HANS VAN DE
BOVENKAMP Dutch-born American Sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp has been an integral figure in the international art scene for over 50 years. Recognized for his monumental sculpture, which is often installed in open-air public locations, Bovenkamp takes much of his inspiration from myth, symbol, and nature. Viewing art as a “dialogue between matter and spirit,” Bovenkamp uses his artwork to invoke feelings of awareness and revelation amongst observers. Although he is known for his large scale sculpture, Bovenkamp’s innovative approach to creation has resulted in a wide array of artworks, ranging from minature to monumental sculpture, to gates, to fountains, in a variety of mediums. Bovenkamp began his secondary education at Amsterdamn’s School of Architecture in 1958, eventually continuing on to the University of Michigan, where he graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science and Design. After graduation, Bovenkamp moved to New York City and associated himself with the avant-guard Tenth Street scene, an abstract expressionist movement. Over the course of his lengthy career, Bovenkamp has been the recipient of many distinguished awards, including the Emily Lowe Sculpture Award and the Sculpture Award as awarded by Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York. His works can be found in the permanent collections of the City University of New York, Stony Brook University, Texas A&M, University of Missouri, Jing’an Park in Shanghai, Mt. Sinai Hospital in Miami, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Lowe Art Museum, Boca Raton Museum of Art, and the Miami University Art Museum. Bovenkamp’s sculptures are represented in the corporate collections of Neiman Marcus, the Georgetown Plaza Building, the Hyatt Regency, Louis Meisel, and the Manhattan House. An internationally renowned artist, Bovenkamp has particiapted in over 50 solo exhibitions, in addition to numerous group exhibitions, including the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston and the Oakland Museum. “I find myself working towards an art which includes a spiritual dimension. I have become increasingly aware of art as a dialogue between matter and spirit. In recent works, I have emphasized myth, symbol and dream to evoke an atmosphere in which the sculpture and its environment speak to the subconscious to make the observer aware of the dreamlike nature of life, of which we all are part. ~Hans Van de Bovenkamp
