Play with contrast too, as two different worlds - the primal energy of Earth and the polished world of tech - collide with activewear. Stylesight Forecast > S/S 16 > Active

Urban Workout: Extreme Athleticism in the Cityscape The urban environment is, for obvious reasons, the sports terrain of choice for those who run or cycle everyday, but it’s also increasingly a playing field for more extreme sports. Trail running events are being organized in urban settings, drawing new participants to the typically non-urban sport. In addition to its City Trail Running Series, Salomon has launched a dedicated app with suggested running routes and the usual monitoring and sharing options. The popularity of cross-fitness is in the same vein reviving urban workouts and parkour, thanks in part to workout stations that cities are installing to encourage fitness activities. While the architectural landscape is the theater for acrobatic parkour feats, unconventional locations are being transformed into activity parks, as seen in a former mine in North Wales where the Zip World amusement park has recently installed giant trampolines in spectacular caves. Performance sportswear collections feature constructivist color-blocking (Reebok), optical black and white effects (Nike), and mineral camouflage motifs (adidas Terrex) that match the stark urban-action vibes of sportswear this season. 1. Outerwear Reboot: A Fresh Look at Form Following Function The often-touted maxim that 'form follows function' is being taken to new heights thanks to textile innovation, the need to reduce waste and a new vision of made-to-purpose design. Japanese brand Descente is renowned for its pared-back approach to its high-end outerwear jackets cut using a single piece of fabric. The North Face has introduced the second iteration of its novel FuseForm™concept in the Originator jacket, which is cut using a single piece of fabric made with a hybrid weave construction: one portion is in conventional nylon, the other reinforced with CORDURA® and placed on the upper body. The resulting jacket has fewer seams requiring less taping and reduces sources of friction and wear. Cuben, a high tenacity fabric used for sails and backpacks, said to be an ultra-light version of Kevlar, is now appearing in outerwear. At Peak Performance, the near-transparent Dyneema®-reinforced fabric is sandwiched between two layers of polyester film and weighs only 49 g/m2. The adidas Terrex jacket also features the laminated fabric, in a slightly heavier weight (66 g/m2). Meanwhile, the simple and architectural styles of traditional workwear clothing has inspired British designer Faye Toogood. She has reworked, rubberized and seamsealed oil rigger, mechanic and milkmen garments to create a sculptural series of designs. 1. Porsche Design Sport by adidas 2. Descente 3. Hydration Awareness: The New It Data Hydration is an important part of sports performance, but until now it has yet to emerge in the many metrics that are now part of an athlete's daily training regimen. Innovative technologies are stepping in to provide the necessary data and help athletes better understand their needs. Vessyl is one of the new items to come out of the high-profile design agency fuseproject, headed up by Yves Behar. The smart container monitors liquid intake throughout the day, displays relevant data on the mug itself and sends the information to a smartphone to keep a tab on caffeine or water consumption. Gatorade’s new smart container was developed so that coaches can follow the hydration needs of their athletes in real time; the concept also includes customized pods to add to the beverage of each player. Tech start-up MC10, the inventor of smart sensor-equipped patches, is gearing up to launch a hydration patch that syncs with a smartphone. As knowledge and awareness spreads regarding hydration needs, we can expect new devices, and maybe even new textiles to capture the data. Its future can be linked to the smart water trend, a market that continues to grow (up 4% in total dollars year-todate July 2014 in the US according to point of sale data compiled by SportScanInfo). After coconut water, maple water is the new it drink, promoting its own set of natural minerals, vitamins, electrolytes and prebiotics the body needs to stay fit. 1. maple. 2.
