he big one, the 2023 Repco Bathurst 1000, is here with the new Gen3 Supercar set to tackle the endurance classic at the Mount Panorama Circuit for the first time. It’s 60 years since the first running of the Armstrong 500 at Mount Panorama, with the occasion being marked by a parade of legendary cars and drivers over the course of the event. Chevrolet will return to the event for the first time since 1984, while it also marks the first time that Holden will not take part in the event. All eyes will be on our the Gen3 cars will adapt to the challenges of the Mount Panorama Circuit, with Chevrolet having had the edge over Ford over the course of the 2023 season. There will be six practice session in addition to qualifying, the top 10 Shootout and a warm-up session before the 161-lap/1000-kilometre race. Unlike in recent Bathurst 1000s, there will be no specified number of compulsory pitstops. The Bathurst 1000 will be run on soft compound tyres for the first time ever as part of a revamp of the Supercars tyre allocation in 2023, with Gen3 less demanding on corner loads than the previous generation Supercar. Twenty-eight cars are entered in the event - 15 Chevrolet Camaros and 13 Ford Mustangs – with three wildcard entries from Blanchard Racing Team, Dick Johnson Racing and Triple Eight Race Engineering. Last season’s winners Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander have been split with Tander’s off-season move to Grove Racing, with Kevin Estre, Kai Allen and Aaron Love making their Bathurst debuts. Triple Eight Race Engineering and Erebus Motorsport were once again the pacesetters at Sandown, with victory going to the former courtesy of Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup. Erebus Motorsport leads both the drivers’ and teams’ championships entering Bathurst, with Brodie Kostecki topping the standings ahead of Triple Eight Race Engineering duo Shane van Gisbergen and Broc Feeney with Will Brown and Andre Heimgartner rounding out the top five. Co-drivers joining the field include the likes of multiple Bathurst winners Tander, Whincup, and Craig Lowndes, veterans Fabian Coulthard, Lee Holdsworth and Jonathon Webb and youngsters Zak Best, Jayden Ojeda and Tyler Everingham. The Repco Supercars Championship will be supported by the Dunlop Super2 and Super3 Series, Porsche Carrera Cup, Toyota 86 Series, Sports Sedans and V8 SuperUtes at Bathurst.

With Garth Tander moving to Grove Racing, the 2022 Bathurst-winning combination is split with Shane van Gisbergen joined by Richie Stanaway. Broc Feeney once again teams with team principal Jamie Whincup, who will juggle his managerial duties with a return to the driver’s seat. Triple Eight will run a wildcard entry in the endurance events with Craig Lowndes and Zane Goddard in the Supercheap Auto-backed entry. Martin Short and Andrew Edwards are the engineers for Feeney and van Gisbergen respectively, while Wes McDougall will take up the engineering role on the Supercheap Auto wildcard entry.

FORD MUSTANG #11 ANTON DE PASQUALE/ TONY D’ALBERTO #17 WILL DAVISON/ ALEX DAVISON #98 KAI ALLEN/ SIMONA DE SILVESTRO There were big changes for Dick Johnson Racing in the off-season as well as the switch to the new Mustang with Brett Ralph and his family joining the ownership structure and David Noble appointed the team’s CEO at the end of 2022. While Ford’s homologation team featured some new faces off track, there was continuity on the racing side with Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison behind the wheel, engineered yet again by Ludo Lacroix and Richard Harris respectively, and Shell continuing as the naming-rights sponsor of both entries. It’s also an unchanged endurance line-up with Tony D’Alberto reuniting with De Pasquale, while brothers Will and Alex Davison will team up on the other side of the garage. There will also be a wildcard entry with Simona De Silvestro returning to Supercars to partner rookie Kai Allen.

Tickford has been the best-performing Ford team, but the championship challenge never materialised given the performance of the Mustang relative to the Camaro. Waters is joined for the endurance events once again by James Moffat, while Zak Best moves across the garage to partner Courtney. Garry Jacobson returns to the team to drive alongside Randle, while Tyler Everingham is a new recruit to team with Fraser. The endurance events represent a chance to get one over the Camaros with the team a regular on the podium in long-distance events.

