If it is known or suspected that the survivors have detection aids such as pyrotechnic flares or other night signalling devices or can display other lights, night searches should always be conducted. Night searches, visual and electronic are particularly effective at sea, over sparsely populated areas, flat terrain and deserts. Night aural and visual search should be considered. Modern electronic detection methods may be effective in locating targets. The capability of these devices should be discussed with the operators of the equipment.
