CALL TO WORSHIP**

“I’ve Got a Feelin…”

(Inspired by Psalm 46:1-11)

Leader: Welcome pilgrims on t he way to the cross

People: We are learning to follow Jesus.

Leader: For those who feel Christ near,

People: May we not turn away from the discomfort of the journey ahead.

Leader: For those who feel as far from Christ as the desert is from the ocean,

People: May we find Christ in the wilderness with us.

Leader: For all of us who stumble and fall in our silence, indifference, and lack of generosity,

People: May we reach for the hand of Christ, who raises us up to continue on the journey.

Leader: Pilgrims on the way, come let us worship God!

People: We come to worship God as we learn to live inside out! Amen.

ALL: Amen!

CONGREGATIONAL SINGING**

“Lift Every Voice and Sing”

Verse 1

Lift ev’ry voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, High as the list’ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun, Of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

Verse 2

Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chast’ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our people sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered; We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last, Where the bright gleam of our bright star is cast.

Verse 3

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.

THE WORD FOR TODAY

First

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

MINISTRY THROUGH TITHES AND OFFERINGS, AND THE SACRIFICIAL OFFERING FOR THE

LENTEN SEASON

Generous God: As we remember Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, we acknowledge the temptation that pursues so many of us to measure our worth, our power and our security by what we have. As we offer these gifts to you this morning, we pray that you might deliver us from the temptation of building our lives around what belongs to us. Continually lead us to the conviction, that what matters is that we belong to you. We pray in the name of our Savior and Redeemer. Amen. (Matthew 4:1-11)

The story of the Black church in America is one of faith and heroism. Added to the challenges that normally confront heralds of the gospel, African American Christians faced special problems because of their race - problems such as slavery and discrimination. Yet out of a deep love for Christ and a heavy burden not only for their own people but also for all who were without Christ, these believers steadfastly proclaimed the gospel of salvation through Christ and the equality of all men and women in the sight of God. The men described are Richard Allen, Lemuel Haynes, John Jasper, Matthew Anderson, John Marrant, George Liele, John Chavis, John Stewart, Lott Carey, Daniel Payne, Charles Tindley, and Charles Price Jones.
