comment Minister Paul Kehoe has confirmed that the construction of the Enniscorthy Flood Relief Scheme will commence next year. Following recent news of funding for flood defence in Wexford town, Minister Kehoe said the money for the Enniscorthy Flood Relief Scheme has already been ringfenced. “This is completely separate from the announcement in Wexford town and Minister Moran has assured me it will be delivered upon,” he added. And he confirmed that Minister at the OPW Kevin Boxer Moran is planning to visit Enniscorthy to see how over €40m of ringfenced funding will be spent. As part of the works, services and utilities along the promenade are being relocated this year – ahead of the full construction in 2019. A public display of the plans is scheduled for The Athenaeum, Monday 11th June to Sunday 17th June, and Enniscorthy Library, Tuesday 19th June to Sat 7th July. Everybody interested in the future of our town is encouraged to attend. See more details on page 23. – Frank Corcoran

strawberries and cream on sale throughout the weekend. No effort has been spared in preparing this year’s programme for the Golden Jubilee of the Strawberry Fair and while things may have changed commercially and socially since the first Fair way back in 1968, one thing remains constant – the strawberry is still King in Enniscorthy this time of year. To ensure the continuation of the strawberry king’s reign, the Festival has joined forces with the Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Festival and The Strawberry Roots Festival to bring this year’s exciting programme to fruition. The majority of events are free so we look forward to seeing you this year.

back uP your data! If you have a computer, it’s more than likely you have important files on it. And to lose them, would spell disaster. Hours, months, or years of work, files or photos just flushed down the drain. “But why should I backup my data” you say. Unfortunately hard drives can fail at any given time in their lifespan due to a diverse amount of reasons. Some reasons for failures being worn out or faulty parts. The more serious causes are usually the more silent or sudden to happen such as bad sectors, which are corrupted parts of the hard drive which cannot be accessed. Head crash which is when the read write head makes contact with the platter (Disk) and cuts right into it (imagine putting a knife to a record spinning at +75mph) Any sudden movements can do this, plus the damage can be irreparable for the most part. This is eliminated for the most part by an SSD (Solid State Drive). They are more expensive though, with less data to budget ratio. But they make up for it with ridiculous speeds and all round reliability. Defragmentation is also unnecessary on them. Also keep them cool, as temperature affects their lifespan more than anything else. But your data isn’t gone and dead. There are ways to get that back, with data recovery centres. They do have a very good chance of recovering your data. But at €250-€1000 for anywhere to 30-500 GB for one hard drive; it’s an option most can’t afford. There really isn’t an excuse to keep backups. It would be ideal to keep multiple backups as well as the primary, preferably keeping small files on the cloud. A suggestion would be Google offer their drive website with 15GB free to permanently keep or Onedrive by Microsoft. ferns Coputer Services has been in business in ferns since May 2007. established by david Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Ambassador to visit Enniscorthy Wexford will host a visit by the australian ambassador to ireland, mr richard andrews, in the company of local minister paul Kehoe. The visit will see the ambassador deliver a talk at Bree national school, attend the

‘ACHIEVING SUCCESS’ SEMINAR
David Hasslacher - Life Coach and seminar organiser
on Wednesday 25th april i was delighted to accept an invitation from friend and well-known Enniscorthy activist david hasslacher, to attend a seminar at the riverside park hotel titled ‘achieving success’. David as you may know is a member of the Roche family of Enniscorthy Castle and has many marvellous memories of growing up there. He has an affinity with both the Castle and the town and is involved with many local committees and organisations. As he said in his introduction despite his surname of Hasslacher his people have been in Wexford since 1169 and he is extremely proud of his Yellowbelly heritage. David is a qualified Life Coach and it is in this capacity that he organised the Achieving Success Seminar for over 200,
15 –18 -year-old students from Mean Scoil Gharman, Colaiste Bride and Colaiste Abban with a fabulous line-up of inspirational speakers including Minister Paul Kehoe, Sam McCauley, Christy Kavanagh, Jimmy Kearns and John O`Connor. As first speaker, Minister Paul Kehoe thanked David for the opportunity to speak to so many young people about to take the next step on their life paths and said that it really isn’t about either success or failure but ‘how you respond to both - and indeed it is often your failures and how you respond to them that shows your true character’. As former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, ‘Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.’ Local entrepreneur Sam McCauley’s message was all about seizing opportunities. ‘Believe in yourself and/or your product and simply go for it. When a big leap is called for, make it.’ Sam continued, ‘Don’t be afraid of failure and be fluid in your thinking, things keep on changing and unless you change with them you get left behind.’ Sam went on to tell the students that it isn’t really about how bright you are, success is gradual, achieved step by step and by continually setting tar-
gets and challenges for oneself. He also reminded the audience to always act with honour and integrity even when there`s no one watching. Christy Kavanagh owns one of the largest Christmas Tree plantations in the country, 110 acres all under Christmas trees which he operates as a family business with his wife, son and daughter. After many rocky starts and many hard battles with depression, alcohol, debt and failure, Christy with a lot of help from good friends pulled through and now enjoys a very full and suc-
cessful life and his main message to those present was to have good friends, people that you can depend on and turn to in times of crises. His advice was to ‘Mind your own business and you will have a business to mind.’ Christy also stressed the importance of dedicating time to yourself, ‘Those of us who work for ourselves tend to work 24/7, it is vital for both your mental and physical health to take time away from the business on a regular basis.’ Christy now practises daily yoga, pilates and meditation.
The message from the final two speakers, Jimmy Kearns, successful fruit farmer and John O’Connor, Manager of Enniscorthy Enterprise & Technology Centre, was similar – the most important things in life and career it seems are courage and belief. The courage to ‘go for it’ whatever it is without fear of failure and the belief that you can do it whatever it is was the overall consensus coming loud and clear from this most entertaining and enlightening seminar - in Barack Obama’s words always believe that ‘yes you can’.
A very well done once again to Life Coach David Hasslacher for organising the excellent event and if I was pressed for a criticism I would have to say that perhaps going forward it would be nice to have an entrepreneurial female speaker included and thankfully we have lots of them in Wexford from business women, to politicians to designers to successful authors. So it’s over to you David to get the gender balance better for your next, much anticipated seminar! – Maria nolan

Enniscorthy CBS Champions On the playing fields… A remarkable run of recent soccer victories brought the Bank of Ireland FAI Schools Tom Ticher Junior National Cup to Enniscorthy CBS for the first time. Indeed it’s the first time any Co. Wexford school has ever won this prestigious competition. Under the watchful eyes of teachers Lisa Burke and Shane Murphy, the team beat Milford from Co. Donegal in the All-Ireland semi-final before Kieran Murphy fired home a goal of real quality in the final against the favourites, St Joseph’s of Galway, which ultimately proved enough for St. Mary’s CBS, Enniscorthy, to claim the title.
In the classroom…
On 2nd May 2018 Enniscorthy CBS held its Awards Night to acknowledge the huge number of students who excelled academically during the year and those who contributed positively to the school in other ways also. Legendary Wexford hurler and former student at the school, Adrian Fenlon, gave a motivational talk to the students before assisting with the awards presentation.

