Swe), Charlie Hightone and The Rockits (Esp), Livestock Davies (Wales),

Boys from France who wowed the Market Square in '16. “We welcome the return of some of the above this August B a n k H o l i d a y t o ro c k Enniscorthy. This year they are joined by Pat Cappoci (Aus), Ruby Dee and The

Dates For Your Diary: atHenaeum noStalGic exHiBition: Enniscorthy Athenaeum wishes to extend an Open Invitation to all to come in and view its nostalgic collection of photographs from the past on Sunday 13th August following the annual St. Mary`s Patron. With many families coming together and many visitors home for the Patron, the Athenaeum Directors and newly-appointed Event Management Committee feel that the beautiful building at the heart of the town is the perfect forum for people to gather and reminisce as they browse the Athenaeum’s Photographic Archive. Teas and coffees will be served and all are welcome. Do come along, you may find many familiar faces of mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, neighbours and friends or simply well-known Enniscorthy people among the treasured snaps.

Bank Holiday re-enactment: Once again the streets of Enniscorthy will reverberate with the sound of musket, the clash of pike and the heady scent of gun-powder as Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society along with friends from Monasterevin, Kilkenny, Ashbourne and Mayo re-create some of the battle scenes from the 1798 Rebellion for this year’s Rockin’ Food Fest. Redcoat and Rebel will come face to face one more time in the shadow of Vinegar Hill on Sunday 6th August at 12 noon. And whilst re-writing history is not an option, you can expect the Rebels to fight the good fight and give the Crown Forces a jolly good thrashing or should that be a jolly good walloping as it all takes place at Henry Wallop’s Enniscorthy Castle. This event promises to be one of the highlights of the weekend and indeed a photographer’s dream – full of colour, pageantry and a lotta, lotta noise. Don’t miss it. On Saturday 5th August, EHRS will provide a Living History Display at Enniscorthy Castle for the history buffs and all those interested in hearing what it was like in Enniscorthy in 1798. Please call in and see us. – Maria Nolan

A young kerry man, shane Finn, has recently completed an incredible 24 marathons in 24 days. As part of this hectic running schedule shane arrived in Enniscorthy on 6th July on his way from Arklow. shane’s fundraising efforts resulted in over €100,000 being raised for spina bifida hydrocephalus Ireland. Shane received a hero’s welcome in Enniscorthy as he was met by supporters, Council officials and District Councillors. And as part of his stopover local children got to showcase their sports exercise in their wheelchairs in the Market Square. n

EHRS – Remembering Fr. Murphy on 1st July members of Enniscorthy historical Reenactment society (EhRs) travelled to tullow to commemorate the 219th anniversary of the death of Fr. Murphy. After the battle of Vinegar Hill and still expecting help from France, Fr. Murphy and about 3,000 men escaped the wrath of General Lake who had ordered his force of 20,000 highly skilled and well equipped soldiers to take no prisoners and shoot every wounded rebel captured. Fr. Murphy and his band marched eighty miles in three

days in the hottest summer of the century and on 24th June they captured Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, expecting rebels from the area to join with them. But apart from a few miners, who later deserted, there were no rebels to help them. With Wexford beaten and no support available outside the county Fr. Murphy decided to return’home to Wexford to meet our fate’. On the way back he was captured with a companion, James Gallagher, on 2nd July 1798 and taken to General Duff’s headquarters at Tullow

where they were both tried, found guilty of being rebels, and sentenced to death. Both men were hanged at Market Square, Tullow, and Yoemen decapitated Fr. Murphy, placed his head on a spike and burned his body in a barrel of pitch. This year Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment member Richard O`Sullivan laid a wreath of purple and gold on the Fr. Murphy Monument at M a r k e t S q u a r e , Tu l l o w. Chairman Ray Murphy read an account of the death of the f a m o u s p r i e s t a n d Ti m Corrigan gave a moving ren-

dition of the Wexford anthem Boolavogue. The short ceremony was watched by a group of visiting tourists from Manchester, who were being hosted by Tullow R u g b y C l u b . T h e y w e re enthralled by the 1798 outfits and pikes and interested in hearing the story of Fr. Murphy and the Rebellion and took lots of photographs with members of EHRS and with the pikes. All good for Enniscorthy tourism as they have promised to take in Vinegar Hill on their next trip to Tullow. – Maria Nolan

The event was a huge success with approximately 300 people participating. None of this would have been possible without the help of: Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce, Wexford County Council, Order of Malta, Slaney Athletics, An Garda Siochana, Kilcannon Garden Centre, Enniscorthy Farmers Mart, Newline Oil and Tom Dempsey who was MC for the event. The organisers would like to acknowledge the major role

played by the various sponsors in supporting the event and would like to thank each and every one of them. And they would also like to thank everyone who volunteered, participated or contributed in any way to making the AirconMech 5k event a huge success. AirconMech is delighted to have presented a cheque for €5,184 to Friends of Wexford General Hospital towards the purchase of a MRI scanner for the hospital. n

GP crisis looming Fianna Fáil td for Wexford, James browne, has said the government’s failure to act on the escalating crisis in gp recruitment will result in many rural areas being left without a primary health care service. Deputy Browne said, “GP services have been declining steadily over the past number of years as a result of a chronic shortage of GPs throughout the country. It is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit GPs to areas outside the main urban hubs, and as a result, towns and villages across Ireland are being left without an adequate service. “The situation is particularly bleak in Wexford as new information shows that 25% of GPs in the county will reach retirement age within the next seven years. The Irish Medical Organisation has warned that it will be impossible to replace

many of these doctors once they retire as there simply aren’t enough people training to become GPs. This year, for the first year, the GP training scheme was under-subscribed. It is inevitable that many rural areas will be left without a primary health care service… If there aren’t enough GPs in our towns and villages, people will be forced to go to the Emergency Department, and the overcrowding crisis there will be further exacerbated. It’s a vicious circle and the patients are the ones who are losing out. “GPs have had their funding cut by 38% in recent years and the end result is that young people simply aren’t entering the profession… Funding for GP services needs to be increased to make it more attractive for young doctors to set up practice in rural communities,” concluded Deputy Browne. n

State-of-the-art playground to re-open

The newly refurbished Council Playground on the Enniscorthy Promenade will officially re-open on Friday 4th August at 6.00pm. All are welcome to come along and celebrate the re-opening. Due to health and safety considerations it was necessary to close the playground to public use during the construction period. The works have been carried out by Crawford Group, a Wexford-based company specialising in the design and construction of children’s play areas, skate parks and multi-use games facilities. Funding has been provided by Wexford County Council (€60,000) with assistance from the Department of Children & Youth Affairs (€20,000). Specialist sensory and special needs equipment have been incorporated into the state-of-the-art playground.

