My best carnival experience was last year when I got the opportunity to jump as a part of and along with the fabulous Miss Universe 2012 ladies. M.U.J.’s 12 ladies plus carnival…pure vibes, excitement and fun! Who are you jumping with this year and why? I’m not jumping this year because I am actually covering the event for NiteLyfe TV...but if I were…I would definitely jump with Smirnoff! Love their costume! What’s your favourite part of carnival? We know you’ve been busy getting ready for di road! Preparation will ensure that you cover all angles; nonetheless, we’re here to remind you! So come Sunday, April 7th we all should be ready for di road! Have your band costume ready and fitting properly! If not, wear light, comfortable clothing. This is the time of year when almost anything goes, so don’t hesitate to be different. There isn’t a better time to say much less is much more! Carry a little sling bag that you can walk with. It can come in handy when you’re out on the road all day. It should contain the following essentials: sunglasses, sun screen, vex money, mobile phone with credit

(smartphone not advisable), makeup/ glitter, tissues/wet wipes, painkiller, anything else important to you and your safety. Don’t get dehydrated. Take water with you or purchase bottled water as you go. Alcohol dehydrates, so if you’re drinking make sure to chase properly and have some water in between drinks. Wear comfortable shoes. You already know that you’re up against the road so you should be

prepared for it. You’re sure to be on your feet all day! Walk with a waving contraption. Rags, handkerchiefs and flags are perfect. You just need to make sure you have something in hand when the time comes to “wave yuh flag!” or “wave yuh rag!” Four, five, six friends…any amount you desire. They’ll make the experience much better and can remind you the day after of all the things you did that you have no recollection of.

Remember, it’s only one day to have what can be the best time of your life! So make it count on di road! 10 SLEEK | March 2013

Step 1

Size up yuh target. Yuh cyan try tief a wine off a shortie if yuh 10 feet tall.

Step 2

Set up surveillance to check if she out wid her man or if him parring wid him girl. Yuh doan waan try tief a wine an when yuh close on the approach yuh see a man or woman pop up out the ground.

20 SLEEK | March 2013

Step 3

Next yuh check the profile. + I’Z A POSER! Stan up in the people dem party not doing a damn thing but pose! Is the worst thing to try tief a wine off a female poser, she will shame yuh! But the male posers cyan defend themselves. If a sexy SLEEKie try tief a wine off him all him can do is go along wid it. + NAH FEEL NUH VIBES! The ‘nah feel nuh vibes’ people yuh can know by how dem react to the different songs. Watch how dem just get weh to di wine-up song, then when a fun-time song play dem stiff. Best thing if yuh waan tief a wine from one a dem just gwaan circle until the wine-up segment start, then yuh run in wid di ambush. + TOO COOL FOR THIS Suh yuh too cool for this? Nuhbody nuh waan tief nuh wine off yuh anyways! Yuh goodly caan wine either. + HOW YUH FEELING? SLEEK! They know they’re SLEEK and they’re feeling SLEEK in the party suh they can do as they want. Yuh shouldn’t have a problem tiefing a wine! Unless yuh try tief it blatantly unSLEEK of course, and unless dem doan know you or anybody in yuh crew from Adams. After yuh check all that you should now be able to tief the wine without any trouble. Wine hard, gentle, fast, slow, or however yuh want!

To die for knee-high boots, batty riders on 100, 200 and 300 pound ‘divas’, pink, blue, red, purple…colours, colours and more colours. Carnival fashion can be quite a whirlwind! Of course, most people desire ‘all eyes on me’ for the season, so the outfits that would bring discomfort if worn outside the season are dusted and pulled from the ‘black section’ of the closet. It’s the most carefree time of year on the event calendar! It’s Carnival time! However, some take it to the extreme. SLEEK did some field research and here are some Carnival fashion tips. Pay attention divas! THE TWO OVERs An wi not talking nuh cricket! Over-tight and over-weight isn’t a good combo. Besides looking silly, squeezing into several sizes below yours is harmful to health. Why wear smedium, if the guys call you ‘thickas’? DARKERS TONIGHT Why’d you want to wear shades to a carnival event? You can be pardoned outside the season, but not now. Watch out, careful not to hit your toe. HEY MISS MINI Dressing for the occasion still applies. Know what type of event, the setting and the atmosphere that you’ll probably encounter and follow suit. Some say don’t wear white on J’ouvert morning!

24 SLEEK | March 2013

BLING BLING Don’t wear lots of expensive jewellery. Look around, you see anybody else wearing bling? MAKE ME PRETTY Leave your heavy, overdone make-up and extreme glitter for the road. Wearing too much to an outdoor day or a night event is not recommended. WIGS AND WEAVES Jump up! Guh dung! Palance! Do everything the deejay says. But just ensure your hair remains on your head. Fix it properly! O.P.P. Wearing Other People Property is a nogo! Find your own man! Plenty out there!

SOCA VOCAB 101 We're in Jamaica, but the majority of soca music we listen to is from Trinidad. As such, you may not be so in tune with the language/slangs. Here you’ll find some Trini slang words and expressions that you might find in the songs. Enjoy! BACK BACK - We all do this! It’s a suggestive dance performed with the male’s front rubbing against the female’s rear, and vice versa. BAMSEE - the rear end (of a female of course). BAM-SE LAMBE – an attractive bamsee. CHIPPING - it refers to the time during which the disc jock plays slow soca songs and the revellers walk to the beat, cooling down from the fast paced music that would have been playing earlier. HORN - to cheat on a boyfriend or girlfriend. Horner man/woman - the man/ woman your significant other is horning you with. RAM-CRAM - packed to capacity. WUK/WUK UP - the females love doing it and the males love when they do. It’s a dance where the hips and the waist are rotated in a clockwise fashion. It must be done to the beat of the music and is a faster form of a wine.

Bet You Didn’t Know

Soca is derived from the words soul and calypso. J’Ouvert originated from the French ‘jour ouvert’ or ‘day open’. It consisted mainly of bands of revellers covered in chocolate, mud, oil and paint, portraying darker elements of human life. A Mas Camp is actually a meeting point for carnival bands, where people come to register and make payments on their costumes. Costumes are also made here ready for distribution to band members. To ‘play mas’ means participating in the road march where patrons are adorned in beautiful costumes and dance, sing and drink, on the carnival route. 28 SLEEK | March 2013