William Dornan receives the Michael Talbot Award, sponsored by Gary McCauley.
Team captain, Danny Bruce, receives the All-Ireland trophy.
Robert McGuinness receives the Student of the Year Award from Adrian Fenlon and John Ryan.
Enniscorthy CBS is participating in the ‘One Book, One Community’ initiative which involves reading ‘Spirit of the Titanic’ by Nicola Pierce. And the school certainly got into the Titanic spirit by holding a Titanic-themed Day and Exhibition on 25th April. Battle re-enactments will take place in the towns of New Ross and Enniscorthy over the course of the weekend, to commemorate the 220th anniversary of the 1798 Rebellion. The programme of events commences on Friday 15th June at 7pm, in Market Square, Enniscorthy, where you are invited to join Rebel and Redcoat re-enactors, for a wreath-laying ceremony, commemorating all those who died during the 1798 Rebellion. In New Ross on Saturday 16th June at 2pm, experience rebellion up close and personal. Pike-charging Rebels will face off against musket-firing Redcoats as they re-enact the epic Battle of New Ross. On Sunday 17th June, experience the sights, sounds and smells of battle as the Rebels and Redcoats re-enact the epic Battle
of Vinegar Hill. This battle extravaganza involves Cavalry Assaults, Cannon Bombardments, Musket Volleys and Pike Charges. It starts on Vinegar Hill at 2pm. ‘thE lonGEst day’ To mark the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Vinegar Hill, the National 1798 Rebellion Centre is hosting ‘The Longest Day’, a memorial ceremony remembering all those who died during the 1798 Rebellion. This annual event is aptly entitled ‘The Longest Day’ as the 21st of June, the day of the battle is indeed the longest day from both an astronomical perspective, and for those 30,000 men, women, and children from all sides who took part in the battle. This year’s ceremony takes place on Thursday 21st June, beginning at 7.20pm at the bottom of Vinegar Hill Lane, where pikemen will assemble and march to the top of Vinegar
Hill. All are most welcome to join in and march along with the pikemen, particularly those from overseas whose ancestors fought in the Rebellion. At 7.30pm, representatives from the different religious communities and councils will gather for a blessing, which will be followed by poetry recitation and a wreath-laying ceremony. Following the commemoration on Vinegar Hill, all are invited to Enniscorthy Castle for light refreshments. Hundreds of spectators are expected to be present at these commemorative events, which remember a defining moment in our nation’s history, and provides an opportunity to come together as a community to remember those who lost their lives, in an inclusive and appropriate way. History in safe hands at Innovate Wexford Park On Saturday 12th May history came to life once again, 100 years later, as Wexford’s famous 4-in-a-row football All Ireland titles were commemorated at Innovate Wexford Park. As our Senior footballers took on Laois in this year’s All Ireland Football series the football faithful took a look back on the Wexford glory years 1915 - 1918. A special Commemorative Programme, compiled by sports journalist Ronan Fagan and County PRO PJ Howlin and sponsored by the GAA, was distributed free of charge to those in attendance. A special commemorative jersey commissioned from O’Neills was worn by the Wexford team facing Laois, and the Ballindaggin Pipe Band led both teams around the field in parade before the game began. Classic Shows at Wells House Pic: Maria Nolan.
Owner of Wells House, Sabine Rosler, admiring one of the spectacular exhibits at the first ever Wells Classic Bike Show. Pic: Maria Nolan.
The May Bank Holiday Monday dawned bright, noisy and colourful at Wells House as it hosted its first ever Classic Motor Bike Show. Owner Sabine Rossler said she was delighted with the level of interest in this new venture. 'We've had several very successful Classic Car Shows', Sabine said, ‘but this is our first Bike Show and we had no idea how it would go'.
But as the Harleys and Hondas revved up the Wells elegant driveway, Sabine’s only worry was going to be carparking as the punters arrived in numbers to view the spectacle. As with Classic Cars, people with Classic Bikes invest a huge amount of time and effort into them not to mention money and are only too ready to talk about their pride and joy.
A fabulous event and a fitting tribute to Wexford`s sporting history, well done to all involved and well done to our Minor hurlers who had a good win over Laois on the day and hard luck to the Senior football team who despite a marvellous first half performance were eventually beaten in extra time. – Maria Nolan
And such was the case at Wells on that May Monday, everyone was happy to browse, chat and admire in the glorious weather. Sabine was well pleased with the Bank Holiday weekend with 1,200 cars in the car park the previous day for the Teddy Bears Picnic, the largest crowd ever for the annual event and a week later, 13th May, it was the turn of the now annual Classic Car Show as once again
the fabulous Wells House was bathed in summer sunshine as Cadillacs, Chevvies, Mustangs, Rovers, Bentleys and Beetles hummed into their respective positions for the large crowd to ogle and admire. Isn't it wonderful to see a Wexford attraction attracting so many visitors and my compliments to Sabine and Ulrich Rosler and the Wells staff for their innovation and vision,
coupled with their tremendous work ethic – a winning combination indeed. I look forward to an interesting summer of fun at Wells in particular the 1798 Re-enactment on Sunday 10th June by Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society to commemorate the 220th anniversary of the Wexford Rebellion. – Maria Nolan

Rathnure Summer Musical!
Summer is (allegedly!!!) on the way and that can only mean one thing: The Rathnure Panto Society Summer Musical is back. Since Torn Dreams in 2010, the group has continued its run of original Musicals, taking hits from across the decades and producing unforgettable stories to these soundtracks. Now with their 9th Musical, its' time to go back to the Awesome 80's with Uptown Girl: The Musical! It tells the story of two girls, Rita, a poor, hardworking shoemaker struggling to raise her family after their parents passed away. Carol, a rich, sophisticated girl who becomes a World Irish Dancing Champion. And a young local garage boy Mickey who they both fall for. As their paths cross during the difficult recession, each character, with the help of a 1980's soundtrack, has to rise above it. So if you rocked to Sweet Child of Mine, felt crestfallen on a Manic Monday, or cheesed it out with Sister Sledge and Frankie, then this is the show for you. Also, all profits will be going to The Hope Centre and Wexford Hospice, so you will also be supporting a great cause! The show runs for 6 nights: June 15th, 17th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 24th at 7.45pm nightly. Call the Box Office on 0870687801 or 0876954112. You can also find more information on their Facebook page.

