Back pain? Exercise. Swim!

The distinguishing feature of Slovenian natural spas are modern health centres and specialist clinics, as well as medical and preventive programmes. Experienced specialists, trained to provide successful rehabilitation, know how to restore mobility, prevent deterioration of certain conditions, and mitigate or eliminate pain. Tanja

Rauter Pungartnik is among the specialists who take care of rehabilitation and physical medicine in Slovenian spas. What does she advise if you are experiencing one of the most common kinds of pain?

As many as 8 out of 10 people are said to experience lower back pain during their lifetime, and up to 20 per cent of people are said to be dealing with this pain at any given moment. Why is this so common?

“Lower back pain is associated with bending over, rotational loads, lifting loads and prolonged forced posture. Being overweight and smoking are also risk factors. Lower back pain is caused by psychosocial factors: emotional tension, job dissatisfaction, anxiety and depression. Pregnancy also increases the possibility of lower back pain. Although these are mostly short-term and moderate passing pains, about 5 per cent of people develop chronic pain that prevents them from enjoying their daily activities. Lower back pain is the second most common symptom – right after headache, otherwise lower back or spine issues are two of the most common reasons for sick leave in the population under 45 years old.”

If virtually everyone knows this pain and if we are used to it coming and going, is it reasonable to diagnose it?

“Yes. Lower back pain can occur due to various underlying causes. We are familiar with mechanical pain, pain due to compression of nerve structures,

pain due to injuries or with pathological, most often osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Pain can be caused by bacterial inflammation or by tumour processes. It can be transmitted to the lower back from the internal organs. Most often the cause is mechanical – related to body movements and physical activity. This is usually felt as a sharp, even burning pain that can spread to the lower limbs, down to the knees. The pain can also be due to spine instability. Dull and deep pain is caused by degeneration of the intervertebral disc and is most pronounced when bending forward. If the pain is sharp and worst when bending back, this may be due to vertebrae instability. In the case of herniated intervertebral disc and spinal stenosis, compression occurs and pain in the lower back is joined by pain in the leg, which is more intense when straining or gets worse when walking. Bending forward may somewhat ease the pain. Lower back pain can also be a sign of an inflammatory disease, e.g. if it is worse in the morning and subsides after physical activity. Based on the history, it is certainly good to carry out a diagnostic procedure.

In Slovenian natural health resorts and spas, we have excellent knowledge, modern diagnostic equipment and plenty of experience with successful rehabilitation.”

24
Slovenia – healthy waters

Correct diagnosis is the foundation of appropriate treatment. But how can we take care of the spine and lower back before more serious illnesses and pain conditions arise?

"With proper posture and spine exercises. Due to everyday stress, irregular movement, incorrect carrying of loads and uneven activation of the body, our posture deteriorates. Due to poor posture, the course of the spine is no longer correct and various deformations occur. As a result, the kinematics also deteriorates in other joints –shoulders, knees, hips, which can lead to limited movement as well as circulatory and breathing disorders. That's why it's really important to take care of a good upright posture, sit and lie down correctly and lift loads with care. Regular physical activity is important. I recommend exercises to increase mobility, strength and endurance, as well as exercises to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles, strengthen the muscles of the buttocks, stretch the hip flexors and the muscles of the lower back. Moderate workout increases bone strength. Walking, running and other sports where the body overcomes its own weight also help with this. Exercising in the water is also beneficial, because water supports the body, and the moderate temperature of the water warms the body and thus relaxes the spine. Buoyancy force supports the weight of the body, so the pressure on the lower back is lessened. Swimming activates almost every muscle in the spine while maintaining general endurance and flexibility."

Back to sports

Specialists in physical and rehabilitation medicine, physiotherapists, masseurs and other professionals ensure that your return to an active life is faster and safer after injuries or various interventions. Professional and recreational athletes can rely on individually designed rehabilitation programme in case of injuries. Clinical and functional assessment of the condition is followed by a physiotherapeutic diagnosis, prognosis and rehabilitation plan, which includes state-of-the-art equipment, appropriately selected procedures and therapies, and the use of natural healing factors. Slovenian natural health resorts and spas boast excellent rehabilitation results.

