IT WAS QUITE AN INTERESTING ENTERTAINMENT SCENE IN OCTOBER. THERE WERE PLENTY OF HEROES WEEKEND AND HALLOWEEN EVENTS, AND MANY MORE THAT DIDN’T NEED A HOLIDAY TO BE CELEBRATED. AND AS ALWAYS, SLEEK IS HERE TO BRING YOU THE BEST OF THEM ALL.

BLEU - OCTOBER 12-15

As expected, the Heroes Weekend staged BLEU continued straight down its usual path of delivering an exceptional party atmosphere in an exclusive environment at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort. Kes, the event’s main entertainment attraction, brought the house down and rocked the crowd with a good performance. A good time, good liquor and a bevy of attractive patrons was what BLEU was all about.

FRENCHMEN FOREPLAY - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14

Another Heroes Weekend event high on the exclusive scale, Frenchmen, was a big winner. Patrons were kept busy all night with the ‘vibes, vibes and more vibes’ theme that seemed to be the order of the night. The liquor and food choices were also a definite plus.

APPLETON ESTATE INTERNATIONAL BARTENDER CHALLENGE - FRIDAY, OCTOBER

Nine top bartenders from around the world gathered at The Wyndham hotel in New Kingston for the Appleton Estate International Bartender Challenge. They mixed like there was no tomorrow, and when the dust settled, Bristol’s Richard Tring emerged

DIGICEL FOUNDATION 5K NIGHT RUN/WALK SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20

Downtown, Kingston was transformed when Digicel Foundation hosted a 5K Night Run/Walk in the area. Scores of participants turned up for what has been called the Caribbean’s first ever night event of its kind. Young and old alike were spotted gearing to take on the task at hand, and indeed they did. The charity event for the Special Needs community was by no means short of support.

SLEEK Business

Muffin Top Cafe Located in the parking lot of the Knutsford Express depot in New Kingston (18 Dominica Drive) is the Muffin Top Café. Since opening its doors last August, the café has been providing very easy breakfast options for the many workers in New Kingston and surrounding areas. Check out Muffin Top Café as we discuss SLEEK Business with co-owner Sadiki Thames (other co-owner Susanna Osullivan). A name is important, as it says it all. So, why the name Muffin Top? As with any business finding that ideal name can be one of the greatest challenges. Our initial concept involved topping off a meal with a complimentary muffin. The idea was then deliberated amongst partners and close friends at which point the name MUFFINTOP derived. What sparked the desire to start the Muffin Top Café? The initial desire was based on identifying a niche’ market and tapping into it. Muffin Top started from the kitchen of our home, providing sandwiches, fruits and muffins as a breakfast option to business professionals seeking a tasty meal

at an affordable price. Upon the love and appreciation of our product over the months our brand then developed. We then made a collaborative decision as a team to expand our services to attract a wider consumer base from a convenient location. What’s the greatest challenge you’ve faced since you’ve opened doors? I think most business owners would agree that one of their greatest challenges is maintaining that balance between affordability and profitability in today’s market given the current economic strains from price increases imposed by the government worldwide. The Muffin Top mission statement speaks to affordable products and ultimately giving our customers value for money which we have to live up to despite economic conditions. Tell SLEEK readers why they should choose and what can be expected upon a visit to Muffin Top Café. Muffin Top Café is an ‘experience’, not just a product or a brand. A customer will find that each of our menu items is tailored around their cravings. Our café is focused on affordability and consistency in quality. We are very innovative and diverse in our executions using a lot of our local produce in our products. We try to incorporate products our customers love.

DINNER R

estaurant Week (November 9-17) is coming up, and if you’ve never participated in years before, it’s about time you get out there and enjoy the experience. Whether it’s the whole family, friends, or your significant other that you’ll venture out with, it doesn’t matter. But if it’s with a new/potential significant there are some simple guidelines that should be followed to optimize the dining experience for both parties. Don’t worry, SLEEK is always here to help. SHE IS ALWAYS FIRST This is so from the instant you pick her up. She’s the first to get in the car, walk into the restaurant, sit down at the table, and to place an order. This is important to understand because as men, we’re used to fighting for the last beer. Show her that she is your priority. TRY TO PACE YOURSELF Men eat at a faster pace than women. If they’re on an easy stroll, we’re going at a high paced stroll. Slow down! There’s no deadline! Besides, if all you’re doing is stuffing your mouth with food, how are you going to be able to carry on a conversation? LISTEN An easy way to slow down while eating is by listening to what your date is saying. Of course you don’t want to do too much and make her feel like she’s talking