He is proud to be a member of The Sword Swallowers International Association. A lot of people have asked Jack as a Magican how he does these things, more people ask why? His reply is always the same ... “Because I can.” Jack will be on stage at the Strawberry Fair / Street Rhythms and Roots Festival at the Market Square on Sunday, 3rd June, at approx 3.30pm. Chamber Chairperson Maree Lyng and Town Manager Liz Hore complimented all for their tremendous commitment to the Fair both saying that only a few short years ago it was thought that the long-running Festival was fast becoming a thing of the past. ‘Now it
appears to be reborn and bursting with energy, vitality and fun and of course love,’ Liz Hore concluded. Eamonn Doyle speaking on behalf of Strawberry Roots and John O`Connor on behalf of Street Rhythms said how it has been a most excellent decision for the three festivals to come together to create ‘a big vibrant Street Party to kick off the Enniscorthy summer’ with all groups working in harmony to generate something a little special for the town. Chairman Keith Doyle was then called on to officially launch the 51st Festival thanking all the sponsors for their generous contributions that make it possible for the Festival to continue running especially Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Enniscorthy Credit Union, Carlsberg, Diageo, Riverside Park Hotel, Treacy’s Hotel and all who sponsor the Strawberry Princesses and all involved in giving the town of Enniscorthy a great family weekend and a Festival to be proud of. Are You It would be impossible to write an article here about music, singing or entertainment without mentioning one of Enniscorthy's greatest, Matty Kinnaird. Born in Calton, Glasgow, in 1919, he was one of five children. His mother was Mary Catherine O'Brien, a native of Enniscorthy. She took him home to his cousins in Hospital Lane when he was ill as a young boy, and so began his life-long love affair with the town of Enniscorthy. A multi-instrumentalist, poet, actor and singer it was said that if the doctor handed him his stethoscope, Matty would get a tune out of it. He learned to play the violin from T.P. Kinsella in the Market Square. He had his own band consisting of Neddy Dobbs (accordion), Donnie Kearns (trumpet), Toddy Hennessy (drums), Kevin Carthy (trumpet), Billy Millar (drums), Tom Askins (trumpet) and Mrs. Cardiff (piano). They were the resident band in the Athenaeum. It was while touring around the county doing shows in the 60's that Matty and Ita, who was a singer in the band, became an item and got married in 1968 and had four children, Matthew, John, Noel and Mary (twins). Like Peter O' Loughlin in the famous Percy French song, "Mountains Of Mourne", Matty could stop the whole town with one wave of his hand, such was his popularity among the people. While visiting Ita recently, she said Matty was always happy and she could hear him

He was talented enough to go anywhere in the world and make a fortune, but chose to stay at home, and at the end of his days, he'd ask Ita to put him by the front window so he could look out at the children playing on the green in St. Aidan's Villas. Nothing could have made him happier. Here's to a legend, Matty Kinnaird.

This weekend’s Strawberry Fair / Street Rhythms and Roots Fest…
Carmel Harrington, the renowned international novelist, will open the 51st Strawberry Fair/Street Rhythms and Roots Festival in Enniscorthy on June 1st. The author of six best-selling novels, Carmel is well known to TV audiences as she regularly appears on TV3’s ‘Midday
Show’. Her books, all regular chart-toppers, have captured the hearts of readers worldwide and have been translated into eight languages to date. Her latest offering “A Thousand Roads Home” is due for release in October and pre publicity strongly suggests it will be another best-seller.
Plans for the 51st Strawberry Fair/Street Rhythms and Roots Festival are now complete. The appearance of the Garda Band and the Army No. 1 Band are particular highlights, while the visit of Willie Daly, the internationally renowned match-maker from Lisdoonvarna, is certain to create no end of excitement.
Organisers and supporters of the Strawberry Roots music festival L-R: Liam Ellis, Roisin Williams, Eamon Ellis, Niall Toner, Eamonn Doyle.
He will be making his first appearance at the Fair and will be ‘plying his trade’ at an afternoon tea dance in The Athenaeum Hall on Sunday, June 3rd. See pages 18 and 19 for full programme details. Music will play a major part in this year’s Fair with the Roots element hosting 30 gigs at venues throughout the town over the three days of the festival (pick up a copy of the Roots brochure at lots of places around town). Expect to hear Blues / Bluegrass / Rock’n’Roll/ Folk / Jazz/ Country / Reggae/ Rockabilly/Americana / Roots Rock – something for everyone. This is in addition to live music every day, evening and night in the Market Square where the Bob Marley tribute band “Natty Wailer and the Reggae Vibes” will bring an international dimension to this year’s Fair when they appear on the bandstand
on Sunday night, June 3rd. Other top musical attractions include ‘The Gentlemen Callers’, ‘The Remedy Club’ and ‘JMA’. The Street Rhythms offering this year is even better than last year in that it is more creative and imaginative and full of fun for all the family to enjoy. As part of their programme, the Martina Leacy Dance Academy will link up with St. Patrick’s Special School for an exhibition of ballroom dancing on Friday night, June 1st, while on Saturday, June 2nd, their afternoon-long programme of entertainment will commence at 11.30am with many new innovations and the return of some old favourites including ‘The Wonderful Corvenios’ an incredibly talented magician. On Sunday, June 3rd, the Street Rhythms programme commences in The Market Square at 1pm with the won-
derful jazz group, Ain’t Misbehavin, and will continue throughout the afternoon with dancing, music, fun and with Jack Wise, magician and comedian, performing at 3.30pm. So there will be something for all age groups to enjoy. The 2018 Strawberry Queen will be crowned on the closing night of the Fair with the Princesses having been interviewed the previous night by Liam Sharkey and Willie Daly on the bandstand in the Market Sq. They will be guests at the Strawberry Ball in The Riverside Park Hotel on Thursday night, May 31st, when all ‘Princesses’ will make their debut before a sell-out crowd. All in all, the 2018 S t r a w b e r r y F a i r / S t re e t Rhythms and Roots Festival promises to be an event not to be missed over the June Bank Holiday. n

