FOUR GENERATIONS TO SLUH

The adage, “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow”, is nowhere more apparent than in the history of St. Louis University High School. In 1818, Bishop DuBourg opened the St. Louis Academy on Second Street as a school for young men. In 1824, the diocesan priest-teachers asked the Jesuits to assume the management and teaching of the school, as it was claiming too much of their pastoral time. The Jesuits accepted and, in 1829, they moved the school into a newly constructed building at Ninth and Lucas streets. The institution was chartered as a university in 1832 and graduated its first Bachelor of Arts in 1834. Soon, the growing city created the need to relocate Saint Louis University to a campus setting. In 1888, classes started on Grand Boulevard. The Academy continued to function as a school of secondary education within the Department of Arts and Sciences of the University, but gradually adjusted to the newly established concept of “high school” in the United States. Beginning with the 1903-04 session, instruction in the Academy was lengthened to a four-year period. In 1924, the Academy and Loyola Hall, an affiliated classical high school, merged and moved into a new facility, the Backer Memorial, on Oakland Avenue just west of Kingshighway Boulevard. The funds to build the new school were donated by Mrs. Anna F. Backer as a memorial to her deceased husband, George H. Backer, an 1869 graduate of Saint Louis University. This new school, now called St. Louis University High School, actualized dreams long hoped for by friends of the Academy.

TRADITION

St. Louis University High School is the second oldest Jesuit high school and part of a Jesuit network consisting of 61 high schools and 28 colleges and universities in the United States. With nearly 200 years of tradition of excellence in academics, activities, and ministry, SLUH has been preparing young men not only for college, but also for full lives as intelligent and compassionate human beings. Jesuit schools are infused with a five-centuryold tradition and philosophy of education established by St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. Jesuit education helps develop each student in an environment that fosters the growth of the whole person. The curriculum is designed to challenge the abilities of students while engaging their interest. The SLUH curriculum aims to instill young men with the knowledge and the spiritual, moral, and aesthetic values that will prepare them for a life of high achievement, community service, and personal fulfillment.

As a college preparatory school, one of SLUH’s primary goals is to develop in each student the academic skills necessary to successfully continue his education after graduation. The four-year curriculum is tailored to achieve this result while simultaneously instilling intellectual curiosity and a worldview in keeping with the Jesuit tradition. SLUH’s curriculum is designed to awaken the students’ imaginations, to lead them to make meaningful distinctions, to encourage them to seek truth and justice, and to give them a solid foundation for lifelong learning. The program of studies at SLUH includes a full and rigorous schedule of courses, both required and elective. With Apple technology throughout the school and SMART boards in nearly every classroom, technology enhances the curriculum. Students can choose from more than 90 elective courses, including courses for college credit through Saint Louis University’s 1818 Advanced College Credit Program. Students may also take Advanced Placement (AP) courses and examinations in order to earn college credit or placement at an advanced level for a college freshman. In fact, some students earn enough credits at SLUH to enter college with sophomore standing. In 2015, 500 students took 981 AP exams. Over the last five years, nearly ninety percent of those exams received a score of 3, 4, or 5, grades that typically qualify students for college credit or advanced placement.

FAITH MINISTRY AND SERVICE

Commitment to total formation is the hallmark of a Catholic, Jesuit education. The finest academic training in the world means little without spiritual depth to use it wisely. For this reason, SLUH endeavors to help its students grow into “men for others”: men who will recognize and respond to Christ’s call to service, to share generously their talents, and to work for a community of faith and justice. St. Ignatius passionately sought to labor with Christ in order to bring about the kingdom of God. SLUH’s focus in all of its endeavors reflects the Jesuit motto A.M.D.G., or “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam”, a Latin term meaning “For the greater glory of God.” Indicative of the level of its spiritual environment, SLUH is a top feeder school for the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis and the Jesuits Central and Southern Province.
