P R I O R Y
SAINT LOUIS PRIORY SCHOOL IS A CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR YOUNG MEN FOUNDED IN 1956.
A group of St. Louis Catholics asked the Benedictine Abbey of Ampleforth in Yorkshire, England, to form an all-boys, college preparatory school that would be competitive enough to send students to the most selective colleges and universities in the U.S. The group had already acquired parcels of land in then-rural Creve Coeur, Missouri, and raised funds to build and finance the school. Originally admission was for only 30 boys who would be entering the ninth grade. After its first year, the school continued to add one grade each year until the school offered grades 7 through 12. Today, the more than two dozen Benedictine monks of Saint Louis Abbey continue the Order’s centuries-old, global tradition of providing a liberal arts education. Honoring a student’s natural abilities while stretching them physically, academically and spiritually leads to self-discovery and enlightenment and creates a foundation for a lifetime of personal growth. Students who enter Priory in the 7th grade graduate six years later prepared for advanced study and

grounded in the Benedictine principles of love of God and neighbor, and an appreciation for the exchange of ideas. More than 60 years after the school’s founding, its purpose remains consistent with the vision of its founders and has become one of the strongest college preparatory programs in the St. Louis area. The school is a member of the National Catholic Educational Association, the College Board, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, and the Saint Louis Educational Confederation.

THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM PRIORY PROVIDES ONE OF THE STRONGEST COLLEGE PREPARATORY PROGRAMS IN THE ST. LOUIS AREA FOR BOYS IN GRADES 7 THROUGH 12.
Our academic program imparts the intellectual skills and habits of inquiry, study, and reflection that are vital to a

successful future. In the early stages of their Priory experience, students are required to follow a liberal arts course of study involving coursework in nine academic departments. Priory’s curriculum provides the foundation to prepare young men for admission to distinguished colleges and universities, and, perhaps more importantly, it enables them to undertake further studies with success.

As students progress through Priory’s program, their opportunities for variety in course selection increase. Some of our students elect to continue their study of the classical languages, while others choose to participate in our computer science program. Each boy continues to develop his craft in our visual or fine arts electives for a minimum of two years in the High School. By the time they are juniors and seniors, most of our students are challenged by Advanced Placement (AP) work in several disciplines. During their senior year, students produce a substantive thesis on a topic of their choice, working independently with a faculty advisor. This thesis project serves as preparation for college-level research and writing.

Our Junior School and High School directors, department heads and faculty members work with our students to ensure the boys are taking a strong and varied course load, paying careful attention to each student’s total school involvement, athletic and other curricular commitments, and overall combination of classes.

THEOLOGY AT PRIORY THEOLOGY AT PRIORY IS MEANT TO HELP STUDENTS CONSIDER SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT QUESTIONS: WHO IS GOD? HOW HAS HE REVEALED HIMSELF TO HUMANITY? FOR WHAT IS A HUMAN BEING MADE? HOW DO WE TREAT OUR NEIGHBOR? WE OFFER THEOLOGY—WHICH LITERALLY MEANS THE “STUDY OF GOD”—BECAUSE SEEKING UNDERSTANDING REGARDING THESE QUESTIONS IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE. FINE ARTS WE HOPE TO INSTILL IN ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AN APPRECIATION OF THE ARTS THAT CONTINUES INTO ADULTHOOD THROUGH A VARIETY OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS COURSES: STUDIO ART, THEATRE/COMMUNICATION ART, MEDIEVAL ART, AND VOCAL MUSIC. Students present a winter musical and a spring drama or comedy each year in the High School, with female roles played by students from other local schools. The Spring Choral Concert is a favorite of vocal music students in both the Junior School and the High School.

STAINED GLASS AND MEDIEVAL ARTS Priory is the only high school in the country with a Medieval Arts Guild, known officially as “The Guild of Saint Columkille.” All students learn the history and beauty of the Medieval Arts, including the art of calligraphy— a mainstay at Priory since the school’s founding. Interested students may progress through the Guild system, learning the ancient art forms of stained glass, mosaics, banners and illuminated manuscripts from upperclassmen, until they achieve the status of Master in the Guild. Each Master has earned the right to have his personal coat of arms permanently sealed on the Craftsman Table.

The Junior School Athletic Program (7th and 8th grade) The Junior School program is organized into three seasons, with different sports offered each season. At the beginning of each season the students are given the opportunity to choose a sport.

