Department of Athletics Mission Statement The mission of the department of athletics is to provide a program of intercollegiate athletics that fosters and supports a positive educational and athletic experience, not only for student-athletes but also for the entire Saint Louis University community. The athletics program is guided by the highest standards and ideals of integrity, sportspersonship, ethical conduct, equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities, academic excellence and athletics achievement. The intercollegiate athletics program strives to develop the whole person (body, mind and spirit) in accord with the Jesuit, Catholic mission of Saint Louis University.

The Anheuser-Busch Center The Anheuser-Busch Center is a facility that combines the elegance and ambiance of the finest European sports clubs with the resources and capabilities to meet the highest standards of the business community for meetings and other activities. In the early 1980s, the St. Louis Youth Soccer Association (SLYSA) approached Anheuser-Busch, Inc., with an idea for an athletic facility that would provide thousands of youth from the St. Louis area with a place to play and learn. In 1982, the Center became a reality. In November 1985, A-B purchased the facility with the intention to improve the park and make it one of the best multi-use centers in the region. During a construction period of more than 30 months, workers improved virtually every aspect of the park and added new features. In recent years, the Anheuser-Busch Center has expanded its meeting facilities and upgraded the playing surfaces. The A-B Center is located in Fenton, Mo., on 32 acres approximately 20 minutes from SLU’s Midtown campus. The facility is quickly accessible from business, transportation and lodging located throughout the greater St. Louis area. Two of the six fields are artificial playing surfaces that feature NexTurf, which is engineered for athletes who seek only the best that technology can provide. The padding has a shock pad with proven and predictable shock absorbency that is critical for long-term player protection. The grass zone consists of tall, silky fibers that are engineered for high-performance playing fields. The root zone is a lower layer that stabilizes special rubber granules, brushed into the base of the fabric, that benefit ball rebound, player comfort and shock properties. The dressing of EPDM rubber granules helps provide excellent return of energy. The Billikens play their matches on Field No. 2, which has a seating capacity of 2,550. SLU has played field hockey at the A-B Center since 1999.

What’s a Billiken? One of the truly unique mascots in college athletics, the Billiken is a symbol of good luck that became a national craze in the early 1900s. In 1908, Florence Pretz, an art teacher and illustrator in Kansas City, Mo., received a patent for her version of an ancient Asian figure – a chubby character with pixie ears, fat cheeks and an ear-to-ear grin. A year later, the Billiken Company of Chicago adopted the likeness, giving it its name. Initially manufactured as a bank and statuette, the Billiken reached its peak of popularity in 1911, when it was widely recognized as a universal symbol of good fortune. How the name became associated with Saint Louis University remains a hotly debated issue. Whatever version you accept, it happened between 1910 and 1911 at the height of Billikenmania. The generally accepted version of the story can be traced back to two St. Louis

sportswriters who felt the SLU football coach, John Bender, bore a striking resemblance to the impish creature. William O’Connor and Charles Z. McNamara noticed the similarity one afternoon at practice as Bender was especially satisfied with his team’s performance. Looking at the coach and his broad grin and squinty eyes, O’Connor exclaimed, “Why Bender’s a regular Billiken!” After practice, McNamara drew a cartoon of Bender as a Billiken, posted it in a local drugstore window and tabbed the football team “Bender’s Billikens.” The sporting public took up the name with such enthusiasm that it soon became the official nickname of all SLU teams. Legend has it that the Billiken has three kinds of luck – good, better and best. To buy a Billiken gives the buyer good luck. To have one given to you is better luck. The best luck comes if the Billiken is stolen.

