Welcome

The issues of Race, or Power are not new. These issues are especially not new to the church. What is new is the ur gency that is being felt in this moment. Some are asking, "will this merely be a moment or will it become the movement that is needed to change the world?" Sever al year s ago I wrote a small devotional for Black Histor y Month with a focus on Afr ican Amer ican families, our histor y and pr ayer s that would help us to remember and celebr ate who we are and who God created us to be. When I agreed, the yes was easy, sitting down daily and wr iting was a different thing altogether. Each day, I sat down at the computer and pr ayed for something to come to mind that would not only make sense, but also be encour aging to the reader. I decided to base each of the days on "Faith." Each day I would star t the day by singing this simple song that I had been singing all of my life, "We've Come This Far By Faith." And ever yday I held on to that faith and was deter mined that I would wr ite something. Well that little book, really a booklet was completed and it went on to make the Washington Post Newspaper 's Best- seller 's list. In March of 2020 when it became apparent that the pandemic was going to change our lives forever, I didn't get the full impact r ight away. I star ted to get it when we continued to get hit with wave after wave- - economic decline, job lost and then r acial unrest due to the senseless death of Geor ge Floyd. While this was not the fir st senseless death, it was the str aw that broke the camel's back and cause peoples to take to the streets in protest. And with this came the need for people to have open, honest conver sations about Race, Power, and the Role of the

Church. No longer can any of us say "I didn't know that 'Race' was still an issue" or "we have talked this to death." It is obvious that we have not talked about it enough. And the church, yes, the United Methodist Church has failed. Within our walls and hear ts, r acism is alive, well and working over time. This subject matter is complex and it will take time and concer ted effor t to ensure that awareness is r aised, peoples infor med and educated, as well as the needle moved toward becoming communities of faith focused on making disciples and loving all our brother s and sister s with the love of Chr ist. No more distr actions or excuses, let's do the heavy lifting and be the church we say we are, bold and cour ageous. Let us be willing to tackle the weighty issues that hold us back- - and r acism is one of them that has held us back and held us down. It's time to r ise and stand tall. This toolbox of resources is par ticular for this ser ies of cr itical conver sations. It is not exhaustive, however it is a good star t. Below is the video statement from the Council of Bishops that ever yone should see and hear. So, I am committed to doing my par t, will you be committed to doing your s? Select a book and lead a small group study and get that robust conver sation star ted that leads to greater awareness and wakes us from our slumber. Gather a diver se group of voices and view one of the video in a FB Watch Par ty and use ZOOM to connect and engage. The bottom line is that there are ways to get the conver sations going.