To stay healthy, drink healthy waters

Use your time in natural health resorts and spas for drinking treatment. After consultation with a balneologist, drink natural mineral and thermo-mineral waters, proven to be effective, according to the recommended schedule. In Rogaška Slatina, drink water with the highest content of magnesium in the world in the famous glass mineral water drinking hall. In Radenci drink the famous water, marked with three hearts, from the oldest spring. In other spas, you can also drink thermal-mineral waters, which not only rehydrate your body, but also help with the content of various minerals. When on vacation, you can get into the habit of drinking healthy water. After returning home, maintain it by drinking selected mineral waters.

The sense of peace in us is preserved by rituals we learn on vacation and carry them with us to our everyday life. Exercise changes the start of our day. Drinking mineral water helps with maintaining our health. With evening meditation, we put aside our worries before going to bed. May a break in the spa be a time to start your favourite personal ritual!

In natural health resorts and spas, various programmes and schools of healthy living are available, focusing on the rituals of various traditional medicines, exercise under the guidance of experts and healthy eating. When it comes to calming your mind, you can start by exercising in water or in a natural outdoor environment. Learn how to meditate. Relax with rituals and massages inspired by Indian, Japanese, Thai, Chinese and other ancient wisdoms.

When it comes to nutrition, get to know your body and your character and allow yourself to be advised which way of eating will be the most suitable for you. You can choose from weight-loss or fasting programmes. Nutrition experts advise you on the appropriate intake of various substances according to your conditions. Ayurvedic experts teach you how to choose a diet according to your own personal characteristics and according to the season. Use the time off to establish a healthy lifestyle you can also implement at home. Establish your own rituals and find the right way to calm yourself down.

Asanas for every day

Warrior 1

The position increases the strength of the muscles of the legs, ankles and knees; relaxes and strengthens the back muscles, and stimulates the throat. Regular exercise increases inner strength and will, we develop openness and joy with it.

Warrior 2

The position strengthens the muscles of the arms and back and stretches the entire spine and the back of the legs; increases blood circulation and has a positive effect on the brain. Provides fresh energy to the body and calms it down at the same time.

A different kind of morning

Let's start in the morning. A glass of warm water with a little bit of honey helps to rehydrate the body, which has lost a lot of water during sleep. This helps the body flush out the toxins that have accumulated overnight. Wake up the body by stretching and then choose yoga exercises that have a beneficial effect on the functioning of the internal organs and on our strength and confidence.

Indian yoga master Pratheep Barnabas suggests exercises or yoga poses named the warrior, downward-facing dog, child and candle.

Shallow breathing originates from the upper part of the chest, while in a relaxed state we breathe deeply from the abdominal diaphragm.

Downward-facing dog

represents a position that allows deep relaxation, especially of the back, lumbosacral region and shoulders.

Child

The position allows for deep relaxation, especially of the back, lumbosacral region and shoulders. It turns our attention inward, our mind calms down.

Candle

The position improves blood circulation and relieves and relaxes the legs and internal organs, relaxes the airways and stimulates hormonal balance, brings new energy, confidence and strength. Because it stimulates blood circulation, it has a beneficial effect on eliminating headaches and migraines.

An evening to breathe

After a full day's work, take time before going to bed for an evening ritual with a simple breathing technique. Modern man breathes too shallowly, so the organs do not get the necessary oxygen they need to function at their best. Shallow breathing originates from the upper part of the chest, while in a relaxed state we breathe deeply from the abdominal diaphragm. Take time for a breathing exercise!

Breathe in and breathe out.

Sit down and straighten up. Then take a few deep breaths. Close the right nostril with the right thumb. Breathe in slowly and deeply through the left nostril. Then close the left nostril with the little finger of the right hand, remove the thumb from the right nostril and exhale. Take the next breath through the left nostril. Follow the dynamics of alternating closing and opening of the nostrils, which should coincide with inhalations and exhalations.

"The basis of good mental and physical well-being is the understanding that each of us carries a responsibility for their own well-being. We can only be healthy if we are in harmony with ourselves. This harmony consists of several layers of self-care. Make sure you exercise, eat healthy, and have rituals to help you manage stress.”