Cardiac services in the South East last month we carried a story about the unsatisfactory cardiac care service in the south East region. since then we’ve heard from local Minister, paul kehoe, welcoming the statement in June from Minister for health simon harris td which confirms an agreement to expedite a national review of all primary pcI (percutaneous coronary Intervention) services, encompassing the south East Region. In his statement Minister Harris outlined; “This review will seek to ensure that as many patients as possible have access on a 24/7 basis to safe and sustainable emergency interventions following a heart attack. This review will clearly encompass all regions of the country,

including the South East. “My Department will immediately commence the preparatory work including identifying an international expert and examining the scope of the review. The guiding principles for this review will be to strive to provide a primary PCI service that can deliver clinical outcomes on par with international standards.” Minister Kehoe has stressed that this review does not affect the additional resources provided to UHW or the commitment to review the impact of extended hours at the existing cath lab and the deployment of a mobile cath lab and he will continue to work with Minister Harris and the HSE to seek resolution on this issue. n

Future Superstars!

The Irish College of Music Theatre's (IMT) Open day was held in the National Opera House on July 29th. IMT has created history by being the only validated Musical Theatre College in Ireland delivering third level accredited courses. This exciting venture is opening a campus at our very own National Opera House for the talent in the south east. "It's the icing on the cake to bring this unique and wonderful venture home in the beautiful surroundings of our National Opera House, giving affordable, accessible courses to the talent in this region. My passion and love for the per-

forming arts developed on this very stage all those years ago at the tender age of twelve as part of the Wexford International Opera Festival. I heard a Romanian soprano singing and I was hooked. I knew at that point my life was destined to be on the stage and pursue my dream. And the rest as they s a y i s h i s t o r y. " D e i rd re Masterson has gone on to perform all around the world to critical acclaim with awards, recordings and an enviable CV to her credit. She is equally as passionate about giving back to the arts and helping to create education in an affordable, accessible way.

In addition to third level courses IMT is providing a Junior School aged 6-17 years, Transition Year programmes and an Adult Evening introductory course in musical theatre studies. "We have a phenomenal faculty, all leading experts in their respective fields, wanting to share techniques, skills and experiences to further one’s development”, Miss Masterson continues, “there is genuinely something for everyone depending on age, standard and personal goals". If Music Be The Food Of Love… Maura Flannery & Pat Donohoe entertaining at Alba Restaurant. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Music and fine dining certainly go well together and Angelo Bonfirraro of Alba Restaurant, Enniscorthy, knows it and has introduced musical interludes on Thursday evenings in the months of July and August at his very popular and ambient premises overlooking the river Slaney at the heart of Enniscorthy. The cosmopolitan restaurant with the relaxed, friendly atmosphere has been nominated seven times by clientele as best restaurant, best wine experience, best chef, best newcomer, best casual dining, best customer service and best management in County Wexford

in the Irish Restaurant Awards competition 2016. An Italian cuisine restaurant providing a wide range of pastas and grilled dishes using locally sourced fresh meats, fish and seafood blended with the finest Italian imports and deliciously accompanied by a unique selection of original Italian wines, Alba is owned and run by husband and wife team Angelo and Katia who were married recently in their native Sicily joined by an Enniscorthy contingent of friends and wellwishers who flew out to be with them for the delightful occasion and celebrate their special event.

On a recent Thursday the warmth and relaxed character of Alba was further enhanced by the dulcet and honeyed tones of Maura Flannery and the melodious accordion playing of the well-known Enniscorthy entertainer and crooner Pat Donohoe who charmed the diners with wonderful golden oldies like Amore, Careless Love, Autumn Leaves and What a Wonderful World. A most innovative and enjoyable idea and well done to Angelo and Katia who have a variety of local and national performers on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm for the month of August for your entertainment. – Maria Nolan

New Sunset Tour at world’s oldest working lighthouse

Anthony Kearns

Wexford Light Opera Society is delighted to announce that its show for 2018 is Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street written by Stephen Sondheim. One of the darkest musicals ever written it is the unsettling tale of a Victorian-era barber who returns home to London after fifteen years of exile to take revenge on the corrupt judge who ruined his life. When revenge eludes him, Sweeney swears vengeance on

the entire human race, murdering as many people as he can, while his business associate Mrs. Lovett bakes the bodies into meat pies and sells them to the unsuspecting public. Perhaps composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s most perfect score, Sweeney Todd is lush, operatic, and full of soaring beauty, pitch-black comedy and stunning terror. The show will run in the National Opera House, Wexford, from Monday 30th April to

Saturday 5th May 2018. The production team is Director – Vivian Coates, Musical Director – Fintan Cleary, Choreographer – Nicole McDonald and Chorus Mistress – Eithne Corrigan. According to the lighthouse m a n a g e r A n n Wa t e r s , “Watching the sun go down at the tip of the Hook Peninsula is a memorable experience. The lighthouse watch-room offers spectacular panoramic views underneath unpolluted dark skies with just the sea as its mirror and the lighthouse beacon casting its presence; enjoying this vista of the sunset at the end of the day is something we have enjoyed at the lighthouse for many years and we are delighted to now offer this as a shared experience to visitors with the added flavour of some local and Irish food produce.” The brand new Sunset Tour experience offers visitors the opportunity to take a guided tour up the 115 well-worn steps of the medieval tower and see its heritage come to life as they meet life-sized figures of the Monk who first established the beacon at the site in the 5th century followed by the Knight who built the tower, William Marshal, some 800 years ago and hear of life as a light-keeper before stepping on to the top-floor outdoor

balcony to take in the 360 degree sweeping views of the southeast of Ireland. Tours culminate with the spectacular panoramic views of the rolling seas stretching out while visitors savour Irish mead, prosecco, fresh tea and coffee along with Ballyhack smokehouse smoked salmon on homemade brown bread, a selection of homemade canapés and homemade mini desserts. The Sunset Tour Experience will be on offer at 8pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until the end of September 2017 and are available by advance booking only. Sunset guided tours at Hook Lighthouse are the perfect opportunity for a private tour, corporate occasion or a family day out. The sunset tours will only operate at a minimum of 12 persons or a maximum of 24. Pre-booking is essential and can be done so by emailing Cathy on info@hookheritage.ie or calling (051) 397055. General guided tours are on offer 7 days a week at Hook Lighthouse. Free facilities at Hook Lighthouse include parking, toilets, picnic areas, wifi. Follow Hook Lighthouse on Facebook and twitter @hooklighthouse. n

