ADAM AUERBACH Adam Auerbach is an illustrator and graphic designer. He attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and his illustrations have appeared on book covers and in numeous print publications, including the New York Times. His first book, EDDA: A LITTLE VALKYRIEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, received an Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Honor. He is currently working on his next picture book, MONKEY BROTHER.

Chris Gall has been drawing pictures for as long as he can remember. When he was caught doodling on his desk in second grade, his teacher suggested that he might become an artist some day, then made him clean all the desks in the classroom. In seventh grade, Chris won a Read Magazine Young Writers Award, and that inspired him to create stories to go with his art. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Chris became an awardwinning, internationally recognized illustrator, and his artwork has been shown in almost every publication in America, including Time, Newsweek, People, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. In 2004, his first picture book, America the Beautiful, became a Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book of the Year, and his career in children’s publishing began. Since then he has authored and illustrated eleven more books, including the acclaimed Dinotrux, a 2009 Publishers Weekly Best Children’s book, Dog Vs. Cat, Revenge of the Dinotrux, Awesome Dawson, and Substitute Creacher. In August of 2015 Netflix began airing Dinotrux, an animated television series produced by DreamWorks. Chris has also worked as an adjunct professor of art at the University of Arizona and spent four years as a professional stand-up comedian. He currently lives in Tucson, Arizona.

DAVID GOLDIN David Goldin received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. A lefthanded accordion enthusiast and international junk collector, Goldin has worked for R.O. Blechman at the Ink Tank, an animation studio, while also working for Steven Heller at The New York Times Book Review and as an assistant to Tomi Ungerer. He is a self- proclaimed magazine brat, illustrator, author, and artist.

Goldin’s mixed media artwork presents viewers with fantastical and warped creatures whose features are animated by twisted metal chains and old door latches. These dynamic pieces are full of movement and feeling, calling for play and capturing innocence. Like most kids, Mike loved to draw but he ran into some trouble early on when his drawing of a werewolf was deemed ‘too realistic” by his worried first grade teacher (he had been watching scary movies with his brothers). Luckily, he turned to lighter fare after that, creating his own comics and has been doing so ever since. His books include COMICS TO GO!, MONSTER COMICS, DOGGIE DREAMS and HICCUP. When not drawing and painting, Mike likes to play bluegrass banjo. He lives in New York City with his wife, two sons, and a cat.

JOYCE HESSELBERTH Joyce Hesselberth’s illustrations have appeared in national ad campaigns, theater productions, and numerous major newspapers and magazines. She also illustrates children’s books, and has published two educational apps, PrestoBingo Shapes and PrestoBingo Colors which are available on the Mac App Store. Her debut picture book, SHAPE SHIFT, just received it’s first starred review from Kirkus.

Her work has been recognized by American Illustration, Society of Illustrators, and the Art Directors’ Club of New York among others. She and her husband David Plunkert co-founded Spur Design in 1995. Spur Design is located in a renovated factory building in Baltimore, MD. In addition to writing and illustrating for children and running her own studio, Joyce also teaches illustration at Maryland Institute College of Art.

REBECCA JORDAN-GLUM Rebecca Jordan-Glum is a Los Angeles based artist, illustrator, designer, and writer. She has a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York where she graduated with the Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Illustration. The first children’s picture book that she illustrated, A FAIRY TALE, (written by author Candy Grant and published by Omnibus) is the recipient of a 2015 Gold Mom’s Choice Award.

Shanda McCloskey studied art at Kennesaw State University and Atlanta College of Art. She taught art in a Georgia high school immediately after graduating, but soon realized that she was happiest making art herself verses teaching others to do so. She marveled at the thought of illustrating and writing children’s books. After two years of teaching, Shanda and her husband packed up and moved to Brooklyn so Shanda could attend children’s book classes at the School of Visual Arts. Now back in Georgia, Shanda is a mother of two girls, an art director for her husband’s web development company, and an author-illustrator. She is highly involved in SCBWI and in her local critique group. Shanda also blogs and leads kids art workshops at libraries in her community.

TIM MILLER Tim Miller is an author and illustrator of Picture Books. His debut picture book MOO MOO IN A TUTU published by Balzer & Bray is due out in early 2017. MARYJO SCOT T MaryJo Scott grew up in the rolling hills of upstate New York, catching frogs and tadpoles at the pond with her older brothers. She now lives in the rolling hills of Connecticut with her husband and three children, one dog, one chinchilla, two geckos and a flock of talkative chickens. MaryJo is both an illustrator and writer. She won the Tassy Walden Award: New Voices In Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Literature, in 2013, for best illustrated picture book and was a portfolio showcase winner at the LA-SCBWI in 2012.