The thermal water has a temperature of up to 63°C at the source! Its springs were discovered at the confluence of the Sava and Krka more than 220 years ago. Even then, the locals realised that the water from the Čatež springs has a beneficial effect on body and mind. Dwarf Čatež, who now greets guests at the entrance to the winter Thermal Riviera, is said to have watched how the good waters came to the surface from the rocks above the River Sava.

Fun for the children, relaxing for the parents

A spa vacation is an excellent choice for families with smaller or older children or for grandparents, aunts and uncles who use the holiday to bond with younger family members. Children are already impressed by the water fun and slides, and their guardians by the opportunities for the child to spend part of the day with excellent entertainers.

In the company of friendly mascots and entertainers

Fun hours turn splash pools and swimming pools into venues for unforgettable children's experiences. Creative workshops, morning exercises for the youngest and various board games ensure that children are not bored even on dry land. Most Slovenian spas offer family holidays with entertainment. Children are greeted by a playful lion, a bear, a stork, a kingfisher and other mascots in Slovenian natural health resorts and spas. Friendly characters, often connected to the stories of the local environment, hang out with experienced entertainers who ensure safe and interesting children's adventures.

For new family adventures

In some spas, special attention is paid to family-friendly accommodation. In addition to hotels, you can choose from apartments or campsites. In some places, you can opt for childcare. You can find playgrounds and playrooms almost everywhere, and in many places also special fairy-tale scenes, places for a cinema, popular among teenagers. Some wellness centres and saunas are also adapted for families.

"The mischievous dwarf Čatež provides laughter and special adventures here. He takes the children to a real pirate ship and douses them with a huge bucket of water on Pirate Island. He cheers them on as they go down the thermal formula, playfully surfing the waves, or dozing off on the giant rings of the lazy river. He invites people to competitions in the Olympic-sized swimming pool and does many other things that amuse the little and the young as well as the old and a little older."

“The best thing to see is when the whole family enters through the doors of our Family Wellness. The older child runs to the slide, while the father and the younger child go on the climbing wall with waterfalls and climbing nets. The mother retreats to the nursing room with the baby, and when she returns, she joins grandma in the water massage area. Later, the children go to the playroom, where the entertainment team are waiting for them, while mum and dad help the youngest make little sand castles on the toddler beach."

Diversity of healthy eating

A dish made by one chef may taste completely different to a dish made by another chef, even though they both used the same recipe. It's the same with advice: the effect of the same advice can be different for two individuals, even though both have followed it. That is why it is important to take the time for a truly in-depth personal approach when giving nutritional advice.

In our healthy weight loss and detoxification programmes, a whole team of experts, consisting of doctors, physiotherapists and experienced therapists, sports professors and kinesiologists, educated nutritionists and chefs with many years of experience, is committed to personal and comprehensive treatment. Because we really pay attention to the guest, because we listen and also hear, because we are available for additional explanations and measurements, in the event that an individual cannot do something, we simply adjust the original programme accordingly. We talk, cooperate, motivate. This is our winning combination.

Personal is effective

In my nutritional consulting work, I notice that people today have a lot of information on and experience with individual fast diets. I haven't even heard of some of them myself! The problem is that they don't know how to eat themselves. When they come to us, they want a hands-on experience that works. And after one week, they already see the first real results: better well-being, less bloating, more energy, fewer headaches, better sleep, regulation of blood sugar with diabetics, and controlled

blood pressure in patients with hypertension. I am especially pleased with guests who return to us for a vacation a year after nutritional counselling in our spa and after acquiring good habits, and I share their pleasure about their lower body weight, smaller size, smaller amount of visceral fat, better hydration, greater muscle mass, better fitness and flexibility. What impresses me the most is the satisfaction they give off! When someone comes back to us healthier and in better condition, it really fills me with pride.