Blackstairs Blues Launch

Hamlet’s Enniscorthy connection!

French Connection

To mark our historic French connection, Enniscorthy Athenaeum hosted an evening of entertainment on Friday 14th July to celebrate the storming of the Bastille. On the 14th July 1789 the citizens of Paris stormed the medieval fortress and prison at the centre of the city, an action which became the flashpoint of the French Revolution. Although there were only seven inmates incarcerated at the time of the attack it became the symbol of revolution and spirit of republicanism which reverberated throughout 18th century Europe. The overthrowing of a monarchy and liberation of the masses became the forerunner for the 1798 United Irishman Rebellion and Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society were in attendance on Friday

evening establishing that connection as they marched in full regalia flying the French red, white and blue from Market Square to the Athenaeum, where MC Tony Mc Clean officiated for the event, calling on a multitude of local entertainers among them Maura Flannery, Pat Donohoe, Josie Flood, Matthew Hyland, Michael Bull Sullivan, Annie Gilpin and others including a father and son from the Netherlands and Australian couple, Pat and Alan Jones, who gave a rather delicious little performance of Chantilly Lace. An enjoyable and free event and well done to Maura Flannery for the concept and the Athenaeum for providing the wonderful venue and the wine and nibbles. Definitely one to be repeated on a more regular basis. – Maria Nolan

This year’s Blackstairs Blues Festival dates are 8th, 9th & 10th of September. A Press Launch night will be held on Thursday 24th of August at 8.30pm in Treacy’s Hotel Enniscorthy. There will be Live Blues by Waterford’s own Delta Dogs who will set the tone for the night, and will no doubt set the bar for what is going to be another fantastic festival. Finger food provided on the night!! Delta Dogs are the house

band for Waterford Blues Club, which launched in 2013, and has developed a devoted following in the South East. The Delta Dogs play a set which seamlessly blends the soul of the original Delta and Chicago blues masters, like Elmore James, Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley, with the fire of 60's revivalists like Clapton, Green, Hendrix and Irish icon Rory Gallagher, and the swagger of Texans Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Billy Gibbons. n

Enniscorthy - "Rock‘n’Roll Town" This August bank holiday weekend the South east rock‘n’roll Club celebrates its eighth rock ‘n’ roll Town festival. The Club is one of the most active and most vibrant Rock ‘n’ Roll Clubs on these Islands, with scores of members and supporters, a very healthy and beneficial relationship with all local venues and a network of connections with many other clubs in many locations, particularly Dublin, Belfast, South Wales, London, Manchester, Birmingham and the Newcastle/ Durham area of North East England. S.E. R'n'R Club members regularly travel by train, boat and plane to all the above venues and Rockers from there visit us here on a regular basis. ‘We go there and they come here’, according to Club Officer Richie Cotter, ‘a most amicable arrangement’. ‘The vibrancy and energy of S.E. R'n'R Club comes somewhat from its hardworking committee, but mainly from its members and supporters. And the Club gives its members much to be active about, with its weekly Dance Classes every

Eamonn Doyle

Wednesday at The Bailey at 7.30pm and its monthly gigs in either the IFA Centre or The Bailey. Both of these venues have wonderful dance floors and South East Rockers LOVE to dance. These monthly gigs attract dancers from Dublin, Kilkenny, Laois, Waterford and from all over Co. Wexford. But the highlight of the S.E. R'n’R Club’s activities are the music festivals with which it engages, namely – Strawberry Roots and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Town Festival, now an integral part of the biggest event in Enniscorthy’s social calendar – The Rockin’ Food Fest. buT hoW DID IT ALL beGIN? How did Enniscorthy become the

capital of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Ireland, so much so that it has been labelled ‘Ireland’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Town’? Eamonn Doyle, one of the founders of S.E. R'n'R Club and its present Chairman, maintains that the seeds were sown way back in the 80’s, when the Shannon side of town witnessed the developing scene that incorporated the ‘Shannon Teds’. The movie ‘Grease’ may have had much to do with it and very popular bands such as The Jets who were in the charts at that time. Murphy Floods Hotel was the venue for the first big rock 'n' roll gig just over ten years ago, which Eamonn and his pals helped to organise – a fundraising event for Slaney Search and Rescue. The Runaway Boys played to a packed house. In fact many more tickets were sold than anticipated, so the Enniscorthy Rockers knew that they were on to something with great potential. 2010 saw the first Rock ‘n’ Roll Town Festival, then called "Riverside Jump" – a very brave and original event on this Island. And as they say the rest is history! – maria nolan

Slaney Education & Training Feature

2 August 2017

Practical Skills for SME Employment Practical Skills for SME Employment is a full-time training programme run by Enniscorthy Enterprise and Technology Centre (EETC), funded by Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board. The programme is aimed at students primarily under 35 years of age who do not hold a Level 5 Major Award or Leaving Certificate. The new programme will offer a Major Award in Business Skills, concentrating on tools that will help the students in the workplace of the SME sector. The programme includes different elements that will be of great support and value to young SME businesses. The sponsor is an Enterprise Centre and as a result it is well aware of the skill base that is required by local businesses and employers that are now looking for employees who are multi-skilled. On completion of the programme the students are not only efficient in Business Administration, Spreadsheets and Accountancy for business and accountancy roles, but they will also have the ability to be involved in the Customer Service and the Digital Marketing of the business. In the changing pace of business today EETC believes

that the two subjects Entrepreneurship and Design Skills will give the students a great knowledge of business. In the potential labour market EETC sees opportunities in the businesses it works with, SMEs that are in their growth cycle. These companies are more likely to be looking at a work placement student as a potential employee rather than a training exercise for the student. EETC has a good relationship with these companies. It is also strongly involved with Gorey and Enniscorthy Chambers. It also sees a great opportunity with some of the start-ups in the New Hatch Lab in Gorey that EETC is managing. As part of the Entrepreneurship and Design Studies modules students work on case studies relating to startups and discuss their findings. The Centre exposes the students to opportunities in witnessing startups first hand by interacting with companies and the people in the building. Last year they attended a number of business starts-up pitches, for example a business start-up came in to address the class this year to practise his pitch for Dragon’s Den and the class learned a lot from the experience with having the ability to ask questions and get points of view.

