STATEMENT INTENT of

the theme i have chosen to look at for my a2 photography project is flaws and perfection. i have chosen this theme as i believe that there is a variety of different directions that i can take in exploring a range of ideas. i am interested in exploring the contrasts between flaws and perfection. i am also interested to explore and research what some people may consider to be perfection. i intend in participating in a variety of different assignments to help depthen my knowledge into the theme. i intend in conducting alot of artist research as i would like to gain a further understanding into other people’s perception of flaws and perection. i’m intrigued to find out what people conside to be a flaw or a flawed perfection perhaps. i would like to focus on artists such as arron siskind (for his use of textured photographs/ flaw), gillian wearing (for her use of freedom of speech within the general public/ flawed perfection), daniel hewitt (for his beautiful perfected arcihtectural photographs/ perfection) and steven gill (for his use of scanned images to create stunning manipulated photographs/ flawed perfection. and many more.. my aim for my final piece is to produce a series of photographs portraying the juxtapositions between flaws and perfections using a variety of different manual and digital techniques.

FLAWS VS. Pstephen E R F Egill C T Iinspired ON

shoot

i have decided to conduct a photoshoot in which i will explore the general theme of flaws and perfection using inspiration from my mindmap and artist’s research. i will be using inspiration from the photographer stephen gill as i find his work very abstract and inspiring. i also think it’s a nice and unique way of representing the theme of flaws and perfection. i intend on using inspiration from his series entitled “talking to ants” and his series of editorial photographic scans in which he scans objects (usually flowers) over the top of magazine photographs of models. it works really well in my opinion, the final composition is truley stunning and represents the theme of flaws and perfections perfectly. for my interpretation of his photographs i decided to go to nottinghill in london as i thought the surroundings would produce a sense of perfection due to the beautiful coloured houses and vintage look. i decided to scan an empty packet of crisps over one of the building photographs to distort the perception of the area being perfection. i added a flaw to the perfection. this worked really well in my opinion, i created the technique using photoshop where i removed the scanned background and overlaid it onto my original image. for my other scanned object images, i used a more abstract idea and composition. i decided to place a variety of converse shoes over one of my photographs, this created a very surreal ambience. which in peoples perception could potentially be a flaw. in another one of my photographs i scanned a vintage watch over the image, i really like this photograph as the object is associated with the original landscape photograph.(nottinghill being a very vintage and rustic city). this is very similar in the work of stephen gill as we all know. he takes objects out of their natural enviornment and adds emphasis to them. which is what i have done here. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs i think they represent the theme of flaws and perfection very well.

STEVEN GILL EDITORIAL MAGAZINE INTERPRETATION

i’ve decided to use inspiration from stephen gill’s photographs in which he scans flowers over magazine photographs. i really like this technique i think it works really well in my opinion and is a nice way of representing the theme of flaws and perfection. i created these photographs ising a scanner , magazine photographs and flowers.

ARTIST RESEARCH

JIRO YOSHIHARA

jiro yoshihara (born 1905)is a japanese painter. yoshihara didn’t recieve any formal art education throughout his entire life. however in the early twenties he joined the nika-kai who are a group of painters. during the 1920’s and 30’s yoshihara said his work was influenced heavily by artists such as giorgio de chirico and wassily kandinsky. his work has been held in many diferent exhibitions over the years. overall i find his

work very abstract and unique. i also think his work is a good way of representing the theme of flaws and perfections as he is subtley creating flawed perfections with his artistic dripping shapes. based on the work created by him which i have researched i have decided to create my own interpretation. i intend on using ink instead of paint as i think this will drip and run more efficiently. my aim is to interpret his work to be most accurate.

rita bernstein

rita bernstein is an alternative photographer. the photographs presented on this spread were taken in the early 1990’s and are part of her series entitled ‘past present’. within her work rita has explored the sorrows as well as the sweetness of family life and the general ambivalence that shadows intimate relationships. throughout her life, watching her own children grow up; she was reminded with the conflicts and restlessness that pervaded her own youth. her series of photographs which include dolls particularly interest me as they show the dolls in an unusual and unique way. they have been presented in a less traditional way and this is somthing i find admirable. generally dolls are supposed to be children’s toys therefore they are most likely to look happy and be associated with fun and upbeat things, whereas these dolls look more sinister and sad. the juxtapositions being produced are truly astonishing. what interests me most about the series is that the photographs have been altered to black and white. i think this definetly adds emphasis to the textures within the photograph.it also emphasis the sinister-ness and darkness of the photographs due to the dull and mundane colours. i really like the highlights which have been produced, you can see them very evidently. in my interpretation i intend on including a similaer take on her photographs accept i will make it alot less frightening. i intend on mimicing the sinister ambience though as i think it works well. her photographs represent the theme of flaws and perfection because they are in complete contrast with their original stereotype. overall i find her work very unique and interesting.

barbara kruger therefore you will notice overall i really like her this underlaying theme within work and find it very insome pieces within her work. spiring. i love the way that kruger takes images out of their original context from she also combines tactics magazines and sets them as like appropriation with her the background against which characteristic wit and direct she emblazons confrontationcommentary in order to commu- al phrases. i really like her nicate with the viewer and en- use of clearly legible font courage the interrogation of to her bright and contrasting contemporary circumstances. palette of red and black. each element of the final artwork barbara’s use of images and is crucial to its effectivetext facilitates a direct com- ness as both an artistic exmunication with the viewer. i pression and a protest against think this is really powerful facets of postmodern life. in kruger is associated with as she brings attention to my interpretation i intend on not only conceptual art but important, strong and mean- focusing on flaws & perfecalso postmodern feminist art. ingful messages and issues. tions as my subject matter. barbara kruger is an american conceptual artist born in new jersey in 1945. much of her work consists of black and white photographs which are overlaid with declarative captions or quotes. the phrases tend to include pronouns such as “you”, “your”, “we” and “they”. kruger’s work tends to addres cultural constructions of power, identity and sexuality. although some of her work also maintains a firm basis in social, cultural, and political critique.

“direct address work, regardless

been a consistent tactic in my the medium that i’m working in.”