DAVID SOMAN David Soman grew up in a family of artists and has always loved drawing, painting and telling stories. He has illustrated many books, most notably those written by the incredible Angela Johnson, including “Tell Me A Story, Mama”, “One of Three”, and “When I Am Old With You” (A Coretta Scott King Honor Book). More recently he has been co-writing, with his wife Jacky Davis, and illustrating the NY Times best-selling “Ladybug Girl” book series. His first completely solo project, ”Three Bears in a Boat” was published in 2014. At the moment he is working on a book about a boy, a monster, a tree house, and a sousaphone. When not working on a new book, or napping, David is an instructor at The School of Visual Arts in NYC. David lives in Rosendale, NY, with his wife, two children, and a big, furry, shed- beast named Pico.

MIKA SONG Mika Song is a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s writer/illustrator. She graduated from Pratt with a degree in animation and worked as an animator at BrainPOP before turning her attention to childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books. Now, Mika draws and writes sweetly funny stories about outsiders. She received the Portfolio Award at the 2015 SCBWI Winter Conference and is working on her debut picture book coming out in Summer 2017 with HarperCollins.

Zoey graduated from Smith College with a major in Women’s Studies and a minor in History. Soon thereafter, she moved to Japan where she studied sumi-e brush painting and calligraphy. She never went to “art school” but has always found the best art teachers wherever she lived. She lives in Portland, Oregon and has two children, one husband and a huge dog named Carrots. She thinks a picture is always worth a thousand friends.

STAN & JAN BERENSTAIN Stanley Melvin Berenstain and Janice Marian Grant were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and met in 1941 while attending the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts. Stan was drafted into the Army during World War II and served from 1943 to 1946. Blind in one eye, he was given limited service and spent most of his army career as a medical illustrator at an army hospital in Indiana where he began drawing and publishing cartoons in magazines. During the war, Jan worked as a draftsman for the Army Corps of Engineers and as an aircraft riveter. Stan and Jan married right after the war and began their careers as a magazine cartoonist team, publishing cartoons revolving around family humor in The Saturday Evening Post, Colliers Magazine, McCall’s, Good Housekeeping.

They started their own family in 1948 with the birth of their son, Leo, followed by Mike in 1951. Since both sons were big Dr. Seuss fans, Stan and Jan decided to try their hands at creating a children’s book themselves; The Big Honey Hunt was released in 1962 with Dr. Seuss (aka Ted Seuss Geisel) himself as the editor and publisher. More than three hundred Berenstain Bears books have followed in the fifty-three years since, and total sales of the series have topped 300 million copies. Their son, Mike, a children’s book author-illustrator himself, joined his parents in their continued magazine work and by 1992 moved on to illustrating and co-writing Berenstain Bears books. In 2004, Mike suggested to Stan and Jan that they create a new sub-line of Berenstain Bears books that reflect spiritual themes, co-creating the first four titles in the ongoing Living Lights series released by Zondervan, a division of HarperCollins, in 2008. The Berenstain Bears series has also been adapted for TV in animated specials for NBC and cartoon series for both CBS and PBS. The characters have also been featured as dolls, toys, games, puzzles, software, clothing and many other products. After a long illness, Stan passed away in November 2005, at the age of eighty-two and Jan died in February 2012, at the age of eighty-eight. Mike continues to write and illustrate Berenstain Bears books on all sorts of subjects—everything from going for a ride on a train to “the golden rule.” He lives and works in the rolling countryside of Eastern Pennsylvania--a place that looks very much like Berenstain Bear Country.