As an Enterprise Centre, EETC has a large amount of contacts in the business community. It now has companies contacting it to find out when will students be ready for placement. EETC also has 33 businesses situated in Enniscorthy Enterprise Centre and will have about 20 in Gorey in the new centre, many of which facilitate EETC with work experience. EETC has a tendency to target companies that are expanding or have a good chance of employing people after work experience. These businesses are at start-up stage and they invariably need administrative and innovative young people once they get trading. Business Administration major award modules will include:  Accounting Manual and Comp (5N1348)  Work Experience (N1364)  Digital Marketing (5N0972)  Customer Service (5N1610)  Business Administration (5N1951)  Entrepreneurship (5N1977)  Spreadsheet Methods (5N0784)  Design Skills (5M2102)  Ebusiness (5N1369)  Manual Handling  CV Preparation n

The financial boost comes at a key moment in Ireland’s move to accessible, affordable, quality childcare.

Minister Kehoe said: “I am delighted to announce that local childcare services will receive €163,542 in extra funding.

“The money will be used to provide more new childcare places, maintenance and building work as well as outdoor play areas and is available for immediate draw-down by providers here in Wexford.”

The Leaving Cert results are due soon and first round offers will be made. With most of our students having to leave County Wexford to gain a 3rd level education, Enniscorthy Credit union recognises that the cost of further education is a huge burden on most parents. Their Education Loans mean that parents and students alike can sort out the financial side of 3rd Level which leaves the student to concentrate on their studies. Pat O’Shea, Chairman, commented that “Enniscorthy Credit Union wishes all Leaving Cert students success in their exam results, and their future whatever it may bring. Strange fruit!

Sean Davitt from Pairce Mhuire, Ferns, is pictured on left with his unusual apple tree. Last month Sean noticed the apples were growing on one of his trees while at the same time one of the branches was still in bloom – 110 days after the rest of the tree was in bloom. The number of visitors to the Visit Wexford website has increased by 11% over the last 12 months with the website continuing to attract visitors from home and abroad. In May and June 2017, Visit Wexford had over 2 million impressions through their Google ad campaign which has resulted in a substantial increase in the Visit Wexford brand online as well as offline. Those attending Monday’s event also heard details of a campaign which was recently rolled out in conjunction with Tourism Ireland, Rosslare Europort, Stena Line and Irish Ferries to promote Wexford to markets all across the UK. Tourism Officer, Siobhan O’Neill said, “Wexford tourism is booming in the domestic market, Wexford is leading the way in the Southeast region and is currently the county attracting the highest number of domestic visitors. Wexford has room to grow in terms of attracting more international visitors and it is thought Ireland’s Ancient East is the ideal tourism product, which will enable Wexford to attract more international visitors.” n

Jim Campbell at his photo exhibition and talk in Enniscorhy Library. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Well known and celebrated Wexford photographer, Jim Campbell, presented his most recent exhibition – Journey Into the Unknown – at enniscorthy Library on Thursday 20th July giving the large attendance an insight into war-torn Syria and Iraq. As a photographic journalist with the Wexford Echo newspapers for the past sixteen years, Jim Campbell has travelled the length and breadth of the country covering all major events along with all those in the county, and his creativity and thought-provoking images have brought him both national and international recognition appearing in many national newspapers, magazines and publications throughout Ireland and the UK. In 2015 Jim presented his exhibition Divided at the Wexford Arts Centre, a wonderful collection of photographic work from his widespread travels through Israel and the West Bank. Journey Into the Unknown

25

Aleppo Exhibition at the Library was launched by Minister Paul Kehoe who has visited Syria on many occasions in his capacity as Minister for Defence and said that the first thing you notice is the children, ‘I watched five or six kids playing football on the Golan Heights and then shelling began and all of a sudden the children just disappeared.’ Minister Kehoe complimented Jim and the organisation he travels with, SOS, for the work they are doing making people aware of the everyday struggle of life for the ordinary people in war-torn areas of the world. Jim says that his main purpose in travelling to the conflict areas of the Middle East – Iraq and Syria, was to photograph ‘those who were left behind, those who couldn`t get out’. ‘Many people have left Syria because they could afford to but I wanted to see how the ones who were left behind were coping.’ His photographs tell the story of war, separation and a

land divided as we watch images of the destruction to towns, villages, Christian churches and cemeteries but they also tell the story of life and hope as we see children smiling for the camera, holding hands and playing together on bombed-out streets. Jim tells us the very human story behind his images and instantly they become real to us – no longer imprints on a screen but almost someone we know. Jim’s images manage to involve us, the viewer, with the people he has met, their stories and their daily struggle living with the ravages of war. One of those ordinary people is a man called Vahan Veghian who has written eighteen poems about his tormented existence in a war zone, he has dispaired of ever getting them published so Jim Campbell is hoping to assist him to do so. Congratulations to Jim on this wonderful exhibition which captures the reality of war for those at the coalface. – Maria Nolan

Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford James Browne has criticised the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane ross, for his refusal to publish a report into the legislative status of rosslare europort. The report was commissioned in 2013 by the then Minister for Transport Leo

Varadkar. Deputy Browne said, “This report was commissioned with the aim of identifying ways to harness the true potential of Irish ports. Despite numerous requests to publish the report by economic consultants Indecon, the Minister has to date refused to reveal the contents of the report.