The diet is top-notch

At the spa, we take care of health, well-being and nutrition, which – in addition to movement, relaxation and pleasant socialising – is one of the fundamental threads from which we weave the anchor rope for a satisfied and full life. That is why we pay a lot of attention at the spa to food, dishes, meals and flavours. We take into account the inspiration of local tradition and, at the same time, knowledge and innovation, which transform traditional approaches into more modern dishes, more suitable for today’s tastes. Nutrition experts prepare various diet menus, but always with the inclusion of first-

class ingredients: local, fresh, seasonal foods with the shortest possible supply chain.

Most of the fruits and vegetables that come to our guests' plates come from verified local growers. A crucial part of the food is grown organically, right in our spa garden. The kitchens of two of our hotels are almost self-sufficient with vegetables in the summertime. Vegetables that grow to edible maturity and which do not require longer transport, are richer in nutrients and antioxidants, taste better, and are, above all, always fresh. When guests ask why our vegetables are somehow different, more aromatic, we take them to the garden. A view up close tells them everything.

Relieve your organism

When we consume too many high-calorie and unhealthy foods and drinks for a long time, it is time to take the pressure off your organism. Reduce the amount of food for at least a few days, and give up or at least limit certain foods.

A three-day weight loss programme can also be a prelude

To begin with, stop drinking coffee and alcoholic beverages. Do not smoke. Ensure increased fluid intake. Consume two to three litres of water and unsweetened tea each relief day.

In the three to five days before fasting, get used to non-solid food. Do not consume meat, meat products and fish. The positive effects of the thermal water in Dolenjske Toplice have been known for centuries. Two of the three thermal springs are located directly below the indoor pools – the Prince's and the cave bath. Water comes from a depth of almost a thousand metres. It is isoacratothermic (has the temperature of the human body) and is slightly mineralised. It contains the most calcium, magnesium and hydrocarbons.

Because the world needs healthy and happy people

The foundation of happiness has always been health and well-being. That is why there was already one of the most wonderful spas in Europe next to the springs of healing water in Dolenjske Toplice centuries ago. In addition to various health, preventive and wellness programmes and water fun, this spa with a distinguished tradition, relaxation and satisfaction now also offers mindfulness experiences.

Pampering and relaxation

Learn mindfulness

In the Vitarium Spa & Beauty wellness centre, we combine care for vitality with several different mindfulness programmes. Individual and group programmes make it easier to focus, calm down and restore your energy. This is also restored by massages, which can be combined into a comprehensive programme of care, baths and saunas. Special features include a Japanese sweat bath and an open-air Finnish sauna with a terrace for nudists. The centre also operates an outpatient clinic for non-invasive aesthetic procedures.

Water activities and entertainment

Peace on one side, adrenaline on the other

Quiet corners by the water promise a lot of rest, but Balnea FUN, away from the main pool, combines water slides for adrenaline seekers, the thrill of a pirate ship for the youngest, a climbing wall in the pool and other attractions.

Health and preventive treatment

Help your locomotor system

The health centre is concerned with the treatment and rehabilitation of diseases and conditions after locomotor operations, rheumatic diseases and conditions after certain malignant operations. Specialist clinics for curative and preventive examinations are also available. Combine rest with preventive examinations and healthy life programmes (also suitable for diabetics).

“Give yourself permission to just be, even when you're not achieving great goals. Every day of the year we find the right form of movement for ourselves: the winter season offers skiing and other snow sports, while the summer season impresses with water and air activities as well as on uneven grounds. In one of the most water-rich countries in Europe, natural swimming pools with water sports centres wait for us to enjoy some pleasant exercise, wild rapids for adrenaline-fuelled water experiences, calmer rivers and lakes for boating and supping, the sea for diving, sailing, and kiting experiences.

The attraction of heaven and earth

Some people choose Slovenia for paragliding and hang-gliding, as well as zip lines for adrenalinepumping descents. Many adventure parks also offer a lot of fun. In the land of specialties, you can also test your physical fitness by cycling or boating through abandoned mine tunnels or by guided exploration of Karst caves. Most nature lovers come to Slovenia for hiking and cycling. They are attracted by as many as 10,000 kilometres of marked hiking trails and at least 5,000 kilometres of themed hiking trails, suitable for all fitness levels.