BENEDICTINE TRADITION PRIORY’S BENEDICTINE TRADITION MAKES COMMUNITY LIFE CENTRAL TO A STUDENT’S EXPERIENCE ON CAMPUS. THE ENTIRE PRIORY COMMUNITY GATHERS THREE TIMES EACH WEEK FOR STUDENT COUNCIL ASSEMBLY, PRAYER ASSEMBLY, AND MASS. These gatherings ensure that the entire campus feels a larger sense of community, and Priory’s structure also allows every student to be a part of several smaller communities. It is in these smaller groups that friendships form and connections to the school are strengthened. While the academic classrooms and athletic fields are places where these communities naturally take shape, Priory also makes time for students to participate in clubs, organizations and service opportunities. These extracurricular activities allow students
to work with their peers as they pursue interests that extend beyond the classroom. Our students also develop relationships across grade levels through our Advisory system and weekly Tutoria program, which brings High School students into the Junior School to pray and spend time with the younger boys. Our goal is for new students to connect with upperclassmen as mentors and feel welcomed into the life of the Priory community.
CHAPLAINCY UNDERTAKES THE SPIRITUAL, MORAL AND SACRAMENTAL FORMATION OF THE STUDENTS, WHICH INCLUDES ORGANIZING SCHOOL MASSES, PRAYER ASSEMBLIES, RECONCILIATION, COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS AND ANNUAL RETREATS. Students have many opportunities to be involved in Chaplaincy—in our liturgies as readers, servers, or musicians; as speakers in our prayer assemblies; as leaders of the Spiritual Student Council; or being involved in one of the many religious and service clubs.

COLLEGE COUNSELING OUR COLLEGE COUNSELORS HAVE MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ON THE COLLEGE APPLICATION AND DECISION-MAKING PROCESS.
In 9th grade, Priory’s college counselors offer group presentations to students and parents, and in 10th grade they begin working with students in a small classroom setting to guide them as they approach the college process. By junior year, our college counselors have met with each student and parent at least once to discuss the student’s college plans.

THE ADVISORY SYSTEM EACH STUDENT JOINS AN ADVISORY GROUP, LED BY A FACULTY MEMBER, ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. In the Junior School, Advisors remain with the same students for 7th and 8th grade. Advisory groups meet in the mornings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and eat lunch together on Thursdays.
In the High School, Advisory groups consist of 10-12 students from different grade levels. Boys remain with their Advisory group until graduation, and the Advisor is the primary guide and mentor for the student.

MOCK TRIAL In 2018, for the third year in a row, Priory’s Mock Trial team placed 1st in the St. Louis region, winning all six possible ballots. The team advanced to State, placing 3rd for the third time in three years.

APPLYING TO PRIORY THE BEST PLACE TO START IS BY SETTING UP A CAMPUS TOUR AND VISIT! WE INVITE YOU TO SCHEDULE YOUR VISIT TO PRIORY BY CONTACTING OUR ADMISSIONS OFFICE. WE HAVE OUTLINED THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS AND TIMELINE BELOW. Priory offers a six-year program beginning in 7th grade, and we encourage families considering Priory to apply during their son’s 5th or 6th grade year. We do welcome applicants at all grade levels, including 9th grade, when we have space in a given class. The application process for all grades begins in the fall. Priory offers two types of admission to 7th grade: Early Decision and Regular Decision.
EARLY DECISION PROGRAM FOR 5TH GRADE BOYS Priory offers the Early Decision program for families who have investigated options early and decided that Priory is the best fit for their son. Early Decision applicants go through the admissions process and, if admitted, receive offers of enrollment during 5th grade for 7th grade entry. The requirements and the timeline are the same as for our Regular Decision applicants. We typically fill half of our class through our Early Decision program. The advantage of Early Decision is that your son knows he has a spot at Priory. He will begin to feel a part of the Priory 34 PRIORY | www.priory.org
community early, and he will have the benefits of spending time on campus, building camaraderie with future classmates, and feeling confident that he is prepared when when his 7th grade year begins.
REGULAR DECISION PROGRAM FOR 6TH GRADE BOYS Our Regular Decision applicants typically visit Priory for a day and begin the application process in the fall of 6th grade. We work closely with families throughout the application process and want prospective students to have an early opportunity to get to know our school.

SCHEDULE A VISIT AND ADMISSIONS INTERVIEW Contact the Priory Admissions Office to schedule an interview and a half-day visit for your son so he can experience what it would feel like to be a student at Priory!

REGISTER WITH SSAT Register with SSAT to take the Secondary School Admission Test. Most students take this test in the fall or winter during their application year. Students should take the test no later than January 5, 2019, in order to be considered in our first round of decisions. Priory is hosting an SSAT administration on January 5, 2019. You can find other test dates and locations at SSAT.org.

COMPLETE THE STANDARD APPLICATION Priory uses the Standard Application Online (SAO) through SSAT.org. As you are completing the SAO, you will be able to electronically request a copy of your son’s academic transcript from his school/s and a letter of recommendation from one of his teachers. If your son’s school does not accept requests for transcripts or letters of recommendation electronically, please let us know and we will work with you to find a solution