2010 Outlook Due to a never ending rash of injuries, head coach Lauren Bruce never had a completely healthy complement of players last season. In 2010, the coaching staff bolstered the roster with 11 newcomers to restock the squad and give Bruce flexibility to her lineup choices. “I’m looking forward to a more competitive season,” Bruce said. “We will have a young team with 11 freshmen, but we have talent and intensity to blend in with our returning upperclassmen. “Due to sheer numbers, many of our freshmen will start and see extensive playing time,” Bruce said. “We need and will rely on our upperclassmen to provide leadership.” Seniors Katherine Deem, Natalie Gamez and Kelsey Shultz will lead the way for their young teammates. Junior goalie Alex LaBarge returns after missing nearly the entire year in 2009, and junior AllConference selection Nicole Kent was the team’s leading scorer last season. With four sophomores who saw extensive playing time last season coming back, the Billikens are setting the stage for a competitive year in 2010. FORWARDS Kent topped the team with four goals and two assists for 10 points last season, and will be expected to lead the offensive charge again. Behind her, will be many talented youngsters. Shelby Dittmar was an explosive scorer in high school and will be looked upon to provide a boost to the offensive attack. Megan Rogers was a two-time All-State selection and has the talent to contribute to the squad right away. Jane Tomic will be a physical presence up top. She has the size and strength to battle her way to the goal and score on touches and deflections. Tori Lycett brings a rugged and intense physical approach and makes things happen with her effort. “Nicole was an All-Conference selection and will lead us on offense,” Bruce said. “We are looking for a big year out of her. Hopefully she can team up with some others to generate offense for us.” MIDFIELDERS For the returners, Shultz has been a mainstay in the lineup since her freshman year, and she looks to close her senior season with a flourish. Caitlin Brenner started all 16 games last season and was an effective two-way player. Lexie Lindblad earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors after started 14 contests and scoring two goals, including the game winner against Robert Morris. Laken Gehris brings considerable ball skills to the mix and could see action in the middle. She has great skills, is patient with the ball and will be on the corner units. Chelsea Hower was a standout for the top high school team in Kentucky and will be expected to contribute on the offensive end immediately. She won three straight state championships and could be a contender for conference All-Rookie Team honors. Eunice Yoon played all over the field during her prep days, and her versatility will be an asset as she can play in the middle and on the backline. “With Kelsey, Lexie and Chelsea, we will have a strong midfield,” Bruce said. “Kelsey is In line for the best year of her career. She will be one of our leaders and a big core of our team. Chelsea is composed with the ball and makes intelligent plays. She will see extensive action.” DEFENDERS The return of LaBarge to the cage should have an immediate impact on the defensive end. She was one of the top goalies in the country

as a freshman before having her second campaign cut short after just five games. Deem started 14 games in LaBarge’s absence and made 123 saves. Both should see time on the field in 2010, though. Kat Wollenberg joins the goalie rotation this season. She was an All-State selection and will have an opportunity to learn the college game. “We will have a lot of experience in goal with Alex and Katherine, and Kat Junior forward Nicole Kent was a secondteam All-Conference selection in 2009. has the potential to be a good goalie,” Bruce said. “Katherine stepped into a tough spot last season and earned great experience. She communicates well, is fit and is one of the true team leaders. “Alex had the injury last year, but is excited to get back into the game,” Bruce said. “She helps the defense so much with her ability to make incredible saves. The team feeds off her energy.” In front of the cage, the backline will be protected by Gamez, who has started 34 straight games and has been a steady leader. Fellow senior Kelsey Traynor has played in 33 games in her career but injuries may delay her debut on the field for her senior season. Lauryn Smith and Morgan Threatt appeared in 15 games as freshmen. Both figure into the defensive rotation this year after seeing the field regularly last season. Caiti Brownell follows her sister Cathi as a standout defensive player with the ability to push forward into the offensive attack. Natalie Hood was slowed in the preseason but brings a strong work ethic to the backline. Brooke Weaver was a multi-sport athlete in high school and helped her team win a state title. She will bring the same championship mindset to the team on the defensive front. “Caiti comes in already at a great skill level,” Bruce said. “She plays at a high level, is composed and will be a defensive leader as a freshman. Brooke won a state title in high school and will see playing time, and Natalie figures into the defensive rotation.” If the large freshman class can seamlessly blend in with the full complement of healthy returning players, the Billikens will have a chance to sneak up on opponents in league play. “I am excited to have an experienced assistant like Kate Lipton on the sideline this season,” Bruce said. “She will bring her playing and coaching experience to the team, especially one as young as ours, and can help the players and me. We were not picked for a high finish in the conference, but we might sneak up on some people and earn a spot in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.”