MARIE HALL ETS Marie Hall Ets was born in Milwaukee, WI, in 1895. She studied art for a short time, held a series of jobs and lived in a few different cities until she eventually moved to Chicago and became a social worker. It was then and there that she began working with and advocating for children. She returned to school, studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, before she began working in books. She wrote, illustrated, and published 21 books in about 40 years, primarily known for her work in children’s picture books. Ets loved writing for young children, especially kids of the age where their parents still read to them. She was greatly influenced by her own childhood—growing up in the northern woods of Wisconsin, surrounded by wildlife and wilderness. The first book she wrote, though not the first book she published, was THE LITTLE OLD AUTOMOBILE, which she made a cloth copy of for her nephew. From 1945-1966, five of Ets’ books were named Honor Books, or runners-up, for the Caldecott Medal, an award which recognizes the most distinguished American picture books for children from the preceding year. In 1960, Marie Hall Ets won the award with her book NINE DAYS TO CHRISTMAS, written by Ets and Aurora Labastida. Ets passed away in 1984 but many of books are still available in print and digital editions. They continue to delight a whole new generation of children today.

Don Freeman, born in 1908 in San Diego, California, was a children’s book author and illustrator perhaps most well known for the lovable classic character CORDUROY. He wrote and illustrated more than 20 books throughout his life, some of which were co-authored by his wife, Lydia. Don is also known as a graphic artist who vividly portrayed the street life and theater world of New York City in the 1930’s and 40’s. He was always carrying a sketchbook with him wherever he went, just in case inspiration struck. Freeman was introduced to children’s literature when William Saroyan, a fellow author, asked him to illustrate several books. Freeman was once quoted as saying, “Simplicity is the essence of children’s-book stories, not simple-mindedness.” In 1958, one of Freeman’s books, FLY HIGH, FLY LOW, was elected a Caldecott Honor Book. The Caldecott Medal is an award which recognizes the most distinguished American picture books for children from the preceding year.

Lois Lenski, born in Springfield, Ohio in 1893, is a well-known children’s book and young adult author. She studied at Ohio State University, graduating with a B.S. in education and a teaching certificate. After some encouragement from her teachers, she moved to New York to study at the Art Students League, where she took classes for four years. During those four years, Lenski studied abroad in London and was hired to illustrate books for a British publisher. Many of Lenski’s stories were inspired by her own life and the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was also inspired by her move to the South, where she experienced different cultures and populations that she hadn’t had contact with in the North. These experiences sparked her Regional Stories series, which often depicted underrepresented populations, and Roundabout series, which dealt with similar populations but was aimed at a younger audience. Two of Lenski’s historical fiction novels for preteens, PHEBE FAIRCHILD and INDIAN CAPTIVE, were Newbery Honor books. The Newbery Medal is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. In 1946, Lois Lenski won the Newbery Medal for her book STRAWBERRY GIRL. Lois Lenski died in 1974 at her home in Florida. Many of her books remain in print and continue to sell today.

MARTIN & ALICE PROVENSEN Alice and Martin Provensen wrote and edited nineteen children’s books together, and illustrated over 20 more. They were both born in Chicago, IL, and both grew up in California. The couple met during World War II when Martin was working as a training film creator and was assigned to Walter Lantz Studio, where Alice worked. They moved to Washington, D.C. shortly after they were married in 1944. After the war, the Provensens moved to New York City where they began illustrating children’s books. And, later, moved to a farm in upstate New York which became the inspiration for many of their later works. A VISIT TO WILLIAM BLAKE’S INN by Nancy Willard received a Caldecott Medal Honor Book in 1982, and won the Newbery Medal in the same year. In 1984, the Provensens won the Caldecott Medal for THE GLORIOUS FLIGHT which they both wrote and illustrated. When Martin passed away in 1987 Alice continued taking care of the farm and making children’s book. It is only recently that Alice sold the farm and moved to California to live with her daughter. Alice is still making books today and the Provensen’s work continues to be celebrated and exhibited around the country.

