A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings Alumni and Friends! Welcome to Alumni Weekend 2013! The theme for the weekend is, “Empowered to Serve.” It is a joy to have you back on campus to fellowship with us and to celebrate WAU’s past and future. Our focus continues to be on student success and creating a culture of excellence by blending faith and learning. Our vision is still the same: To produce graduates who bring competence and moral leadership to their communities. We have an exciting weekend planned for you under the leadership of Ellie Barker, our new director of alumni relations. Ellie brings to her position passion and enthusiasm for Christian education and for Washington Adventist University. Please take the opportunity to get to know her. Friday evening vespers will feature outstanding WAU students who are dedicating themselves to living lives of service. Pastor Damon Hendrickson (‘02) will provide the spiritual emphasis for the Weekend as our Sabbath and Singspiration speaker. All events are listed in this program. I encourage you to attend the Betty Howard Center for Student Success and Faculty Development Painting Dedication, the New England Youth Ensemble concert, the Alumni Awards Banquet, and the Washington Adventist University Family Fun Festival. A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI PRESIDENT Dear Alumni, Family and Friends: Welcome to Alumni Weekend 2013! We are excited that you are here and we look forward to celebrating our shared heritage together. Whether you are alumni, student, family or friend, we welcome you to campus and hope you enjoy the weekend. As our Alumni leadership team considered the theme for the weekend, we kept in mind our vision and mission. “Empowered to Serve” represents the impact our alumni association should have on students, faculty, constituents, family, the community, and ourselves. It is an all-encompassing phrase that captures the power that each one of us has to create positive change. We encourage you to attend as many events as possible. From the President’s reception at the Votaw House on Friday evening, to the Sabbath Worship Services, and the business brunch meeting on Sunday morning, we seek your presence and your voice. It’s at the brunch meeting that your voice will be heard in a formal setting as we elect new officers and discuss new initiatives of the Office of Alumni Relations. As our University evolves, we are constantly looking up and aiming high. We invite you to share in the actualization of the lofty vision of the University—to produce graduates who bring competence and moral leadership to their communities. And, as the Lord continues to bless us, keep in mind that your involvement and contributions are essential to the growth of the University. We thank you for attending Alumni Weekend 2013 and may God bless you as we celebrate our rich heritage at Washington Adventist University. Sincerely, Mark Young (‘95) President, Alumni Association

He went beyond the call and transformed his group from a Bible study to a family group. This family model Bible study is now being replicated across the WAU campus. Bryan shows himself to be a lover of people on a daily basis, whether it’s through a random “I’m praying for you” text message or a smiling face that stops by just to say “hi.” He is a young man dedicated to serving others because he recognizes that’s who Christ has called him to be. Bryan enjoys seeing others grow in their gifts and talents and to use them for the glory of God. It brings him great joy to serve, mentor and learn from others. WASHINGTON ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY ALUMNI WEEKEND 2013
HONORARY ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Deria Gadsden Deria Gale Gadsden (Anderson), Mrs. G. to most, is the Assistant Registrar of Washington Adventist University. She joined the staff in September 1997 and plans to retire this summer. Deria was born in Greensboro, NC, on August 21st, 1950. She married Ronald Gadsden on July 1, 1973 and together they have three children; Dannyette (’98), Christopher (’00), and Clifton (’01) and four grandchildren, Warren IV, Savannah, Dylan, and Clifton, Jr. She attended Atlantic Union College, and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in education. She and Ronald moved to Binghamton, NY, where she began her career in education as a teacher’s assistant at Vestal Hills SDA Church School. While in Binghamton, she taught, became school board chair, sat on the board of Union Springs Academy, and served on the K-12 Board of Education for New York Conference. They moved to Poughkeepsie, New York, and again she worked at Poughkeepsie SDA School as a teacher assistant. The family moved to Tranquility, New Jersey so her oldest child could attend Garden State Academy. Within three months of the move, she began working for Garden State Academy. While there she worked as assistant registrar, class sponsor, yearbook sponsor and worked with the K-12 Board and served on the New Jersey Conference Committee. When her children all made the decision to attend Washington Adventist University, then Columbia Union College, she prayed for an opportunity to work closer to her children. She was offered a position at the university and, overnight, moved to Maryland with a house full of belongings left in New Jersey. The rest they say is history. Her impact at WAU has been, and will continue to be, immeasurable. She has seen all three of her children plus twenty or so nieces and nephews receive degrees from Washington Adventist University. Over the course of her career, Mrs. G, has impacted the lives of hundreds of students. She always knew she would make a difference in the world and has done so in every level of education, working with students from age of five through 80. Tough as nails and loving as a mother, she encourages the values of hard work and pride. Her children have followed her example and have chosen careers in education as well.