The Coaching Staff

Lauren Bruce Head Coach New Hampshire, 2005 Second Season Lauren Bruce is in her second season as head coach of the Billikens. In her first year, she helped Nicole Kent earn second-team All-Conference honors, and Lexie Lindblad was selected to the league’s All-Rookie team. In addition, six Billikens were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. A product of the University of New Hampshire, Bruce was a fouryear field hockey letterwinner for the Wildcats from 2001-04. During that time, the defensive-minded midfielder scored 10 career points (1G, 8A) and helped the Wildcats to 33 wins. In her final two seasons, she helped UNH register 19 victories. An Academic All-American during the 2004-05 academic year, Bruce received several honors for her academic success. She earned a spot on the America East Conference honor roll each year she was eligible. In addition, Bruce was the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Dean Williamson Award, which is presented to a University of New Hampshire senior who has been outstanding and well-rounded in extracurricular activities, scholarship, athletics and loyalty to the University. Bruce, a native of Amherst, N.Y., has been integrally involved in coaching throughout her career. Beginning with her playing days at UNH, Bruce has served as a coach for the FUTURES program. In addition, she is site director and head coach for the FUTURES program in St. Louis. Bruce serves as a coach for USA Athletes International (USAAI). She is a Level I certified official for USFHA and indoor field hockey. In her first season as a SLU assistant in 2006, Bruce helped the Billikens finish with a 7-9 record, their best winning percentage since 1991. She has coached four All-Conference selections during her stint with the Billikens. Bruce earned a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies at UNH in 2005 and a master’s degree in social work at SLU in 2009.

Kate Lipton Assistant Coach Vermont, 2008 First Season Kate Lipton is in her first season as an assistant coach at SLU. She worked the last two years at Saint Michael’s (Vt.) College as an assistant for field hockey and lacrosse. Lipton has served as a coach for the USA FUTURES program and has worked at field hockey camps at

Vermont and Virginia Commonwealth. She directed the Field House Field Hockey Camp and Clinic and coached at the Christy Morgan Circle Play camp. As a player for the Catamounts, she was a two-year captain and also earned the team’s Most Improved Player award. Lipton was an America East Academic Honor Roll selection all four years and helped Vermont earn the NFHCA National Academic Squad award. In 2006, she was second-team All-Conference and was named to the All-Academic team. Lipton, who majored in elementary education, finished her Vermont playing career with 17 assists, good for fifth on the career chart. She finished 11th in program annals in games played and was part of a team that set the program mark with 12 victories in a season. While at Newton North (Mass.) High School, Lipton was selected the Newton Kiwanis Female Athlete of the Year.

What started as an eight-school, men’s basketballonly affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its studentathletes. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 StudentAthlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14 A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women’s tennis had a league-high six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a league-best 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I studentathletes. Moreover, five A-10 institutions enjoy average graduation rates of 90 percent or higher in league-sponsored sports, led by Dayton’s average graduation rate of 97.38 percent. The Flyers are followed by George Washington (94.10), Xavier (93.23), La Salle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). The A-10 features eight women’s tennis and women’s soccer programs that enjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, while six men’s teams in both golf and tennis have a 100 percent graduation rate. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J. University President

Lawrence Biondi, S.J., has been a professor, a department chairman and a dean. But today he is best known as the visionary president of Saint Louis University and founder of the modern SLU. As president, Biondi is the chief executive officer of the institution and oversees the University’s mission of education in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. He leads a university that enrolls more than 13,000 students on three campuses and boasts institutional assets totaling $1.8 billion. Since his inauguration in 1987, Biondi has led Saint Louis University through a remarkable era of transformation and achievement. Under his guidance, the University has completed a number of significant construction projects including the $81 million on-campus Chaifetz Arena, which opened in 2008. In addition to modernizing the campus and helping revitalize the surrounding Midtown neighborhood, Biondi has committed vast University resources to academics, student scholarships and financial aid, faculty research and state-of-the-art technology. During his tenure, he has focused on recruiting the finest faculty and students, increasing the University’s academic standards and achievements, and developing the University as a major research center. Considered one of the most influential citizens in St. Louis, Biondi has earned numerous accolades and honors throughout his more than two decades as SLU’s president. The St. Louis Business Journal honored Biondi as one of only 10 “legends” – individuals “who have gone beyond being influential to become legends in our region and beyond.” He was named St. Louis’ “Citizen of the Year” for 2005. Leadership Center-St. Louis recognized Biondi with the Mayor John H. Poelker Award, which honors community leaders who are committed to excellence in public affairs and who demonstrate a passion for neighborhood and economic development. In recognition of his outstanding service that has contributed to the development of the city of St. Louis, Biondi earned the prestigious St. Louis Award. The St. Louis Ambassadors also recognized Biondi with the Leon R. Strauss Urban Pioneer Award, which is given to an individual in the St. Louis community who has contributed greatly to the development, restoration or improvement of St. Louis. And in 1999, readers of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch named him one of St. Louis’ “Citizens of the Century.” Biondi is recognized as a key leader in higher education, earning a Chief Executive Leadership Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). A Chicago native, Biondi holds six degrees. His master’s degree in linguistics (1966) and his doctorate in sociolinguistics (1975) were conferred by Georgetown University. He has three degrees from Loyola University Chicago and a licentiate in sacred theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Chicago. Before coming to Saint Louis University, Biondi was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola Chicago.