Jean Michel Basquiat

jean-michael basquiat(1960-1988) was an american artist, musician and producer. his work follows the neo-expressionist and primitivist movement. basquait’s art focused on “suffestive dichotomies” such as wealth vs. povetry, integration vs. segregation and inner vs. outer experience.his work consitsts of poetry, drawing, painting, married text and image, abstraction, figuration and finally historical information mixed with contemporary critique. basquiat’s key technique within his work was to use social commentary as a “spring board to deeper truths about the individual”. he also found attacks on power structures and systems of racism a comportable theme to explore within his work. i find his poetics acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. fred hoffman hypothesizes that underlying basquiat’s sense of himself as an artist was his “innate capacity to function as something like an oracle, distilling his perceptions of the outside world down to their essence and, in turn, projecting them outward through his creative acts.” i particularly like baisquait’s style of work due to the raw, racial and poetic sloppy-ness it is. his final composition isn’t a pretty picture, nor a balanced composition - he presents the audience with an almost reversible set of emotions. for that very reason i believe that his work is an ideal example of flaws and perfection. in the early 1980’s basquiat and the reknowned artist andy warhole created a series of collaborative paintings. like warhol, jean-michel basquiat constructed a persona that he presented to the public that was contradictory to who he truly was. i really like the series i find it very inspiring.

maria aparicIo

maria aparicio is chilean mixed media artist who hand stitches over images which are by various photographers to create beautiful hybrid composition pieces. aparicio works closely with the existing structure of the photographs, overlaying natural forms with geometric shapes and injecting bursts of colour into monochromatic backgrounds. her intricate sewn-on patterns draw attention to non-existing previously undetectable relationships between the subjects in an interesting and unexpected way. personally i find her style and technique astonishing. i really like the way she is representing perfection. you can tell how much care and detail she puts into her pieces which also emphasises the perfectionism of her photographs.

aaron siskind

aaron siskind (1903–1991) is an american photographer oh whom is considered to be closely involved with, if not part of the abstract expressionist movement. siskind’s work focuses on the details of nature and architecture. his work has been described as crossing the line between photography and painting. i really like the way that siskind emphasises textures within his work. the use of black and white really makes them stand out and attract the audience’s attention. in my interpretation i intend on including similar pieces of work. i would like to focus on the decay of everyday objects. i intend on including black and white photographs as i like the contrasts which are produced.

i really like his series of photographs entitled ‘pleasures and terrors of levitation’. the series consists of figures of whom are suspended against a blank background, devoid of context; it’s unclear whether they are falling or floating.

daniel hewitt

daniel hewitt

daniel hewitt is an independant and architectural photographer. his current work is divided into personal and commercial projects. his personal projects explore philosophical questions in architecture and the built environment. his commercial projects so far include documenting major buildings and construction sites in central london, including places such as the tate modern, bloomberg square and crossrail. within his commercial projects hewitt states: “i endeavour to understand the conceptual basis for the design, and to depict this with a sensitivity for spatial qualities, materials, structure, how the building is used, and how it integrates into a broader geographical context. i

his photographs represent the theme of flaws and perfection in a variety of different ways, but primarily because he includes a contrast of both perfected arcitecture, along side not so perfect (flawed) perfection perceptions of achetecture.

RANDY SCOTT SLAVIN

RANDY SCOTT SLAVIN

randy scott slavin is an award-winning director and surrealist photographer based in new york city. he creates a series of 360 degree panoramic landscape photographs. he creates spherical panoramic photographs of various landscapes and cityscapes. he makes the surreal images by shooting hundreds of photographs of a scene and then stiches them together into a sterographic projection. he calls the work ‘alternate perspectives’. overall i find his work truely inspiring. i think it is very clever how he distorts standard photographs and turns them into a flawed perfection. i really like how his photographs represent the theme of flaws and perfection. in my interpretation i intend on creating polar cooridinate’s tool which is under similar effect. i also intend on editing where i will enhance the vibrance of my artist. i think this will really enhance

his technique within photoshop, using the distort in filters as this will create a my manipulated photograph in camera raw, photographs, similar to the work of the the representation of my interpretation.

following moshino x jermery scott’s spring summer collection i am very intrigued to find out what other peoples perceptions are of perfection. is what they’re presenting to the world perfection? the idea that barbie is seen as one of the most perfect girls in the world. is this true? the series consists of consistent use of tall, slim models with peroxide blonde hair. the constant glimmer of pink and pastel tones. does all of this represent perfection? i think perfection can be represented in a variety of different ways. and this so happens to be one of them.

gillian wearing

gillian wearing is an english conceptual artist. personally i really like her series entitled ‘signs that say what you want them to say and not signs that say what someone else wants you to say’. the series includes a series of photographs using a variety of different members of the public expressing themselves with hand made signs. theres a particular photograph which stands out to me and brings across a strong and interesting message. i have placed the photograph above this text on the right hand side. as you can see it’s a policeman holding up a sign which reads “help”. this is very contrasting as you wouldnt expect an authorative figure to be expressing themselves or exposing themselves in such a way. this is very similar to the gentleman on the opposing page. in my opinion this photograph is very controversial as again there is a person who is exposing themselves with no fear of judgement. i think the whole series is very powerful and definitely represents the theme of flaws and perfection well. the photographs represent the theme of flaws as they bring attention to the flaws in people’s everyday lives. the photographs also, in my opinion represent perfection as i find it absolutely beautiful how people are reinforcing freedom of speech. they’re saying what they want and i think this is very special, as typically in our society nobody dares to express how they’re feeling.

STEPHEN GILL

stephen gill (1971) is a british experimental photographer and artist. he is known for his photographs in east london and his attention to detail of objects in their natural habitat.i really like his style of work in the series entitled ‘talking to ants’ and ‘outside in’. he brings emphasis to the objects that you wouldn’t normally notice. he creates a sense of superimposed reality within his photographs which i find very admirable. the message he is conveying is so amazing and dramatic. his title ‘outside in’ is relatable to his work as he is genienly bring emphasis to the outside objects that normally people wouldn’t usually notcie. i like the scanning technique.i think this is a really nice technique to use to represent the theme of flaws and perfections as by making his flaws, the pure beauty of them turns them into a flawed perfetion. i really like his series entitled spring flowers i think it represents the theme of flaws and perfection in a nice and unique way. in this series stephen uses editorial magazine pages and scans flowers over the top of the photographs. this works really well in my opinion. in my interpretation i intend on mimicing his style as i think it works really well.

filip meutermans

aged

filip meutermans is an independent photographer from belgium. i really like his work as its varied. he doesn’t tend to take photographs of a specific subject or topic, if you look on his website his photographs are varied and don’t make any links to one another. although a few of them do. for example i really like his photographs in which he focuses on the age differences between the young and the old. he alters the photographs in black and white and i think this is really effective in my opinion as it highlights the youth within the young and also highlights the aged faces within the elderly. i really like the contrast and juxtapositions which have been created within his work here. i think his photographs are a really nice way of representing the theme of flaws and perfection.

