On behalf of Surf Life Saving NSW, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to the 2023 Oakberry Acai NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships.

We are so pleased to have the event return to the beautiful Lower North Coast after a hugely successful Championships In 2022.

Cape Hawke will open its doors again to host the 51st Country Championships, one of the major events on the NSW surf sports calendar, attracting around 1,500 athletes from regional NSW.

We thank Cape Hawke SLSC Club President, Gary Curtis for his support of the event, and we are grateful to him and the organising committee for hosting us over the two years, and for all their efforts during the lead up to the event.

I would like to thank the hard-working team at MidCoast Council for their enthusiastic support, assisting in no small part to bring the event to the region.

I would like to acknowledge the important partnership we have with Oakberry Acai, a major player in the ever-growing health food space. This is the second year they have supported as naming rights sponsors and we are looking forward to watching our burgeoning partnership grow.

Surf Life Saving NSW wishes to recognise the traditional owners and custodians of the land in the Foster region, the Worimi people, where the Country Championships are held, and pay our respects to elders past and present.

This is the second year the Country Championships have been hosted by our region, thanks to the dedication and hard work of Cape Hawke SLSC.

As the Naming Rights Sponsor of this prestigious event, Oakberry Acai is proud to express its love of the oceans and the beaches and its commitment to the importance of surf life saving.

Surf life saving not only makes our beaches safe and enjoyable, but it also plays a vital role in educating the wider community about beaches and swimming in the sea. At the core of this is the dedication of the good people, of all ages, who join the surf clubs and volunteer their time each week in order to help this incredibly important movement. Without these tireless volunteers, the surf life saving movement would be impossible and it is something that deserves as much support as possible.

Since opening our first shop in Bondi Beach just over four years ago, Oakberry has now expanded to many other beautiful beach locations around Australia. With 28 açai shops now in operation and another 10 in development, Oakberry is the leading brand of authentic Brazilian acai in the country. Over the three days of competition at Cape Hawke SLSC, clubs and competitors from regional NSW will challenge each other in an amazing range of events, testing the skills and the strength that they have trained for over many months. It is a great credit to all these competitors and to the surf clubs who support them, that they have come together in a celebration of their sport; and it’s a great credit to Surf Life Saving NSW for putting it together so successfully.

I extend a warm welcome from the members of Cape Hawke SLSC to all competitors, officials and supporters for the 2023 Oakberry Acai NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships at One Mile Beach in Forster Tuncurry.

I take this opportunity also to pay our respects and acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land we will be fortunate enough to be enjoying, the Worimi people, and also pay respect to Elders both past and present.

It was pleasing that after some disrupted years NSW country clubs were able to compete fully in their own unique carnival last year and our club is looking forward again to hosting another successful event on our beautiful One Mile Beach. Conditions since the New Year have been ideal and hopefully remain that way through this year’s competition.

Our team of volunteers have been thorough in their preparation and I thank them for their enthusiasm and dedication to our club and the broader lifesaving movement. We have a long history of hosting major carnivals and we are excited to be staging our fifth NSW Country Championships.

We thank again Midcoast Council for supporting the event, Deb Knowles and staff for their valuable assistance, and Jim Pinnington and the SLSNSW Surf Sports team for their skilful and thoughtful planning.

The tragic incidences of drowning in this recent holiday period at unpatrolled beaches highlight the invaluable role the surf life saving movement plays in providing safe places for the public to enjoy an iconic Australian pastime. The individual skills and teamwork required to protect the swimming public between the red and yellow flags will be on show and challenged over the course of these championships. I wish all competitors, officials, families and supporters a successful, safe and enjoyable experience.

Iron Series Legend Throws Support Behind Club of Origin

As Warilla-Barrack Point SLSC looks to take the final step in over-throwing Cudgen Headland SLSC as Oakberry Acai NSW Country Championships winners, Nutri-Grain Iron series legend, Ali Day will be passionately cheering them past the post.