“Rosslare Europort is critical for the future of the Irish economy post-Brexit. Wexford is uniquely placed to take advantage of Brexit and bolster our country’s global trade links. However this can only occur if the Government actively supports Rosslare Europort in the years ahead,” concluded Deputy Browne. n

Garden Birds in Enniscorthy

VET DIARY FOR AUG

With the approach of autumn, many people will be setting up bird tables and feeders in their gardens to provide food for wild birds and, in return, to get pleasure from seeing them up close. The talk comprises an introduction to the many species that one is likely to see in gardens in and around Enniscorthy together with information on feeding and participating in an annual survey organised by BirdWatch Ireland to monitor the species that turn up. Jim Hurley is a well-known environmentalist with a particular interest in natural habitats. Admission is free and all are welcome, if you require additional support to fully participate please contact the librarian on 053-9236055.

with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital Joe Kavanagh with some thoughts following a trip to Kerry.

n

I headed down to Kerry recently and was privileged enough to link up with a local outside of Kilarney who took me and the lads out onto an island on the lower lake of Killarney. There we watched the deer, the does with their fawns feed and wander no distance ahead of us. He was telling me that in April, the females, heavily pregnant, swim out from the mainland to this island to give birth. They stay here to graze and rear their young during the summer months until they are hardy enough to make the journey back to the mainland. It must take them a half hour or more to make this arduous journey and the genius of knowing where and when to go . It’s safe and fairly free from natural predators except man’s intrusions which you’d hope just extends to nosey tourists and iPhone shots. It got me thinking of the journeys that swallows make from North Africa all the way back to the same sheds and barns as the previous year, eels swimming from the Sargasso sea all the way to our rivers, salmon swimming the Atlantic all the way to spawning grounds up our rivers and lakes. We label this as instinct and think no more about it but these creatures are so in touch with the natural rhythms of our dear Mother Earth that they understand and read the signs. It’s not Kiltealy 15 kms but its pretty impressive when you really stop to think of what really is happening. Almost no wild animals were killed when the tsunami struck the Thailand coast a few years ago… they had all moved up onto higher ground! Who told them?.... It certainly wasn't the coastguard!

When I hear people taking about 'poor dumb animals' I realise that it’s an understanding that we have lost… but they haven't. Our challenge is to get back to learning the rhythms of nature and what better way to start than getting out in it, camping , treking, swimming, walking the beach, riversides and woods. People come here to experience the natural beauty we have all around us and it’s pretty much free if ya box clever!! A great excuse is to take the dog to the beach, the woods, the river… could be just what the doctor ordered. Listening to that yearning to go back to the simplicity of what’s important as the animals show us each day. n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond electric cars According to all reports we will all be driving electric or hybrid cars within 20 years or so. It appears that these vehicles are the answer to the emissions crisis we are told that we are facing. There are as many opinions on this issue as there are people on the planet but the prevailing view is that unless something is done shortly we will all be evaporated at some stage in the future. Speaking for myself, I reckon that I and my generation will be long gone before disaster strikes, as will our grandchildren, but I imagine that there is a lurking danger out there somewhere. It strikes me that regardless of anything we may or not do in little Ireland the impact on the globe will be minimal. Even if we succeeded in the impossible of having no emissions whatever from this island, the global effect would be nil. It is the large countries like China, Russia and the United States which between them pump up billions of tons of toxic discharge into the atmosphere each year who will eventually decide the future of this planet. A more immediate effect of the introduction of electric or hybrid cars over the next twenty

years or so will be the future of the petrol stations situated throughout the length and breadth of the country. These stations currently offer a tremendous service to travellers of our highways and byways and indeed on the periphery of our towns and villages. They have small shops which sell almost anything from an anchor to a needle and provide this type of service right into the unsocial hours when town stores are closed. The main attraction of these stores is that they sell petrol or diesel and if that is removed one would assume that a huge proportion of their business will go down the drain. That is unless some method of a quick charge for electric cars can be found which will then attract quick stops at these stations. I can never see people pulling in to a charging point and hanging around for hours waiting for their vehicle to charge. Therefore something new will have to be innovated to keep business going at these centres. It will be interesting to hang around to see what is going to happen. Another issue is surely going to be as to how we can provide the energy necessary to power

Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill these vehicles. Electricity in itself is produced by fossil fuels in the main and this gibberish talk about wind energy and wave energy is pie in the sky. All we have to do is look at the ridiculous slow pace of getting broadband out across this country and ask ourselves how long would the introduction to the energy grid of wind or wave power in sufficient volume take to power our normal needs much less all these extra cars, lorries, public transport busses and trains etc. The harsh reality is that if we want to get rid of fossil fuel dependence the only thing to do is to

reconsider nuclear energy. So I will leave that one with you. rOadwOrks We all know that roadworks need to be carried out. The question is when they should be done. Take for instance the closing of roads for resurfacing. In many cases it is difficult to see as to why this work could not be carried out overnight rather than during business hours. There is also the issue of the time of year that such operations are undertaken. Around Enniscorthy at the moment there is a significant number of road closures due to

the passage of the Enniscorthy Bypass. These closures are very necessary so as not to impede the progress of this project. However, normal upgrading work could be and should be better managed. Take for instance the latest works on Wexford Bridge. This operation which will go on for weeks will affect many of our readers in that part of the county. Apparently, a single-lane traffic system will be in place for the months of August and September, two of the busiest months of the year. This will cause total havoc in an area that has been blighted by roadworks, literally for years, as anyone who travels the Wexford Castlebridge road will verify. Sometimes it’s difficult to fathom the thinking behind some of these decisions. rOadside art Speaking of roads brings to mind the issue of so-called roadside art. We are all by now familiar with these massive iron , mostly rusty and dirty looking, or other monstrosities along our national primary roads. Apparently a condition of getting structural grants for these new roads is that a percentage of the road cost is devoted to roadside art.