lucas simoes

lucas simoes is a brazillian artist based in sao palo. i really like his series of photographs entitled ausencia. he also has a variety of different series’ in which he has used the same principle and manual technique of burning photographs. i think this technique is spectacular, it’s a really nice way of representing the theme of flaws and perfection. the whole perfection of the burnt out faces being a flaw, however due to the perfectionism and general beauty of of the manual technique and how they’ve formed it turns them into a flawed perfection. after undertaking research on the artists i found a particular quote on his website which i found quite admirable. “to burn pictures, a way of physically erasing a memory by burning it, so with time, the image that is burnt will dissapear from your memory.” i find this quote really interesting as he’s justifying his design and the practice of it.

irving penn

irving penn (born 1917) is an american photographer who is most known for his fashion photography and still life photographs. penn’s career included work at vogue magazine and independent advertising work for clients. his work has been exhibited internationally and continues to inform the art of photography. i particularly like his still life photographs of rotting and decaying fruit. i think this is a really nice way of representing the theme of flaws. i also find his still life photographs of dead flowers admirable. they are the perfect representation of flawed perfections. his photographs of various models, including lisa fovergroves is the perfect representation of perfection. overall i think his work represents the theme well, including contrasts across the broad theme.

john stezaker (1949) is an english conceptual artist. his work is surreal in tone and is often made using collage and postage prints. i really like his work in my opinion as its abstract. i really like the way that he creates contrast by placing coloured prints over the top of greyscale photographic backgrounds. stezaker uses classic movie stills, vintage postcards and book illustrations to make collaged compositions to give the original image a new meaning. he adjusts photographs exploring with inverting and slicing seperate parts of them and pieceing them together to create a unique new work of art. he explores the subversive force of found images.

john stezaker

stezaker’s famous mask series is a series consisting of obscure and distorted photographs of the profiles of glamourous sitters with caves or even waterfalls for making images of eerie beauty.

vasilisa forbes

vasilisa forbes is a mixed media artist and photographer working in london. inspired by contemporary media, her work explores popular culture and the conditions of living in a commercial system. i really like forbes’ series entitled “you were here, we all were. i find it really abstract and unique. i like how she has used the rectangle and line tool within photoshop to produce a series of shapes over the top of her images. this is a really effective technique in my opinion as it creates a sense of enigma. it makes the audience question who is behind this and why has the artist decided to do this to them. her photographs are a really nice way of representing the theme of flaws and perfection. i also find the contrasts which have been produced with the black and white backgrounds and bright bold coloured shapes admirable.

ARTIST INTERPRETATIONS

RITA BERNSTEIN

artist interpretation

here is my interpretation of rita bernstein’s work. as you can see my photographs have an even more sinister take on her original work. however the doll has been represented in a similar, unsually way ; likewise to rita’s which are in complete contrast with what children think of dolls. i took these photographs using a manual setting on the camera, where i adjusted the focus manually. this worked really well in my opinion as i got to get a more accurate point of focus on the objects i wanted to be emphasised most. i took the photographs infront of a black background set up as i wanted to remove any background distractions - i wanted full attention to be on the doll and jars itself. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs, i definitely think they represent the theme well and link to the artists original work. i edited the photographs in camera raw, where i increased the clarify levels and decreased the brightness. i did this as i wanted the add emphasis to the objects and make them stand out. i altered one of my photographs to black and white as i wanted to explore the contrast i could produce.

jiiro yoshihara

artist interpretation

here is my interpretation of artist jiro yoshihara’s circular ink photographs. i have presented a series of paint and ink on paper photographs as it links well with his work, as i have used his style. i decided to use ink in my interpretation aswell as paint as i thought it would drip and run more efficiently and produce an interesting outcome; which it did. as you can see i have taken a series of progressive shots,i decided to do this as i wanted to see the change in the photograph as i gradually kept distorting it with more ink. for the photograph on the left i edited it using photoshop, where i created a khalidescope type effect. this worked really well in my opinion and im happy with the final outcome of all my interpretation photographs.

here is my interpretation of aaron siskind’s work. after researching into artist aaron siskind it was made apparent that his working style focused primarily on textures and decay of objects. in my opinion i think this is a great starting point for representing the theme of flaws and perfection. i think the decayed objects within my photographs have a certain beauty and perfection about them. i edited my photographs using camera raw which is within photoshop. i decided to alter the photographs to black and white, similar to aaron siskind’s original work. i wanted to keep a consistency between his and my work. i also think altering photographs to black

and white emphasises textures and contrasts. i am very pleased with how i have managed to emphasise the decaying objects within my compositions. i intend on participating a re-shoot bAsed on this photo shoot as i would like to explore erosion and decay within a variety of different objects and potentially architecture. i would also like to experiment using inverted filters on photoshop as i believe using an inverted filter can really bring attention to different textures. i think it will be interesting to see how my reshoot photographs pan out. i intend on visting a range of different locations. as in this photoshoot i only stuck to one and got similar results.

for this interpretation i have presented a series of photographs in the style of photographer phillip meutermans. overall i am very happy with the final products i have produced. i really like the contrasts i have produced between the subjects. i have altered my photographs using camera raw which is within photoshop. i decided to edit my photographs to a black and white filter as i wanted to mimic the original style of the photographers work, however i also believe that using this filter has allowed the contrasts to be emphasised. i really like how highlights have been produced on the baby’s face, it resembles youth and purity. the photographs of the elderly man are really powerfull in my opinion. the thing that i really respect and admire about the photographs is that i didn’t have to tell him what to do, he naturally positioned himself in the positions which are vieweable here, all i did was capture his emotions. this is really effective in my opinion as you can tell that his emotions aren’t fake, they’re very natural and create a sympathetic response within the viewers; which is in contrast with the baby photographs. i also really like how i have used the clarify levels and increased them to enhance the wrinkles and decay seen within the elderly figure. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs and i wouldn’t participate in any reshoots or make any adjustments as i believe they represent the theme well and link well to the original photographer and his style.

