The Collect of the Day (standing) Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson Jonah 3:1-5, 10 (seated) The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to

3

Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. … When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he

would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Lector People

The Psalm 62:6-8, 10-14 (seated, chanted by the choir)

Steve Burk

For God alone my soul in silence waits; * truly, my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, * my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken. In God is my safety and my honor; * God is my strong rock and my refuge. Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath, * even those of low estate cannot be trusted. On the scales they are lighter than a breath, * all of them together. Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; * though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it. God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, * that power belongs to God. Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, * for you repay everyone according to his deeds. The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 (seated) I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. Lector People

The Gospel Mark 1:14-20 (standing) Gospeler People

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. Gospeler People

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Holy Communion This anthem, rich with biblical imagery illuminated by Parry’s expressive music, calls us to lay aside all distractions and focus only on Christ’s call. The second verse recounts the obedience of Simon Peter and Andrew, who left their fishing to follow Jesus, while the fourth recalls the story of the prophet Elijah, who heard God speak, not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in a still, small voice.

Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Dear Lord and Father of mankind

Hubert Parry

Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways; reclothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. In simple trust like theirs, who heard beside the Syrian sea the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, rise up and follow thee. Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm! - John Greenleaf Whittier Presentation Hymn (standing, sung by all) “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow”

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer II (standing)

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up unto the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People It is meet and right so to do. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and singing, The Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) “Holy, holy, holy, Lord” Healey Willan

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

Hymn S 114

Please kneel as you are able All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

10

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All

11

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (sung by all) “Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia” David Hurd

Hymn S 154

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in

remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) I believe this is Jesus Undine Smith Moore I believe this is Jesus; Come and see, oh, come and see. The Light of God shines in his face, He offers all his pard’ning grace; The peace of God is in his face, my comfort comes with his embrace; Come and see, oh, come and see. Yes, yes, yes Lord! Oh, I believe this is Jesus; Come and see, come and see.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Initially trained as a classical pianist, Undine Smith Moore later turned to composition and became known as the “Dean of Black Women Composers.” She saw “black folk music and Bach as true influences” on her compositions. “I Believe This is Jesus” is one of her arrangements of AfricanAmerican spirituals for choir, her preferred musical medium.

12

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all) Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. The Blessing (kneeling) The Dismissal (standing) Minister People

Hymn 408

Postlude Batalla Del Clarines

José Blasco de Nebra

José de Nebra (1702-1768) was taught by his father, José Antonio Nebra Mezquita, organist and master of choirboys at the Cathedral of Cuenca in Spain from 1711 until 1729. More than 170 vocal and instrumental works by Nebra survive, including approximately thirty keyboard works. Although this music was originally composed to be played by organists, a substantial part was in fact influenced, in compositional terms, by the prevailing performance style of the time that employed clarines the name given to the trumpets played in the upper registers, also known as the clarin register. Early evidence points to their use on solemn occasions thanks to the brilliance of their sound.

Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.
