welcome Welcome to Sligo today. For the past several weeks, we’ve been sharing a series based on The Sermon on the Mount where we have reflected on the standards that Jesus has set for those who desire to be citizens of his kingdom. Jesus’ teaching in this well-known discourse is a counterculture gospel because it not only challenged the secular culture of Jesus’ day, but it also challenged the religious culture as well, because it did away with the prevailing idea of what it meant to be in good standing with God. No longer was one’s wealth or power considered to be a sign of God’s blessing, but now it meant recognizing one’s spiritual poverty and utter dependence upon God. But there is a teaching in this sermon that has been referred to by the 19th century preacher Oswald Chambers as, “The most revolutionary words that human ears have ever heard.” They are the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.” Today we will find out why these words were considered to be so revolutionary, then, as well as today, in our message, “Daily Devotion.” - Charles A. Tapp

Summary of our Beliefs • The Bible is the inspired word of God and our only rule of faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). • Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and our personal Savior from sin by grace through faith. (John 1:1-3; Ephesians 2:8). • Having been saved, followers of Jesus live in obedience to Him by observing the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20: 1-17; John 14:15). • The Sabbath – the seventh day of the week- established by God at creation and honored by Jesus in His earthly ministry, is to be observed by the followers of Jesus. (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 2:21). • Jesus is coming back to earth personally and visibly to raise the righteous dead and give His faithful children of all ages immortality in an earth made new. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 22:12; 21:1-3). • Our love for God is demonstrated primarily by our love for our fellowmen. (1 John 4:20; Matthew 25:34-40).

Leader: “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Congregation: Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Leader: Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? Congregation: “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; Leader: and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Congregation: Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith Leader: “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ Congregation: For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

OUR LIFE TOGETHER

sabbath devotional

“The moment you wake up each morning, all your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists in shoving it all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other, larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in.” - C. S. Lewis