lucas simoes

artist interpretation

for this interpretation i have created a series of progressive burn photographs. i took the original photograph in london, near the tate modern art gallery. i really like the vintage aspect of the photograph. i decided it would be an ideal photograph to do my lucas simoes interpretation on as the whole burn technique works really well with the car itself. the burn on the car’s body work looks very realistic in my opinion, it’s as if the car’s body work is rusting and becoming damaged. due to the strong association between the two i think it is a nice way of representing flaws and perfection. the burn itself is a flaw but due to the beauty of the final composition it becomes a flawed perfection. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs, i really like that i have portrayed the gradual distruction of photographs i think it works really well and is very effective. i decided to leave the series of photographs unedited as i wanted to highlight the raw-ness of them. the photograph on the opposing page was editing using camera raw. i decided to edit this photograph as it is one of my favourites from the shoot. i really like how the burn came out in this photograph. i decided to decrease the brightness of the photograph as i wanted to maintain a clear focus on the burn and car itself therefore adding and increasing darkness and dark tones to the background should highlight the centre parts of the image. i also increased the clarify levels as i wanted to emphasise the textures within the photograph. overall i am very pleased with the outcome of my shoot and editing process i think my photographs represent the theme and photographers work well.

randy scott slavin

artist interpretation

here are the original photographs which i had taken for my interpretation shoot. as you can see from the edited versions i have manipulated the photographs and made them appear to be more surreal and abstract.

artist interpretation

randy scott slavin

here are a series of photographs in which i have created as an interpretation of photographer randy scott slavin. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs. i created the technique, which is similar to his but not made in the same way; using photoshop. whereas within his original work he takes hundreds of photographs and stiches them together digitally into a 360 degree panorama. to create my photographs i used the polar coordinates tool which is under distort in the filters tab. i alternated between the two style options available within the polar coordinates setting. i am very happy with the final compositions which i have produced. i understand that they were made in a completely different way to him, however they still link to his work as i have produced a surreal landscape; similar to the artist. i edited my photographs using camera raw where i increased the vibrance levels to make the photographs appear more surreal and abstract with bright colour tones.

irving penn

artist interpretation

for this interpretation i have used inspiration from photographer irving penn and his decaying flower photo shoot.overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs and the way they represent the theme of flaws and perfection. my photographs represent the theme of flaws by the decaying and deadness of the flowers, the perfection within them is the pure beauty of the photographs. the flowers are decaying and dead but still appear very much alive due to their bright hues and colourings.i edited my photographs using camera raw where i increased the brightness levels and highlights as i wanted to maintain a sustainable and solid white background, rather than a contrasted yellow hue. this also added emphasis and clarity to the bright fusion of colours within the flowers. i increased the clarify levels as i wanted to sharpen the textures within the decaying flowers. this worked really well and enhanced the photographs alot. i really like the general contrast which has been produced within the brightness and decay of the flowers, i find it very powerful.

barbara kruger

artist interpretation

here is my interpretation of barbara kruger’s work. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs. i think they resemble her work well and the theme. to create my photographs i edited them using camera raw, where i decreased the brightness tones as i wanted to add emphasis to the central parts of the image. i increased the vibrance tones as i wanted to glamourise the barbie’s and make them appear ‘in the spotlight’ if-you-were. i then opened up the photographs on photoshop where i added in the text overlays. this worked really well in my opinion as i managed to research what font the artist originally uses within her work and i copied that to make my interpretation more consistent with her own. i really like how i have used distorted dolls as part of the flawed perfection as it really works and reinforces the theme. the text phrases also relate to the theme as they’re associated with flaws and question what is classified as ‘real’ beauty. overall i am very pleased with my interpretation photographs. for the two black and white images i used a standard b&w filter, however i also used an inverted filter over the top. this worked really well in my opinion.

john stezaker

artist interpretation

here is my interpretation of john stezaker’s work. i created these photographs using photoshop in which i used two photographs that were associated with one another. if you look at the photograph on the right i have used a photograph of a male figure and covered his face with a photograph of the location in which he is in. this works really well in my opinion and represents the theme of flaws very well due to the distortion. for the photograph underneath that one i have used a photograph of an elderly woman, i have covered her face with a rock which is in line with her facial structre. this is very similar to the work of john stezaker. i am very pleased with my interpretation of his style of work. for the blown up image on the opposite page i have combined the two smaller photograph’s techniques: using the location in which the subject is in, and also aligning photographs with the main photo. the final composition works really well in my opinion. i edited all of my photographs using camera raw, where i altered the background photographs to black and white in style of the original photographer’s work.

gillian wearing

artist interpretation

here is my interpretation of gillian wearing’s work. i have produced a series of photographs which have been taken in the style of her work. i have decided to leave the faces of the subjects within my photographs unknown as i believe this is effective amongst the viewers as it creates a sense of enigma. it makes the audience question who is coming up with such complaints and why the photographer has decided to do this. within my photographs i have maintained a substancial amount of miseen-scene and props within them. i have done this as it is beneficial for the viewer to understand and recognise who the person is or what type of person they are. due to this i have added alot of emphasis onto these certain props used within the frame as i wanted to keep them in focus. i decided to edit some of my photographs to black and white as i wanted to add contrast. this worked really well in my opinion as it highlights the pieces of paper and makes them the main focal point for the viewer. i really like how i have managed to associate the phrases on the paper to the scenes within them, i think this is really effective and is a brilliant way of representing flaws and perfection. my series of photographs are focusing more on flaws rather than perfection.

vasilisa forbes

artist interpretation

here is my interpretation of vasilisa forbes work. i am very pleased with the final outcome of my work. i created the lines and shapes within photoshop using a variety of the shape tools. overall i think my work relates very well to hers due to the similarities within colour tones and choice of location. i really like how the ines associate and bring together different parts of the photograph. i also admire how the colour blocks distort parts of the photograph. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my interpretation photographs.

for this photoshoot i have produced a series of re-shoot photographs in the style of photographer aaron siskind. i have decided to conduct a re-shoot of my interpretation shoot as i felt like i needed to explore the theme more. for this shoot i visited a range of different locations, whereas in my first interpretation i had only photographed one location. i like the fact that i have experimented using different locations as it adds more variety into my work. my locations vary from virginia waters, to central london and portugal. i edited my photographs using camera raw. i decided to alter the majority of my photographs to black and white as i wanted to maintain a consistent interpretation of the photographers work. the majority of his work is black and white therefore i felt the need to make mine too. i also altered the to a greyscale filter as i believe it creates contrast, contrasts are seen more evidently and i really admire this. i think it also brings attention to the textures within the photograph. to enhance this aswell i used the clarify tool. i really like how my photographs represent the theme of flaws due to the decay which can be seen very clearly. i believe i have explored and illustrated decay very thoroughly throughout this photo shoot. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photo shoot.