Yet if a local business puts a sign next or near a primary road it is removed by the council because it is a distraction to drivers on such fast roads. Planning permission applications for such signs would of course be refused. And of course there is merit in that. Such signs could be dangerous as drivers try to read them as they travel at up to 120 kilometres per hour. However, I’m always puzzled as to how it is determined that some or all of this artwork is not a similar distraction to drivers. Overheard in the Pub I was having a quiet drink in the pub the other night and couldn’t help overhear the following conversation between two fellows sitting at the counter. One of them says, “I can’t take it anymore, every time I have an argument with the wife she becomes historical.” The other guy says, “You mean hysterical.” “No,” says the first fellow, “I mean historical, every time we have an argument she’ll go, I still remember the time when you…” n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

GOREY… gorey’s much-loved market house is an integral part of the fabric of main street, gorey, and has had a prominent place in the history, heritage and culture of the town since it was constructed in the early 18th century. Wexford County Council is now seeking to restore the prominence of the Market House building as a focal point on Gorey’s Main Street and to further develop its relationship with the commercial life and public realm of the town. With this in mind, the Council has commenced a process to support the reinvestment and redevelopment of the Market House. It now invites submissions from the public that will guide the Council in their efforts to secure a sustainable use for the Market House and adjoining lands.

for the benefit of Gorey’s cultural practitioners and audiences. It calls for the County Council to view the Market House as more than an isolated ‘space’ or ‘place’ by developing it into a cultural nucleus for building a much broader, creative cluster of many cultural spaces and places around the town. Its vision is to create a professional, cultural management facility, with the aim of fostering a vibrant cultural community, where art, culture, knowledge and community meet. In terms of facilities, Gorey’s Cultural Centre would house a project space for emerging and professional cultural practitioners in the upper chamber; Artists, Curators, Musicians, Filmmakers, Performers, Writers, Critics and Cultural Audiences. On the ground floor would be a Culture Café for people to meet, including a Locals Gallery and Cultural Information Hub. The Culture Café would open out onto the Culture Yard to the rear, which would act as a transient cultural space for pop-ups, urban gardens, markets/fairs, street feasts and intimate gigs/performances. HOOK... Final twO talks in series at hOOk lighthOuse in aid OF helen blake PrOject Jimmy FitzGibbon of New Ross Historical Society will take to the podium on Wednesday, August 9th, and he will host a talk titled ‘It said it on paper – New Ross Standard, May 5th 1916.’ Jimmy is a member of the New Ross Historical Society and he is custodian of what has become known as the ‘Cavanagh Collection’. Cavanagh, a harness maker from North St in New Ross, had a keen interest in early photography in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, and has left about 1,500 glass plate negatives of remarkably high quality giving a unique view of his life and times in the area. He also had a magic lantern, a device that preceded the cinema, and in the collection there are 100’s of lantern slides of interest, from the route to India via the newly-opened Suez Canal to some originals of the fatal Scott expedition in 1910 to the Antarctic by Ponting, the official photographer of the trip.

Caroline gets motoring

skoda kodiaq review by Caroline Kidd

the skoda kodiaq is skoda’s first suv and skoda was building the hype for this new model for months before it finally arrived in ireland earlier in 2017. The Skoda PR machine was in overdrive but now that the Kodiaq is here and we’ve had a proper chance to experience it on Irish roads, the hype seems duly authorised. The Skoda Kodiaq is aimed squarely at the family market and with five or seven seats depending on specification, and prices starting from a headline €28,795, the Kodiaq is certainly worth a closer look. That headline figure is for an entry level, five seat, 1.4litre TSI 125hp petrol model. Diesels start from €35,495. To turn your Kodiaq into a seven seater, it’s an extra €1,000 on the list price. There is a lot on offer here. Built on the Volkswagen Group’s modular MQB platform, the Skoda Kodiaq follows that great Skoda tradition of being enormous inside. And while there are a lot of rival seven seat MPVs

Skoda Kodiaq

that offer similar space, the Kodiaq is wrapped in a far more desirable package with the kerb appeal of an SUV. The Kodiaq has the sort of attitude that implies that it would not look out of place in a field or forest, or pulling something like a caravan or horse box. The interior of the Kodiaq is classic Skoda: well-made, functional and clearly laid out. The quality in my ‘Style’ test car was really excellent with nice seats and a good mix of dashboard materials. Ireland Kodiaq is offered with three trim levels: Active (from €28,795), Ambition (from €32,475) and Style (from €38,495). 17” alloys, cruise control and air con come as standard and all trims come with a touchs c re e n v a r y i n g i n s i z e depending on specification with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There is plenty of good storage too around the cabin, always necessary for a family on the move. Step up to Ambition for 18” alloys, keyless engine

Equipment on Style models includes 19” alloys, keyless entry, full LED headlights, Alcantara upholstery, interior ambient lighting and a rear view camera. Regardless of whether you choose a five or seven seat model, the Kodiaq has large footwells in the back and boot space in excess of 650 litres. Seven seat models allow more flexibility for families as the two extra seats can be stowed snugly in the boot floor when not

The space in the third row is tight of course and more suited for children, but because you can slide the rear seats forwards, you can create more legroom. Even with the two extra seats in place, Skoda has managed to eke out 270 litres of boot space. In terms of engines for new Kodiaq, the range kicks off with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol unit with 125bhp (manual) or 150bhp (DSG automatic). The 2.0-litre diesel comes with 150 or 190bhp, with the higher powered version reserved for DSG 4×4 models. The best for economy is the 2.0litre TDI 150hp DSG returning up to 58mpg with motor tax of €280 per year. My test car was powered by the 2.0-litre 150hp diesel with a manual gearbox. It feels powerful enough in the Kodiaq and it’s not too noisy. On the road, the Kodiaq may be large but it doesn’t feel too unwieldy and there is a pleasant light feel to all the controls. There is body roll in corners but the car grips so well that it is all really well contained. The

steering weights up well on the open road, and while the Kodiaq is by no means a sporty drive the steering offers enough resistance for the Kodiaq to be a safe and predictable drive. You will feel a little bit of the bumps and ruts that you will find around town at low speeds, but generally the Kodiaq rides comfortably and smoothly. With demand rising for seven seat SUVs, the Skoda Kodiaq will easily find its market. The Kodiaq is easy to recommend and makes a fantastic value proposition for buyers looking for a large family car that’s practical but stylish. model tested: Skoda Kodiaq Style 2.0TDI 150hp 4X4 (7 seat) Price: €41,395 (Range starts at €28,795) Engine: 2.0-litre turbo diesel Power: 150hp Torque: 340Nm 0-100km/h: 9.8 seconds Top speed: 194km/h Economy: 51mpg CO2 emissions: 141g/km Motor tax: €390 per year n

