THE BOUNCING CONTINUED AT
JAMAICA CARNIVAL STORY BY: RHONDA BELL
2013
F
or those who experienced it, Carnival 2013 in sweet T&T was truly an exciting affair of fun and festivity in the land of Soca music. After a 40 day period of abstinence, rest and reflection (AKA Lent) the Carnival Caravan continued in beautiful ‘Jamrock’ as Jamaica kicked off the 2013 post-Easter partying. Kingston’s top Soca promoters brought forward a week of events to appease the feting public.
relaxing reunion for those who had just flown in for the action and for others it was an extension of the excitement experienced at Beach J’ouvert. Up next Soca-philes headed to the suburban, community of Jacks Hill for the annual Frenchmen ‘Blocko’. Faithful feters were literally shuttled into this all-round well organized event. The Blocko boasted attendees decked off in all forms of impressive apparel and footwear, however, this did not hold them back from partying into the wee hours of the AM to the sounds of both local and foreign DJs.
For many the ‘I love Soca’ cooler fete commenced the Carnival week. The uptown bring your own drinks party was held at the Hope Gardens and was a fun,

Fantastic Friday in Kingston brought plenty action and a whole heap of debate as Carnival Junkies were torn about which of 2 major events to attend. One
event ‘Bacchanal J’ouvert’ hosted by Bacchanal Jamaica featured a performance by Soca Queen Destra Garcia and all the paint and dutty mas which partiers have come to know and love. The other ‘Pandemonium’ which was hosted by LIME featured water, powder and both International Soca Monarchs Machel Montano and Super Blue. Ultimately both were successful and well attended.
Soca fans were again torn on Carnival Saturday as to whether to attend the allinclusive Frenchmen ‘Bazodee’ or to get wet and wild at the famed ‘Water Party’. Regardless of which feting option was chosen, patrons of both events partied hard and got enough sleep to hit the road the following morning for the Bacchanal Jamaica Road March. One of the biggest and most impactful Road Marches in recent times, the 2013 edition saw involvement from many locals and out-of-towners.
JA Carnival 2013 not only saw participation from Trinidadian entertainers e.g. Machel, Shurwayne Winchester, JW and Hypa Hoppa but also from Jamaican personalities such as Shaggy, Sean-Paul, Usain Bolt and Yendi Phillips who showed their regional counterparts that when it comes to Carnival the ‘yardies’ know how to party. Straight from the bruk out to breakfast, the J’ouvert jumpers (some still completely covered in paint and others freshly bathed) ended up at the Sunrise Breakfast Party. Considered by many the best fete of the Carnival weekend the breakfast party offered an authentic Caribbean breakfast, premium drinks, music by top selectors and surprise performances.

STYLE TRICKS TO MAKE YOU
Look Slimmer Ladies, we know you love your curves, but sometimes want to look a little more streamlined. As such, we’re sharing these styling tricks with you. These will see you looking slimmer in an instant!

6 2 1. Tunic tops
A form flattering tunic is a style must-have for any wardrobe. These clever tops easily work wonders at slimming your shape. Any lumps or bumps won’t be detectable by sight and you’ll feel and look subtle and extra confident.
2. Slimming fabrics
Choosing fabrics that are lightweight and fluid are perfect for helping you achieve a more streamlined shape. On the contrary, fabrics that are bulky, extra textured or inflexible can add bulk where you least want it. Avoid heavy fabrics and opt for things like cotton and linen. 18 SLEEK | April/May 2013
5 3. Wide leg trousers
The wide-cut trouser is the perfect blend of trickery as they can skim over larger hips and add balance to your shape, leaving you looking slimmer. Go for high-waisted versions to really add shape where you want it. If you prefer to make a style statement, aim for loud prints.
4. Pleated skirts
If you don’t have a pleated skirt in your wardrobe, now’s a good time to get one. Larger thighs are instantly flattered by the flare of a pleated skirt. The length helps make the legs look a few centimetres
longer too. Don’t forget that longer legs mean a slimmer figure.
5. High heels
Want to look slimmer, taller, and sexier, all at once? Then go get yourself a killer pair of heels. They lengthen the legs, lift the bum and generally give your form a longer, leaner shape.
6. All wrapped up
These life-saving frocks are your new bestie when it comes to dressing to look slimmer. Usually wrap dresses gather on the side which instantly creates the illusion of a flatter tummy. They are often cut with a V-neck too, which can ‘lengthen’ your torso.
GYM
BUDDY
The gym has become somewhat of the new spot for meeting and greeting new people. One of the biggest malefemale concerns on the side of the male is: How do I pick up a girl from a gym environment? After all, it can be very intimidating since there are probably 10 other guys looking at the same girl you want.
Here are things to look for and assess before you meet your potential mate: • Does she have a ring on her finger? • No ring? How about a tan line on her ring finger? • Do you have eye contact with her occasionally? • What kind of personality does she exhibit? Is she shy, talkative, flirtatious or confident? • Estimate what time she arrives at and leaves the gym. • Observe how she interacts with other men at the gym. • See if she’s a beginner, average or an intermediate worker outer. • Pick up on her patterns: what she drinks, how she trains, who she talks to. • Get a ‘vibe’ from her. A vibe is an invisible message to you that she likes you. Now, you’ll only get maybe a few chances to talk to her as the gym’s not a big place for talking. There are key moments when you are actually able to converse with someone. Make it count! • Approach her to assist when she is struggling to adjust a weight • When she is done with the squat or bench press, act like you are using it next and help take off her plates. That will spark conversation. • Stretch in the group exercise room when she is in there performing lunges, core work or stretching. • Watch out in case she drops anything on the ground so you can retrieve it for her. • Accidently start training on her machine when she is getting water. • Say something to her if you notice her absence. • Initiate conversation during rest times and ask her about a local. • Be real and tell her she’s beautiful and that you’d like to take her out sometime. 23 SLEEK | April/May 2013

facebook HOME
Facebook junkies, there’s something new on the tech scene that you’ll probably enjoy. It’s called Facebook Home, an interesting, and odd, experiment from the social networking giant. It’s not a phone or an operating system, and it’s not a rebuilt version of Google’s Android OS. What Facebook Home is, in the technical sense, is a collection of Facebook apps that act as one on your smartphone. The social network we all have come to love is placed centerstage, and introduces a pretty useful chatting system. On the down side, Facebook Home forces you to relearn how to navigate your phone. The transition from the system to the other mobile apps isn’t that smooth. It dominates your Android start screen, so essentially it commands you to place Facebook first and all other apps second. Thankfully, it’s completely optional and somewhat customizable.
Interface
When you wake your phone, the first thing you see is the ’Cover Feed’, an apparently never-ending stream of friends’ photos and updates from your news feed. Chat messages, icons, notifications, and other text overlays this full-screen photo backdrop. The photos have an auto-scroll feature, or you can simply flick to the next. However, the Home settings allow for the lock screen to be kept engaged, so that the feed appears only after you’ve unlocked your phone. Seeing images instead of your usual apps and widgets is the hardest part of getting used to the system, but your apps are still nearby. You simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access the app launcher which overlays the screen.
Facebook Home will definitely appeal to hardcore Facebook users, because of the ease of access to Facebook that it offers. For normal Facebook users, it’s not worth having; it’s more of an unwanted distraction on your smart phone. 28 SLEEK | April/May 2013
