PROJECT SUMMARY

Introduction

This project is about analysing and understanding a character, arriving at a concept and representing it through design.

Background

During the bygone periods of Sinhala Kings , there was a comedian called Andare who was employed to amuse the King and his Ministers. One of the most popular folk stories in Sri Lanka is the story of Andare. Andare was born in the South of Sri Lanka in a village in Matara District . Folklore has many stories about Andare and the pranks he played on the King, his Ministers and even the Queen. He was appointed by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe (1742 - 1782). Andare used to be a poet who could instantly compose verses to suit any ongoing situation. Despite being a joker, the tales suggest Andare had a great intelligence that aided him in turning situations to his favour. After his death he was buried in the town of Udamalala, his hometown, where the tomb can be found on the banks of the Udamalala wewa.

Project type Anthropometrics and Ergonomics Duration 26th of April 2022 - 30th of May 2022 Representation Hand drawn Anthropometrics Human body and space

PROJECT SUMMARY

Introduction

The ability for a human to function in this world depends on the size and measurements of the human body itself in relation to its surrounding environment. Therefore, when designing the built environment or objects for human use, it is essential to take into consideration the measurements of the human body or body parts concerned. Planning and designing spaces and objects that can be accessed and manipulated by human beings without difficulty makes up for a healthy and fulfilling life experience, and as designers and manipulators of space, architects need to possess a good understanding of how a space functions compared to the human body and its movements.

Anthropometrics : The study of the measurement of human body, its proportions and movements.

It is also concerned with parameters such as reach and visual range capabilities. Simple measurements as weight, stature, length, breadth and depth of stationary human beings is referred to as Static or Structural Anthropometry and compound measurements of moving human beings as reach and angular variants of different joints are known as Dynamic or Functional Anthropometry.

Ergonomics : The relationship of the human body, its properties and movements to the surrounding environment.

Ergonomics are important in terms of designing spaces and objects that can be used efficiently and safely by the user.

Task 01 - Group Work

Le Corbusier Modulus

Charles- Jeanneret (6 October 1887 - 27 August 1965), known as Le Corbusier was a SwissFrench architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of what is now regarded as modern architecture. He was born in Switzerland and became a French citizen in 1930. His career spanned five decades, and he designed buildings in Europe, Japan, India, and North and South America.

Dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities, Le Corbusier was influential in urban planning, and was a founding member of the dArchitectureModerne(CIAM).

Le Corbusier prepared the master plan for the city of Chandigarh in India, and contributed specific designs for several buildings there, especially the government buildings.

On 17 July 2016, seventeen projects by Le Corbusier in seven countries were inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement.

Le Corbusier remains a controversial figure. Some of his urban planning ideas have been criticized for their indifference to pre-existing cultural sites, societal expression and equality, and his alleged ties with fascism, antisemitism, and eugenics and the dictator Benito Mussolini have resulted in some continuing contention.

The Modulor is a universal, anthropometric scale of proportions, created by the Swiss-born French architect Le Corbusier, devised to measure and reconcile maths, the human form, architecture and beauty into a single system.

Right after the end of the Second World War, Le Corbusier thought of a way to unite two virtually incompatible systems: the Anglo-Saxon foot and inch and the French metric system. During this time, he devised the first bases of the Modulor, a scale of harmonic measures that set architectural elements in proportion to human stature.

Initially, the Modulor mans height was based on a French mans average height of 1.75 meters, but it changed to 1.83 m in 1946. The dimensions were subsequently refined to give round numbers. Then, in 1950, the theory was perfected, and the human model was set at 2.262 m.

Task 03

Camping Kitchen

Introduction

Camping is a recreational outdoor activity which involves overnight stays away from home in a shelter. This recreational activity dates back to 1880 s and said to be popularized in UK on the river Thames.

Later it evolves to many areas and present-day camping may be combined with hiking as in back packing and is in conjunction with outdoor activities such as canoeing, climbing, fishing, and hunting. To be regarded as camping a minimum of one night spent outdoors is required and this involves in getting the meals prepared for overnight stay at the camping site.

Project Brief

This project is about designing a portable camping kitchen which will enable to prepare a meal for two persons, who are camping partners.

Project Summery

An artist is a creative person who spends time to express their creativity through different media. Some through Painting, some through dance and others through other different art forms using nonconventional media such as metal, glass, clay and visual technology. Regardless of the medium they use, every artist seeks to express their ideas, ideals and emotions in a creative manner. In this day and age, advances in science and technology has opened a broader range of artistic media for creative individuals, ranging from digital media, interactive art installations as well as the peculiar niche of street art, graffiti, and art created using industrial by products.

Creative people have unique characters and individual ways in which they feel comfortable in doing what they do, and in this regard, they highly value their private workspace. So often it is a private place for them to reflect, find sanctuary and carry out their creative worksometimes novel projects of experimental nature. It not only needs to have the right atmosphere but also be practical enough to be able to carry out the Artist s work while catering to the basic human needs of space.

In this project the students are expected to design a small freestanding building which is a studio cum Bedsitter for a creative artist at a selected site.

House Design Personalized House Project type Personalized House Design Duration 09th of September 2022 - 28th of October 2022 Representation Hand drawn Portfolio 2022 Raminda Lekamge 38

Project Summery

A house is building where people live in and conduct their private lives. It is a place to dwell, and to feel at home. The architecture and expression of what a house is has changed dramatically with time, and will also change based on the owner, site, and climate. The culture of the society and social strata will also have a profound effect on how a house is arranged in terms of space. Therefore, it is essential to understand for whom you are designing for, where it will be located and how the client perceives a house and the activities that will take place in it. The architect also will have to consider how each client perceives their own household - for some it will be the centre of their existence and own personal haven, and for others it will be mostly the space where they wind down from the point of view and their attitude towards life and family is therefore crucial for formulating their actual requirements of the house. In this project, you are expected to design a personalized house which can become a home for a selected family at a given specific site.
