The invitations to rejoice in the middle of Lent sing in a different key from the jubilant songs of Chr istmas or Easter. Our fir st reading, which seems to have inspired our Four th Euchar istic Pr ayer, outlines the histor y of the people of God as a saga of infidelity, rejection of prophets, and of losing our way by seeking our own advantage. But we remember this histor y only because God continually refused to let it define our future. The real stor y under neath our fir st reading is that there has been nothing we could do to lose our selves per manently or to spur n God definitively; God responds to ever y rejection with a counteroffer of love. This leads directly to the Gospel which quotes Jesus' conver sation with Nicodemus. Nicodemus had come to Jesus at night ? meaning in secret and in ignor ance. In the cour se of their exchange, Jesus invited Nicodemus to be bor n again, a concept Nicodemus inter preted too liter ally. In what followed, Jesus spoke the fir st passion- resur rection prediction in the Gospel of John; he announced that he would be lifted up and that ever yone who contemplated and believed in him could have eter nal life. Of cour se, Nicodemus did not under stand this any more than the disciples under stood Jesus' more direct teachings about his coming death, as recounted in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Soloist:Mr. Rayfield Graves ~~~~~ THE WORD FOR TODAY Dr. Sher r y L. Daniels ?All- In? ~~~~~ INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY THROUGH TITHES AND OFFERINGS By:Rev. Dr. Ken Sloane Director of Stewardship & Generosity, Discipleship Ministries, The United Methodist Church Great and generous God, our lives are sur rounded by things that steal our lives, inflict and destroy us.The tithes and offer ing we share with you this day are a way of keeping us focused, not on the things that would take life away but will renew our lives: hope, love, compassion, empathy. As the Isr aelites looked to a ser pent on a pole for healing, we look to a Savior on a cross to be brought back to life. In that holy name, Jesus the Messiah, we pr ay. Amen.(Numbers 21:4- 9) BLESSING AND SENDING FORTH Go in peace. ?Can?t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus? By:Andrae Crouch Arr. By:Nolan Williams, Jr.

con't Although the myster y of the cross might have been impossible to comprehend, Jesus' next statement explained the context for under standing him and his mission. He said that God so loved the world that the only Son was sent so that ever yone who believes in him might have eter nal life. That's a one- line summar y of Jesus' mission ? a summar y reiter ated twice in the coming ver ses and an explanation of ever ything else Jesus ever taught and did. Paul refer s to this myster y as God's "kindness to us in Chr ist Jesus," God's offer of "the immeasur able r iches of gr ace" for those who have faith. Paul insists that this br ings a joy that does not or iginate in or depend on us. It is the gift of God

Please remember to be faithful stewards and take care of your tithes and offering to our church. We have several ways in which to do so, but why not try something different at least one time. Since many of us have been away from the church for so long, just drive out to the church and bring your tithes and offering and put it in our secured mailbox. It?s nothing like coming on the church grounds; it gives you a different feeling. Come meditate and say a prayer. Yes, you can do this anywhere, but come to the church, sit in your vehicle, or in our picnic area, or our Place of Healing , but just step foot on the grounds, and pay your church a visit; and see how you feel, you?ll be glad that you did. Please note that we have added fund lines for the "Food Pantry" and "Sacrifical Offering" in Fund 2