artist interpretation - reshoots

aaron siskind - inverted filter edits

here is a series of edited photographs from my arron siskind interpretation. i have decided to alter my original photographs within photoshop as i wanted to experiment with an inverted filter. i wanted to explore with an inverted filter as i believe that it can emphasize and highlight textures within photographs. i have also used a change in blending modes on every photograph with a different one to one another. i think this works really well as im presenting a variation of inverted filter edits.overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs. im pleased that they represent the theme of flaws well, due to the decay and rust of the objects.

daniel hewitt

artist interpretation - reshoots

here is my re-shoot photoshoot based on the work of photographer daniel hewitt. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs. i decided to conduct a re-shoot of my interpretation shoot as i wanted to explore his style of work further however using a variety of different locations. i find his focus and attention to detail within architecture admirable. my photographs represent the theme of flaws and perfection due to either the perfectionsim within the architecture or the flaws in their surroundings. i wanted to foucs on a variety of different city scapes within my re-shoot as i only used one location within my interpetation. i think having more variety within you’re work is key to achieve positive results. i decided to alter my photographs to black and white as it produces a large amount of contrast and adds emphasis to details within the photograph.on the opposite page you can see there is a kaleidoscope type effect image. i created this effect using photoshop were i duplicated the layers and fliped them to the appropriate position when necessary. this final composition worked really well in my opinion and looks very effective. i believe this digital edit is a great way of representing the theme of flaws and perfection due to the distortions which have been produced. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photo shoot.

artist interpretation - reshoots irving penn B&W / Inverted filter edits

for this series of photographs i have varied between exploring with inverted filters and greyscale filters. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs. i edited them in photoshop, where i used an inverted filter and a variation of changes in blending modes. i think this technique works really well and is very effective. i really like how my photographs represent the theme of flaws and perfection due to the distortion becoming a flawed perfection.

irving penn / original photographs

artist interpretation - reshoots

here is my orginal photographs from my irving penn re-shoot. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photographs. i decided to create a re-shoot based on my interpretation shoot on irving penn as i wanted to explore his style of work further, incorporating models within the work. as you can see i have used a variety of dead flowers and flowers which are very much alive. this contrast in itself is very effective and works really well. the model has produced a series of different facial emotions, this again works as i variable of flaws and perfection. the general scene creates a sense of flaws and perfection due to the natural beauty of the items within the frame (model and bright, beautiful flowers) the facial emotions and use of dead, decaying flowers act as the flaw. so overall i have created a flawed perfection composition. i edited my photographs using camera raw, where i adjusted the clarify tool to enhance the photographs. i also did this as i wanted to add emphasis to the flowers.

irving penn & arron siskind

artist interpretation - reshoots

for this assignment i have created a re-shoot of my original artist interpretation of irving penn and aaron suskind. as you can see by looking at my photographs represented here i have combined the two style of the artists and merged them together into one still life composition. i got inspiration from irving penn for the decaying flowers, i think this looks really effective as it’s a nice way of emphasising flaws. the flowers have a beautiful tendency about them as it apparent that they’re dying but they’re bright and colourful and would assume to be full of life due to this. i took inspiration from aaron suskind and his style of old, decaying and rustic items. i found a vintage pot in my house and i was amazed by the textures of the decaying and aged object. i am very pleased with the final outcome of these photographs. i think the flaws which are clearly shown have a particular beauty about them. i edited my photographs using camera raw which is within photoshop. i used the clarify tool and sharpening tool as i wanted to add as much emphasis to all the flaws and decaying marks on the objects. this worked really well in my opinion. i decreased the brightness tool for the very same reason. i really like the contrasts which have been produced within the composition. for example the brightly coloured flowers against the dull and mundane colouring of the pot.as you can see on the opposite side i have altered of of my photographs to black and white. this is a really good way of emphasising textures and contrasts. to capture these photographs i used a manual setting on the camera and i also experimented with manual focus as i wanted to make sure the focus was kept on specific places which i wanted to be brought attention to. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome.

vasilisa forbes / maria aparicio

artist interpretation - reshoots

here is my re-shoot photograph of vasilisa forbes and maria aparicio. i created this photograph using photoshop. i used the lines tool to create multiple lines on the photograph to link with my photographers researched, vasilisa forbes and maria aparicio. i really like the way i can link different parts of the photograph together using simple lines. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photograph and the way it represents the theme of flaws and perfection. the photograph represents the theme of flaws due to the heavy distortion and the dead flowers within the photograph. the theme perfection is reinforced by the aliveness of the dead flowers and the matchning colour scheme of the lines and the objects within the photograph. the associations created are very strong and powerful.

TECHNIQUES

DIGITAL EDITS MANUAL EDITS

WEAVING PHOTOGRAPHS

manual edits

TECHNIQUES for this manual edit i have created it by manually weaving two photographs together. in my example i have used two of the same photographs as i wanted to make the final composition distorted but not to the point where the original photograph was un-recognizabble. to weave photographs together i have included a drawn diagram to guide you through the process. all you need to do is cut the two photographs, one horizontally and the other vertically, in equal widths. you then alternate between either placing them above or underneath. overall i really like this manual technique, i think it looks really effective and works really well. the photographs i have included on this page are part of my final piece. as you can see i have also added clippings of photographs and mounted them on foamboard, i have done this to add dimension, this worked very effective in my opinion. overall i am very pleased with the final composition.

HAND STICHING

TECHNIQUES

manual edits

THIS TECHNIQUE IS INSPIRED BY TWO OF MY ARTIST RESEARCHED, MARIA APARICIO AND VASILISA FORBES. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE FINAL OUTCOME OF MY COMPOSITIONS, I CREATED THEM USING A NEEDLE AND THREAD. I THINK THIS TECHNIQUE IS A NICE WAY OF LINKING PHOTOGRAPHS TOGETHER AND ASSOCIATING THEM TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PHOTOGRAPH WHICH YOU MAY HAVE NOT ASSOCIATED THEM TO. THE PHOTOGRAPHS I HAVE USED ARE FROM MY FINAL PIECE, ALTHOUGH THE VERY LAST PHOTOGRAPH ON THE OPPOSITE PAGE IS NOT, THAT WAS MY VERY FIRST EXPERIMENT USING THE TECHNIQUE. I HAVE PLACED THAT IMAGE BENEATH THIS TEXT ALSO, SO YOU GET A BETTER PERSEPECTIVE OF IT. I EDITED MY PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE TECHNIQUE IN CAMERA RAW WHERE I INCREASED THE CLARIFY TOOL TO ENHANCE THE PHOTOGRAPHS AND BRING MORE ATTENTION TO THE THREAD LINES.