#2 NICK PERCAT/ FABIAN COULTHARD #25 CHAZ MOSTERT/ LEE HOLDSWORTH

It was a new dawn for Walkinshaw Andretti United in 2023. After a long association with Holden, dating back to its days as the factorybacked Holden Racing Team, Walkinshaw Andretti United switched to Ford, with Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat engineered by Adam De Borre and Adam Austin respectively. Mostert reunites with his 2021 Bathurstwinning co-driver Lee Holdsworth, after the latter stepped back from full-time driving at the end of 2022. With Holdsworth returning to the team, Fabian Coulthard moves across the garage to partner Percat. Following an up and down season, the team will be hoping that, like the other Ford teams, the endurance events represent a change in fortunes for the Blue Oval entrants.

#19 MATTHEW PAYNE/ KEVIN ESTRE #26 DAVID REYNOLDS/ GARTH TANDER

Grove Racing entered into a partnership with Kelly Racing in 2021, morphing into Grove Racing in 2022. After building up the team with the addition of David Cauchi as team principal and Grant McPherson as a technical director, Penrite remained as the naming-rights sponsor of both entries with full-time rookie Matthew Payne replacing the retiring Lee Holdsworth alongside David Reynolds. Alistair McVean continued his long association with Reynolds as engineer, while Jack Bell helps steer Payne through his rookie campaign. Five-time Bathurst winner Garth Tander joined the team in the off-season, teaming with fellow Bathurst winner Reynolds for the endurance events. On the other side of the garage, French sportscar driver Kevin Estre makes his Bathurst debut alongside Payne. After flashes of speed over the course of the season, the combination of experience and youth will be one to watch.

Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki entered their third full seasons at Erebus Motorsport, with their new Chevrolet Camaros now in the colours of Coca-Cola with the soft-drink giant replacing Boost Mobile as the team’s naming-rights sponsor. There was stability off track with Tom Moore and George Commins back as the engineers for Brown and Kostecki respectively, with the new cars and sponsor the only significant changes. And the team hit the ground running in the Gen3 era, leading the drivers’ and teams’ championships with Kostecki the driver to beat entering the last few rounds of the season. Kostecki will once again team with David Russell in the endurance events, while there’s also no changes for Brown with Jack Perkins back alongside him. With championship considerations at the fore, Russell and Perkins will be charged with helping Erebus Motorsport maintain its strong position in both championships as the title battle reaches its conclusion.

There was a new look for Team 18 in 2023 with Mark Winterbottom switching from Irwin Tools to Dewalt Tools sponsorship, while Scott Pye featured a rotating livery for their fourth season as teammates. After not scoring a podium since 2020, Team 18 will were hoping the switch to the Chevrolet Camaro results in a more consistent jump up the grid following the recent end of its winless run dating back to its foundation in 2013. The experienced engineering combination of Manuel Sanchez and Richard Hollway partner with Winterbottom and Pye respectively, with team owner Charlie Schwerkolt desperate for podiums and more wins in Gen3. Michael Caruso reunites with Winterbottom to form one of the most experienced combinations in the field for the endurance events. The team has recruited further experience with Warren Luff joining Pye, with Luff coming across to the team after being loaned out by Walkinshaw Andretti United.

FORD MUSTANG #3 TODD HAZELWOOD/ TIM BLANCHARD #7 JAKE KOSTECKI/ AARON LOVE The only single car team in Supercars was the first to unveil and run its Gen3 car. The Blanchard Racing Team enterered its third season as a standalone entry, after running out of Brad Jones Racing before 2021. And after two seasons with Tim Slade driving the team’s Ford Mustang, Todd Hazelwood took over the CoolDrive-backed entry. Hazelwood is joined by team owner Tim Blanchard for the endurance events. The team also expands to two entries for the enduros, ahead of a move to two cars full-time next season, with Jake Kostecki and Aaron Love teaming up in the second entry. Therefore, the endurance events will be a big test for the team, as it runs two cars for the first time in its short history.
