Dear “Race Fans and Grandstanders,”
April 2017
Thank you for coming together for “OAKLAND DOWNS” and joining our 48th Running of Cashbah to support the mission of Jesuit Education at St. Louis University High School. “At the starting gate,” I would like to thank LAURA LALLY and TRACI RAGSDALE who have worked very hard to prepare our “Running of Cashbah” tonight. Their inspiring leadership models to all of us what it means to be “men and women for others” in the tradition of Jesuit education. Their dedication, hard work and commitment have also inspired literally hundreds of volunteers in our extended SLUH community. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our Chairs and to all of our volunteers for making this year’s CASHBAH possible. Thank you all very much! For 199 years, young men in St. Louis have been afforded the opportunity to attend SLUH, develop their mind, hearts and their relationship with God to be used in service to the world. Your support tonight makes all the difference in the lives of today’s young men who continue our proud legacy at SLUH. What a joy to join together this evening to support such a wonderful cause! On behalf of our current students, as well as our alumni and families who are so proud to be part of that tradition, I want to extend my personal thanks for the generosity you provide this evening which directly supports the spirit of this great institution. So, let’s get going “across the board” and “all out” as we spend for our Jr. Bills. Thank you for being part of CASHBAH! God has blessed us with such a tremendous group of people who surround and care for our young men. May God bless you and your loved ones with His infinite goodness! “AND WE’RE OFF!” In Christ,
David Laughlin President

THANK YOU FROM THE CHAIRS As we stepped up to post, we were a little timid on whether we could earn the first jewel of the Triple Crown. After the first turn on the track we knew with the fine group of colts and fillies we were running the race with, we would make it to the winner’s circle. We are head over hooves with gratitude and would like to thank our committees, especially our chairs. Without you Cashbah 2017 would never have made it to the starting gate. It has been a joy to work with each and every one of you and we truly appreciate the trifecta of time, talent and friendship you have shared with us! To the Administration, Faculty and Staff: Thank you for your support and encouragement. You helped us keep pace while we were running a fast track. Patti Webb you are our Secretariat. The success of this evening depends greatly upon our very generous sponsors, donors and patrons. Your willingness to give has been truly extraordinary. Thank you! Thank you! There are a few people who especially helped put us on the leaderboard: Madeleine Neuner, our artwork and ad chair, really brought “Oakland Downs” to life with her incredible talent, patience and sense of calm. Amy Hannah, Kristie Leritz, Patti Mays, & Mimi Twardowski, our “Live” Committee, helped make sure “Oakland Downs” is draped in the garland of Roses! Linda Faddis, our Data Entry chair, whose attention to detail was flawless. Angela L’Hommedieu, our Mailing and PR chair, your creative writing skills kept all of us on our toes as we waited for the next tweet. Lastly, thank you to our families! Because of their support, help and patience we were able to finish the race and helped to make it a run to remember!

Cashbah strives to be as accurate as possible in listing donors and apologizes for any errors. When a donor is listed as “Friend of SLUH,” either the donor prefers anonymity or the gift was purchased with money from either gift gathering parties or cash donations. 6. All goods and services purchased at Cashbah will be used at the sole risk of the purchaser and neither Cashbah nor SLUH will be responsible or liable for any damage or injury occurring to any user of said purchased goods and services. All items are sold “as is,” and neither Cashbah nor SLUH makes any warranty or guarantee as to the merchantability or suitability of any such items. 7. Cashbah is a charity auction for the benefit of SLUH and is a tax-exempt charitable organization as described in Internal Revenue Code Section 501c (3). Direct donations to SLUH qualify as charitable contributions from the donors and are deductible for income tax purposes to the extent allowed by law. Patrons are asked to view the auction’s policies and procedures with this in mind and to join in the charitable spirit of this event. In accordance with IRS regulations, the successful bidder of each item will be given a receipt that states the school’s good faith estimate of the actual value of the item for the bidder’s income tax records.
8. Please be advised that Internal Revenue Service rules require the taxpayer to substantiate charitable donations with a written acknowledgement from the charity. The amount of your purchase at Cashbah that may qualify as a charitable contribution is limited to the excess of the amount of the purchase price over the fair market value of the auction item you purchased. An official receipt for your income tax records will be mailed. It cannot be replaced or reprinted. Please consult your tax advisor as to the deductibility of your donation. If the purchased item consists solely of intangible religious benefit, it is regarded, for tax purposes, to have no fair market value, and will, therefore, be regarded as a charitable contribution. 9. Cashbah 2017 believes that $40 per ticket is a reasonable estimate of the fair market value of the dinner, drinks and services provided during Cashbah 2017. Therefore, For the Ticket Purchase of: The Charitable Contribution is: $175 $135 The charitable contribution represents a donation to SLUH and may be claimed as a charitable contribution within the limits allowed by law. When patrons purchase tickets, a receipt is mailed indicating the portion of the purchase price which qualifies as a charitable contribution. 10. All cash gifts to SLUH (such as those received from gift gathering parties or mailed to SLUH in response to a solicitation) qualify as charitable contributions as long as the donor receives no direct benefit in return. Gifts of tangible items to SLUH for use at Cashbah 2017 may also qualify as charitable contributions, although certain restrictions apply when claiming deductions for non-cash gifts. If the amount of cash donated or the value of a donated auction item is $250 or more, the donor is required to have a written acknowledgement. SLUH will provide such an acknowledgement. The written acknowledgement will contain the amount of cash contributed or the name (but not the fair market value) of the item donated. 11. The Internal Revenue Service does not regard the purchase price of a raffle ticket to constitute a charitable contribution. 12. Cashbah 2017 centerpieces and plants are available for sale. Table centerpieces and plants may be purchased via your BIDPAL device until 10 p.m. Items can be found listed on BIDPAL as “Fixed Price Items”. Choose the centerpiece or plant you would like to purchase and press “Buy Now.” Cashbah or SLUH cannot guarantee the life of the plants. CASHBAH 2017 FUND-A-NEED Thank you for allowing me to attend SLUH. I cannot thank you enough for placing me in a position to succeed in high school, college, and my life. The learning environment at SLUH is unmatched, and as a result, I am proud to call myself a Junior Bill. I am appreciative of your generosity, not only in directly assisting me, but also in the future students I hope to aid when I have completed my studies. ~ Matt '17
Your Fund-A-Need gift is critical to the ongoing success of the St. Louis University High School (SLUH) scholarship program. Every dollar you give tonight helps a young man and his family afford the excellent education provided at SLUH. The school conducts needsblind admission and does not cap financial aid, which means we admit students based on their ability to succeed, regardless of their families’ economic circumstances. We will grant $3.8 million in scholarship aid, part of the more than $6 million in direct and indirect assistance distributed this fiscal year. Over 400 families receive direct aid, with an average grant of $9,100. Your gift to the scholarship program enables the school’s student body to reflect the geographic, socioeconomic and ethnic diversity of the area. Jr. Billikens reside in 90 different zip codes on both sides of the Mississippi River, and SLUH draws from over 180 feeder schools. Tonight we rely on your generosity and willingness to be “men and women for others” to help fund the scholarship program here at SLUH. THANK YOU in advance for raising your paddle and supporting our current and future SLUH students.
