SLUH holds first-ever 70-year Reunion In October of 2009, eight members of the Class of ’39 gathered for the first-ever 70-year class reunion at SLUH. The group had lunch with the SLUH faculty in the Currigan Room. Members of the class have been gathering for a semiannual lunch for many years. In the photo to the right are classmates (L to R) Bob Guignon, Lou Desloge, Bob Auffenberg, Ed Albrecht, Ray Laux, Bill Tierney and Bill McCalpin. Also in attendance was Jim Nouss.
Editor’s Note: Our thanks, as always, to retired SLUH Librarian Ms. Marguerite Shewman for her assistance. Ms. Shewman scans local publications for news about SLUH alumni, and sends those along to us at Class Notes.
To submit an item for a future edition of Class Notes, please send the information by e-mail to alumni@sluh.org

The History of Transportation in St. Louis Frank Nuderscher (1889-1959) This mural-sized painting was commissioned for a bank in St. Louis in 1934. Nuderscher depicts the evolution of transportation in St. Louis, starting with an ox cart and Conestoga wagon in the lower left. Proceeding counter-clockwise, the artist shows progressively more modern methods of transport, including the famous airplanes “Spirit of St. Louis and “Spruce Goose, and finally, in the upper left, a vague, shadowy form that represents future means of transport yet to be discovered.
St. Louis Levy Fred Conway (1900 – 1973) Conway was one of the most prominent St. Louis artists of the mid20th century. He achieved great success during his lifetime, securing record-setting commissions for his murals, including the mural for the lobby of the headquarters of the Brown Shoe Company. He taught at the Washington University School of Art for 46 years, and loved to paint cityscapes of bustling urban scenes, such as the train platforms at Union Station, the intersection of Grand and Olive, and the St. Louis riverfront as depicted here.

Pre-Incan Stirrup Vessel This vessel is from the Mochican culture of the South America, in the region that is now Peru and Bolivia. It features a unique stirrup handle, and a bird-like figure holding a drum. It dates to 300-600 A.D., before the rise of the Inca.
West African Ceremonial Headdress This wicker and wood headpiece is from the Bomana tribe in West Africa (Mali/ Niger). Rising over 3 feet tall, it is beautiful depiction of an antelope. Dating from the late 19th or 20th century, it was used for ceremonial purposes as the planting season began each year.

A View of Gloucester Harbor Kathryn Cherry (1880 – 1931) The most well-known female artist in St. Louis during the early 20th century, Cherry was an impressionist who painted marine scenes and floral designs. The St. Louis Art Museum displays a collection of her works.
Black Glazed Guttos With Image of Alexander the Great This vessel is a “guttos” which is a small pitcher used to fill oil lamps. Its distinctive feature is a wonderfully detailed image of Alexander the Great on the top. It dates from the 3rd or 4th century BC.
Mayan Hacha (ax) This Mayan hacha, or ax, is from the Classic to Late Classic period of Mayan culture in Central America (450 – 900 A.D.). It is made from gray basalt, and is the profile of a warrior with strongly modeled features.

Greek Terra Cotta Kylix (wine cup) This beautifully decorated wine cup is from the Classical period of Greek culture, dating from the 4th century BC. It is from the Greek colonies in what is today southern Italy.
Dinosaur Eggs This clutch of 3 dinosaur eggs is from the Cretaceous Period (144 Million BC to 65 Million BC). They were found in the Henan Province of China. The Hadrosaurids (duckbilled dinosaurs) are the likely source of these eggs, as they were deposited in a raised mud nest.
The Boy Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) This lithograph made and signed by Benton depicts a boy from a rural family leaving home…perhaps off to college. This piece has been loaned to several exhibitions.

Egyptian Ushabti Pictured are a few examples from SLUH’s collection of Ushabti, which is Egyptian for “servant.” When an Egyptian noble person died, it was customary to place in the grave various objects which the person would find useful in the afterlife. Among these objects were small statues representing servants. According to Egyptian belief, when called upon by the gods, these servants would come to life to perform deeds for their master. Ushabti are typically made of “faience” or clay mixed with trace metals. When fired, the metals would melt and give the statues a distinctive color. The blue/green statues below contain copper. The larger Ushabti in the center is carved wood and is atypical of these statues and is quite rare.
Chinese Bowl – “Jun” Ware This bowl was produced in the Henan Province during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). “Jun” ware was generally made from stone ware rather than the more delicate porcelain. Copper was added to the various glazes producing the beautiful swatches of crimson and purple.
Apache Basket Dating from the late 19th century, this finely woven basket was used during ceremonies and banquets to honor special guests. The motif features six horses placed in a geometric design.

Desolate Hills Joe Jones (1909 – 1963) Time magazine, in reviewing a major show of his work in New York, called Joe Jones “one of the angriest proletarian painters of the 1930s. His canvases were packed with demonstrators, motherless waifs and starving victims of capitalist greed.” Later in his career, after the glamour of being a revolutionary wore off, he painted celebrated landscapes that hang in many prominent museums across the country.
Alt Toplitz, Germany Werner Drewes (1899 – 1985) The paintings of Werner Drewes hang in museums and galleries across the country, including four in the National Gallery in Washington. Drewes was born in Germany and studied art at the famous Bauhaus school. In the 1930s, Hitler closed the school and began putting political pressure on modernist and abstract artists. Drewes fled to the United States, where he was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group. He became a Professor of Design at Washington University in St. Louis and produced much of his art during his 20-year tenure.

This Spring SLUH will embark on a nautical adventure. The 41st annual CASHBAH Dinner and Auction, “Welcome Aboard,” will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2010. The Cashbah crew is hard at work planning a wonderful evening and collecting fabulous items for the auction. At the helm are this year’s Cashbah Co-Chairs, Barb Bettonville and Claire Jablonski supported by Alumni Chair Mike Brand ’73 and Parent Chair Bob Schenk ’81. Items that can help our voyage bring the greatest benefit to SLUH include: s 5SE OF A VACATION HOME OR condominium for a week or weekend. Perhaps you own property in a resort location
that you would be willing to donate for the date of your choice or one that is “mutually agreeable”. s 4ICKETS TO SPORTING EVENTS plays or concerts always attract attention. Access to private suites, amenities or one-of-a-kind events brings even higher bids. Out of town activities are big sellers also. s /UR BUYERS LOVE GOLF OUTINGS especially at the areas top private clubs. Would-be sailors can also come on board by making a cash donation, or buying a ticket for the President’s Raffle. Contact the Cashbah Office at 314-531-0330 Extension 158 or 219 for information, or send an e-mail to cashbah@sluh.org.