One of the club’s most successful former competitors, and certainly one of its most decorated, Day has forged a remarkable and esteemed surf sports career from humble beginnings on the state’s South Coast, laying the foundation for his success in Windang Bay on his way to conquering the elite circuit.

While the memories of seven Coolangatta Gold and four Ironman titles – and counting – are fresh in the memory, it’s those he forged as a young boy in Warilla that are the fondest.

“It was the best, it was literally some of the best times in my life,” he said.

“I had Marty Smith as a coach, his son David was an Olympian, and he was like a hero to many of us.

“We came through a time where there were kids above me and kids below me who were quite good competitors. It was

fun and we worked hard, it brings back so many good memories.

“I wish I could go back to those times.”

As his former club prepares for another Oakberry Acai NSW Country Championships, contested for the

second year at Cape Hawke SLSC on the Lower North Coast from 27-29 January, he reflects fondly on the experience as a whole in shaping who he is today.

“There’s no one moment that sticks out, you know, it’s the Board relays and Cameron relays I did with guys who are still my closest mates now, it’s going to different beaches, travelling with your friends, dinners with your team,” he said.

“As I got older it was racing but as a kid it was the biggest thing ever. You just wanted to do so well at it.

“Country Champs is a great platform to set the rest of your year up, it holds a really special place in my heart.”

Having come within five points of ending six years and four titles-worth of Cudgen Headland dominance in 2022, WarillaBarrack Point SLSC comes in to the 2023 Championships hungrier than ever before.

Day says he’ll be keeping up with the event and is confident that a changing of the guard is coming.

“I know they’d love to knock off Cudgen, both have always been strong clubs, particularly with Warilla it has gone in waves, I came through a great era and it’s in another great era now,” he said.

Ollie Feeling Sharpe Ahead of LENNOX COUNTRY CHARGE

Defending Open Iron champion, Ollie Sharpe and his club, Lennox Head-Alstonville SLSC, is preparing to lead the charge for the smaller clubs at the 2023 Oakberry Acai NSW Country Championships at Cape Hawke SLSC next week.

The now 17-year-old experienced a coming-of-age party, of sorts, at last year’s event, stunning spectators by skipping the U17 Iron and moving straight to the Open race. He won the race with great distinction, adding to his U17 Board Race victory earlier in the day. His sister, Niamh also enjoyed success in the U15 Board race and in the surfing, the U15 Board Riding event.

If there’s a target on his back ahead of the 2023 event, you wouldn’t know it. Ollie has taken it smooth and easy heading into the Championships, save for competing earlier in January at the Super Surf Teams League and the Trans-Tasman Tri-series – the latter with the successful NSW Country squad.

“I was super stoked with my results last year,” he said.

“I’m very grateful for all the support I received throughout the season and particularly at Country Champs from my club, coaches, teammates and family.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it without that great support.

“I haven’t been training much over the Christmas break, but I am looking forward to Country – it’s one of my favourite carnivals.”

He says there’s few things that can match the vibe around the event – from the people to the competitors to the officials, a Country Championships weekend is unlike any other.

“It’s about the atmosphere for me,” he said.

“Country just creates this great atmosphere – you’ve got U8s to Masters, board riding and the surf boats all racing on the same beach on the same weekend.

“Everyone gets around the races and cheers each other on in true country style and it creates a great environment.”

Last year, Lennox Head-Alstonville fell just short of a miraculous podium finish on the overall point score after some terrific showings, particularly from a strong young core of athletes.

Ollie believes there’s no reason they can’t be there again, building from the same foundations, and he says to keep an eye on the smaller clubs.

“At Lennox we have some amazing junior athletes coming through and some older members with lots of passion for the sport, but I wouldn’t underestimate any of the smaller clubs, especially if the conditions are a bit challenging at Cape Hawke,” he said.

“The goal for the club is to encourage and support as many athletes as possible to get involved in the sport.

“We try to encourage great sportsmanship and build kids’ confidence and ocean skills through participation in carnivals just like this one.”