Rebellion 220 in Enniscorthy The summer season is really hotting up for Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society who have already been to Dysert Castle, Co. Clare, to participate in a Norman sacking of the Castle – the family stronghold of the O’Dee Clan. On Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May EHRS went on invitation to Monasterevin for a two day event organised by Lord Edwards Own Reenactment Group to mark the town’s role in the 1798 Rebellion. Enniscorthy Re-enactors were delighted to participate in the Living History Garden P a r t y i n t h e g ro u n d s o f Monasterevin House, historic walks with battlefield historian Barry Walsh, Battle Reenactment and wreath laying ceremony at the site of the Battle of Monasterevin and a second wreath laid at the monu m e n t t o F r. E d w a r d Prendergast, hanged for his involvement with the ‘98 Rebels. At the Reception at Moore Abbey, former residence of Count John McCormack, Redcoats and Rebels mixed and mingled enjoying music and dance and a dram or two in the grand hall which houses the piano where the Count himself sat and sang and composed. A special treat indeed.
The next road trip for the E n n i s c o r t h y g ro u p i s t o Prosperous, Co. Kildare, for their Heritage Festival with a re-enactment of the Battle of Prosperous. On Sunday 10th June Wells House haa invited the group to perform a 1798 re-enactment on the front lawn as part of their Carnival of Culture weekend. And of course on 15th/16th/17th June Enniscorthy will once again be the heartland of redcoats and rebels and muskets and pikes
as groups from all over the country converge for the Battle of Vinegar Hill (220th anniversary). EHRS will be joined by friends from Kilkenny, Carlow, Monasterevin, Prosperous, Ashbourne, Mayo and Limerick along with many groups from across the water who come to swell the redcoat battalions and maybe even some renegade French will arrive to join the ranks of the rebels as the action heats up on Vinegar Hill on Sunday 17th June.
On Saturday 16th June in New Ross EHRS redcoats and rebels will fight it out on the streets in a re-enactment of the Battle of Ross. An extremely full and varied programme of events for reenactors and spectators alike and particularly so with the reveal of all the new information on Vinegar Hill as a major European battlefield site about to be unleashed. Exciting times – don’t miss them, put the dates in your diary now. – Maria Nolan
Enniscorthy Re-enactors Tim Corrigan, Paul Murphy, Ray Murphy, Bridget Murphy and Maria Nolan flying the flag for Vinegar Hill at Monasterevin’s Rebellion 220 commemorations.

A TOP CLASS LINE-UP AT WEXFORD GAA FORUM The discussion panel couldn’t have been more impressive at the annual Pre-Championship Forum of the Dublin Branch of the Wexford Supporters at the Talbot Hotel, Stillorgan, on Tuesday 1st May. Tadgh Furlong, Kevin Doyle, Jim Bolger, Matty Forde, Matthew O’Hanlon and Davy Fitzgerald – an inspirational cauldron of Wexford sporting heroes, well apart from Davy who is most certainly an honorary Wexfordman at this stage, and who loves the buzz around Wexford Park on big match days: ‘Having been with both Clare
and Waterford I can say that the atmosphere in Wexford Park is second to none and myself and the Wexford players just love it and want it to continue and we will be working our hardest to ensure that it does.’ Jim Bolger described himself as ‘Ireland’s biggest risk taker’ saying that he just loves the competition and the bigger the better. ‘I get a huge thrill seeing the very best in the world beaten by a horse from Oylegate,’ Jim continued, demonstrating his immense pride in his own place. Tadgh Furlong, coming from Adamstown and going to school
in Good Counsel, couldn’t help but play GAA, ‘sure everybody did and I enjoyed it’. ‘I love watching GAA now and particularly love seeing Wexford win.’ Kevin Doyle made it as far as U-21 football trials for his home county before turning to his chosen sport and had great praise for fellow Wexford man Mick Wallace who ‘gave chaps from Wexford the belief that they could play for Ireland’. Matty Forde believes that despite the unsuccessful League campaign, Wexford footballers are making good progress.

‘They’ve had a tough season so far and their biggest defeat was only by 4 points. We have 20 new players in the panel this year and I honestly believe we can beat Laois and history will be with us on the day as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Wexford 4 in a row.’ Matthew O’Hanlon was quietly confident for this year’s Championship saying that he believes that Wexford players are now playing without fear, ‘We have proven that we can compete with the best and beat the best and we are in it now to win it.’
Davy Fitzgerald expressed huge disappointment for himself and his players on the performance in the League semi-final against Kilkenny but said, ‘I like nothing better than playing Kilkenny and we are looking forward to playing them again and all I will ask of my charges is that they leave every inch they have on the field that day, you can’t ask for any more than that.’ New Wexford Commercial Manager, Eanna Martin, briefly introduced himself and the new concept that is Cairde Loch Garman – an amalgamation of
Wexford Supporters and Club Wexford and launched the new Corporate Packages – Gold, Silver and Bronze which are now available at €10,000, €5,000 and €2,500. MC for the occasion, RTE’s Darragh Maloney, launched the Wexford Football 4-in-a-row replica jersey which has been especially commissioned from O’Neill’s to be worn by our footballers at Innovate Wexford Park on Saturday 12th May when they take on Laois in the first ro u n d o f t h e L e i n s t e r Championship. – Maria Nolan

