IN ONE YEAR It’s been a year since we first went to the printers. It’s been a year since we held the first edition of the SLEEK Magazine. It’s been a year since you read your very first SLEEK Magazine. If you’ve been with us from the start, you’d have known that we were originally a weekly foldout magazine and we came to evolve into this current monthly
style and our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages have grown to become a hit among our readers. The year has been good to us. We’ve grown from strength to strength and we only see better things on the horizon. Despite the long journey, the hours spent compiling each edition has definitely been worth it.

PATRICE WILSON-MCHUGH When was Bars to Go founded and what was the dream behind it? Bars To Go was established in 2005 out of a dream of not only mastering my craft, but using it to elevate the level of bartending in Jamaica and to give persons that ‘feel good’ feeling after consuming something I have created. You are a Master Mixologist, tell us what that means. A Master Mixologist is a person who studies and specialises in the art of flavour creation. They develop a skill of finesse, using it to infuse various flavour signatures in a very technical way to create cocktails that subtly extract emotions from the person who consumes it. Simply, a Master Mixologist is very similar to a great painter. I always say, “spirits are my brush, bartending is my canvas and mixology the resulting art.” When did you know you wanted to be a mixologist? This came to me more like a shock or a knock over the head as when attending school I had no idea that I would be who I am today. It all happened after I began having cocktails (mixed drinks). I was fascinated with how varying drinks gave me a different feeling and it sparked the question, why? This generated a hunger or in this case a thirst for more information and the art essentially trapped me like quick sand. You are a very busy lady, what keeps you going? I’m not going to lie, sometimes its really tough to keep going but my ultimate aim to raise the standard of bartending and mixology in Jamaica keeps me plugging away. Additionally, I have seen how I have impacted and empowered young and undereducated persons, re-energising in them the passion to succeed in life; that gives me great joy. Also, I started the project of the Jamaica Bartending Guild and it is impossible for me to stop until it reaches its full potential. 30 SLEEK | Anniversary Issue
Shoot done on location at Puls8
Tell us one of your biggest career achievements. Its almost impossible to pick out one achievement as the biggest as I am equally humbled by them all. They have also been the catalyst to each other. I became the first Certified Master Mixologist in Jamaica. Eventually I was deemed to be among the World’s Greatest Mixologists and asked to submit a drink recipe to the world reknowned Don Julio’s Luxury Drop book, to which I contributed the “Reposado Lightning”, paying homage to Usain Bolt-the world’s fastest man. Recently I was recognised in the PSOJ Top Fifty under 50 individuals in Jamaica and now the expansion of Bars To Go Training Academy that will be touching international waters in September 2013. Where do you see yourself and your business in the next 5 years? My life purpose is to shape lives, to enlighten, to influence; whether hands-on or non-direct, to impact! All my tasks before have laid the pavement. In the next 5 years with God’s will, I would like to see a further expansion of Bars To Go Training Academy with its own campus. Making Bars To Go Group the largest full-service hospitality company in the Caribbean.
Tell us one thing about yourself that people might find surprising. Most people think I am hard but I am really a softy when it comes to my 9 year-old daughter. She is one of the motivating factors in my life as she pushes me to be my best at all times. She says I am her role model so I have to live up to her expectations, which are VERY high to say the least.

