SAINT MICHAEL

and All Angels Episcopal Church

The Third Sunday After Pentecost June 9, 2024

11 AM CONTEMPORARY CHURCH

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Summer at Saint Michael is full of worship, fellowship, and service, and I encourage you to see how you can plug in. Pub Theology continues each Monday night in June at 7 p.m., and next week kicks off our Vacation Bible School. In addition, please help us “fill the summer pantry” at North Dallas Shared Ministries (NDSM). We partner with NDSM throughout the year to help meet varied needs of our neighbors, and summer is a great time to support them with bags of shelf-stable groceries.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

The Lesson (seated) Genesis 3:8-15

They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was

naked; and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.” The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”

The Gospel (standing) Mark 3:20-35

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The crowd came together again, so that Jesus and his disciples could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.” And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.” And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first t ying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” And he replied, “ Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon (seated)

The Nicene Creed (standing, said by all)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

8

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the foregiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People: Form III (standing)

Celebrant Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Lector Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; People That we all may be one.

People That our works may find favor in your sight.

Lector Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

People That they may be delivered from their distress.

Lector Give to the departed eternal rest;

People Let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lector We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy.

People May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Lector Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

Celebrant O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Confession of Sin and Absolution (kneeling)

Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

10

The Peace (standing)

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People And also with you.

Announcements (please be seated)

The Birthday Blessing (those with birthdays in June please stand)

All Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Holy Communion

Offertory Song: “I Shall Not Be Moved” (sung by the Contemporary band)

When by grief all my joy is stolen and the sureness of my footsteps fail

Then I lift my weary eyes to heaven to find my help within the gale

When I fly aimless like the raven

Never finding solace from my toil

Let me be like the white-winged dove

Returning home on solid soil

And when the darkness is all around me when the storms come I will trust in You

Rock of Ages, be my anchor For I shall not be moved

When I don’t feel your loving arms around me when my faith is shaken to the core

Then you speak with a voice so tender Child, come home, I’m waiting at the shore

And when the darkness is all around me when the storms come I will trust in You

Rock of Ages, be my anchor

For I shall not be moved

My faith will hold; you’re my loving Father

I shall not be moved

Just like the tree planted by the water

I shall not be moved

And when the darkness is all around me when the storms come I will trust in You

Rock of Ages, be my anchor

For I shall not be moved

Celebrant L ift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

Sanctus (Micah Blalock)

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Please remain standing as you are able.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

13
Ho ly, ho ly, ho ly Lord, God of pow er and might, - - -5 Heav en and earth are full of your glo ry. Ho san na in the high est. -9 Bless ed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Ho san na in the high est. -
Music and arrangement by Micah Blalock (c) 2005 Micah Blalock Music

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unit y of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All are invited to come forward to the two standing stations for Communion at the direction of the ushers. Gluten free wafers are available upon request. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself.