Director of Athletics Saint Louis University director of athletics Chris May has guided Billiken athletics to consistent growth and a high level of success since taking the helm Jan. 30, 2008. The mission of Saint Louis athletics under May’s leadership is to deliver a program of academic and athletic excellence and engage the University community in sharing in the success of Billiken student-athletes. His vision is to fully integrate SLU athletics into the Saint Louis University community through realization of the department’s primary goals of educating student-athletes, attaining competitive success and building community. “Chris May possesses a passion and commitment to take our athletics program to national prominence,” said University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J. “His strong background in strategic planning and fund raising is essential as we continue to move our program forward.” “I am honored to be the director of athletics at an institution that is making the commitment to athletics that SLU is undertaking,” May said. “Father Biondi is committed to enhancing intercollegiate athletics at SLU. It is a privilege to work with him as we strive to raise the profile of SLU athletics, win championships and continue the tradition of graduating our student-athletes. I am committed to a teamwork approach to the department, to make sure we are seen as a part of the University team and as team players within the St. Louis community.” On the education front, SLU continues to be one of the leading institutions in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Billiken student-athletes posted an aggregate 3.124 grade point average in the 2009-10 academic year, a mark that was bolstered by 53 individuals who achieved a 4.0 GPA. Saint Louis produced eight ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America as well as 16 A-10 Academic All-Conference selections. A total of 103 individuals earned a place on the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (minimum 3.5 semester GPA) in at least one semester, with 57 Billikens appearing on the list both semesters. Saint Louis teams continued to achieve considerable success in the realm of competition in 2009-10. The volleyball team earned an NCAA Tournament berth for a second consecutive season and a third time in four years. The Bills’ docket included a win over 10th-ranked California and a match against top-ranked Penn State, which drew a programrecord 6,106 fans to Chaifetz Arena. The men’s soccer team claimed its first Atlantic 10 Championship title and made a strong run in the program’s fourth straight and 46th overall NCAA Tournament appearance, winning a first-round game against Missouri State before falling in overtime at Tulsa. The men’s basketball team exceeded the expectations of many A-10 observers, finishing fourth after being predicted to place 12th. Saint Louis experienced postseason play for the first time since 2004 and made the most of the opportunity, reaching the finals of the College Basketball Invitational. The Billikens won 23 games, tying for the fourth most victories in program history. In its inaugural season, the popular Billiken Legends program honored several successful SLU teams, reconnecting SLU fans with the glorious history of Billiken basketball.

The baseball team caught fire near the end of the season and captured the program’s second Atlantic 10 Championship crown and NCAA Tournament berth in five years of conference membership. The Billikens collected a school-record 33 wins, including a doubleheader sweep of nationally ranked Kansas. The softball squad also established a school mark by winning 30 games. The men’s cross country team turned in its best-ever A-10 Championship finish, while women’s cross country produced its first A-10 All-Conference performer. Women’s tennis placed three players on the All-Conference list for the first time in program annals. In track and field, SLU qualified both a male and female for NCAA outdoor regional competition for the first time in program history. Equally as impressive as the academic and athletic accomplishments is the department’s strong commitment to community service that coincides with the University’s mission. SLU student-athletes stayed true to the Jesuit tradition in 2009-10, enthusiastically contributing thousands of service hours to numerous organizations and individuals. Under May’s guidance, Saint Louis established an athletics fundraising mark in 2009-10 that included record revenue from the Billiken Golf Classic. Additionally, he helped lead SLU’s successful bid to host a 2012 NCAA men’s basketball regional. The department carried out a successful spectator reseating plan for Chaifetz Arena in 2008-09, a year that also saw May spearhead the negotiation of a three-year agreement with the Bonneville Radio Group to carry Billiken men’s basketball on the 100,000-watt 101.1 WXOS-FM/ ESPN Radio, dramatically increasing the Bills’ broadcast reach in the Greater St. Louis area. May came to Saint Louis following more than 22 years of service at the University of Colorado, where he most recently was associate athletics director for external affairs. He was a leader in the “Your Team” campaign for Colorado athletics, which focused on ticket sales, fund raising and image building, and he played a major role in the $46.4 million expansion of CU’s football stadium, Folsom Field. He also held membership on the Metro Denver Sports Commission. May received a bachelor of business administration degree from Iowa State University, where he was a track and field athlete, in 1985 and an MBA from the University of Colorado in 1988. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of Lucy, Jack and Sophia.