A Letter from Sean Doyle… Dear Editor, For some time I have been greatly concerned with regard to a decision of the Department of Education to remove history as a fundamental subject at Junior Certificate level. President Michael D. Higgins must be applauded for raising the issue recently at the launch of the four-volume Cambridge History of Ireland, when he pointed out that knowledge of history “is intrinsic to our shared citizenship, to be without such knowledge is to be permanently burdened with a lack of perspective, empathy and wisdom. Moreover to be without historical training, the careful and necessary capability to filter and critically interpret a variety of sources is to leave citizens desperately ill-equipped to confront a world without historical perspective or even regard for the truth.” The Department’s decision will come into effect from next September. To me it is incomprehensible, indeed inconceivable, particularly when we were all recently stimulated to get up close to the historical significance of recent commemorations – the Bicentenary of the 1798 Rebellion and the Centenary of the 1916 Rising. Such a decision comes across as peculiar when the State is so occupied in promoting the decade of centenaries which included a programme to mark the achievement of Irish Independence while at the same time its Department of Education made a decision to devalue history by removing it as a compulsory subject.
Blood donors from Co. Wexford honoured at an awards ceremony on 20th April last.
Beneath My Angels Wings
The local Beneath My Angels Wings group hosted a 5km family walk in Enniscorthy’s Sports Hub on the 6th of May to fundraise for a cuddle cot for Wexford General Hospital. The event was kindly hosted by Ms. Liz Hore, Enniscorthy Municipal District Manager, and the concept for the run was the brainchild of Alison Dwyer and Mag Owens who also worked hard to make the event such a success with a crowd of 110 people taking part, and €788 raised on the day. Thanks also to all the volunteers who played their part and all who baked and made sandwiches, etc. Special thanks to O’Callaghan’s Centra, Templeshannon, for refreshments and Stafford’s Cakes, Gorey, and the many local sponsors. Thanks also to Sabrina Sludds who looked after the catering tent on the day. Planning is already underway for 2019!
Professor Diarmaid Ferriter writing in the Irish Times on the 5th May stated: “Deliberately distorted history can be challenged, through good teaching and engagement with the wide availability of accessible source material, and in recent years the State has funded many of the projects to make this possible. But this also means that what we have at present is contradictory: politicians falling over themselves to tell us how important history is and how we must value and encourage it; but not following this logic through in the education system by making sure all young people are exposed to history in a structured sustained and meaningful way.” Ruairí Quinn was Minister for Education and Skills when the decision was made to remove history as a core subject at Junior Certificate level. An Irish Times editorial of 7th May asserted: “The history curriculum taught in our schools is an extremely good one. It treats the complexity of the past in a comprehensive and detailed manner and does not attempt to impose a simplistic patriotic narrative of the events that shaped the country. It is strange, to put it at its mildest, that the decision to eliminate history as a core subject at a time of unprecedented interest in the past. This applies not only to the huge public interest in the events of the decade of centenaries but to the surge of interest in family history.” “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history”– George Orwell. Yours sincerely, Seán Doyle, Esmonde Road, 10th May, 2018.

On Friday 4th May Bunclody Golf Club basked in rare and welcome sunshine as golfers from all over the county and beyond took to the immaculate fairways for Wexford GAA’s annual fundraising Golf Classic. With 48 teams booked in, all tee boxes sponsored and J. Donohoe Motors BMW on board as overall competition sponsor, it was indeed a successful event under Des Croke, Jim Byrne and new Commercial Manager Eanna Martin. The lush greens and rich landscape of the Bunclody Club were the perfect setting and all teams enjoyed good golf, fabulous food and a variety of prizes and some excellent social networking.

enniscortHy flood defence scHeMe public display & information event - june 2018 Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford has a long history of flooding. Extreme floods have occurred in 1924, 1947, 1965, 2000, 2002, 2009, 2011, 2014, and more recently in December 2015. Flooding represents a risk to health and safety, and has resulted in significant property damage and traffic disruption in the town. In 2004, the Office of Public Works (OPW), in conjunction with Wexford County Council, undertook a study of the flooding problem in Enniscorthy. A preliminary design for the Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme was developed by the OPW and exhibited for public consultation in 2009. In response to feedback from the public, the preliminary design was further improved and went on public display in 2012. In November 2015, Design Consultants Mott MacDonald and Roughan & O’Donovan were appointed by Wexford County Council to develop the detailed design for the Scheme. The Scheme has been developed to take into consideration feedback received from public consultations to date.

You forget all about the rain when you get a spell of fine weather!! Schools are almost out for the summer except for exam students and the primary schools so holiday season is upon us, happy days!! From a veterinary perspective the heat brings its own challenges. no different from ourselves animals don't need to eat as much in the hot weather, but we often tend to feed them the same amount, Winter and Summer. This leads to different problems including excess weight gain and also skin problems. Feeding a diet high in protein at this time of year can lead to a condition we commonly refer to as "hot spots". It is when the skin breaks out in patches of raw oozing skin, usually around head, neck or flanks. It’s very sore and can be slow to heal if not treated quickly. There are medicated shampoos and medication that it generally responds well to but the best form of treatment is prevention. Feeding your dog less this time of year is better. I often advise owners to give up to a third less nuts (depending on which brand they're feeding) and to add vegetables such as potato, cabbage, etc. to bulk up the feed so they are not looking up at you starving! The vegetables are a complex carbohydrate and digest well with protein. Giving less food helps the digestive tract and the conditions such as obesity, diabetes and joint problems, which are all too common nowadays in our domestic pets, could be reduced with good feeding practices. Cutting out scraps, titbits, treats is very hard with those longing eyes trained up at you but in the long run it does make the difference to them. The old adage, "You are what you eat" is as true for them as it is for us! Also, the difference between the dog and cat foods is the more expensive ones have a much better quality grade of protein, fats and carbs along with the specific vitamins and minerals they require for their different stages of life. Often the better ones are grain free which is easier and more digestible food so you often feed a lot less of it. In turn it goes much further and lasts a lot longer so in the long run saves you money. Timely reminders are vaccination of pets going into kennels. Flea and tick treatments from now on. Ticks are becoming more prevalent too. For this you can use spot on treatments or tablet medication that offers protection between 4-12 weeks depending on what product you pick. Ask at the desk and we will be very happy to help choose the best one that suits your pet. Finally just a note to say congratulations to our receptionist Anne Sullivan who recently got married, a great day celebrating was had by all. Enjoy the holidays kids.... happy days!! n

