THE TOP-RATED HEALTH LAW PROGRAM Established in 1982, the Center for Health Law Studies was one of the first law school programs to focus on the intersection of the health care system and the legal system. Under direction from nationally renowned faculty, the Center has celebrated 30 remarkable years of national and international leadership in health law scholarship and education.

Students who earn a Concentration in Health Law have access to top-tier faculty; leading scholars, practitioners and employers; and one-on-one support and guidance from staff who work together to give our students a competitive edge as they pursue careers in the legal and health care fields.
Dual-Degree Programs In cooperation with the Saint Louis University Center for Outcomes Research, the College for Public Health & Social Justice and the Center for Health Care Ethics, the Center for Health Law Studies offers five health law related dual-degree programs. The dual-degree programs are designed to allow students to obtain two degrees in significantly less time (four to five years depending upon the degree) than if the degrees were obtained separately. Students must complete two semesters at SLU LAW before beginning a dual degree.
Our health law graduates work across the country, where the Center’s reputation is highly regarded. For ten consecutive years, the Center for Health Law Studies has earned the reputation as the nation’s premier health law program. EARN A CONCENTRATION Students pursuing a J.D. may also earn a Concentration in Health Law by completing a required course of study and specified co-curricular activities through the Center for Health Law Studies. MASTER OF LAWS IN HEALTH LAW The Master of Laws (LL.M.) is an advanced degree designed to serve two types of lawyers – those seeking an in-depth introduction to the practice of health law and those who are currently practicing and wish to increase their exposure to new developments in health law. This highly selective program allows each student individual attention and close faculty supervision. Students are encouraged to complete scholarly writing, attend seminars and participate in directed research projects. Requirements for the Health Law LL.M. include: 24 credit hours of law courses Master’s thesis of publishable quality Up to 6 credit hours of directed research Up to 6 credit hours outside the law school

Students in this dual-degree program will earn a J.D. and a Master of Science in Health Outcomes Research and Evaluation Sciences. This program will develop health care lawyers who are able to account for health outcomes data in preparation for litigation, in assessing a client’s compliance with various regulations and in counseling clients related to liability risk management and institutional policy. Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health in Health Management Policy (J.D./M.P.H. Health Management Policy) Juris Doctor/Master of Public Health (J.D./M.P.H.) Dual-degree programs with the College of Public Health & Social Justice allow highly motivated
students the opportunity to combine the field of health law with health administration, health policy or public health. The College of Public Health & Social Justice is home to a top-ranked program in health administration. In Cooperation with the Center for Health Care Ethics Juris Doctor/Doctor of Philosophy in Health Care Ethics (J.D./Ph.D.) The Center for Health Care Ethics offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of bioethics. Faculty members hold terminal degrees in law, medicine, philosophy, psychology, health care ethics, public health and research methodology. Health care ethics has become its own field, but it requires multidisciplinary expertise. While pursuing the J.D., law students also have the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. and gain expertise in the field of bioethics.

I chose to pursue a joint J.D./M.P.H. - Health Policy at SLU LAW because of the Health Law program’s exceptional reputation. The experience has surpassed my expectations as I have benefited from an extensive variety of health law courses, expert faculty and unique extracurricular opportunities. Through their affiliation with the Center for Health Law Studies, SLU LAW students obtain diverse handson experience in the area of health law. SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY JOURNAL OF Health Law & Policy The Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy is published bi-annually by the Center for Health Law Studies and a student editorial board. Law students participate in the Journal as issue, lead and staff editors. One issue each year is devoted to the publication of the proceedings of the Center for Health Law Studies’ annual symposium. The second issue is devoted to coverage of emerging issues within health law and policy. Legal Clinics Third-year students, supervised by practicing attorneys, work in the SLU LAW Legal Clinics. Health law students have the opportunity to advocate for the elderly and disabled in the Elder Law Clinic and represent children with disabilities and their families in the Child Advocacy Clinic. Students may also participate in case development and appellate advocacy concerning substantial legal matters such as state health policy. Externships Externship positions allow students to gain first-hand experience and may lead to full-time employment.
Students are regularly placed in the following organizations within the St. Louis community: Ascension Health BJC Health System Hospital Sisters Health System Logan College of Chiropractic Lutheran Senior Services Mercy Health SSM Health Care Saint Louis University School of Medicine U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, Fraud Division U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs PROFESSIONAL SKILLS COMPETITIONS Each year, the Center sponsors and coaches health law students as they compete in regional and national professional skills competitions. Our students participate in the National Health Law Moot Court Competition, the Transactional Health Law Competition at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and in the University of Maryland’s Health Law Regulatory & Compliance Competition. SLU LAW teams have consistently ranked among the top teams in these competitions, including first place wins for both our Transactional Team and Regulatory Team in 2012.

Health Law SEMESTER IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Complex and fast-paced, the health care industry is highly regulated, with substantial regulation occurring at the federal level. During the Health Law Semester in Washington, D.C., law students clerk in a health-related federal agency for an entire semester. Students gain significant practical experience working with complex health care regulations. Additionally, they begin building a network of contacts within the federal government and in D.C., in particular.
Offered annually during the spring semester, this program is available to students enrolled in the Health Law Concentration program, a health law dual-degree program or the health law LL.M. program. Additionally, each student must have successfully completed Administrative Law, Health Care Law and Professional Responsibility prior to his or her semester in D.C. Agency placements have included:

Students in the program are eligible to earn 12 to 14 credits through a combination of experiential and course work. Students work nearly full time during the spring semester at an assigned externship placement for up to 12 credits. Students 7
ANNUAL HEALTH LAW SYMPOSIUM In the spring of each year, the Center hosts a symposium featuring leading experts and scholars in a relevant field. Proceedings of the symposium are published in the Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy. Symposium topics focus on ground-breaking issues in health law and policy. ACCESS TO RENOWNED SCHOLARS AND PRACTITIONERS Due in large part to the Center’s strong national reputation, students are exposed to some of the best legal minds in the country. Distinguished Speaker Series Throughout each academic year, the Center hosts several leading scholars and practitioners who shape health law and policy. Students have the opportunity to meet with the speakers and discuss timely health law and policy issues during small group sessions. Practitioner-in-Residence Program The Practitioner-in-Residence program allows the Center to host a visiting health law attorney for several weeks each year. The practitioner has the opportunity to reflect on the practice of law and refresh his or her perspective while offering students and faculty insight into the realities of the practice of health law. Health Law Scholars Workshop The Center for Health Law Studies and the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics host the annual Health Law Scholars Workshop each fall at SLU LAW. This collegial forum allows faculty new to health law and bioethics scholarship to present works-inprogress and receive advice from experienced health law and bioethics scholars.
