Conscious Stewardship, Strong Leadership. In this past year, we listened to numerous

individuals and organizations describe the Community Foundation and what is expected of us. The more we listened, the more we learned. The “word cloud above represents words used to describe the Community Foundation. (continued on page 2)

Everyone asked us to provide more leadership. But Community Leadership is a difficult concept to pin down. Civic leaders ask us to gather people together to address the most perplexing problems facing our communities. Nonprofits ask us to provide more support services. One thing that is clear is that people’s expectations of us grew because we were so stable during the turmoil of the Great Recession.

People and organizations want the Community Foundation to be strong. In fact, we heard clearly that the stronger the Community Foundation, the stronger the community. Our challenge is to meet as many expectations as possible without overextending ourselves. Our Leadership Fund makes possible most of our Community Leadership work. We must build the Leadership Fund and you are invited to contribute to it. Your Community Foundation is bouncing back as the national economy recovers. The financial reports on page 8 show that we achieved strong returns on investments as well as generous donations from donors who partner with us in their philanthropic plans.

Our reliance on endowed funds means that our grantmaking is reduced because of lower endowment values. We are committed to protecting donor intent and restrictions and to not invade the original gift value of funds. The level of grantmaking will increase as the endowment values recover. In this past year, two Board members completed their terms of service: Lyn Baker and Barbie Butz. Both served with distinction and we welcome them into the ranks of Director Emeritus. Three new Board members joined us: Donn Clickard, Mike Patrick, and Johnine Talley. We also welcomed Pat Holley to the staff as Donor Services Associate. Pat joins us through the AmeriCorps Program. We invite you to explore the Community Foundation through our website, www.sloccf.org. If you would prefer to receive this annual report and other communications from us electronically, please tell us by sending a message to info@sloccf.org. In closing, we express our sincere gratitude to everyone who helps make the Community Foundation stronger. This is your community, and this is your foundation.