AT A CROSSROADS At 47 I found myself at a crossroads, so many questions going through my head. But I was never one for lying down and doing nothing. So, I talked to friends and family and on more than one occasion I heard someone say why don’t you investigate going back to education. This was something I had never considered before. I remember asking myself, “Really, could someone my age actually go back to education?” The one thing I did decide was if I was going to do this I
would have to do something that I would enjoy and something I had an interest in. So, I made enquires and investigated my options. I found a good few places offering full-time courses but nothing that would suit me. But then a friend said to me Enniscorthy VC was having an open night and advised me to go along and check it out. So, I did, and I will admit I was a bag of nerves that evening because I thought I would be completely out of place, but how wrong I was. First, I saw other people my age and older checking out all the different courses and straight away that put my mind at ease. I was made feel so welcome by all the staff and tutors who answered all my questions and concerns. I was taken aback by the facilities and by the number of PLC courses that were available. MEDIA PRODuCTION In the end I decided I would love to do a Media Production course as I have always had a great interest in a lot of things that were media-based especially radio. So that evening I went home and before I could talk myself out of it I went online and filled out the application form. I got called for a group interview a few weeks later. Another few weeks passed, and I got word I had been accepted. I started in September 2017 and up until the day I started I was doubting myself and came close to talking myself out of it. But now as I write this in April 2018 I am so glad I did not talk myself out of it. I have found I can do certain things that I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be ever doing; my computer skills have increased dramatically which was always something I wanted to do. I have discovered I have a keen interest in Researching, Movies, Radio, Journalism, I totally enjoyed every minute of it. I never in my life had to do, or knew how to do, assignments, nor did I completely understand what a module or portfolio was. Well here I am after completing 9 modules and countless assignments which is something I thought I would never have the chance to do.
WHERE TO NExT? Where do I go from here? I’m not sure, I will wait and see what my results are. But one thing is for sure 12 months ago I never thought I would be sitting and writing something like this. So, I hope some doors might open for me, if they don’t I will keep knocking until one does. If you are like me and you find yourself at a crossroads in life, you might be thinking is back to education an option? My advice is don’t rule it out straight away. It won’t be an option for everyone for different reasons but if you think it could be an option for you investigate it and see where it takes you. Enniscorthy and the surrounding areas are so lucky to have such facilities and opportunities available at Enniscorthy Vocational College for all ages. For leaving cert students if you are not sure what you want to do next year well why not check out all the PLC courses available in EVC. It will give you another year for you to make up your mind and it might even change your mind on what direction you want to go in. EDuCATION FOR EVERyONE The mature person doesn’t let age stop him or her. Education is for everyone and for those like me who did not get a fair crack at it the first time around well there are so many opportunities out there now. Remember age is only a number, try EVC and apply as a mature student, I can guarantee the college will do its best to make you feel welcome. I do understand going back to fulltime education is not an option for everyone. But for those adults reading this now who might think yes that could be me, well I say go for it. I would love to continue in media some way but at this moment I am not sure which direction it will take me. I know there are opportunities out there, I will see what comes my way. One thing is for sure I won’t give up now. As they say: Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. – Paddy O’Hanlon Mature Student Enniscorthy VC Media Production 2017 / 2018 Tutor: Mr Liam Sharkey.

PLC COuRSES NOT JuST FOR LEAVING CERT STuDENTS When I was going to school the chance of going on to do your leaving cert and getting in to college was just a dream for many. Most of the children I went to school with came from families just like mine. One person in the house worked while mothers took care of children. Money was tight for everyone, so it was tough going for any family to afford to keep their children in school. Those who were lucky enough to go on to college were mostly the ones who could afford it. Most wanted to be teachers, doctors, nurses and even some brave ones fancied their chances at becoming solicitors. Back in 1987 I was 17 and job opportunities were scarce but there were jobs for those who wanted to work. So, like a lot of other teenagers at the time, if you were offered a job you took it. You felt obliged to leave school and take the job, so you could help your parents with household bills etc. Over the next 30 years I worked at a few different jobs. I was not rich, but I was happy and content. In 2015 my life started to change, I lost someone very close to me who passed away very suddenly. That was the first hurdle I fell over, but I managed to climb back up. Then in late 2016, out of nowhere and through no fault of my own, I lost my job. Then in early 2017 I got word that someone else close to me had passed away suddenly. At that time, I felt like my whole world was crumbling in around me.

Senior figures from Carlow Institute of Technology met ministers in Government Buildings on 24th May in a bid to progress plans for a university for the South East. A delegation from the college held an hour-long meeting with Higher Education Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor and Defence Minister Paul Kehoe, during which their proposals to bring a new university to the South East were discussed. A joint application from Carlow IT and Waterford IT is being assessed by the Higher
Education Authority (HEA). If the bid is successful, the university would bring major economic benefits to the south east, including Wexford, through the creation of new educational opportunity and jobs. “A strong Technological University will enhance the south east and provide huge new opportunities in terms of education and jobs for the people of Wexford and surrounding counties,” Minister Kehoe said.
“The Government is working hard to deliver jobs and economic growth across every region of the country to the benefit of communities and families. This will further enhance our plans to ensure the recovery continues to spread beyond Dublin.” The delegation spoke of their desire to purchase a site in Wexford to accommodate a new purpose-built campus. Both Ministers voiced their support for the plans for the purchase of a new site. These plans are expected to come to a conclusion in the coming months. n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond RefeRendum Result So, after intense campaigning, the result is in. Two thirds of the electorate are in favour of removing the eight from the constitution. I must admit to being surprised at, if not the result, the sheer size of it. My prediction that it would be close was clearly way off the mark. The Oireachtas will now legislate for change and hopefully the proposals will be such as to heal some of the wounds caused during this fairly viscous campaign. The fear from the third of the electorate who voted no is that future governments now have a free hand to introduce any changes they desire in this area without having to return to the electorate. And this is the clear position which those who voted yes clearly favoured. It’s unlikely that anyone who is alive today will ever get a chance to vote on this issue again in their lifetime. So it’s over to the politicians now. Politicians’ RewaRds We have all seen lately figures published which show the wealth of our politicians. Apart from the pension pots that these people have their true wealth cannot be determined. This is because while someone may be listed as having property worth a given figure we have no idea how much is owed on that property. Therefore, jumping to conclusions is dangerous. However, one thing that we do know is that
the pensions are an obscenity. The fact that a minister has to serve for only two years to qualify is outrageous and the huge benefits accrued by backbench TDs, who are no more than voting fodder, is totally unjustified. They will of course argue that their job security is zilch and that they could be turfed out at the next election, so the benefits are highly justified because of the sacrifice that they are making. The response to that is that practically every job in the state, outside of the public service, is like that. No person nowadays has security of employment and most people who lose their jobs are without the cushion that our exalted public representatives have built up around themselves. For my part I have never seen a poor ex T.D. or Senator. In years gone by yes but certainly not in the last twenty years or so. No politician in the Oireachtas would swap places with any private sector employee in the country and I am prepared to gamble that none of them would be capable of making more money in any other arena. One elected T.D. honestly stated, a couple of years ago, that he thought he had won the lotto when he was elected to the Dail. He couldn’t believe that he was actually being paid travelling expenses on top of his salary to drive to work and all other kinds of expenses for things that prior to that, in the private sector he had to pay for himself.

