Welcome to Sligo Church. Have you ever heard someone use the expression, “Good for nothing?” The phrase “good for nothing” refers to something or February 28, Saturday someone that is of little or no use or value, especially Patrick Lundy Concert, Sanctuary, 5:00 p.m. for the purpose that was intended. In the case of some material object such as a piece of machinery or one of March 1, Sunday the many electronic gadgets that we can’t seem to live without, to be Rose Bara Funeral, Sanctuary, 9:00 a.m. “good for nothing” would mean that is invariably useless. But when it Pathfinder Meeting, Office Chapel, 9:00 a.m. is used to refer to an individual, it describes someone that is self-indul55+ Club Brunch/Potluck, Fellowship Hall B, 10:00 a.m. gent and who spends a great deal of time avoiding work or some other Knitting Ministry, Discipleship Room, 11:00 a.m. useful activity. Some of the synonyms that are used to describe these kinds of people are words like bum or loafer and even slouch. Harsh March 2, Monday words indeed, but they definitely get the point across. But what I find Regeneration Ministries, Office Conference Room, 7:30 p.m. surprising is that Jesus himself used this very phrase in his Sermon First Monday, Fellowship Hall A, 7:00 p.m. on the Mount when referring to his church. How in the world could Jesus refer to the church, the apple of his eye in such a derogatory March 3, Tuesday way. Better yet, despite the harshness of it all, is it true? “The Christianity which acts like a shadow of gloom and a wet blanket is no true Christianity. The Christian is the man who, by his courage, his hope, his cheerfulness and his kindness brings a new flavour into life.”
