Good day, SLEEK Family! Welcome to our very special Carnival Edition of SLEEK Magazine. A very eventful few weeks have passed since you last saw us in print, but those of you who keep up-to-date with us via our Facebook page (that should be just about everyone), you’ll know just how busy SLEEK has been recently. On the leadup to, and during Jamaica Carnival, we always ensure to bring you the very best coverage of each event leading up to the pinnacle of Road March. So far we’ve experienced some awesome nights at Mas Camp, with Bacchanal Fridays being THE party to attend on a Friday, and as usual, our pictures represent the very best of the event. On top of that, promotions team SunNation brought us Sunset Cocoa J’Ouvert - the first party of its kind in Jamaica - where patrons were handed buckets full of ooey-gooey cocoa instead of paint. Let us tell you, it was MESSY in more ways than one! We also wanted to bring you the exclusive first look at the Smirnoff costume in action with our cover star, Pulse Caribbean model Nastashia Mitchell. She’ll be telling us why she’s looking forward to carnival, whilst looking completely stunning in the process. Well, why don’t you find out for yourselves? It’s all inside this extra colourful, extra chocolatey, carnival edition of SLEEK Magazine! SLEEK MAGAZINE | 6

ome call it Lent, but I think it’s more like rehab. Not drug rehab, psychiatric rehab, or any of those other fancy rehabs, we’re talking Jesus rehab.
Trying to give up something for 40 days and night…if that’s not rehab, then we don’t know what is. Half the fun of Lent (truth be told there’s not much fun to begin with) is sitting down to figure out what you can give up in your life to make you a better person. The list of possibilities is lengthy, but the good old favourites include:
cursing, junk food, drinking, drugs, sex, violating every single deadly sin, ignoring most of the commandments and being an all-around Kanye West. So as it turns out, this self-reflection which is supposed to help you figure out what you can change in your life also helps you realise what an awful person you are. Your life on trial. Take Vybz Kartel for example, he gave up dancehall, what ya givin’ up?

21-YEAR-OLD NASTASHIA FLAUNTS HER STUFF WONDERFULLY ON OUR COVER. BUT JUST WHO IS THIS SLEEK BEAUTY? Nastashia is a humble, hardworking, determined young individual. “I’m a go-getter for sure, and I try my best to put myself out there as much as possible. I always remind myself where I’m coming from and who I am as I never throw stones behind me.”
Where are you headed career wise?
I’m modelling of course, and I’m also doing pharmaceuticals at a private institution, but to be honest I’m in love with fashion and entertainment. What three words describe you best?
I’m a family person, I’m goofy, and I’m hard working. Who’s your inspiration in life?
The first person is my brother. I have an older brother who is nine years older than I am. Life is not easy for him. I’ve watched him over the years accomplish a whole lot doing everything himself. So honestly he is like my inspiration. He’s the reason why I’m doing what I’m doing now because he’s like my number one fan. He’s always encouraging me and no matter how bad the situation is he never judges me.
The next person would be - I know it might sound cheesy - but it’s Tyra Banks. I look up to her because she’s been doing what I’m doing for many years and she didn’t come from a rich background. She built herself. She’s like an icon in my eyes right now. So I definitely look up to Tyra Banks. This is our carnival edition, what are your thoughts on Jamaica carnival?
I’m going to be totally honest; it’s my second year in it. I was like a house rat before. Mi just a do road! I started last year. I went to road march but didn’t actually march. I stood at the side and I watched and observed but I’m kinda getting to like it. I don’t really like the music that they had many years ago, I’m more of the current person. Have you ever been to carnival outside Jamaica?
No, next year I would love to travel to Trinidad. I’m being more adventurous in my early youth. What soca songs are you jamming to? Wi Ready Fi Di Road and Carnival Tabanca. Those two, if I’m in the gym or anywhere I’m rocking.

New Horizons with
The
Bachelor
Chef
S SHEA STEWART
hea ‘Bachelor Chef’ Stewart, not only known for his delicious, mouthwatering food, but also for being the innovator of Bachelor Chef Cookout, has a new restaurant that’s making waves amongst the foodies of Kingston. Shea’s at Countryside, located at 7 Courtney Walsh Drive, is a self-proclaimed ‘Oasis in the City’, and with several SLEEK team members having already experienced it, we can safely say that it’s worthy of that title. We caught up with Shea recently and asked him a little about this new business venture...
Shea, how did this come about? Was it an overnight thing or a long, hardthought process?
It happened overnight, really. It just kinda fell into my lap. I’d known the general manager for years, and it just made sense.
What’s the vibe like at Shea’s?
It’s a laid-back vibe. Lots of live music, and the food speaks for itself.
Why Countryside Club? What’s so great about that particular location?
The ambience of the place sets the tone for creating an atmosphere of relaxation. You can’t get a better location than this, it’s a true ‘oasis in the city’.
What kinda food would you say ‘Shea’s’ serves? Give us three words. Eclectic Jamaican fusion.
And finally, what next for the ‘Bachelor Chef’?
Firstly a relaunch of my Bachelor Chef series, which some of you may be familiar with already, and if you’re not then make sure to check it out on YouTube on my channel ‘BachelorChefElite’! And after that I’ll be launching my website. Exciting times ahead... SLEEK MAGAZINE | 32

he ‘lost’ Malaysian airplane: Wow, well...this is a strange one. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 vanished from radars on March 8th, and is still missing as we write. The Boeing 777 containing 239 passengers has been the main talking point in the media since its disappearance. Various search methods have been put into play, but still no luck finding it. In a world where you can pinpoint your cellphone with various apps, you’d think today’s technology would be able to locate a plane! Back on home ground, dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel was convicted of murdering Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams on March 14th after three years of incarceration and deliberation. Police discovered messages on Kartel’s phone describing the murder of ‘Lizard’. Police in riot gear guarded barricaded streets outside Downtown Kingston’s Supreme Court, ten members of an 11-person jury found Kartel and the three others guilty of the murder. Sentencing is still pending as we go to print... The ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys’ & Girls’ Champs finals got underway on the 28th and finished in style on the 29th with Calabar winning their third consecutive boys’ championship, despite the disqualification of up-andcoming star Michael O’Hara. On the girls’ side, Edwin Allen dethroned Holmwood Tech to take the top girls’ spot. Victory was clearly on both schools’ minds from the start, but it was ever so sweet as you can see! (Get pics of both schools celebrating, either from O’Neil or Athelston).

There aren’t many things Jamaicans are afraid of, but the few things we are afraid of, we tend to be very afraid of! Let’s see if unnu agree with these...
Duppy
Everyone has elders who have at least one duppy story. Family events, especially funerals will probably include a duppy story, and Aunt Dottie would scare you with her version of events from 1976 when dead cousin Everton kept opening the fridge “cah him was always craven bad!”. Which brings us to...
Duppy Bat
No, it’s not an actual bat, nor is it a ‘ghost bat’, it’s a big brown moth, but for some reason we love to call anything that flies “bat”. These ‘Duppy Bats’ are said to be spirits of family members or loved ones who passed some time ago and want to visit us. They have a real tendency to hide behind curtains and “flap flap flap!” into your face all of a sudden. Ugh!
Lizards
The average Jamaican is likely to be more afraid of a lizard than a gunman. In fact, it’s probably fair to say a bag of lizards would be more likely to frighten a victim of a holdup than a gun would. True story.
Obeah
In translation; ‘Jamaican black magic’. An ‘obeah man’ can be paid to perform ‘magic’ if, for example, you want your child to get good grades at school, but it’s said that obeah can work in very negative ways as well.