View from the Hill Compare that with real patriots like those called upon by American Presidents to serve in cabinet. Most of them come from extremely highly paid positions to much lesser paid jobs in the interests of serving their country. For instance, back in the sixties, Robert McNamara, who was President of the Ford Motor Company on a salary of $250,000 a year quit that job and served as American Defence Secretary on a wage of $25,000 annually. Dean Rusk, Secretary of State, the same. These men served in those hugely responsible positions for over seven years each sacrificing $1.5m dollars each. Why? They wanted to serve their country. We could do with a few people like that here.
fianna fÁil convention The Fianna Fail Convention will be held soon to select candidates for the next general election. At this point we have no idea as to when that will be called but we can assume that the party is making sure to be battle ready when the date is announced. The only speculation really in relation to this selection process is to figure out who will be joining James Browne and Lisa McDonald of Wexford on the ticket. Or indeed will anyone. Being a bit premature maybe, but the reality is that James as the outgoing T.D. is guaranteed his place and Lisa, because of the gender quota issue, will be added to the ticket if she is not selected by the convention. Fianna Fail have a problem. That
problem is to decide on the best tactics to regain the seat which they lost in 2011. Under normal circumstances they should have two seats in this constituency but of course to get back to that position they must play their cards correctly. Assuming the party will go for a three-candidate strategy (one candidate each from Enniscorthy and Wexford only would be a disaster) their dilemma will be as to whether they should select Malcolm Byrne from Gorey, as they did last time out, or opt for a New Ross representative. The only credible candidate within Fianna Fail in the New Ross area is Michael Sheehan. Sheehan, for whatever reason, was treated extremely unfairly by the party last time around and was effectively boxed in by strategy and pushed off the pitch. This left the entire New Ross district of the county without a candidate and Fianna Fail suffered as a result. Malcolm Byrne did reasonably well last time out in the Gorey area but his performance outside of his home district was poor. His problem is compounded by the fact that Fine Gael’s Michael D’Arcy, now a junior minister, has been literally cementing himself into office in his home district of Gorey over the last number of years. Therefore, Byrne has little scope to pick up extra votes from his own doorstep with nothing showing that he has improved his pro-
file elsewhere in the county. On the other hand, the New Ross area is wide open with none of the political parties, other than Fianna Fail, having a credible candidate to offer the electorate. Furthermore, the electorate in this district are literally demanding a local candidate and Fianna Fail would be foolish to ignore this. In New Ross Michael Sheehan would be a credible candidate, for any party or as an Independent, and it’s difficult to see how he could resist the local demand that he should run from an electorate in a large area of the county which sees itself as being totally ignored by all the m a j o r p a r t i e s s i n c e 2 0 11 . Furthermore, Sheehan has made a strong impression on many outside of his home area with his campaign to right the wrongs imposed on pensioners by the cutting of old age pensions by the Fine Gael/Labour government in 2012. It will be a difficult choice for Fianna Fail at their convention but logic, and it’s logic which wins seats, would dictate that they run three candidates – Browne, Enniscorthy – McDonald, Wexford and Sheehan, New Ross. That divide with those three strong candidates should see two Fianna Failers back in the Dáil after the next election, whenever that comes. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? DAVIDSTOWN-COURTNACUDDY… Fr Jim Nolan is the well known Parish Priest of DavidstownCourtnacuddy and he has a most unusual hobby – that of “writing” icons. Icons have been a feature of Eastern Christianity for centuries. Each Icon tells a story from Scripture so they are said to be “written” rather than “painted”. The Icon is a visual expression of Scripture that expresses a deeper theological and spititual truth. According to Fr Jim: “As you paint, the artist becomes a cocreator with the Spirit in bringing an image to life.” n

Can’t Cope Won’t Cope
keeping an eye on tv Well folks I have been watching a few programmes this weather and even though the sun is shining and has his hat on so to speak I have been watching some programmes of late… One is now in its second season and is called can’t cope won’t cope which tells the story of two girls from Mallow in Cork who live in Dublin. One is called Danielle who is an art student in Canada played by Nika McGuigan and her bff Aisling played by Seana Kerslake who works in an office and has got a new job because Danielle has told her to get her shit together. Now this is so funny, what these girls get up to is unreal. They drink heavily, go to Copperface Jacks, pick up strange men and sleep with them. In last week’s episode Aisling thought she was getting the Manager’s job. She misread everything. Her new boss fancied her and brought her to London. She won him a new contract but then she doesn’t get promoted but tells him to stuff his relationship up his you know what, then is greeted by her old boss who is now her manager, Amy Huberman. She get reunited with her bestie
Danielle. Next week is the last episode of this series which is written by Stefanie Preissner. Another TV programme I watched was grange Hill. This TV series was Brittain’s longestrunning kids’ programme back in the day and is 40 years old. It ran from 1978 to 2008 and was written by Phil Redmond. It was set in a comprehensive school in London called Grange Hill. It starred several well known actors and actresses who went on to star in Eastenders. Sean Maguire, Todd Carty and Letitia Dean to name but a few. This programme had its fair share of teenage pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse , domestic violence, bullying, school fights and of course the two main English past-times of football and cricket. Tucker Jenkins was the class clown played by Todd Carty who later was Mark Fowler in Eastenders. If you don’t know this series or have never seen it, then I suggest you look up Youtube which has this series from the start to the end. Next month I’ll be reviewing two more TV programmes. – Joseph Doyle

Moyne Rangers make history
James Browne TD (left) enjoyed Moyne Rangers’ success in the U-13 Cup Final.
saturday 19th may will go down in moyne Rangers history as the day both moyne Rangers teams in cup final action brought home the cups! First up were the U13's against a very good Forth Celtic side. It was a tightly contested game with few clear chances and remained scoreless at full time and after extra time. The game went to a penalty shootout where a heroic performance from the Moyne Rangers keeper, Liam Kenny, in saving 3 penalties and converting the winning penalty helped Moyne Rangers to a 3-1 win and lifted the Cup. Congratulations go to the players, Manager Willie Browne and his management team on going one better this year and bringing home the Cup. The U13 team are still in contention in Division One with two games remaining and can go on to achieve the Double
this year and we wish them the very best of luck in their final two games. N e x t u p w e re M o y n e Rangers Youths in the Stanno Youths Cup Final where they faced an excellent North End side who were unbeaten in the League all season and had just recently won the League title. In an excellent game of football Moyne Rangers won out on a 3-2 scoreline having conceded the first goal. The performance of the players was superb and they recorded a famous victory for the club by beating the red hot favourites. Congrats go to all the players, Manager Rory O'Connor and his management team on an excellent performance and for bringing home the Youths Cup. A brilliant day for the Enniscorthy Club and hopefully many more to follow in the future. n

