Welcome

T

hough we live on an eternally warm-weather island, summer as a season, much less as a concept, is officially over. We’re all either back in school or back in office, reminiscing on the lazy days we spent reacquainting with our favourite resort-dotted coastlines. Now, that the days are shorter, rainier and there’s a slight chill in the night air, SLEEK returns our focus to the urban culture and landscape that is integral to life in Jamrock. In this issue, we keep time with select moves from the world of dancehall, we hit the roof at dusk - the perfect setting to indulge in a wardrobe of streetwear - and we get a little self-involved with virtual reality.

Within Becks’ City Limits A card-carrying member of The Rock’s savvy youth culture, our ‘Keeping It Street’ model Rebecca Mahfood, shares with SLEEK her take on metropolitan life and how she navigates her little piece of that urban pie!

Which Kingston neighbourhood do you live in? I live in Mona.

What lessons have your parents passed unto you about being street-smart?

Always be aware of my surroundings, be independent and be able to quickly come up with practical solutions to any problems I may be facing.

Where’s your favorite spot to grab food after a party?

That would have to be pita grill. Their wraps are amazing!!

Where’s the best place to watch the sunset in the Corporate Area?

I’d say the Mona dam, i go there to exercise every now and then and the hands the down best part is the view. The sunset is killer!!

Name your favourite city landmark?

Devon house because I loveeeeee ice cream!

What does your personal style say about where you live?

My personal style says that I live in a veryyyyy hot climate. I tend to lean towards more comfy and breezy clothes.

A trip to the Second City must include a stop where?

Scotchies — their jerk pork is so good!

Which current local or regional song has to the power to turn your night around? That’s a tough question for me because I love music so it’s hard to pick one song but it’s probably World Cup by Popcaan.

What’s your favorite slang of the moment and what does it mean?

Wahhhh!!?!?! Got it from popcaan. I use it when I ask someone a question and they give me a surprising answer. For example: “Wahhhhhh I doe believe you juss seh that!”

Hellshire or Lime Cay?

Tough choice because I’m a big foodie and Hellshire has the best fish however I like soaking up the sun at Lime Cay. I find the water and sand is nicer. I’m gonna say Hellshire because as much as I love soaking up the sun I hate the boat ride to Lime Cay because I get sea sick.

What’s your favorite thing about being a city dweller?

My favorite thing would probably the easy access to different restaurants and link up spots to hang out with friends. However I’d rather live in the country(preferably Whitehouse Westmorland)

Buss The

Dance They are the guardians of the space between the sound system ‘selectors’, the asphalt and gravel bed underfoot, the beating towers of speaker boxes, and the bar counters answering the calls for Magnum, Guinness, and ‘Whites’. They are the wily performers we mimic as they move in unison to the vocals and riddims of our favourite dancehall music videos on YouTube. Curious to see what’s next to perfect, three dancer/choregraphers step out for the SLEEK cam...

The Digital Third Eye

Nothing is more intimate than the relationships we have with our smartphones. These days even the most rudimentary of activities seem almost impossible to execute without some involvement from an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Recently that experience has taken on a retro sci-fi twist with the democratization and modification of the virtual reality headset, which simulates immersion and escapism through the use of personalized technology.

18 | SLEEK

With devices such as the Google Daydream, Samsung VR and Oculus Rift being the dominant names on the market, the virtual reality experience holds a wide range of possibilities for users. There is gaming, for with the devices are most popular, but then they also attract travelers who want to preview tourist destinations before paying down on a flight and accommodations. Opportunities even exist in film for the viewer to become voyeur or passer-by as the technology inserts you within the action of the narrative. Take travel to higher heights to explore the cosmos like an astronaut as you become acquainted with celestial world. For the safety monitor within, take emergency drills to shore up your response reflexes to natural or man-made disasters. There are also exposure therapy exercises to counter real-world phobias or lingering PTSD. Then for history or futurism buffs there is the lure of ‘time travel’ where walkable tours bring users up-close and personal with bygone eras or realms not yet discovered. It seems that these headsets will continue make into many Cyber Friday carts as consumers become more familiar with life on the flip-side especially as manufacturers are in a constant frame of mind to expand usage. SLEEK hears that adult simulation and stimulation is an area which has already found its virtual reality niche!

Let’s get on the

HUAWEI EXPERIENCE By Kelly Ann Campbell

In this world of high tech and smart gadgetry, the options for a mobile experience that will blow your mind are endless. But how does one really settle on which device to purchase? Is this decision driven solely by brand name? Shouldn’t we want quality, reliability, superior capabilities and affordability all wrapped up in one? On a recent shopping trip, the store attendant suggested I go with the Huawei G8. I was blown away by all the great features of the phone model. I had come to realize that all this time, I was overpaying for the luxury of having a smartphone with other brands. It only cost $40,000 for my G8, which comes with a storage space of 32GB! As someone who uses my phone primarily for social media, messaging and, yes of course, selfies, the G8 is great for watching Youtube or scrolling through my Instagram feed as it offers a spacious 5.5-inch FullHD display with a 2.5D curved edges. The camera setup boasts a 13MP main unit, complete with autofocus and a dual tone LED flash. For taking selfies the G8, has a 5MP front-facer. Battery life is also important to me; my previous smartphone kept dying. The G8 does a pretty good job of power management with a total endurance rating of about 70 hours. And, one of the phone’s biggest tricks is on the back – the clever, incredibly accurate fingerprint sensor. I’m a big fan of sensors as they make unlocking my device simple and ensures you have an extra layer of security, without a bothersome pin code. The final verdict? If a good entry-level 4 LTE smartphone is what you need, then the Huawei G8 is the phone for you!

Cricket, lovely cricket was the order of the day, when the Jamaica Tallawahs enjoyed a winning streak last summer on their home base of Sabina Park against the likes of the Trinbago Knight Riders and the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the 2016 Hero Caribbean Premier League T20 Tournament. Amid the runs and the overs, SLEEK paid close attention to the spectators, who came out to support captain Chris Gayle & Co, smack dab in the vibes of the field-side Appleton Estate & Digicel Party Stand.

For the final days of July into Emancipation Day, all roads heeded the clarion-call of Kadooment Day with xhosa with crucial pit stops being made at the innumerable fetes, which included Bliss - The Summer Edition, Limerz Cruise, and Roast Cruise, along the annual Crop Over timeline in Barbados. The collective whine-up and lyming continued to pay tribute to calyspo, rum, and sugarcane traditions of the harvest festival - which gained new, consistent life in 1974 - while indulging in a contemporary soundscape amid the cavalier and fun attitudes of ‘dirty habits’ and ‘tekkin’ off something’.

The 55th Annual Montego Bay International Marlin Tournament featured a week of nautical competition and activities in The Second City. Anglers locally and from around the region vied for recognition and glory as they sailed in pursuit of the ‘biggest bite’. A major pull to this year’s event was the guest appearance of marine wildlife artist and conservationist Guy Harvey — graphic tees and beach towels bearing his artwork were at 1990s staple — who conducted an angling technique workshop, and received his own custom blend of Appleton Estate Jamaican Rum from the heritage distiller. All that fishing, lyming, and camaraderie then came to a close for another year on the shores of Doctor’s Cave Beach as the tournament wrapped at the Tight Lines Raft Up and Beach Party.