When did you know you wanted to become a designer? It has been a passion of mine ever since I was a teenager. I’ve always wanted to be a designer. It’s just that I didn’t think it was possible until my younger sister Mitzie started to encourage it. She did Miss Jamaica Universe in 2011 and that pretty much kick started everything lol. I found myself working day and nights to complete orders, I even ended up with the Miss Jamaica Universe Contract that year. What does your line entail? LeeAnn Desingz comprises of trendy and stylish resort wear (swimwear & coverups), business and cocktail dresses.
When did you know you wanted to become a designer? I actually didn’t know for a long time. I’ve always been interested in so many things! I started designing as a hobby, just for myself - for some reason being in a fabric store is the most exhilarating thing to me. In college friends began to ask about my designs and wanting to buy them so a little business was born. I was hooked after that and I decided that this was something I really wanted to go after even though I actually studied Film, English and Entertainment. What does your line entail? I love bright colours and I love bold cuts so you’ll always see that from me whether it’s a swimsuit or any other kind of garment. What are some of your accomplishments as a designer? Showing in CFW has been a big accomplishment for me, especially this past one where I put my entire collection together in just 4 days because I wasn’t originally planning to show. I’ve also had my swimwear featured in several pageants. 32 SLEEK | Anniversary Issue
What are some of your accomplishments as a designer? Working with Miss Jamaica Universe Team in 2011, CFW 2012-2013, Kingston Bridal Week, having my pieces being highlighted by the Blackburns (TV show) and now a part of Miss Jamaica 2013. Fantastic things are ahead for LeeAnn Designz.

Dancehall artiste Assassin is the latest Jamaican act to secure a collaboration with an international star. He’s featured in the single ‘I’m In It’ on Kanye West’s new album ‘Yeezus’. According to a press release sent to SLEEK, while in Jamaica, Kanye’s production team approached Assassin for a few verses. “Sometime in January they got back to me, let me know that Kanye had listened and liked the verses and that we'd be in touch to do some more work. The album leaked a couple days ago and that's when everyone found out that I was on it,” Assassin is quoted as saying. The release also stated that ‘I’m In It’ is already a favourite judging by social media and other online feedback.

“This is a Kanye West production and we all know he loves to push the envelope. The whole album is insane, but 'I'm In It' is definitely one of the more crazy tracks on there,” Assassin remarked, before adding that he looks forward to working with Kanye and other local and international artistes in the future. This summer, Assassin promises that there will be “a whole heap to listen out for”. Fans in Jamaica and North America can look forward to seeing him at some of the hottest upcoming events. He also has several singles such as ‘Shell’ , ‘Tell Unnuh’, ‘Material Girl’ and ‘How Yuh Mean’ currently promoting.

1. WHO IS KABAKA PYRAMID? AND WHY THAT NAME? Kabaka Pyramid is a revolutionary lyricist that spreads consciousness through a fusion of roots reggae and hip-hop music. As a Rastaman it is important to have an African name, and I came across Kabaka, which in Buganda (Uganda) means ‘King’, and it resonated greatly with my spirit. The Pyramid signifies my intention to make my music long lasting and a source for spiritual inspiration for all who know how to listen. 2. YOU’RE A PART OF A NEW AGE REGGAE MOVEMENT. WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN TO YOU? It’s all about cycles - time is a cycle. We saw it happen in the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, ‘00s, and now in the ‘10s where a group of artistes rise up and take their place in the story of reggae music. It is great to know I’m associated with this movement and that there is so much talent around me to keep me motivated. Hopefully we will remain unified for years to come and do great things for the music and the people. 3. FROM WHERE DO YOU GET THE INSPIRATION TO PEN THE PROFOUND LYRICS FOUND IN YOUR SONGS? Life, nature, rastafari livity, the works of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, the 3636SLEEK SLEEK||Anniversary AnniversaryIssue Issue
books I read. The struggles humanity face, the imbalance of modern day society, and of course a good riddim/ production hehe....everything inspire I&I. 4. WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE TO DATE? The one that comes to mind would have to be a performance I did in Toronto during the 2011 Manifesto Festival. It was a small show that our Jamaican delegation put on to raise funds for Manifesto Jamaica’s festival later that year. From start to finish it was pure shellinz! It was an intimate setting so I could see how much everyone was fulljoying the set...it was a great night for me. Unfortunately there is no remaining footage, to my knowledge, from that night.
5. WHAT’S MOST SLEEK ABOUT KABAKA? The metaphysical bling, the chains & pins I’m always wearing. 6. WHAT ARE YOUR SUMMER 2013 PLANS? Our label Bebble Rock will be releasing my 2nd EP ‘Lead The Way’ with a video for ‘Worldwide Love’ and a free track for the ladies ‘Get You’ on the way as well. We will be touring the US on the west coast, including performances at Reggae on the River and Northwest Reggae Festival. Then we’re off to do our second European tour from August to mid-September, where I’ll touch some major festivals and clubs all over Europe.
Dem neva seen nutten like we, to see the great Pyramid fall mi say that is not very likely!!!