PAINTING OVER PHOTOGRAPHS

TECHNIQUES

manual edits

for this technique i used inspiration from one of my artists researched, jiro yoshihara and his work used with ink and paint. i decided to use inspiration from his work as i found it very interesting and a nice way of portraying the theme of flaws and perfection. to create the technique i used paint and a paint brush to splatter the paint across my photograph evenly and in a creative way. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photograph. this photograph is part of my final piece. i edited this photograph using camera raw which is within photoshop, where i increased the clarify tool to enhance the image and to keep the viewers focus and attention to the paint edit.

manual edits

MULTIPLE STRIP PANORAMAS

FOR THIS TECHNIQUE I HAVE CREATED A PANORAMA USED OUT OF MULTIPLE STRIPS OF AN IMAGE. TO CREATE THE FINAL COMPOSITION I USED TWO OF THE SAME PHOTOGRAPHS. I THEN CUT THEASE PHOTOGRAPHS VERTICALLY, USING THE SAME WIDTH AND LENGTH. I THEN DECIDED TO PLACE THE TWO PHOTOGRAPH SLICES TOGETHER TO CREATE A DISTORTED PANORAMA IMAGE. THIS WORKED REALLY WELL IN MY OPINION, I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE FINAL OUTCOME OF MY EDITED PHOTOGRAPH.I THINK IT IS A NICE WAY OF REPRESENTING THE THEME OF FLAWS AND PERFECTION. I EDITED MY PHOTOGRAPH ON CAMERA RAW WHERE I INCREASED THE BRIGHTNESS, TO MAKE THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PHOTOGRAPH BLEND MORE EFFICIENTLY.

here is my diagram to illustrate the process of this manual technique. i created the diagram using paint where i simply divided the instructions into three simple steps. the diagram shows how the two singular photograph become one main panorama. the two photographs below were mirrored for effect. the actual final composition is the photograph on the opposite page. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photograph. i have placed the original image, before manual technique below.

digital EDITS

SCANNING OBJECTS

for this technique i have presented a series of scanned photographs of barbie dolls which have been distorted to make them appear a flaw, a flawed perfection. for the blown up image to the left i decided to move the object whilst the scan was taking place and it produced an interesting result. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of this photograph, i think it represents the theme of flaws and perfection exceedingly well. i edited this photograph using camera raw, where i increased the clarify tool to enhance the image and bring attention to the sharpened movement bands, i also decreased the brightness levels as i wanted to add as much attention to the central parts of the photograph as i could. i increased the highlights to reinforce and incorporate this.

for this photograph i used the exact smae technique as on the before page; of moving the object whilst the scan was participating. except in this interpretation i decided to move the object more, and more quickly to produce different results to the first image. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my edit. i edit the photograph using camera raw where i decreased the brightness levels and increased the highlights to add emphasis to the central parts of the photograph.

here is a standard scan of one of the dolls. i think even without the movement technique it is still just as effective to scan an object. i think you can really pick up the details and textures more by using a scanner. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photograph. i think it represents the theme of flaws and perfections well due to the perfection within the doll herself and the rlaws being the distortions made to her. i decided to alter the photograph to black and white as i wanted to add a contrast to the other photographs which i had produced which were in colour. i also think converting photographs to black and white are a great way of bringing emphasis to textures and details.

digital EDITS

PHOTOSHOP TECHNIQUES here is a series of photographs in which i have edited using photoshop. i have used a variety of different photographs from my assignments. for the photograph on the right, a image from my irving penn reshoot photo shoot. i created it using photo shop where i used the filter tab and selected distort and the zig-zag tool. i then chose the right amount i wanted use and the selected apply. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my photograph, i think i have distorted the photograph to a realistic amount, meaning that the final composition doesn’t look over done, or over edited. overall i am very pleased with the photograph and the way it represents the theme of flaws and perfection. for the photograph on the opposite page i created it using photoshop, where i duplicated the orginal photograph and replaced it on the photograph in a different position to where it naturally was placed. i decided to then alternate the blending mode as i wanted to produce a distorted final composition, and i believed that this would create a contrast. with that done, i then decided to use the pixelate / mosaic tool to create mosaic snippit edits on the photograph. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my composition. for the photograph besides the aforementioned one i have digitally edited it by placing a strip of motion blur through the image. this works really well in my opinion and is a nice way of distorting a photograph.

LAYER

digital EDITS

E D I T S

here is a series of layer edits which i created using photoshop. as you can see i have overlaid a photograph on top of a background image, i did this as i wanted to produce a variety of different techniques over the top of them. i have labelled what the techniques were which i had applied, this is to inform and help the viewer understand the process and how to achieve results, similar to mine. my favourite layer edit would have to be the crystalised foreground. i really like this layer edit, i think it works really well and i love the pattern on the flowers which had been produced. overall i am pleased with the outcome of my layer edits and i think they represent the theme well.

COLOUR OVERLAY

digital EDITS

E D I T S

for these digital edits, i decided to focus on the harris shutter effect. i really like this effect as it gives off a three dimensional type effect. it also makes the photographs appear to be more sinister than what they originally may have been percieved to be. to create this effect i used photoshop, where i opened up my original image. i then altered the photograph to black and white as i believe the technique works better using this colour tone. what you then have to do is duplicate the original photograph to create a second layer. for the first original photograph layer (layer 1) you double click on it in the tab and change the channel blending colour so that only the r is ticked. you then do the same for layer 2, accept instead of keeping the r ticket you un tick it and keep the g and b ticked. the next step is to move layer 1 to the left 5 times and then layer 2 to the right 5 times. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my edited photographs. i think they represent flaws well.

PAPER PHOTO - SHOOT TECHNIQUES

CROPPING

FROM MY PAPER PHOTO-SHOOT I HAVE DECIDED TO INCLUDE A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES OUT OF MY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE SHOOT. FOR THIS TECHNIQUE I HAVE FOCUSED ON CROPPING. WHERE I HAVE USED ONE ON MY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE SHOOT, EDITED IT ON CAMERA RAW WHERE I CONVERTED IT TO BLACK AND WHITE TO CREATE CONTRAST AND FOCUS TO DETAIL, LINES AND EDGES. I THEN ZOOMED IN USING PHOTOSHOP AND CROPED AND SAVED THE DIFFERENT PARTS AND PERSPECTIVES OF THE IMAGE WHICH WERE CREATED.

