AFFIRMATION OF FAITH**

(Apostles’ Creed)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

CALL TO WORSHIP**

“Like a Shoot Out of a Stump”

Leader: Cut off from home and heritage, cut down to build somebody else’s prosperity, Lord we come.

Response: Cut off from songs, traditions and culture, that kept us together for so long, Lord we come.

Leader: Cut off by a world that expects more misery and more money, Lord we come.

Response: Cut off by systems that delight in evil and ignore righteousness, Lord we come.

Leader: But because we serve God, who judges people like us with righteousness, God will send a righteous judge, like a shoot out of a stump.

Response: Because God is with us, the wolf will dwell with the lamb, like a shoot out of a stump.

Leader: Let your spirit of wisdom and understanding rise up in us, like a shoot out of a stump.

Response: We expect you to help us grow powerful and united, righteous and holy, even in a sinful world, like a root out of a stump.

Amen.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Down at the cross where my Savior died, Down where for cleansing from sin I cried, There to my heart was the blood applied; Singin’, Glory to His name.

Verse 4

Come to this fountain so rich and sweet, Cast thy poor soul at the Savior’s feet; Plunge in today, and be made complete; Singin’, Glory to His name.

Refrain I’m singin’, Glory to His name, Precious name. I’m singin’, Glory to His name, Precious name. There to my heart was the blood applied; Singin’, Glory to His name.

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

MINISTRY THROUGH TITHES AND OFFERINGS

Our God, architect of this world and all others: We know you had a vision for all your creation to dwell together. With the creatures of the air, earth, and sea, you long for us to live in respect and with one another. We give this morning, understanding that we have denied you that desire. We ask you to help us use who we are and what we have, to heal this abused and broken world. In Christ, our Savior. Amen. (Isaiah 11:1 10)

CANDLE LIGHTING LITURGY

Second Sunday of Advent

Reader One: Worship Leader

“They will not hurt or destroy on, all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. On that day, the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious” (Isaiah 11:9 10 NRSV)

Reader Two: Congregation

We are the followers, of that root of Jesse, Isaiah spoke of. We are the ones who are now called to stand as a signal to the world, to all of creation, that peace is the will of the one who created us. Peace is the knowledge of the Lord, that we proclaim from sea to shining sea.

Reader One: Worship Leader

“In those days, John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near”; and “bear fruit worthy of repentance” (Matthew 3:1,2, 8 NRSV)

Reader Two: Congregation

We light these candles, the candle of joyful hope and the candle of proclaimed peace, in part to remind ourselves that we are a people rising toward God’s promise. But we also light them as a sign to the world, an announcement, there are some who hold on to hope and there are some who work the ways of peace. We stand as a sign that Emmanuel is still our fervent prayer.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

And so, with our people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

All honor and glory is yours, almighty Father (God), now and forever. Amen.