too much, but try to pay more attention to her and less to the other things in the room. LOOK THE PART The importance of this does not need emphasis. Remember that a first impression lasts, so if you don’t impress, what does that equal? PAYMENT… Unless otherwise agreed, you’re paying, all of it. DRINK LIMIT We all enjoy having drinks, but we’re also to be mindful of our limit. Don’t overdo it for whatever the reason may be. You can ensure that your date keeps on track too.

Christopher MARTIN In 2005, the Rising Stars competition gave birth to Christopher Martin. Since then, the entertainer has matured tremendously and has come into his own as a household name and crowd pleaser. He’s one of the SLEEKest younger entertainers on the scene. And guess what? He’s our SLEEK cover feature! 1) You’ve come a long way. In what ways would you say you have matured musically over the years? I would definitely say my voice has grown. I’ve learned more ways to use different tones and my writing has also improved. I think I’ve improved all around with my voice, my writing and my performances. 2) How has the journey of building brand Christopher Martin been? It’s been great, if I was to complain I’d be ungrateful. I can see great changes in the support I receive so the brand is definitely growing. 3) What are some of the most memorable moments in your career thus far? My trips to Africa are very memorable. So is my Sumfest performance. With every opportunity I get to showcase my talent to a different crowd it’s wonderful and memorable. 4) What do you do for fun/in your spare time? I think I’m a footballer you know lol. I play a lot of football and dominoes. I love acting a fool and giving jokes. I also like going country and hanging out by the river. 5) What type of women do you generally go for? A girl has to be herself. I like a girl who is kind and can par with me and my friends and feel comfortable. And of course there has to be a physical attraction. And Cheeny have to check for her. 6) Do you believe in love at first sight? Why/Why not? CAMILLE’S OUTFIT PROVIDED BY

Yeah I believe you can see a girl for the first time and get that feeling. That’s not to say that it’ll work, you could get to know her more and don’t like certain things and it doesn’t work but I do think those feelings can be evoked at first sight.

7) One thing that most people would be surprised to know about you is....? I don’t think a lot of people know that I got called for the National Under 15 Football Team Trials. I told you I’m a general lol. They might also be surprised to know I’m really afraid of heights and frogs. 8) What really annoys you? Liars. People who fabricate stories for no reason really annoy me. And girls who talk too much. 9) Every man has one. What is your dream car? An Aston Martin. Chris Martin in an Aston Martin, has a nice ring to it. 11) What foreign country have you received the most love in? How was that experience? Africa and Japan. As I get off the plane I can feel the love. Lots of reporters and cameras, you can see that they are really into me and my music. When I do radio interviews and fans call in you can hear the passion in their voices. It’s very humbling when you’re in a non-English speaking country and see them singing along with all your songs. 12) Which one of your songs do you believe is the SLEEKest? Why? White Sheets is very SLEEK. I think it’s a nice play on words and I felt very proud when I was finished writing it.

In the previous article we agreed that the ‘hot’ girl you spotted across the dance floor at the club is very likely single, free and disengaged. So, the challenge is, how do you approach her? If I had a surefire formula to get her, I’d likely be rich from selling the secret. What I do know is, there are some basic rules that are far more likely to work than not. First, you’re going to need to introduce yourself. If you’re out of high school, it means you’ve passed the stage where you ask your friend to go talk to her on your behalf. For a grown person, that’s not a good look. At a nightclub or party, nobody wants to have a long conversation when you should be dancing. Trying to shout over loud music is likely to frustrate her. So make up your mind that you’re going to get in and get out within a few minutes. But what do you say that will get her attention? Remember, it’s important to be yourself. I suggest you find some striking feature you find very Akil Strachan ReachMe@AkilStrachan.com www.Randomli.com

attractive about her and let her know. Now, before you get carried away and think I’m telling you to tell her she has a nice ‘rack’, let me explain. Find something that appeals to you, something unique, and most important appropriate, and compliment her on that. “You have a really gorgeous smile” works. It’ll be hard for her to shoot you down if your compliment is genuine and decent. After the compliment, her guard will be down for just a bit, this is your opportunity to introduce yourself, ask for her name, and if she’s with anyone. Remember keep the conversation short unless you feel she’s really into it. And for heaven’s sake do not ask her to dance. If later on in the night you guys happen to run into each other (by accident or on purpose), a quick dance might be ok. For this initial conversation, just end with letting her know you’d love to talk to her outside the club, and can you have her number? If she does give you her number, sleep well knowing that you’ve gotten over the first hurdle. Next issue, what to do now that you’ve gotten her number!