Born in 1907 in Dallas, TX, Hardie Gramatky was destined to become an artist. When he was in fifth grade, he would go out at 6 AM to sketch before school with a friend. As a young boy growing up in California, he submitted sketches to the “young folks section” of the LA Times, earning himself a reputation as a leading artist. He studied English at Stanford, where he also took art classes until the teachers admitted they had nothing left to teach him. He enrolled in Chouinard Art Institute, where he became interested in watercolor paintings and met his future wife, Dorothea Cooke, a fellow student. He worked for six years as a senior animator at the Walt Disney Studios, honing his skills and learning to give life to his characters and artwork. Hardie Gramatky and his wife moved to New York City in 1936 to find work as freelance illustrators and artists. Hardie rented an office space that looked out on the East River, and that office space ended up giving him the brilliant idea for his first children’s book, LITTLE TOOT, published in 1939. Every time he looked out his office window, he saw a scene that inspired him. “It was an orderly world at that, except for one small detail. A playful little tugboat kept getting in the way,” he wrote. He took that tugboat’s playful energy and began writing and illustrating a story that everyone could relate to-- a story of a little tugboat that couldn’t seem to get things right. After a few years in the city, Hardie and Doppy, along with their daughter Linda, moved to Connecticut. It was close enough to New York that Hardie could continue working as a commercial illustrator for a variety of magazines, but it also provided him the atmosphere he wanted for his family. Unique for many reasons, Hardie was able to see the beauty around him anywhere he happened to be. His house in Connecticut provided the perfect setting for his painting, and he continued working on his children’s books, as well. His art was exhibited at numerous museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Frye Art Museum. At the time of his death in 1979, Hardie Gramatky had published 14 children’s books that he wrote and illustrated. His wife and daughter put the finishing touches on his final book, LITTLE TOOT AND THE LOCK NESS MONSTER, ten years after his death in 1989.

Peter Spier, born in Amsterdam in 1927, immigrated to the United States in 1950. The first book he illustrated, THE COW WHO FELL INTO THE CANAL, was a job he came about randomly-- he saw the manuscript in his editor’s office and asked if he could do some illustrations for it. Luckily, the editor loved what Spier did and the book was published in 1957. He was known for doing extensive research on the locations and topics of his books, whether that meant heading down to the zoo to sketch or traveling across the world to France. Spier knows he is fortunate, and was quoted saying, “I am a very lucky man to have earned a living by doing my hobby.” In 1962, his book THE FOX WENT OUT ON A CHILLY NIGHT was a Caldecott Honor Book. For NOAH’S ARK Spier won the Caldecott Medal in 1977, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1978, and the National Book Award in the Picture Book Category in 1982. Most recently, Peter Spier has been working alongside his publishers to make his books available in digital editions. Some titles, like THE FOX WENT OUT ON A CHILLY NIGHT and THE LEGEND OF NEW AMSTERDAM have been updated with new coloring and art.

WILLIAM WONDRISKA William Wondriska founded Wondriska Associates in Connecticut in 1961. Many of the original clients were non-profit institutions. Mr. Wondriska was the designer for the Walker Arts Center in the beginning of Martin Friedman’s tenure as Director. The office has done projects for the Art Institute of Chicago, Yale Art Gallery, Wadsworth Atheneum, National Gallery of Art, Grand Palais, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Norton Gallery, and the International Museum of Cartoon Art. Mr. Wondriska and Peg Cogswell of the Smithsonian Institution produced the National Museum of American Art’s Public Programs information system. Wondriska Associates was known for developing image and marketing programs for such clients as United Technologies Corporation, John Wiley & Sons, Travelers Corporation, Walt Disney Company, the Washington Post’s information subsidiary, Legi-Slate, National Science Center, Bulfinch Press, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Museum of Fine Arts - Boston, Yale School of Management, Junior Literary Guild, Aetna, Children’s Television Workshop, Loctite Corporation, Connecticut Public Television and Radio, Choate Rosemary Hall, Hotchkiss School, Miss Porter’s School, American School in Paris and Richmond College, London. The work of the office is included in many collections, including the Library of Congress and in many professional publications, both here and in Europe and Japan. Early in his career, Mr. Wondriska wrote and illustrated eleven well reviewed children’s books. They are: THE SOUND OF THINGS, 1, 2, 3 A BOOK TO SEE, PUFF, WHICHWAY TO THE ZOO?, A LONG PIECE OF STRING, ALL BY MYSELF, THE TOMATO PATCH, JOHN JOHN TWILLINGER, MR. BROWN AND MR. GRAY, ALL THE ANIMALS WERE ANGRY, AND THE STOP. Mr. Wondriska is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BAE) and Yale University (BFA, MFA). Mr. Wondriska has lectured in many universities and design schools in the country and was Senior Critic in design at Yale. He was the President of the Yale Arts Association, Regent of the University of Hartford, and President of the Board of Trustees of the Hartford Art School. He was also the inaugural inductee in the CADC (Connecticut Art Directors Club) Hall of Fame in 1955. Mr. Wondriska is the recipient of several national and international design awards. William Wondriska, originally from Oak Park, Illinois, is retired from his Connecticut office and now resides in Concord, Massachusetts.