ROTATION FOR THIS TECHNIQUE I HAVE DECIDED TO FOCUS ON ROTATION. TO CREATE THIS TECHNIQUE I CHOSE AND EDITED THE PHOTOGRAPHS I WANTED TO USE, I EDITED THEM USING CAMERA RAW WHERE I MADE THE SAME ADJUSTMENTS WHICH I MADE TO THE PHOTOGRAPHS ON THE OPPOSING PAGE. I THEN OPENED UP MY INDIVIDUAL PHOTOGRAPHS ON PHOTOSHOP AND DUPLICATED THEM AND ROTATED/FLIPED THEM TO THE CORRECT POSITION WHEN NECESSARY. THIS TECHNIQUE WORKS REALLY WELL IN MY OPINION, I THINK IT’S REALLY EFFECTIVE. AND THE FINAL COMPOSITION’S IN MY OPINION ARE A REALLY NICE WAY OF REPRESENTING THE THEME OF FLAWS AND PERFECTION. I PARTICULARLY LIKE THE PHOTOGRAPH ABOVE THIS TEXT, AS IT HAS PRODUCED A KALEIDOSCOPE TYPE EFFECT. ROTATION IS IMPORTANT AS IT CAN PRODUCE REALLY EFFECTIVE AND DISTORTED PHOTOGRAPHS. OVERALL I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE FINAL OUTCOME OF MY DIGITALLY EDITED PHOTOGRAPHS.

PAPER PHOTO - SHOOT TECHNIQUES

REPETITION

FOR THIS TECHNIQUE I HAVE CHOSEN TO FOCUS ON REPETITION. TO CREATE THIS TECHNIQUE ALL I HAVE DONE IS OPEN UP MY EDITED PHOTOGRAPHS AND DUPLICATED THEM TO REPEAT THE PATTERN WHICH HAD ORIGINALLY BEEN PRODUCED TO ENHANCE IT. FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHS ON THIS PAGE I HAVE DONE THAT VERY THING. OVERALL I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE FINAL COMPOSITION, I THINK THE TECHNIQUE WORKS REALLY WELL AND IS A NICE WAY OF PORTRAYING THE THEME OF FLAWS AND PERFECTION DUE TO THE DISTORTIONS AND FINAL LAYOUTS WHICH HAVE BEEN PRODUCED.

FOR THIS TECHNIQUE I HAVE CREATED A SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH HAVE BEEN DISTORTED OR INCORPORATED WITH WORDS AND IMAGERY. FOR THE PHOTOGRAPH ABOVE THIS TEXT YOU CAN SEE THAT I HAVE PLACED THE IMAGE OVER THE TEXT, THIS WORKS REALLY WELL IN MY OPINION AS IT ADDS ATTENTION AND EMPHASIS TO THE CENTRAL IMAGE. FOR THE PHOTOGRAPH BESIDES IT I HAVE PLACED TEXT OVER THE TOP OF THE IMAGE THIS WORKS REALLY WELL IN MY OPINION AS IT ADDS CONTEXT, IT’S A GOOD WAY OF COMMUNICATING WITH THE VIEWER AND GIVING THEM AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE NARRATIVE OF THE PHOTOGRAPH. FOR THE FINAL TECHNIQUE PHOTOGRAPH I CREATED IT BY PLACING PLACEHOLDER TEXT OVER THE TOP OF THE IMAGE AND OVER THE SET FRAME OF THE PHOTOGRAPH. THIS WORKS QUITE WELL IN MY OPINION AS IT HAS A SENSE OF UN-NEATNESS WHICH IS ASSOCIATED WITH MY THEME OF FLAWS AND PERFECTION. I THINK IT IS ALSO A NICE WAY OF OBSCURING THE PHOTOGRAPH. OVERALL I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE FINAL OUTCOME OF MY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THIS SHOOT.

SECTION 3: TECHNIQUES AND PROCESSES WHICH PHOTO SHOOTS HAVE I COMPLETED SO FAR AND HOW DO THEY RELATE TO THE THEME? WHAT CAMERA SETTINGS HAVE I USED IN THE PHOTO SHOOTS AND WHY? WHICH TECHNIQUES AND PROCESSES HAVE I USED TO DEVELOP MY THEME? HOW DID I USE THESE TECHNIQUES TO DEVELOP THE THEME? WHAT REFINEMENTS COULD I APPLY TO THESE TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE THE EFFECT? WHICH TECHNIQUES AND PROCESSES DO I WANT TO TAKE ON FURTHER? i have completed a wide range of different assignments and photoshoots which relate and represent the theme such as statement of intent, photographers research, photographer interpretations, re-shoots, techniques, so far, possible ideas and evaluation. all of these assignments and photo shoots have enabled me to explore the theme thoroughly. i have used a range of different camera settings within my shoots such as manual focus as it enables you to add emphasis to particular parts of the photograph. i have used many techniques within my work such as manual techniques and digital. within my techniques pages i have included manual techniques such as a multiple strip panorama, painting over photographs, hand stitching, weaving and layering photographs on foam board to add dimension. i have also included techniques which i experimented with using paper. i have created a series of digital

SECTION 4: PLANNING FOR THE OUTCOME WHICH IDEAS COULD I TAKE FURTHER TO DEVLOP MY THEME? HOW CAN I MAKE USE OF MY PHOTOGRAPHERS RESEARCH AND TECHNIQUES? WHICH PHOTOSHOOTS DO I NEED TO DEVELOP FURTHER AND WHY? WHAT IDEAS DO I HAVE FOR THE DISPLAY STRATEGY? i intend on producing a series of four photographs for my final piece. i would like to include a variety of manual and digital techniques within my final piece to reinforce the theme. i think techniques are a good way of representing flaws as it enables you to interfere with the original image and distort it in any way you would like. in other words creating a flawed perfection.i will use my photographers research for inspiration of the creation of my techniques, as i believe this will be useful for me. i would like to add more to my re-shoots as i don’t believe i have made it to my best ability, i will improve it by adding more re-shoots and context.i intend on displaying my photographs in frames on a wall as i think frames are a good way of containing photographs and act as a good representation strategy.

