SAINT MICHAEL
and All Angels Episcopal Church
The Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King November 24, 2024
11 AM TRADITIONAL Saint Michael Chapel
WELCOME
FROM THE RECTOR
The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.
As we shift into the holiday season, I invite you and your family to consider how you will be generous through your service through Saint Michael. There are always many ways to serve, so I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities! Two projects happening right now include I Believe in Angels (IBIA) and collecting canned food to stock the pantry at North Dallas Shared Ministries (NDSM). You can learn more from the Sunday News pamphlet available near the doors of the church. I also encourage you to invest in your discipleship growth and in our shared ministry by committing to an annual stewardship gift this year. Please see the blue box at the bottom of this page and make your gift today. What we do makes a true impact, and we need you!
As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

In 1926-1927, Louis Vierne wrote four sets of organ suites titled Pièces de Fantaisie Pour Grand Orgue en 4 Suites. Unlike baroquestyle suites, each set consists of six character pieces. “Cathédrales” contrasts the extreme dynamic ranges of the organ, effectively portraying both the cavernous nature of gothic transepts and high vaulted ceilings, and the more intimate, mysterious nooks and crannies of seldom visited side chapels.
The First Lesson (seated)
Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. … As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed.
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
The Psalm (seated) Psalm 93
The LORD is King; he has put on splendid apparel; * the LORD has put on his apparel and girded himself with strength. He has made the whole world so sure * that it cannot be moved;
Ever since the world began, your throne has been established; * you are from everlasting. The waters have lifted up, O LORD, the waters have lifted up their voice; * the waters have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the sound of many waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea, * mightier is the LORD who dwells on high.
Your testimonies are very sure, * and holiness adorns your house, O LORD, for ever and for evermore.
The Second Lesson (seated)
Revelation 1:4b-8
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.
Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

“Born thy people to deliver” Stuttgart
The Gospel (standing)
Hymn 66, v. 3
John 18:33-37
Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ.
The Sermon (seated) The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
The Nicene Creed (standing)
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

T. Frederick Candlyn was born in Davenham, Cheshire, England, in 1892, and died in Point Lookout, N.Y., in 1964. In 1942, Candlyn set the text of “Christ whose glory fills the skies” to music. Charles Wesley had originally written the poem in 1740. Wesley was educated at Oxford where, in 1727, he formed the “Oxford Methodist” group among his fellow students. His elder brother, John Wesley, joined in 1729, and together they established what is now the United Methodist Church.
All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.
The Holy Communion
Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)
Christ whose glory fills the skies T. Frederick Candlyn Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true and only Light, Sun of righteousness, arise! Triumph o’er the shade of night: Day-spring from on high, be near; Day-star, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn,
Unaccompanied by thee; Joyless is the day’s return, Till thy mercy’s beams I see; Till they inward light impart, Glad my eyes and warm my heart.
Visit then this soul of mine!
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief!
Fill me, Radiancy Divine; Scatter all my unbelief; More and more thyself display, Shining to the perfect day!
- Charles Wesley

Hymn S 114
Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use.
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
L ikewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;
By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Even with darkness sealing us in, we breathe Your name, And through all the days that follow so fast, we trust in You.

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)
Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the
Stephen Paulus was a prolific American composer of classical music. He wrote over 600 works for chorus, opera, orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo voice, concert band, piano, and organ. “Pilgrim’s Hymn” was originally composed as the final chorus of the opera The Three Hermits, which premiered at The House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. After the premier of the opera, Kathy Romey, conductor of the Minnesota Chorale and Head of Choral Activities at the University of Minnesota, encouraged Paulus to have the final chorus published as its own separate work. It has now become Paulus’ most popular and widely performed works, and was even performed at the funerals for Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. This moving anthem is a reminder that God hears our prayers, even before we voice them.
blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Allegro con brio from Sonata No. 4, Op. 65 Felix Mendelssohn
Felix Mendelssohn’s organ sonatas represent a significant re-birth for the organ in both continental Europe and England. Mendelssohn was a child prodigy and one of the great virtuosos of his day. He made his name on the continent as a pianist and conductor and in England as an organist, and frequently drew packed houses to his concerts on tour. When he published his sonatas simultaneously with four publishing houses in England, Germany, Italy, and France, these works instantly joined the standard canon of organ repertoire.
The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979.
The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.
