Team Corstens Stayers' Fund

Standing on the Flemington podium on that famous first Tuesday in November, clutching that mighty gold Cup. Posing for photos with your Melbourne Cup winner. The dream of every owner! A dream that the Leon Corstens stable is hoping to make come true – which is why Troy Corstens has been a very busy man, inspecting hundreds of yearlings at the world famous Karaka Sales. A proven source for high class stayers, Karaka is the ideal place for Corstens to start his search for his stable's first Melbourne Cup winner and he has been excited about his finds so far. "I am really happy with the purchases," he enthused – highlighting five outstanding types bought especially for a new Stayers Fund. "The quality of yearling over here has been outstanding, it's testament to the whole New Zealand industry". Cup type horses are the aim and with that in mind Corstens has spent many hours pouring over the catalogue and looking for just the right types. The search has proven fruitful so far with colts by two proven stallions and two up-and-comers the syndicate's first buys. An O'Reilly half brother to the Waikato Gold Cup-Gr.2 winning Singing Star has been one astute purchase, as has been a Pins colt out of a winning half sister to the last start runaway UK Doncaster Racing Post Trophy-Gr.1 winner Crowded House. The other two colts also boast promising pedigrees, the first being a Savabeel half brother to the Listed winning stayer Plaudits and the other a High Chaparral half brother to the Corstens trained The Wolverine. A filly was added to the group at the Select session, catching Corstens' eye a Pins from the Hunza family that has produced the big race winners Courtza, Our Pompeii and O'Reilly. The Corstens stable have fared extremely well with staying types over the years, well represented by the likes of Helenus (VRC Derby), Laebeel (just beaten in a Caulfield Cup), Cherontessa (SA Oaks), Gossips (St Leger) and St Shannon (St Leger).