enniscorthy eye young Ferns native, stacey breen, had the pleasure last month of knocking the king of irish country music, n a t h a n c a r t e r, o ff itunes’ irish country no. 1 spot as well as beating taylor swift to the top of the chart. Stacey went to No. 1 with her version of Shania Twain’s hit song, Honey I’m Home. Stacey said that as soon as she heard this song she always knew that one day she would record it. Stacey can add this to her previous four No.1 hits: Up, When I Look at You, I Fall to Pieces, and Blue. The fact that she’s still only 15 years old is a great achievement. She recorded this track at Temple Lane Studios and has toured with the likes of Philiomena Begley and Ray Lynam and has sung with Mary Byrne of X-Factor fame. Well done Stacey. You can get Stacey’s singles on iTunes and you can also download from www.staceybreenmusic.com another wexford artist who has recorded a new cd in recent weeks is davidstown’s barry murphy with his new hit song davy Fitz. It was recorded for the Leinster final and all proceeds go to the Davidstown primary school – a good cause. Barry is probably better known as the frontman with local cover band Nero but this is a solo recording. it’s been a busy few months for several local acts as they have been in the studios recording material and launching new cds. One example is husband and wife duo, kj mcevoy and aileen mythen, better known nowadays as the remedy club. They’ve launched their new single, Come On, from their forthcoming album. The single was launched in Café Fusion in Wexford recently with special guests Eleanor McEvoy, sister of KJ, and The Man Whom (aka The Remedy Club Ian Doyle). This song is a catchy number with Aileen’s vocals and KJ’s guitar playing doing it justice. The single is on iTunes. Aileen and KJ’s new album is entitled Lovers, Legends and Lost Causes. This is their first CD as The Remedy Club as they were previously known as B and the Honey Boy. They have a number of dates pencilled in the diary for late summer and early autumn. mick comerford and michelle murphy have released why don’t we Just dance and are currently back in the recording studio recording a follow-up single and album. best of luck to joe davitt with his new single, bye bye Love. – Joseph doyle

saved! there was some good news recently as the enniscorthy musical society (ems) was saved from extinction by a new committee being formed at an egm. The EGM was called after group member James Dobbs put out a call for people to come forward and save the

long-established society. His call was answered by a large turnout who did not want to see the group disappear from town – that would have been a cultural disaster. We can now look forward to a great show from EMS next year. – Joseph doyle

Supporting us supporting them another very successful race night was held at enniscorthy dog track for the wexford gaa supporters club on thursday 6th july as fans from all over the county, the young and the not so young turned out in numbers to support the progress and advancement of all wexford teams, male and female. Clubs from all around the county took part in the mini games expertly organised by Marguerite Furlong and her Coiste Committee, providing mega entertainment for the punters between races, along with some very proud mammies and daddies. The county players, both hurlers and footballers, were a major attraction, with kids of all ages clambering to get jerseys, hurls and balls signed and have their photographs taken beside their heroes and with McCauley’s Chemist on site printing the photos for

t h e m a rt i n d O y l e hurling tOurnament: My father, the late Martin Doyle, a passionate advocate of the game of hurling, would have been well pleased to see the huge turnout at Bellefield GAA last month for the tenth U-10 hurling tournament in his memory, and as a dedicated and ardent promoter of the skills of the game he would have been delighted with the overall standard of hurling throughout the tournament. Full credit must go to the organisers and mentors of all the teams from each of the four clubs involved – Castletown, Monageer, Faythe Harriers and

Rapparees/Starlights, who had their charges well prepared and ready for the annual event and to all the mums and dads happy to see their sons play the wonderful game of hurling. Each club brought three teams to the competition which is an achievement in itself and approximately one hundred and fifty boys participated with every child getting a couple of games and each presented with a medal at the end by Martin’s two sons, Padraig and Jimbob, and grandson William Doyle. And in the new spirit of the GAA Go Games each club was presented with the Martin Doyle Memorial Cup by Martin’s

widow Maeve and had a team photo with it. The Doyle family would like to express their thanks to Bellefield GAA, the Field Committee who had the playing pitches in pristine condition and the Rapparees U-10 coaches Paul O’Reilly, Adrian Fenlon, Seamus Byrne, Stephen Murphy and Shane Murphy who organised the event and all the coaches from all of the clubs who participated and all who attended and all who played. It was an extremely enjoyable occasion for all as this competition is all about participation and learning, sharing and perfecting the skills of the game and most of all it’s about having fun and making friends for life. – Maria nolan

award-winning wexford novelist carmel harrington took great pleasure in launching the debut novel of her fellow committee member at the arklow golf club recently as she told the very large crowd in attendance that she couldn’t be happier to endorse brothers & sisters, the first

book from adele O’neill who joined the wexford literary Festival committee in 2016. ‘Go out and buy this amazing, really well written book you wont regret it I promise you. From the moment I first spoke to Adele at Enniscorthy Library and she told me she was writing I wanted her to succeed

and now I couldn’t be happier that she has secured a threebook deal from the world renowned House of Zues.’ Adele said that she was overwhelmed by all the wellwishers and all the lovely comments she had received since her book was released on 1st July. ‘I couldn’t have done it

without the support of my wonderful family and friends and in particular the assistance and kindness of Carmel Harrington who has become not just my mentor but my very close friend.’ Brothers & Sisters is on sale now and is a marvellous read – so go get it. – Maria nolan

