We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need. In this new year, please take a moment to think of all the ways God has blessed you with gifts and how you can use those gifts through our church community. If you’ve not yet made your financial commitment to our shared work, please do so today so your gift will positively impact our new budget year (see the back of this bulletin for more information). As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

The Word of God Welsh composer William Mathias (1934-92) started playing the piano at the age of three and began composing at the age of five. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Lennox Berkeley, where he was elected a Fellow in 1965. He was professor of music and head of department at the University of Wales, Bangor, from 1970 until 1988. Much of his music was written for the Anglican choral tradition, most famously the anthem “Let the people praise Thee, O God,” written for the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. “Processional” was written in 1964. Mathias uses a characteristic harmonic style of consecutive intervals, as typified by the opening fanfare of fifths on the fiery Swell Trumpet, and the ominous fourths in the middle section.

Almighty and everlasting God, who dost govern all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of thy people, and in our time grant us thy peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson Deuteronomy 18:15-20 (seated) Moses said: The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me
3
from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: “If I hear the voice of the LORD my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die.” Then the LORD replied to me: “They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will
hold accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak—that prophet shall die.” Lector People

The Psalm 111:1-8 (seated, chanted by the choir)
Henry George Ley
Hallelujah! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the deeds of the LORD! * they are studied by all who delight in them. His work is full of majesty and splendor, * and his righteousness endures for ever. He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant. He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations. The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity. The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 (seated) Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him. Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “no idol in the world really exists,” and that “there is no God but one.” Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as in fact there are many gods and many lords—yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
4
“Food will not bring us close to God.” We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall. Lector People

The Gospel Mark 1:21-28 (standing) Gospeler People
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were
5
all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. Gospeler People

All
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

Luca Marenzio was an Italian composer and singer of the late Renaissance. He was one of the most renowned composers of madrigals, writing around 500 throughout his career. Marenzio’s sacred works are less well known than his madrigals, but their characteristics are the same: outstanding verbal imagery and subtle symbolism.

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up unto the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People It is meet and right so to do. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and singing, The Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) “Holy, holy, holy, Lord” Healey Willan
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
Hymn S 114
Please kneel as you are able All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.
10
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All
11
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Teach Me, O Lord Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes, And I shall keep it unto the end. - Psalm 119:33
Thomas Attwood
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
Thomas Attwood was an English composer and organist. Born in London, he became a chorister at the age of nine in the Chapel Royal, where he studied under James Nares and Edmund Ayrton. In 1785, he proceeded to Vienna, where he became a favorite pupil of Mozart. In 1796, he was chosen as the organist of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and made composer of the Chapel Royal. This simple, lyrical anthem takes its text from the 33rd verse of Psalm 119.
12
The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all) Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. The Blessing (kneeling) The Dismissal (standing) Minister People

AMISTAD BOLIVIA YOUTH MISSION TRIP Amistad, Bolivia Youth Houses
Since 1990, Villa Amistad has provided a loving Christian community to children who have been abused, abandoned, or orphaned. Located in the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia, Villa Amistad utilizes a family model for vulnerable Bolivian children so they can grow to independent adulthood. On this mission, we engage in active friendship through shared meals, arts and crafts, outdoor sports and field trips with the children and youth of Amistad. The last few days of the trip will be spent in fellowship with team members while exploring Sao Paulo Brazil. July 29 – August 8, 2024 | Registration open now. The trip, led by the Rev. Robin Hinkle and the Saint Michael Youth Minister, Sam Moore, takes place from July 29 – August 8, 2024, at Villa Amistad in Bolivia. For more information, contact The Rev. Robin Hinkle at rhinkle@saintmichael.org.