SECTION 2: PHOTOGRAPHERS RESEARCH WHICH PHOTOGRAPHERS HAVE I RESEARCHED INTO AND HOW HAVE THEY HELPED DEVELOP MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE THEME? HOW DID I USE THE PHOTOGRAPHERS IDEAS IN MY WORK TO DEVELOP MY IDEAS? WHAT OTHER INFLUENCES HAVE HELPED TO DEVLOP MY IDEAS (MUSIC, LITERATURE, SCIENCE, HISTORY, POLITICS)? i have researched into a wide range and variety of different photographers. the main photographers in which i used inspiration for, for my final piece are: aaron siskind, irving penn, jiro yoshihara and maria aparicio. other artists and photographers which i had researched in the exploration of the theme are: lucas simoes, barbara kruger, john steazaker, rita bernstein, jean michael baisquait, daniel hewitt and many more. all photographers/artists represent the theme in a variety of different ways to one another and that is something that i really find admirable. by conducting my artist research i’ve learnt that i can represent and portray the theme of flaws and perfection in a range of different ways. i used inspiration from the aforementioned artists for my final piece by using their variety of different manual techniques. for example i have included hand stiching in my final piece from maria aparicio, i have included the use of black paint over my photograph from artist jiro yoshihara, i included burning and tearing photographs from photographer aaron siskind. other influences outside my artist research which have influenced and helped develop my ideas is pin interest. i found a photograph of a double exposure print by antonio mora which i took a liking to. i decided to use this technique within my final piece as i believed it was a good way of representing the theme.

techniques such as photoshop techniques and layer techniques. i used these techniques to develop the theme as i believe that some of my techniques could present the theme of flaws due to distortions which were produced. in my opinion i wouldn’t make any refinements to my techniques, i believe that i have made them to my best ability and i am very pleased with the final outcomes and compositions. i would like to take weaving photographs on further in order as inspiration for my final piece, i would also like to take on painting over photographs, mounting on foamboard and scratching over photographs as i believe they will work well in order to represent the theme.

SECTION 1: CHOOSING A THEME WHAT MADE ME DECIDE ON MY CHOSEN THEME? WHAT DID I LEARN FROM THIS RESEARCH ABOUT THE THEME? HOW HAVE I EXPLORED THE THEME? i decided to choose flaws and perfection as my chosen theme for this project as i believed there were a wide variety of different directions in which i could explore the theme. after conducting a wide range of research i have learnt that you can present the theme in a variety of different ways. i found it interesting the way that people can percieve things differently. for example what some people may percieve to be perfection others may percieve it to be a flaw. i explored the theme by conducting a range of different research and interpretation assignments.

POSSIBLE IDEAS

PININTEREST

INSPIRATION

artist: maria aparicio here is a photograph i found after conducting a search in pininterest in my exploration of the theme. aparicio photographic style amazes me, i really like the way she captures the viewers attention with her precise attention to detail and perfectionism. her photographs represent the theme of perfection and that is why i have included her work within my artist research.

artist: aaron siskind arron siskind’s work is truely astonishing. i really like the way his photographs represent the theme of flaws. the ripping and tearing of the objects reinforces the idea of this. i really like the way he has altered the photographs to black and white as this emphasises contrast and the textures within the frame. overall i really like the way he represents flaws.

TECHNIQUES

artist: kwangho shin artist: antonio mora this photograph was done by artist here is a photograph by photograkwangho shin, i find his photograph pher/artist antonio mora. i really portraits very inspiring and impres- like this double exposure photograph, sive. his photographs create a sense i think it represents the theme of of enigma as it makes the audience flaws very well due to the distorquestion why he has covered the sub- tions within the digital edit. i also ject up in such a way; a creative find this technique very impressive way. i think his photographs repreas it adds a surreal effect to the images. i will definietly consider sent both flaws and pefection due to including this technique within my the beautifulness the flaw creates. i would like to experiment with this. final piece.

POSSIBLE IDEA

OF FINAL PIECE #1

for my final piece i intend on including a series of three photographs. i have produced two photographs which i would like to use and make into three completely different photographs. i think this is a nice way of representing the theme of flaws and perfection as i would like to demonstrate how you can manipulate the theme into a variety of different perspectives. the two photographs i will be using are on the opposite page. i created these photographs on photoshop where i used a variety of different digital techniques on photoshop. i intend on creating a range of different manual techniques over the top of them after i have printed them out. manual techniques i would like to consider are: stiching over photographs, painting over the top of photographs, scratching onto photographs, ripping and tearing photographs, weaving photographs and finally mounting and placing on photographs with foamboard to create dimension. for the digital techniques, all i did was create a double exposure on the black and white photograph, i also used a range and change of blending modes on this photograph to make it blend more efficiently. for the photograph on the right i created it again using photoshop, where i used the lines tool to create multiple lines on the photograph to link with my photographers researched, vasilisa forbes and maria aparicio. i will use the information on my so far page to give me inspiration in the process of my final piece.

POSSIBLE IDEA

OF FINAL PIECE #2 for this possible idea i intend on producing two photographs for my final piece. i will use the photographs on the opposite page. the description of the creation process is on the page before this. i will create two weave photographs out of the two photographs on the other page. i think this would work really well, although i feel that i wouldn’t be able to explore the theme as thoroughly as if i used the other idea.

CHOSEN

POSSIBLE IDEA #1

VS. #2

i have decided to choose possible idea #1 as my display strategy for my final piece because there is alot i can do with it, i feel that i would be able to explore the theme more efficiently this way due to the wide range of manual and digital techniques which would have been applied. this would also enable me to add contrast and variety to my work which would be very benificial. i also think having choosing this theme i would be able to represent the theme of flaws and perfection more and in more detail.

FINAL PIECE & EVALUATION

FINAL PIECE & EVALUATION HERE IS MY final piece. i have produced a series of three photographs. i have included a variety of different manual and digital techniques within my final piece, using inspiration from my photographers and artists researched. for my manual techniques i used inspiration from photographers maria aparicio and her hand stitching techniques, scratching over photographs, weaving photographs together, ripping and tearing photographers from aaron siskind’s work, mounting photographs on foam board to create dimension and painting over photographs to represent the work of jiro yoshihara. i have also inserted a fake flower over the top of the photographic flower. this is very effective in my opinion as it adds dimension and a 3d effect. i used inspiration from lucas simoes and his burning of photographs technique. the photograph on the right illustrates this. for the digital techniques i used inspiration from my pininterest artist antonio mora and his style of double exposures. i have also used alterations to the blending modes to make the blend of photographs more efficient. i used the line tool within photoshop to create multiple lines on one of my photographs to link parts of it together. this worked really well in my opinion. overall i am very pleased with the final outcome of my final piece photographs, i think they represent the theme well and link well to it. i have used a silver frame to contain the images and i intend on presenting them like how they are on the table but individually on a wall.

WHAT WERE THE TECHNICAL AND LOGISTICAL DIFFICULTIES THAT YOU FACED? i didn’t face any serious technical and logistical difficulties during this photo shoot. it went very smoothly in my opinion as i took the photo shoot as school so i had all the resources i needed. the only problem i faced was that the first camera i planned to use had broken therefore i needed to swap it to one that did work. this problem wasn’t very time consuming as i could swap it over straight away.