We’re almost sure you’ve experienced it before. It might even be happening now. Smell that? Summer love is in the air! What is it about the summer that seems to create the ideal conditions for summer love to blossom? Maybe it’s the escape from the many rules that school and parents establish as there’s no school and less annoyance
from your parents. Or it could be the change of the people that you would see daily that occurs in the summer. This means you get to talk to interesting new people you wouldn’t normally get to interact with. Another reason (well this one is sort of scientifically proven) is that more sunlight means more melatonin and serotonin (chemicals in your brain that make you happy). So then it’s natural that people are happier and have more fun during the summer. Additionally, the warm weather means more opportunities to chance upon a potential love at places such as the beach. Summer is shorthand for the easy life. You’re more likely to love then. They’re tons of places where summer love can be found. Going out with friends will be different than any other time of year. Gather your circle and hit the beach, mall, club or other fun summer spots. It’s easier to approach new people when you have moral support. If you have a summer job that’s a great space to meet new people and you can always try the great, big book of everything, Facebook. Get to know your not-soclose friends in a different perspective and you might be surprised by what you find.
It's already in the air. Now it's up to you to decide if your summer love will last.

Out: 21st June 2013 The movie is based on a novel and stars Brad Pitt as an United Nations employee racing against time and fate, travelling around the world trying to stop the spread of a deadly Zombie disease. It’s said to be similar to ‘Children of Men’.
Out: 26th July 2013 Let’s hope this movie can fix the underwhelming memory of the previous Wolvernie Origins. The film sees Hugh Jackman as Wolverine heading to Japan where he falls for the daughter of a Japanese crime lord and goes up against Silver Samurai and Viper.
Out: 28th June 2013 As a secret service agent, Channing Tatum must rescue the President from a paramilitary group that has taken over the White House. Yep, it’s another ‘Die Hard’ or ‘Air Force One’ type of movie, and it’s pretty similar to ‘Olympus Has Fallen’.
Out: 3rd July 2013 From the writers, director, producer and even the star of the ‘Pirates of The Caribbean’ series comes this latest attempt to revamp the old-time radio/ TV show, The Lone Ranger. Johnny Depp plays Tonto, an Indian warrior who finds a wounded Texas Ranger and teams up with him to fight injustice. Expect a similar vibe to the ‘pirates’ movies.

Since its introduction, Instagram has developed a whopping
130 million users on its photo sharing app. Vine, a video-sharing app which was launched by Twitter in January managed to pass 13 million users this month. Instagram has since introduced a video sharing feature to their already popular app. Now the battle is on to see which will be crowned the favourite. While Vine only allows for six-second videos, Instagram allows for 15 seconds. Those nine seconds might not seem like much, but it is (compared to six it gives much more time to put together a better video). Both feature the ability to switch between the front and rear cameras while filming.
When it comes to playback, Vine is much faster as videos play the moment you scroll over them while with Instagram you’ll have that short delay after you press the play
Remember to follow us on Instagram for the latest @besleekja

button. Also, unlike the GIF-like videos of Vine, Instagram videos don’t loop (play over and over when you scroll on them). Vine’s recording is very simple, resulting in an Instagram edge as the bigger app has brought its popular filter features over to
video and offers the choice of 13 filters to create various tones on each creation. When it comes to editing, Instagram has an advantage as users can edit their clips before they are compiled into one video, while Vine users can only delete whole videos not individual clips.
For sharing, Instagram wins again allowing one to share on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Flickr while Vine is most easily linked to Twitter and Facebook. Vine has been doing fairly okay for the time that they entered the arena. If they continually assess and improve their software then who’s to tell that they won’t do well against the competition. Currently, Instagram offers more features to help create a SLEEK video snapshot.