Newly elected committee of Enniscorthy Drama Group.
as a founding member of enniscorthy drama group (edg) i was elated with the great turnout at treacy’s Hotel on 15th may for the annual general meeting proving that drama is indeed alive and well and thriving in enniscorthy. Formed in 2013 under Colum Coomey, myself and current Chairman Liam Doyle, it is uplifting to see the level of interest in the town for local theatre.
In his Chairman’s Address Liam Doyle said that it has been an excellent year for EDG participating on both the OneAct and the Three-Act Circuits and acquitting themselves well in both coming away with several awards if not the ultimate prize. ‘Not alone did we acquit ourselves well but we have secured friends and return invitations to Festivals around the country next year.’ He congratulated Fintan Kelly, AnneMarie Whelan and
Brendan Robinson and Director Tom Reddy and all the committee for their Trojan efforts throughout the year. Liam said that he was delighted to see such a good turnout and hoped that many of those in attendance would put themselves forward for the new committee. EDG Treasurer Tom Boland gave a very detailed and professional report of accounts, outlining income and expenditure on individual plays and profit balance in bank.
Following the election of a committee of 15, discussion ensued on plans going forward including choice of plays, pub theatre and fundraising events, with the mood upbeat and confident that Enniscorthy Drama is now firmly established on both the local and national theatre scene and it is onward and upward into the future. A most gratifying and pleasing experience for those of us who were there at the beginning – maria nolan

support of Government. “We are delighted to report that in 2019 the Castle will be open to the public for the first time in thirty years”, said Tom Doherty of Teagasc. “We will be offering an exciting visitor experience with access to three floors of the castle, access to the original servants’ tunnel
and a new visitor centre with a café and shop. “We are also working on a new road layout which is safer for cars and buses as well as improved paths in the gardens and grounds,” he continued. We’ll carry more details on this major development in next month’s Slaney News. n
Main Street - Heart of Wexford by Nicky Rossiter A new publication from Wexford author and historian, Nicky Rossiter. With this thirteenth book Nicky takes his readers on an interesting and informative journey along Wexford's Main Street. Many Wexfordians will be surprised to learn that the first mention of a Main Street proved difficult for Rossiter to actually pinpoint but on looking through various business directories he discovered an entry dated 1764 which mentioned the Flesh Market; Cornmarket; Back Street; Keizars Lane. Pigot's Directory gave this thoroughfare a mention in 1820 with The Dublin Almanac of 1844 giving the first description of the street. In his chapter on Places and Events we read about the Bag Factory; Local Banks; Beechville Dairy and The Cape of Good Hope - where is that you may ask but all will be revealed on page twenty-three. Many of the towns businessmen were often called to serve as jury members in the courthouse. Christmas on Main Street over fifty years ago is also recorded. Bakeries such as Frank O'Connor's and Godkin's supplied the freshly baked bread while Hadden's, Healy & Collins were emporiums of fashion supplying the latest in ladies and gents clothing. Kenny's Hall was said to be occupied by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. It was purchased by Colonel Kenny in 1730. We all know this property today as Penny's. Many business firms and shops are noted as the reader moves along Main Street and the messenger boys who delivered the purchases to the various clients in the vicinity of the town. Occupations, Parades, Processions and Prohibitions are also covered through the 128 pages of this fascinating book. The final chapter has a great title - What Was Where which names the shops and their former and present occupants all along Wexford's Golden Mile from North to South Main Street. A must for all lovers of local history and a look back in time to the hustle, bustle and banter of an Irish provincial town. It is both insightful and comprehensive, and is a wonderful history concentrating on the principal street of Wexford illustrated by little-known photographs and interesting advertisements. Published by The History Press Ireland and retails at €16.99 and is available at all good book shops. n
Artists Martina Furlong and Marja van Kampen will exhibit their colourful paintings and limited edition prints in their Pop-Up Gallery in Siopa Bróg (opposite The Athenaeum), No. 3 Castle Street, Enniscorthy, during the Strawberry Festival. The exhibition will run from Friday, June 1st to Sunday, June 3rd. Open each day from 11am to 5pm. All are welcome. Dutch artist Marja van kampen is a full time painter and printmaker. In her paintings Marja van Kampen explores childhood themes combined with elements of landscape. There is a use of vibrant colours and patterns in her paintings, suggested by other cultures. She enlarges elements, distorts proportions and discards perspective, and introduces a playful imagery to give her work a light-hearted quality. Her work is in many public collections including the Arts Council of Ireland, Office of Public Works and four of her paintings are in Aras an Uachtaráin, residence of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. She is a recipient of many Arts Council awards. www.marjavankampen-artist.blogspot.ie www.irish-art.com/marja/ Wexford born Martina Furlong paints colourful, textured landscapes and abstract scenes in oils and acrylics. Her work is inspired by the things she encounters daily; from the Irish countryside to books, songs, people and buildings. Martina mixes reality with memories and imagination and paints her own interpretation of it by building up layer upon layer of paint and using various tools as well as brushes and pallet knives to work back into the surface. Martina’s work is in private collections worldwide. In recent years she has exhibited in the USA, Italy, England and throughout Ireland. www.martinafurlong.com n
MEMOiR wRiTiNG wORkShOPS FOR kilMORE Following the success of his recent series of workshops in the same venue, Wexford-based author Jackie Hayden will host a second three-part series of Write For Your Life talks at the Stella Maris Centre in Kilmore Quay. The workshops will take place on three consecutive Tuesdays, starting on June 12th at 7.30 pm. As Hayden points out, “The recent series was totally sold out, proving that an increasing number of people are seeing the value of writing down their life experiences, and not necessarily for publication. Some want to do it for the pleasure of writing, while others see a therapeutic value in putting their memories and feelings into words. Unfortunately, many find it difficult to get started. The Write For Your Life workshops are intended to help them overcome those initial difficulties.” Hayden will demystify the writing process using his considerable experience as a writer, editor and journalist. He has written over 10 books, mostly of a biographical nature, including the number one bestseller My Boy. He has also edited autobiographies for other writers, and written thousands of articles, reviews, and news items. He has published interviews with a variety of subjects, from Bob Geldof, The Corrs, Sinead O’Connor, Eleanor McEvoy, Christy Moore, Gerry Ryan, Liam Clancy, Pierce Turner and Mary Black to Michael D Higgins, Johnny Giles, David Norris and Gerry Adams. Write For Your Life places are limited to 15 participants, and the cost is €20 for a participant’s first workshop and €10 for each of the remaining two. All participants will be entitled to a later one-to-one free consultation with Hayden. Booking details are available on www.stellamariscentre.ie or by e-mail to jachay@eircom.net n