Lady's

A A

Approach

llowing the men to believe that they, indeed, are in charge. That is the art of being a woman.” Lady Elizabeth, The Other Boleyn Girl. This coming from the time of King Henry VIII when a woman’s decisions were made by her father and husband. Much has changed since those times. In “The Approach” featured in this issue the writer talks about how men “should” approach women. He talks about the way to speak to a lady without it seeming like a crude come one. He has a point gentlemen. But we women have our own set of tools to attract men and sometimes we don’t even have to say a word. More power to the lady who has the guts to make the first move but some ladies are more subtle. Ok gentlemen start paying attention! When you’re out and you’re scanning the room to see if any ladies strike your fancy, remember to look at more than just their bodies. Pay attention to their eyes. When a lady wants to get your attention she’ll speak with her eyes. It’ll be more than a quick glance but less than an obnoxious stare. When a woman scans the room and sees a guy she’s interested in she’ll take it slow. She’ll observe him and try to gage if he’s

with someone. Once she’s comfortable that he’s alone that’s when she waits for him to see her. And trust me he will. She’ll make sure that when he looks in her direction their eyes will, as they say “mek four”. It could be coincidence so she’ll make sure it happens more than once. At this point the guy is wondering if this is all in his head. Then comes the cute two step to show she’s capable of having a good time and when she’s ready for him to come say hi she’ll flash that “colgate smile” The “colgate smile” is more than a smirk but not as much as a grin. It’s her most inviting smile. When she gives that smile gentlemen that’s your cue. Go over and say hello. But remember to be a gentleman and keep it simple. A smile isn’t an invitation to go home with her so don’t get too excited.

WTF?

CAUGHT ON CAMERA!

When you’re caught red handed, the guilt seems never ending. But guilt is everlasting when you’re caught on camera. People remember it a lot longer and once it hits the internet they can watch it pretty much whenever they want. Some people manage to use it to their advantage, but in general, that’s not the case.

A recent and funny example, Mr Vegas’ case, is just...classic - cheating caught on camera. Who knows? Maybe the cameras were originally installed for home protection purposes or even as a deterrent to cheating, but whatever the reason, they certainly served a purpose. Of course, this isn’t one that will just blow over and be forgotten in a few weeks. Just watch and see! How about this? A jailed bank robber, who had carefully planned his entry, exit and getaway methods, gets caught by the security camera’s at the bank. Missing that minor detail has now landed him behind bars. Here’s an even better example - we certainly had several laughs while watching the recording of the Cleveland bus driver’s uppercut on the Internet. Let’s face it YouTube would be far less exciting if people decided to be smarter and not let their embarrassing moments end up on camera. If not for being caught on camera, it’s possible that many of today’s stars wouldn’t be stars at all. Case in point...Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton and the list goes on. An example that hits close to home is the recent ‘jmcngirlsexposed’ saga, many females/males were humiliated by their recorded sexual encounters going public. Bet you the regret isn’t that it got out but that they let it be caught on camera in the first place. Being caught on camera can be your worst nightmare. So save your reputation and try not to let your most intimate moments end up in the wrong hands. It’s highly unlikely to land you in a good spot light.

PROTECT YOURSELF Contributed by - Denver Holt

very day we go about our daily activities and we try to ensure we stay safe and protect ourselves from many of life’s dangers but one aspect I find many of us are not protecting ourselves from is CYBER THREATS. These threats come in varying forms and the variety increases every day. Most of us would be familiar with the recent episode where the privacy of several young women and men was ‘exposed’ where the mastermind hoped to extort victims. It is our personal duty to ensure that we protect ourselves from attacks of this nature by simply integrating the basic checks and tools in our daily routine just as we look left and right before crossing the road.

THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK Don’t download emails, attachments, files from persons or websites you don’t know and be wary of attachments from persons you do know. These emails tend to have very appealing Subject Lines to grab your attention like ‘Pics from my vacation’ or ‘Nude Pics of Rihanna’ but don’t be tricked as these clicks lead to viruses. SECURE YOUR PASSWORD Your password is yours and yours only. DON’T share your password EVER. Follow basic protocols when creating a password and just think that, the easier it is for you to remember may be the easier it is for someone to crack. Don’t repeat your passwords across the different services nor should you record it anywhere.

date by turning on Automatic Updates. If you don’t have these installed get to installing after you have finished reading this magazine, there are a couple free ones online. DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE If it’s too good to be true then it probably is. ‘Working from home, earn USD 500 a week commission’ OR ‘Scan your PC here for Free’ are some of the more common lines scammers and hackers use to take advantage of unsuspecting persons. Pass on them, they are NOT true!

WATCH WHERE YOU CONNECT Be mindful of public networks you use to connect to the internet. Who doesn’t love free WIFI; but ensure your information on your device is secured and not openly shared for everyone else to have access to. Secure your information! PROTECT YOUR DEVICES – Keep your anti-virus, antispyware and firewall up-toThese are just a few tips I use stay protected from any possible threats. Keep yourself protected too!

Brazil

?

I’M SURE WE WOULD ALL LOVE FOR THAT TO BE A REALITY. THE BOYZ WOULD HAVE PLAYED HARD FOR IT, AND BESIDES, THE BLACK, GREEN AND GOLD KIT JUST LOOKS VISUALLY APPROPRIATE TO BE IN THE COUNTRY THAT BOASTS GREEN, YELLOW AND BLUE. Our team managed to keep the hopes of continuing to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil alive with a 4-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda at The Office, advancing to the final round of the CONCACAF World Qualifying Series. Between February to November of 2013, they will be competing to hold a place in Brazil. Qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, would mark Jamaica’s second time to do so, the first being in France 1998. And like the recently concluded Olympic Games, the World Cup fever would be ever present and highly contagious. It’s just a matter of getting the right players on the field to play a sensible game of football. And win of course. There are of course, many other factors, but belief in the ability of the Jamaica Football Federation’s technical staff is needed. At least for the remainder of the Rio 2016 campaign that has, given our usual track record, been ‘so far, so good’. But looking at the bigger picture, if the Reggae Boyz get to Rio 2014, it should result in increased investment and development in the island’s football program for future similar endeavours. We got to our 50th anniversary of independence this year, and we went to London and took the Olympics home, so why not? Rio 2014 all the way!

What was the last soca party you attended? Whatever the answer may be, I’m sure you remember the high energy, fast paced beats that had you jumping and gyrating in the fete. We’re in Jamaica, the home of dancehall and reggae, but mind you, soca is like a warmly welcomed house guest in the island. At the rate that it’s moving currently, who knows, maybe in a few years, it’ll shoot past dancehall and reggae to become the sound of the Caribbean. Popular soca entertainer Machel Montano seems to hope for this. Some time ago, he took part in a panel discussion at the Caribbean Investment Forum 2012 in Trinidad speaking on the topic of Trinidad and Tobago’s creative industry. On his vision for soca to reach to that level, Montano was quoted by The Trinidad Guardian as saying, “I think we need to come together as a unit. I am pushing for soca to be the sound of the Caribbean.” Of course, there are many other issues that have to be ironed out before this is possible, but there is hope. These issues he said included the need to embrace and capitalise on technology and the construction of a proper entertainment industry. Good vision, but for now, we’ll just be enjoying the soca beat that makes us want to move our feet.

WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS EXPERIENCING A WARDROBE MALFUNCTION IS EMBARRASSING. JUST ASK ANYONE WHO’S HAD ONE. A WARDROBE MALFUNCTION IS NOT SELECTING THE WRONG CLOTHES TO WEAR, IT’S ACCIDENTALLY EXPOSING BODY PARTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE EXPOSED. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU AVOID THE MOST COMMON WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS.