Academic Services Brandon Morris Director of Academic Services

Combining academic achievement with athletic success is the primary focus of the Saint Louis University department of athletics and its coaches. Under the guidance of academic coordinator Brandon Morris, the Billiken athletic academic services program provides SLU student-athletes with a broad range of high-quality services that are second to none in intercollegiate athletics. The mission of Saint Louis athletic academic services is to provide a comprehensive program that challenges, supports and nurtures the academic, personal and professional growth of Billiken studentathletes. Through Project BALANCE – Billiken Athletes Learning and Achieving while Negotiating their commitment to Competition and Education – SLU student-athletes are provided with opportunities and

services that can make their experience at Saint Louis University truly extraordinary. Billiken athletic academic services offers academic, career and lifeskills development counseling, guidance in monitoring the registration and class schedules of student-athletes, supervised and open study tables, access to an Internet-compatible computer lab in Chaifetz Arena and a comprehensive tutorial program. Academic services has a staff of trained tutors – undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students – who post superior academic records. The goal of tutoring is to provide assistance that encourages students to become independent learners. Students requesting a tutor meet first with their team academic counselor to discuss specific needs, expectations and goals. Through the support of its faculty and administration and the dedication of its student-athletes, SLU is routinely among the Atlantic 10 Conference’s top academic institutions. In 2009-10, Saint Louis student-athletes garnered 16 selections to the A-10 Academic All-Conference teams. Sports Medicine The sports medicine team at Saint Louis University is dedicated to four primary elements in managing athletic injuries and illnesses: prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and education. The SLU athletic training staff and the multi-disciplined SLU medical staff strive to reach the highest standards in each of these areas when working with our student-athletes. There are two on-campus athletic training rooms that serve SLU student-athletes. The main sports medicine center is located in Chaifetz Arena, while Robert R. Hermann Stadium is home to a satellite athletic training room. The Chaifetz Arena facility boasts state-of-the-art equipment that is strategically designed to provide the best care and performance, including a SwimEx 700 series rehabilitation pool, a Grimm Scientific CRYOTherm polar-plunge pool and numerous other essential pieces of modality and rehabilitation equipment. Each piece of equipment is designed to give student-athletes the best care and to aid them in returning to competition as quickly and safely as possible. The SLU SportsCare Clinic also serves the student-athletes. It features physician services (including x-ray) as well as physical-therapy services for SLU students and is conveniently located at the Student Health Center in Marchetti Towers. Billiken student-athletes receive physician coverage that is second to none in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Our physicians are tirelessly dedicated to the Billikens, covering athletic events and regularly providing medical care during evenings and weekends. An extensive referral network also is in place. Through the Saint Louis University Medical Center, the Anheuser-Busch Eye Institute and SLUCare, Billiken student-athletes receive medical care from some of the nation’s top specialists. Areas of specialty include asthma/allergy, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, gastroenterology, general surgery, neurology, nutrition, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, physical therapy, psychology and radiology.

Jonathan Burch Director of Sports Medicine Jonathan Burch was named assistant director of athletics / director of sports medicine in July 2007. Burch, a 1992 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, supervises a staff of three full-time certified athletic trainers whose responsibilities include injury prevention, rehabilitation and evaluation of Billiken student-athletes from SLU’s 18 sports programs. In addition to overseeing the daily operation of the sports medicine staff, he serves as head athletic trainer for SLU’s men’s basketball program as well as field hockey, cross country and track and field Burch spent four years as the supervisor of sports medicine for the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. In that capacity, he supervised six full-time certified athletic trainers as well as six part-time physical therapists. While overseeing and directing all aspects of the sports medicine program, he was also responsible for arranging consultations for Ole Miss student-athletes. Prior to his stint at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Burch served as head athletic trainer at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for seven years. While with the Trojans, he was the trainer for the men’s basketball program. He also served as head athletic trainer/outreach coordinator for the Arkansas Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center and was a head athletic trainer for NFL Europe’s London Monarchs in 1996.

