CONGREGATIONAL SINGING

~ ~ ~ OPENING SELECTION “Can’t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus” By: James Cleveland

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 4 Response: There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole. Leader: People:

Answer me when I call, O God of my right! You have given me room when I was in distress. Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.

Leader: People:

How long, O people, shall my honor suffer shame? How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?

Leader:

But know that the Lord has set apart the righteous as God’s own; the Lord hears when I call.

People:

Response: There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole. Leader: People:

Be angry, but do not sin; commune with your own hearts in your beds, and be silent.

Leader: People:

Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.

Leader: People:

There are many who say, “O that we might see some good! Lift up the light of your countenance upon us, O Lord!”

Leader:

You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.

People:

Response: There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole.

PRAYER

“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” By: Joseph M. Scriven/Charles C. Converse Verse 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Verse 2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. Verse 3 Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he’ll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.

THE OLD TESTAMENT READINGS

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY THROUGH TITHES AND OFFERINGS By: Rev. Dr. Ken Sloane Director of Stewardship & Generosity, Discipleship Ministries, The United Methodist Church Holy Giver of All Good Blessings: We find ourselves under a debt we can never overcome. Every blessing we have received or hope to receive, comes from your generosity. The gifts we bring to you this morning, pale in comparison to the bottom line of our ledger; yet you manage your kingdom on a different economic model – one where the equity is grace, forgiveness, compassion, mercy, and justice. You encourage us to be shrewd in the world’s money, knowing it is not the currency that matters in the end. And so, we pray in the name of Jesus, whose life and death paid our debt. Amen. (Luke 16:1-13)
