DESIGN FOR HERITAGE AND CONSERVATION
Community housing is an integral part of the housing system and aims to provide a housing option that is affordable, secure, responds to local community needs and supports tenant participation. The site, located in Dematagoda, is within walking distance to Borella junction which is a main urban node and part of the largest suburb in Colombo, Sri Lanka Today Borella has developed in to a major urban center connecting major suburbs in Colombo and creating opportunities and attracting a larger resident and a daily migrant population. Borella is famous for locating major hospitals, schools, commercial and institutional establishments, recreational play grounds, famous RCGC golf course and major high middle and low income residential settlements. Borella has a multi religious and multi cultural community With the urban sprawling the area has attracted a large population of low income poor quality residential neighborhoods which has evolved with time and continue to grow creating a chaotic environment for its inhabitants. Urban renewal is a program of land redevelopment often used to address urban decay in cities. It is the clearing out of shattered areas in inner cities and creates opportunities for better housing, businesses and other activities necessary for quality urban living. Along with creating housing in urban context, accepting challenges in urban renewal. A slum can be defined as a residential area where dwellings are not suitable due to poor infrastructure, overcrowding, lack of ventilation or sanitary and drinking water facilities. Slums in the cities of most third world countries can be viewed as a partial solution to a bigger problem. The communities living in these conditions represent a survival strategy in the face of insufficient affordable housing. These spaces often blend both the production and distribution spaces along with living quarters. Upgrading slums benefits a city by fostering inclusion resolving many social issues related to illegality, exclusion, barriers to basic services and social protection for vulnerable populations such as woman and children. Studies show that poor living conditions negatively affect physical and mental health. Inadequate or unsanitary living conditions can contribute to the spread of decease, preventing individuals from productivity and thereby threatening the wellbeing of a community. Legitimizing slum dwellers instead of driving them out of their homes will improve job opportunities in rural as well as urban areas.

HOUSING FOR URBAN RENEWABLE
This schematic architectural design is based on the Ranmasu Uyana, concentrating on the heritage and the significant and unique architectural features, while carrying out a design project that focuses on preservation, value addition and sustainability. Ranmasu Uyana, is located along with the built element comprising the complex of lsurimuniya is a well known location in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, located close to Tissa Wewa tank. Believed to have been first laid out in 3"' cen. BCE, the Ranmasu Uyana is well planned and large park complete with its own irrigation elements, pavilions, bathing pools and some other unique architectural features, and stands as a fine example of landscape driven architecture of ancient Sri Lanka The place at present, has distinct layers of architectural elements; one that of a pleasure garden with irrigation and landscaping elements, and one that of a Buddhist religious elements that evidently were introduced much later on in its historical timeline. The irrigation system of the place is of special interest and intricacy and is directly connected to the Tissa Wewa to ensure a steady supply of water to the pools and baths of the park. Project Scope and Stages: The project will be limited to the area currently recognized as 'Isurumuniya and Ranmasu Uyana' in the limits of the ancient city of Anuradhapura The aim of the project was to come up with a hypothetical strategy for an architectural design solution which integrates the building ruins and landscape elements of the area as an effective heritage conservation project that will; Understand and appreciate the philosophical background of planning and architecture that has been implemented in the design of the site Preserve and enhance the heritage value of the site and its building and landscape elements Enhance the experience of place by the visitor in such way that it emphasizes both the heritage value and their leisurely enjoyment Improve the core socio economic value of the site as applicable to the present
COMMUNITY HOUSING
WANATHAMULLA T20 WATTA
STRUCTURE
The “Meda Midula“ concept of the ancient villages is created in a vertical manner. The inhabitants are mostly dealing with the ground in the present context. Therefore creating the sense of ground was a mandatory design feature.
FACADE
The façade is designed to diffuse the harsh sunlight that falls on the building surface It also provides shade from the rain as well as allows the dwelling to be naturally ventilated.