OVEREXPOSURE

It’s the most embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. You’ve probably seen celebrities experience it. You put on that top skilfully adjusting it to provide an appropriate amount of cleavage cover, but hours later you look down at your chest and realise that something’s dreadfully wrong. But it’s now too late. And who knows? Others have probably realised it already. The simple solution for this is known as fashion tape. It’s a double-sided tape that will secure the fabric to your body. And ladies before you leave the house test your tape. Put it in the desired location and move around a bit, jump a couple times. Let’s go for that pre-emptive strike and stop the overexposure before it happens.

DEODORANT STAINS Some deodorants tend to leave noticeable white stains on clothes after they are applied. As such, some wonderful mind developed a Garment Deodorant Remover. When used, the white spots disappear just like that. But if you can’t find any, rub the stain with nylon pantyhose, works wonders! Our female readers can agree that it’s VISIBLE BRA not always easy to cover up that bra in the sleekest tops. However, there are some measures to take to help fix the circumstance. Some genius out there developed the backless strapless bra. It’s a bra that consists of the cups with an adhesive on them that sticks on to chest. But ladies who are more blessed in the chest area and need a little more support a bra with a clear strap around the back works just as well.

DOES THIS MAKE ME LOOK

FAT?

Does this make me look fat? You’ve been asked or have asked this question at some point. If your aim is to look thinner and taller, not everything will help you to achieve that. Run through these styles to see if they work for you. They’re known to make you look the exact opposite of what you’re seeking bigger and shorter.

Females

SKIN-TIGHT DRESS When a dress is tight, horizontal wrinkles appear in areas such as the bust, hips and thighs. If lumps are clearly visible, the dress does not belong in your wardrobe. Other features such as being too short or too revealing or an unforgiving fabric can also add to the fattening effect. FULL SKIRT A full skirt on a short woman is a pound adder because of the apparent widening effect it brings. The worst types include full circle skirts, gathered skirts, and pleated skirts. ANKLE-WRAP SHOES Shoes with ankle wraps cut off the leg line, visually shortening the figure. When women, especially short women, wear anklewrap shoes, they also look wider. Ankle-wrap shoes also have a heavy look.

males

GET SOME GOOD JEANS If your jeans are baggy, stiff, and they rest above the waist, you’re guilty. The waist of your ‘proper fitting jeans’ should fall right around your hipbone. YOU CALL THAT A SUIT? Are the sleeves too long? Are you ‘walking on your pants foot’? Then that means your suit doesn’t fit and you’re probably looking rather fat and/or tacky. The sleeves should fall almost at your wrists, and you can choose closer fitting shirts to avoid adding unneeded visual bulk. BULKY SWEATERS Bulky sweaters easily add pounds visually, even if the extra pounds aren’t really there. 28

GRADUATING CLASS OF 2012 E Y.O.G.O. YOU ONLY GRADUATE ONC

A

t 25 years old, Drake just graduated from high school? Wow! It seems when he rapped “money over everything”, he was pretty serious. The rapper was enrolled at Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, in Toronto but dropped with just one credit left to go. For what? To help earn money for his family. Okay, it’s an excusable excuse. He nabbed an acting job, on the TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation and it seems he just never decided to go back…until recently. So it turns out that at least one hip hop star graduated from high school. YOLO!

SHELLY’S GOLD Double Olympian Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, also recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Adolescent Development at the University of the Technology. On the front line of Olympic and national duty, Fraser-Pryce has done the country very well and SLEEK’s sure that all Jamaicans are proud of her for yet another accomplishment.

UTECH HONOURS When other university students were preparing for graduations, a rather unfortunate event unfolded at The University of Technology and went viral hours after. Many have weighed in on the hot topic and whatever opinion you hold, you’re free to stick to it. We all know the story, at least what the public has been told, and we all have our version of what should’ve happened. But, to each his own.

TOMMY LEE’S GRADUATION Without a doubt, Tommy Lee will participate in his own official graduation ceremony at Sting in December. Yep, it’s that time of year again folks! The time of squabble and murmur leading up to the annual Sting stage show hosted by Supreme Promotions. Like every other year, it’s the same thing. This time around, Bounty Killer and Ninja Man have accused the promoter of disrespect, and of course, money issues are in the mix. Bounty is supposedly upset that the promoters are planning a face off between himself, the ‘idol’, and 32 the young Tommy Lee.