Strength and Conditioning The Saint Louis University department of athletics continually seeks to identify and implement the latest and best innovations in strength and conditioning. The philosophy is that all student-athletes can improve their performance potential and decrease the risk of injury by elevating their fitness levels through a comprehensive strength and conditioning program. “The goal of the Saint Louis University strength and conditioning department is to increase the athleticism of each student-athlete while reducing his or her risk of suffering a sport-related injury,” strength and conditioning director Scott Charland said. “With the opening of Chaifetz Arena and our new strength and conditioning center, we are now able to accomplish that goal in one of the best facilities in the country.” The Billiken strength and conditioning program has been greatly enhanced by the addition of a spacious, ultra-modern strength and conditioning center located in the new Chaifetz Arena. The facility measures almost 4,000 square feet and features Power Lift state-of-theart equipment – popular for its unique design and appearance, recruiting appeal and safe, multifunctional training capabilities – along with more than 8,000 pounds of free weights. The setup allows entire teams to train simultaneously as opposed to only individual workouts. Charland and Erick Schork, the men’s and women’s basketball strength and conditioning coach, work intensively with student-athletes in all aspects to maximize athletic development. They coordinate specialized training with the sports medicine staff for student-athletes recovering from injury. The staff is also available to counsel student-athletes in nutritional issues and recovery techniques to maximize performance potential.

Scott Charland Dir. of Strength and Conditioning Scott Charland was named director of strength and conditioning at Saint Louis University in March 2008. He is responsible for managing strength and conditioning programs for all SLU sports programs, excluding men’s and women’s basketball, and oversees dayto-day operation of the new strength and conditioning center at Chaifetz Arena. Charland came to Saint Louis after serving as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Ohio State University since 2005. He designed and implemented strength and conditioning programs for eight of Ohio State’s intercollegiate athletics teams and assisted with all aspects of strength training for 18 additional Buckeye sports. Prior to his stint at Ohio State, Charland served three years as head strength and conditioning coach at Birmingham-Southern College. He was a volunteer strength and conditioning coach for one year at the University of Alabama, preceded by two years as assistant strength and conditioning coach at UAB. Charland is a 1996 graduate of Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in leisure services and studies and recreation administration. He graduated from UAB in 2001 with a master’s degree in exercise physiology. Charland is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association and USA Weightlifting.

NCAA Booster Guidelines Saint Louis University deeply appreciates your financial support and volunteer hours, all of which enhance our athletic program. Your support greatly benefits the men and women student-athletes who participate on the University’s 18 intercollegiate programs. However, your assistance is needed in another area. Saint Louis must carefully control and monitor the involvement of persons inside and outside the University in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes as well as their involvement with current student-athletes. B) A person who assists or has been requested to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes by Saint Louis University’s executive/athletic administration. Once an individual is identified as an “athletics representative,” the person retains that identity indefinitely. DO NOT provide awards or gifts to student-athletes for their athletic performance. All awards must conform to NCAA regulations and must be approved by the institution. CONTACTS WITH HIGH SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT-ATHLETES DO NOT make any contact with a prospect or the prospect’s family on or off campus. If a coach has a prospect at an athletic event, you should not approach the coach until the prospect and his or her family have gone elsewhere. If you are approached by a prospect off-campus regarding the institution’s athletics program, suggest that the prospect contact the institution for information. DO NOT become directly or indirectly involved in making arrangements for a prospect, the prospect’s relatives or friends to receive money or financial aid of any kind. DO NOT transport, pay or arrange for payment of transportation costs for a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or friends to visit campus or elsewhere. The City of St. Louis A History Lesson Founded in 1764 as a French fur-trading outpost by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau, St. Louis was the trade and cultural center for the Louisiana Territory and everything north and west. Thus, St. Louis is known as the “Gateway to the West,” symbolized by the Gateway Arch that anchors the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. The first European settlers migrated from New Orleans, followed by a flood of trappers and explorers, two of the most notable being Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who led the famous expedition toward the Pacific Ocean from 1803 to 1806 at the request of President Thomas Jefferson. In 1904, St. Louis hosted the first Olympiad in the United States and the World’s Fair, which led to the development of Forest Park, one of the largest metropolitan parks in the nation.
