FUTURE 2010 ANNUAL REPORT
Legacy for the Future We celebrate our new and permanent home—an historic house where we can continue to build a strong and vibrant community. 550 Dana Street will serve as a symbolic reminder to be inspired by the past even as we create the future.
Y O U R C O M M U N I T Y F O U N D AT I O N H A S D E S I R E D A PERMANENT HOME FOR OUR OFFICES FOR MANY Y E A R S N OW. I T H A S B E E N A PA R T O F O U R S T R AT EG I C PL A N SI N C E 20 07. In the fall of 2010, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came about and the Community Foundation now owns the historic Barneberg House at 550 Dana Street, in downtown San Luis Obispo. Built in 1914, this stately, spacious home was made possible through generous donations from the Hind Foundation, previous owner Jim Duenow, and many friends of the Foundation. The move takes place this summer. Named for the well-known Dana family, the street where our new home resides has a second meaning. The word Dana in Buddhism means the practice of cultivating generosity, an apt and delightful discovery. With important ties to a rich and storied past, this registered landmark house offers us a permanent home with room to grow and prosper in the future.
Toward that end, more and more people are partnering with us to achieve their philanthropic goals. Together we have granted out more than $16 million; and have aggregated more than $30 million for current and future generations. During this growth, Kathy Evans served as Finance Manager. We celebrate her retirement after ten years of service. Also, we thank Wendy Brown for her two years as President of the Board of Directors. Her leadership during the worst of the Great Recession and the uncertainty of the recovery was remarkable. And we welcome new people to the team. Rabbi Norman Mendel has joined the Board of Directors, while Holly Corbett and Michelle Romonek have joined the staff as Director of Finance and Finance Assistant, respectively. In this report you will read about some of the programs and services of your Community Foundation, with more complete information available on our website. Join our mailing list to receive our regularly scheduled electronic newsletters by sending a request to info@sloccf.org.

The study found that San Luis Obispo County’s transfer of wealth to the next generations over the next 50 years could be as much as $62 billion. Commissioned by the Community Foundation, this report sparked a different way to think about giving. “Many of our clients think first of their families as the beneficiaries of their estates,” said Rob Garcia, of Rob Garcia Wealth Management. “This study illustrated for me what a tremendous impact we can have if everyone were to leave just 5% of their estate to the community.
