INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE FOR INDIGENOUS TECHNOLOGIES IN SRI

LANKA

Project type Research center

Site Location Homagama Sri Lanka

Duration June 2022 August 2022

Software Used AutoCAD Lumion Revit

KALANI ELANGASINHA 2022 PORTFOLIO 6

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The location of the site is in the Homagama ps division's Mahenwaththa, Pitipana The surrounding area of the site has been proposed as a tech corridor in the Homagama Development Plan Additionally, a thorough examination was required to determine the type of research, innovation, and business development center because the area around the site contains so many R and D centers, tech related universities, and firms. The hoamagama development plan 2019 2030 makes it clear that this area will be transformed into a tech city corridor, however when we take a closer look at the current state of affairs and the growth of this area into a globally recognized tech city, we can notice some problems emerging. Consequently, in order for a tech city to grow, recognition from the general public and other international businesses is crucial. To achieve this, we will have to compete with nearby tech cities (India, Singapore etc.). Moreover, we also require the full cooperation of the locals in that region So, when we take a closer look at this problem, we can see that there is a need for a project that can establish a presence in the global network of technological cities and that will also be attractive to both international businesses and the local population. What is required is a distinctiveness for our tech city so we can compete and elevate our Sri Lankan tech city globally. An appropriate project is required to lower the risk variables and demonstrate how this development is carried out. Thus, that will be Innovative research and development center for indigenous technologies in Sri Lanka.

KALANI ELANGASINHA 2022 PORTFOLIO 24

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Kanneliya Rain Forest is located in south western part of Sri Lanka (about 35 km northeast of Galle)

At 6 09’ - 6 18’ North and 80 19’ 80 27’ East.

This whole area is called as kanneliya forest complex, it's a mix of 3 forest

1) Kanneliya (belongs to Galle district)

2) Dediyagala (most of it belongs to Matara district)

3) Nakiyadeiya (most of it belongs to Matara district)

The existing state of kannelliya forest reserve tourism, is not conducive to long-term ecotourism. It has a number of flaws that might negatively impact the forest reserve both directly and indirectly The richness and survival of the forest reserve could be threatened by the way it is now maintained Therefore, we run the risk of damaging the forest and the community if we implement efforts that lure tourists to this area

As indicated by tour operators and the village people, there is pollution generated by tourists who visit this location The main issue that everyone notices is that they leave massive amounts of garbage However, there are indirect pollutions that may occur as the number of tourists increases over time Such as air pollution caused by vehicles and sound pollution caused by the noises they make.

So, if we wish to protect the forest, tourists that visit this area must behave properly As a conclusion, it is necessary to use the thematic project of the museum and information center to enlighten them about the importance of Kanneliya, the relevance of biodiversity conservation, and how we can do so by altering their behavior and thinking.
