SAINT MICHAEL
and All Angels Episcopal Church
The Twenty-Fifth Sunday After Pentecost November 10, 2024
11 AM TRADITIONAL Saint Michael Chapel
WELCOME
FROM THE RECTOR
The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.
In addition to worship, I hope you will join us for an education class at 10 a.m. Our classes have been very well-attended, and there’s space for you! Take a look at the schedule at the back of this bulletin for descriptions and locations. Tonight, we will celebrate Veteran’s Day with our annual service for the city at 5:30 p.m. Join me in thanking the brave men and women who have served our country. In addition, this year will we will recognize those Saint Michael members who have served and are serving in the military in our Veteran’s Day worship service bulletin. Praying for those who have the courage to serve is always a privilege.
As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Hymn S 202
A contemporary of Felix Mendelssohn, Theodor Elze (1830–1895) attended the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied piano, violin, and composition. He wrote symphonies, string quartets, violin sonatas, and vocal instrumental works.
O God, whose blessed Son was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant us, we beseech thee, that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that, when he shall appear again with power and great glory, we may be made like unto him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where with thee,
Chanted by
O Father, and thee, O Holy Ghost, he liveth and reigneth ever, one God, world without end. Amen.
The First Lesson (seated) 1 Kings 17:8-16
The word of the LORD came to Elijah, saying, “Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” But she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth.” She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah.
Lector The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
The Psalm (seated) Psalm 146
Hallelujah! Praise the LORD, O my soul! *
I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, * for there is no help in them. When they breathe their last, they return to earth, *
and in that day their thoughts perish.
Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! * whose hope is in the LORD their God; Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever; Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger.
The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind; * the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; The LORD loves the righteous; the LORD cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked.
The LORD shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!
The Second Lesson (seated) Hebrews 9:24-28
Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all) Hymn 656, v. 1
“Blest are the pure in heart” Franconia
The Gospel (standing) Mark 12:38-44
Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.
As Jesus taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ.
The Sermon (seated) The Right Rev. Dr. George R. Sumner
The Nicene Creed (standing)
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Apart from being one of the most acclaimed composers of his generation, Felix Mendelssohn forever changed Western classical music by initiating a renewed interest in the music of J.S. Bach. Mendelssohn set several German Lutheran chorales as choral pieces, including today’s anthem in 1831. A single verse of the chorale is set first with one voice, then two, then four. Mendelssohn’s mastery of multi-voiced writing is on display as much as his ability to write beautiful, stirring phrases with the simplest of melodies and harmonies.

“Holy, holy, holy”
Please kneel as you are able.
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
L ikewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;
By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

I Would See Jesus Leonard P. Breedlove
I would see Jesus when the flow’rs of joy adorn my way. When sunshine and when hope surrounds my path from day to day. When friends I cherish most are near, and hearts encircle mine, Then, Father, would I turn from all to lean alone on thine.
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water, thirsty one, stoop down and drink and live!” I came to Jesus and I drank of that life-giving stream, My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in Him. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light. Look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright!” I looked to Jesus and I found in Him my star, my sun; And in that light of life I’ll walk till trav’ling days are done.
- L.P. Breedlove, Horatio Bonner
The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)
Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
“I Would See Jesus” was originally published in The Sacred Harp, a book of over 250 songs compiled by B.F. White and E.J. King in 1844. This book became the songbook for singing schools and named a new singing tradition, Sacred Harp Singing. L.P. Breedlove served on the committee for the Southern Musical Convention’s revision of The Sacred Harp in 1849–1850. The version of “I Would See Jesus” that the choir is singing today was arranged by Martha Shaffer in her collection “Five Hymns from The Sacred Harp.”
Purcell Mansfield (1889-1968) was an accomplished organist and pianist by an early age, and had a long and distinguished career as an organist, composer, and conductor. Tutored entirely by his father he wrote his first composition at the age of eleven, and in 1904, at only fourteen, he was admitted as a music student at the University of Durham, England. The music is dedicated to Wilfred Emery, Master of Music, Glasgow Cathedral.