Enniscorthy’s Got Talent yes, enniscorthy certainly has got talent in the form of popular bar manager, mc extraordinaire and gifted enniscorthy drama actor and director Fintan kelly. and now Fintan has gone one step further adding yet another string to his bow by appearing in his first film – release, which was featured lately in the galway Film Fleadh. Release, directed by Gerard Walsh and produced by Matthew Toman, is set in Dublin and tells the story of Andrew, a former boxer, sent down for armed robbery for eight years. When he returns home he finds that Mixed Martial Arts or MMA has taken over completely from boxing so he decides to try his hand at it and just as he is beginning to reform and find an outlet to keep himself out of and away from the Dublin crime scene his past comes back to jeopardise his new life. Fintan plays Patrick, Andrew’s Parole Officer, and one of the integral characters of the movie. ‘It was a major chal-

lenge for me having never done anything like this before but it was also a tremendous experience playing alongside well known Irish actors like Andie McCaffrey Byrne of Love/Hate, Dessie Byrne of Split and Urban Traffik, John Connors of Cardboard Gangsters and King of the Travellers and many others, and to be subjected to the serious talents of Gerard Walsh who directed A Day Like Today in 2014, Solitaire in 2015 and South in 2016 was an incredible honour for someone like me very new to the scene,’ Fintan told me. ‘I was both nervous and excited to see Release at the Galway Film Fleadh,’ he went on, ‘it was all kind of surreal to watch myself on screen for the first time at this most prestigious and long-running event. Galway Film Fleadh is in its 29th year and is a qualifying festival for the Academy Awards and already two films, An Island and Wave, have received Oscar nominations following wins at this year’s Film Fleadh. It doesn’t get much better than that!’

An onstage regular with Enniscorthy Drama Group (EDG), Fintan is quite new to the acting game with his very first appearance as John Williams in Glengarry Glenross three short years ago. But it was very clear to all at EDG from the onset that this guy was a natural. He was made for stage and born to perform. Since then he has gone on to give sterling performances in Private Wars, The Plough and the Stars, Come Along the Road, A Night on the Hill, Whistle in the Dark and The Cripple of Inismaan and recently directed the one-act Chop for the Wexford Literary Festival. His amazing stage presence and the ease with which he delivers his lines, maintains a variety of accents and his ability to expertly portray each of his characters to the audience is truly professional and belies the fact that he has had little or no training in this field and is still relatively new to it. But that is all about to change as Fintan has already completed a ten-week intensive drama course with the Irish Feature Film Academy, who are delighted with him and want him to stay on for another six months. And although he is adamant that this is very much a hobby for him as a very hard-working husband to Lorraine and father of two beautiful girls, Jennifer and Mary, acting is very much in his blood with both his aunt and cousin, Sheila and Gemma Delaney, well known on the local theatre scene and of course he is extremely proud of his famous cousin, Padraig Delaney, who came to prominence in The Wind That Shakes The Barley and is currently

working on Knightfall, a series about to be launched onto our screens about the illustrious Knights Templar and destined to rival Game of Thrones. I asked Fintan if he was ever nervous going on stage. ‘Yes’, he said, ‘but it is a good nervous, I can’t wait to get out there and do it.’ So what does the future hold for Fintan Kelly? ‘Well I’ve caught the acting bug for sure, I know I want to continue acting, whether that is on stage or on the big screen doesn’t really matter, and yes certainly it would be nice to make some money from it but essentially it is a hobby and as long as I continue to enjoy it and audiences continue to enjoy me well that’s really the main thing,’ according to Fintan. A natural talent in our midst and who knows maybe yet another rising star for Enniscorthy and may we wish him the luck to succeed because he certainly has the ability. Release is an hour and fifteen minutes in duration and I have already asked Fintan to explore the possibility of an Enniscorthy viewing – so watch this space for further details. – Maria nolan

A two-venue show at Wexford County Council Buildings, Carricklawn, and Wexford Arts Centre, 3rd July–25th August 2017. The Arts Department of Wexford County Council, in partnership with Wexford Arts Centre, is delighted to present And Creatures Dream... A New Language, a group exhibition which reveals in part how the visual arts are represented in County Wexford, with focus in this exhibition, on painting. The selected artists involved actively engage with the language of paint, wholeheartedly referencing its distinguished history, while making adventurous forays beyond. The artists included in the exhibition are Robert Armstrong, John Busher, Ciaran Bowen, Eamonn Carter, Serena Caulfield, Helen Gaynor, Aileen Murphy, Kate Murphy, Rosie O’Gorman, Breda Stacey, Emma Roche, George Warren and Michael Warren. The works draw widely from the inherited rich history of painting, yet still, as individuals; the artists engage and push the boundaries of what painting might be. They address the strengths, vulnerabilities, and challenges of the process, yet still indulge in landscape, myth, and allegory, and a constancy of intriguing stories, made all the more intriguing by seeming to be ‘half-told’. As Creatures Dream… A New Language will run in Wexford County Council, Carricklawn, and Wexford Arts Centre until Friday 25th August 2017. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm in Wexford County Council and Wexford Arts Centre, and from 10am-4pm on Saturdays in Wexford Arts Centre.

The Athenaeum Some years ago a Standing Order initiative was set up whereby

benefactors would sign up to donating €5 per month through their bank account. This was of great benefit to The Athenaeum as it guaranteed a set income. The Athenaeum is now asking people to sign up again and help keep the long-awaited and integral asset to the town alive. Constant bills, standing charges and insurance are very high and any help would be greatly appreciated. Standing Order forms are available at The Athenaeum or by phoning 087-2637178.

Another award for Colm enniscorthy novelist, journalist and essayist, colm toibin, is this year's winner of a us lifetime achievement award that celebrates the power of literature to foster peace, social justice and global understanding. Dayton Literary Peace Prize officials named Toibin for the R i c h a rd C H o l b ro o k e Distinguished Achievement Award. It is named after the late US diplomat who brokered the 1995 Bosnia peace accords.

Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation co-chair Sharon Rab said Toibin's writings "remind us of shared humanity and the possibility of reconciliation or simply of understanding, which are the first steps to making peace". "Our (writers') aim is to reach the reader's imagination, have an effect on the nervous systems of other people," Toibin, 62, said in a statement in response to winning the award.

"Good sentences offer us a way to imagine life in all its strangeness and ambiguity and possibility, alert us to the power of the imagination to transform and transcend our nature, offer us a blueprint not only for who we are but for who we might be, who we might become." Previous winners include Studs Terkel, Taylor Branch, Gloria Steinem and Elie Wiesel. The award carries a 10,000 US dollar cash prize. n
